Mostly a "locals" beach although some encountered Europeans and other travelers there. Modern restroom/changing facilities and an outdoor shower. Tent covered picnic tables available on a first come first served basis but people are more than willing to share. The closest motels and restaurants are in Crystal River but the Cookin' Good catering truck is on station at the beach with a variety of sandwiches, snacks and drinks at reasonable prices. Fort Island Gulf beach is not for everyone but it's a great stop for those traveling the great Florida west coast highway 19/98 and folks who live in North Central Florida looking for the closest sandy bottom Gulf beach.
