« THE TRAVELLER’S CLOAKROOM »
Dévoilant des sculptures en bronze et en marbre inédites, l’exposition “Le Vestiaire du Voyageur” présente le rapport que la sculpture de Bruno Catalano entretient avec le textile. L’artiste expose également des modèles originaux de sacs, de valises, de tabliers et d’autres tissus provenant de son atelier du sud de la France.
Alors que la sculpture occidentale entretient une histoire étroite avec le nu, les ‘Voyageurs’ représentés par Bruno Catalano sont habillés de vêtements contemporains, que le travail de la patine vient souligner et sublimer. Ce vestiaire authentique, se compose d’habits simples, souvent usagés par le temps. Dans leurs plis, transparaissent les histoires et les trajectoires des personnages : leur apparence ordinaire devient alors héroïque.
Ce solo show propose également une approche du drapé que Bruno Catalano utilise dans ses marbres. Tous les soirs, le sculpteur recouvre ses modèles en argile d’un linge afin d’éviter qu’ils ne sèchent. Vecteur de modernité et d’expressivité, le textile inscrit une sculpture dans son époque tout en lui conférant une dimension universelle.

Featuring never-before-seen bronze and marble sculptures, the exhibition «The Traveller’s Cloakroom « presents the relationship that Bruno Catalano’s sculpture has with textiles. The artist also presents original models of bags, suitcases, aprons and other fabrics from his studio in the south of France.
Traditionally, Western sculpture has a longstanding relationship with the nude, Bruno Catalano’s ‘Travellers’ distinguish themselves as dressed in contemporary garments, highlighted and enhanced by patina. This authentic wardrobe is made up of simple, often timeworn clothes. Their folds reveal the stories and trajectories of the characters: their ordinary appearance becomes heroic.
This solo show also showcases Bruno Catalano’s use of drapery in his marbles. Every evening, the sculptor covers his clay models with a cloth to prevent them from drying out. Vector of modernity and expressiveness, textiles inscribe a sculpture in its own era, as well as granting it a universal dimension.

BRUNO CATALANO, AN INVITATION TO TRAVEL
Artiste des Voyageurs, Bruno Catalano fait escale de visage en visage le temps d’une sculpture, cherchant à saisir en chacun de ses modèles le bagage singulier qu’il transporte avec lui. La série devenue emblématique et qu’il poursuit encore aujourd’hui a commencé en 1995 comme le point de résolution d’une épopée familiale et le nouveau départ d’une aventure artistique.
Quand il est né au Maroc en 1960, il était déjà le fruit de différents périples. Sa famille, d’origine francoitalienne, aurait des ancêtres Juifs chassés d’Espagne au XVe siècle et réfugiés en Sicile avant de s’installer en Afrique du Nord. Il a dix ans lorsqu’ils quittent le pays pour venir s’établir à Marseille. Puis, formé par son père au métier d’électricien, il entame à vingt ans sa vie professionnelle en travaillant sur des bateaux pour une compagnie maritime, puis entre à la SNCM.
Il est encore loin de l’art, mais cette expérience restera déterminante dans la construction de sa sensibilité. C’est avec des amis, qu’il découvre d’abord l’artisanat des masques de cuir, puis il se consacre à l’argile à partir de 1991. Déterminé à maîtriser ce matériau, il s’inscrit dans un atelier de modelage et de dessin, et complète sa formation d’autodidacte par ses lectures. Pas à pas, Bruno Catalano s’installe dans son propre atelier, acquiert son propre four, et fait enfin de la sculpture son activité principale. Elle gagne une reconnaissance officielle quand, en 2001, la mairie du 5ème arrondissement de Marseille lui confie l’exécution d’un buste d’Yves Montand pour orner le square qui lui est dédié. Il inaugure ainsi une production d’oeuvres d’art publique qui va devenir le coeur de son travail.
As an artist of travellers, Bruno Catalano makes a stopover from face to face for the duration of a sculpture, seeking to capture in each of his models the singular baggage that he carries with him.
The series that has become emblematic and that he continues to work on today began in 1995 as the resolution of a family epic and the new beginning of an artistic adventure.
When he was born in Morocco in 1960, he was already the fruit of various journeys. His family, of Franco-Italian origin, had Jewish ancestors who had been expelled from Spain in the 15th century and taken refuge in Sicily before settling in North Africa. He was ten years old when they left the country to settle in Marseille. Then, trained by his father as an electrician, he began his professional life at the age of twenty by working on boats for a shipping company, then joined the SNCM.
He is still far from art, but this experience will remain a determining factor in the construction of his sensitivity. It was with friends that he first discovered the craft of leather masks, then he devoted himself to clay from 1991. Determined to master this material, he enrolled in a modelling and drawing workshop, and completed his self-taught training by reading. Step by step, Bruno Catalano set up his own workshop, acquired his own kiln, and finally made sculpture his main activity. It gained official recognition when, in 2001, the town hall of the 5th arrondissement of Marseille entrusted him with the execution of a bust of Yves Montand to decorate the square dedicated to him. He thus inaugurated a production of public works of art which will become the heart of his work.
