Seeds of Change planted for sustainable Year 9s
Galen’s Year 9 Seeds of Change Integrated Studies students Charlie Eames, Charlie York, John Blake, Charlotte Harris and Lily Cairns pictured among their thriving school garden. During term 2, Galen’s year 9 classes have been focussing on food sustainability and how what we eat can change the world. Through the ‘Seeds of Change’ course as part of the Integrated Studies unit, the cohort has learnt how to eat more sustainably and what we can do in the future to create a more sustainable environment for us and the people around us. In addition to theory work, the course is complemented by practical work in the Galen school garden, whereby students have been hard at work trying to create a garden that is sustainable whilst also creating a safe and fun environment for classes in the future. The students have been busy making wicking beds that use less water with the hope of producing lots of food for the school and community. Galen was lucky enough to be the recipient of the Scotsburn Nurseries - Seedling Tray Package
Grant to help facilitate the program, and the students’ veggie garden is thriving! Year 9 student Charlotte Harris commented, “By the end of the unit we are hoping to take away ways we can become more sustainable in the way we eat and live with our friends and family. The seed has been planted in our brains, now we just have to take care of it.”
