The fundamental idea behind the parks is native. It is, in brief, that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us. The parks stand as the outward symbol of the great human principle.

HISTORY OF GALION, OH From the Galion History Center
Like many other towns in Ohio, Galion started as a small pioneer settlement in Wyandot Indian territory. The Leveredge family was the first family to settle in what is now Galion. They were also joined by the Hosfords, Ruhl, and Riblet families, among others, in being the first to settle the area. The settlement started with just some log cabins, a stagecoach, and a tavern. Soon the settlement expanded to include a blacksmith shop, a tannery, a livery, and general stores. The name Galion was chosen in 1826 and the town was officially platted in 1831. Not only did the railroad bring great employment opportunities to our community but it connected Galion to the supply chain necessary for our businesses and industries to thrive. By the early 1900s, Galion was home to the largest hub, spoke, and wheel factory in the state. We also manufactured toys, brooms, furniture, buggies, hearses, tile, bricks, steel vaults, and more; our communityboastedover200retailbusinessesandweprintedtwodailynewspapers!

Galion’s Big Four Depot on North Washington Street was dedicated in 1900. It served as division headquarters for the Cleveland, Chicago, Cincinnati, and St. Louis railroad, commonly called the Big Four. Five years ago, a community pavilion was constructed next to the Big Four Depot and is available for events, art displays, and live performances. The project was funded with a $200,000 grant from the Ohio Cultural Facilities Commission. The pavilion represents the first step in a multi-phase project to restore the depot. Leading this effort is Galion Depot, Inc., a non-profit board formed in August 2015, comprised of representatives from the Galion History Center, Preserving Galion, Friends of the Big Four Depot, the City of Galion, and additional community members. Its purpose is to preserve, restore, and rehabilitate the Galion Big Four Depot and to instruct the public on the community’s richrailroadandindustrialheritage.

SPOOKY SIGHTS & SCENES
If haunted houses and paranormal phenomena interest you, then a visit to one of our area’s spooky sites should be on your itinerary! Local authors have been inspired to write books about the apparent abundance of supernatural activity here. (Ghostly Galion by Rachel Mendell and A Chronicle of Curiosity by the late Walter F. Williams are both available at Galion Public Library.)
Brownella Cottage is said to be haunted by the ghosts of iconoclastic “heretic” Bishop William Montgomery Brown and his wife, Ella. Their historic home has been rated the seventh most haunted location in Ohio, according to the GalionHistoryCenter, whichownsthehomeand offers paranormal tours, ghost walks, and public paranormal investigations from April through October.
According to local lore, every Halloween night –the anniversary of the bishop’s death in 1937 – his ghost can be seen walking the glass causeway between the house and his study. The My Ghost Story television series ran an episode on Brownella Cottage in which several people shared tales of their encounters with what they believed tohavebeenaghost.
Several other sites in Galion and Crestline are rumored to be inhabited by ghosts, including Galion Public Library, theBigFourTrainDepot, and many private residences. The historic Ohio State Reformatory – recognized internationally as the location used to film The Shawshank Redemption, as wellasforits‘BloodPrison’experience in the Halloween season, and the Inkcarceration music and tattoo festival each summer – is also only a short drive away in Mansfield. In the attic, children have been heard playing in the old (and no longer active) pool and shooting a basketball into the old hoop, which still stands. Their laughter has been said to echo down the stairwell. In the main room in the basement, there has been a plethora of activity, ranging from electronics switching on and off, to flashlights lighting up and dying, to a deep voice and shadow of who some believe is the former Native American who lived on the land before the Gills, known as Solomon. The Gills’ son Jimmy has been heard and felt in this area on the occasion aswell.”
