MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE The symbolism behind the Snellville Veterans Memorial Chad Alexander Smith As a graduate student at Princeton University I took a seminar titled Psychology and Architecture. During that fall semester I was introduced to Carl Jung the psychiatrist and psychotherapist who founded analytical psychology. Jung reasoned that symbolism transfers mere objects into significance. Anything can become a symbol, but specific forms and motifs have recurred throughout history (endowing these objects with importance).

During all periods in history the artist is the spokesman of the spirit of his age. As such, memorials are the ideas of their time set in stone. Jung would argue that a memorial offers a view of life, that it expresses in form what we feel in our soul, with the loftiest of intentions to guide men and women towards better knowing themselves.

The Snellville Veterans Memorial started out as Mayor Pro Tem Tom Witts’ vow to relight the flame on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial which was moved to the grounds of Snellville’s Municipal Complex from the former City Hall.

The idea grew from the eternal flame to an inclusive memorial which honors the veterans of all wars. The project took three years to complete.

During those three years, the small group working towards this goal was determined to ensure the structure paid respectful homage to the men and women who have served to guarantee the freedoms we enjoy each day.

Mayor Pro Tem Witts was introduced to Architect Chad Smith by Council Member Barbara Bender. According to Witts, “Chad and I met for the first time at City Hall after Barbara Bender suggested we meet. Together we walked out to the site of the Memorial. Ten minutes later, Chad drew his vision of what our Memorial should look like. Neither of us ever looked back ... it was perfect. There is very little difference from that first rough drawing to the beautiful end product that we see today.”

Smith, a former Snellville City Council Member, explains the significance of the symbolism used in the memorial to convey Snellville’s appreciation, respect and pride of veterans in our community.

By arranging recognizable symbols into form, the Snellville Veterans Memorial seeks to elicit a response in the perceiver, to elevate his or her spirit. Five symbols are used in the design: the circle, the body, fire, water and stone.

The Circle – The circle appears throughout history from primitive sun worship to modern religion, always representing completeness. In turn, the memorial wall is designed in the shape of a half circle signifying a balance between the holding on and letting go of the perceiver (acting as an avenue towards personal wholeness).

The Body – The arrangement of the memorial is dictated by the proportions of the human figure, specifically the Golden Section. These geometries of the body informed architectural decisions and in turn unify the visual construction, provide a sense of order, and heighten a sense of continuity.

The golden section is defined geometrically as a line that is divided such that the lesser proportion is to the greater as the greater is to the whole. It is a relationship that has been in use ever since the days of antiquity. The Greeks recognized the dominating role the Golden Section played in the proportioning of the human body. Believing that both man and his temples should belong to a higher universal order, these same proportions were reflected in their temple structures.

Proportions of note within the memorial (refer to illustration): • The distance from the tile walls to the edge of the fountain is the same distance as the distance from the ground to the top of the wall.

• The distance from the edge of the trough to the tile wall is the distance of an outstretched arm allowing a person to touch the tiles on the veteran’s wall.

• The height of the flame is two-persons’ high.

• Each of the seven tile walls forms a square equal to the height and width of a person.

• The height of the veterans’ name is not higher than eye level. When looking at the names, the observer’s head is bowed forming a posture of gratitude.

Fire (eternal flame) – Memorials often use an eternal flame to symbolize remembrance. For the Veterans Memorial, the flame is designed as the highest point to place the greatest significance on the remembrance of the veterans.

The stainless steel sculpture that supports the flame was designed and made locally by David and Kathy Emanuel. It is comprised of five supporting legs representing the five branches of the United States military. Below the flame, a stainless steel military star floats at the surface of the water pointing to the falling water.

Within the wall of water the perceiver sees their own reflection, encouraging a moment of self-reflection.

Stone – Stone is a symbol of permanence. The epigram “Freedom is Never Free” is inscribed within the stone entablature. The veteran’s names on the wall below support or “hold up” these words acknowledging that the freedom as we know it would not be possible without the sacrifice of our veterans.

Chad Alexander Smith is an award winning architect; artist and entrepreneur. He has been involved in politics, serving as a former Mayor Pro-Tem for the City of Snellville. He is the President of CAS Architecture. CAS has developed a reputation for designing buildings and structures that are equally programmatically and technically innovative as they are cost and resource conscious.

Water – Water is an ancient symbol of refreshment. The sound of the falling water at the memorial evokes a feeling of peace, transferring the perceiver from the outside world to a place of tranquility and reflection. As the perceiver makes their way to the falling water, they discover etched on the wall behind the water the words: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

THE MARKET IS OPEN!

The Snellville Farmers’ Market opened for its fifth season on June 7th. The market is held on the Towne Green every Saturday, June through September, from 8 am to noon.

“We have another wonderful season planned,” said Gretchen Schulz, who chairs the committee that administers the awardwinning market. Last year the market placed first in Georgia and first in the nation in its size category in a contest sponsored by American Farmland Trust.

The market is totally administered by a dedicated group of volunteers who find it is compensation enough to know they are doing something good for their community. Marilyn Swinney, one of those volunteers, is always stationed on Oak Road as customers cross the street to the market entrance. “As we welcome our customers to the market, their appreciation and compliments just make volunteering so worthwhile,” she said.

Many vendors return year after year and have formed many friendships at the market. “We always look forward to the Snellville Farmers’ Market,” said Cass Fraunfelder of Finch Creek Farm in Winder. “It is our 18-week family reunion in the summer. We reminisce about the market the other 34 weeks of the year.”

kinda like a family reunion. For the vendors that have been there every year, fellow vendors, volunteers, and even customers become like an extension of your family. I love the sense of community this market has. It’s the friendliest and most fun market I’ve ever been a part of.”

One of the goals of the Snellville Farmers’ Market is to make locally grown, nutritious foods available to the community. In most cases, the produce brought to the market was picked just the day before in the farmers’ fields. The market provides the opportunity for customers to talk directly with those farmers to learn how the produce is grown and to get preparation suggestions.

Nick Carse, owner of King of Pops, another vendor who has been with the market since the first year, agrees. “When I grew up there was no Snellville Farmers’ Market, but I think it has made a world of difference in the community, both by bringing education on local, sustainable food and also a great community space where people can get to know their neighbors and make lasting connections with those who grow their food.”

Continuing a long tradition originally hosted by the First Baptist Church of Snellville, the Snellville Tourism and Trade Association will present an unforgettable 4th of July experience in the heart of Snellville at the Towne Center. Star Spangled Snellville begins at 3:00 p.m. with family-friendly entertainment, including the tastes and smells of some of your favorite festival foods on the Towne Green along with a large playground of inflatables, train rides and a space ball. A whole host of games will entertain attendees all afternoon, such as a watermelon-eating contest, cake walks, and a cookie walk. Food vendors include Texas Roadhouse, Rey’s Cuban Cafe, Lions Club, Dominic’s NY Brick Oven Pizza, Shrimp Bucket, ChickFil-A, and many others. Vendors will be sharing some of our favorites such as: hot boiled peanuts, funnel cakes, and sno cones.

The Stephen Lee Band and the 50-piece Gwinnett County Band will entertain us thrroughout the day. Snellville’s singing policeman, Thad Clark, will perform the National Anthem. The fireworks display begins at dusk, and will be accented with patriotic music.

Come in your best red, white and blue, and bring your blankets and chairs to assure your seats for the music and fireworks show.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT SNELLVILLE ART COMMISSION It’s not the High, but the artists are local and admission is FREE! Snellville’s Art Commission works to expand the community’s appreciation of art by providing public access to collections. The city hosts a gallery at Snellville’s City Hall, exhibiting a different artist each month. In June and July, you’ll find the impressionistic paintings of Raphael Sagage on exhibit Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

NEW LONDON THEATRE’S BROADWAY BOUND CHILDREN’S THEATRE SUMMER CAMP Snellville is home to the New London Theatre, an all-volunteer, nonprofit theater group. There’s still a summer full of fun for those with a dramatic flair! New London Theatre offers weekly theme camps for ages 5-17. Classes are daily from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and cost $185 per week (10% discount for additional weeks).

Regal Snellville Oaks Stadium 14 at 2125 East Main Street has movies for all ages and they host a $1 Summer Movie Express which shows family fun movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. You can sign up for notices, alerts, specials and advanced ticket purchases. Carmike 12 at 1905 Scenic Highway hosts a Summer Kids Series on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. throughout the summer with family favorites for $4.00 which includes a small popcorn and small drink.

GET OUTSIDE BRISCOE PARK There’s fun to be found in Snellville’s Briscoe Park! The pool is open daily starting at noon for the most memorable of summertime activities. Take in some tennis, or find your way around the lake. The walking trail through the shade at the park is 1.2 miles with exercise equipment set up at intervals just in case you wanted to do a little workout. Picnic tables make it a special place to enjoy dinner “out”. The schedule for pool and activities at the park can be found on pages 24-28.

ONE PERSON’S TRASH is the city’s treasure

Tucked behind the Elizabeth H. Williams Public Library on Marigold Road and next to Briscoe Park is one of Snellville’s best kept secrets.

Built in 2005, the Snellville Recycling Center is an awardwinning facility that collected 797 tons of materials such as plastics, yard clippings, scrap iron, newspapers and electronics last year.

“We are fortunate to have such an outstanding Recycling Center here in Snellville and offer so many options for recycling,” said Public AWARDS AND GRANTS Works Director Gaye WON BY THE SNELLVILLE Johnson who oversees the RECYCLING CENTER Recycling Center.

On any given day, a steady stream of vehicles hauling yard waste or stacks of used appliances finds its way to the $1.87 million facility. On weekends the number of cars can reach as high as 500, Johnson said.

For city resident Linda Bligen, the location is convenient and so is the process of dropping off her recyclables.

“I kind of kill two birds with one stone,” she said, dropping a bag of yard trimmings to the container below. “I drop this stuff off and then go to the library. It’s not too much work. It doesn’t warrant someone having to come pick it up when I can drop it off myself.”

The Recycling Center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Anyone, city resident or not, is allowed to use the recycling containers to dump newspaper, glass or electronics. However only city residents can dump their yard trimmings. One trip or a visit to the facility with one pick-up truckload per day is allowed to be dropped off by residents at no cost. A truck and trailer is considered two loads. One additional load will be accepted per day at a cost of $15.

There residents can toss their recyclables into the “dumping wall,” a 300foot wall which holds 11 containers for visitors to sort their waste into.

There is also a section for yard waste such as limbs and yard trimmings.

2013 - Distinguished Service Award for Residents can simply pull Waste Reduction (3rd Place) in the state up to the ledge of the wall and dump their waste into the containers, basically sorting the recyclables themselves.

There is no lifting involved which residents say provides an easy delivery.

2014 Shark Tank BUSINESS PITCH COMPETITION Students from Brookwood High School come out on top.

This year over 30 high school students, engaged in 18 business start-ups, participated in the 2014 Shark Tank business competition pitches. A Brookwood High School duo with a love for landscaping survived this year’s Shark Tank and won the Gwinnett Young Entrepreneur of the Year award from the Entrepreneurship Alliance. Erica Mills and Caitlin Costello, of Brookwood, convinced a panel of judges their business model of a landscaping business was stronger than four other young entrepreneurs from Brookwood, South Gwinnett and Central Gwinnett High Schools.

Los Chiferos Clothing, launched by Ruben Perez of SGHS came in second place.

What put Mills and Costello’s business, Weed’em & Reap over the top? “Our passion for it,” Costello said. “We plan on doing this after this is all over.”

The award package for the Best Young Entrepreneur winner includes an iPad and a copy of Microsoft Office 2013. Andy Morgan, Esq. of the Morgan Law Group has donated a legal consultation to the winner, Hamilton Financial has donated two hours of consultation time, business plan assistance will be donated by Business Plans and More and Webb, Tanner,

Another great year for the Entrepreneurship Alliance.

SGHS teacher Scott Allen mentored his students for the competition. He said he was proud of their efforts in the competition. “Every one of those kids wants to succeed on their own,” he said.

With a goal towards continuing to expand the services offered to our community, C.O.O. Callie Andrews and her team have worked two years to bring the Air Evac Lifeteam to Eastside Medical Center in Snellville. The service was officially welcomed with a ribbon cutting on June 12th.

Air Evac Lifeteam has been serving communities with air ambulance care since 1985 and Eastside Medical’s team is the 117th station in the United States. With the mission of providing access to definitive healthcare, the Air Evac crew at Eastside will have 17 employees on Eastside’s campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year.

The air ambulance program consists of a medically equipped helicopter to transport patients to the nearest appropriate medical facility in a life or limb threatening emergency by utilizing the fastest route to medical care.

SUMMER IN THE GARDEN Tomatoes are ripening on the vines, beautiful squash blossoms are giving birth to tender yellow squash, fragrant basil and other herbs are imparting lovely smells, apples are forming on the trees in the little orchard, and bees are as busy as bees can be as they fly from their hive in the garden and then from plant to plant carrying pollen as they go. It is summer in the Community Garden @ Snellville.

More than 30 gardeners have rented beds for the 2014 season and are producing a bounty of fruits and vegetables for their families. The gardeners also work cooperatively to provide produce for the Southeast Gwinnett Co-op. One bed in the garden is designated for the Co-op and, in addition to what is produced by that bed, gardeners are also making donations from their own beds. “At this time of the year we are making about two trips a week to the Co-op with fresh vegetables,” said Kurt Schulz, who co-chairs the garden committee.

An exciting addition to the garden this season is the calendar garden, which is located along the front fence and will provide seasonal color throughout the year. The plants in the garden were propagated and donated by Gwinnett Technical College.

“We are very grateful for this donation,” said Ileen Meggison, a master gardener and committee member who was instrumental in forming the partnership with the school. “The calendar garden would not have been possible on our limited budget without this help from Gwinnett Tech.”

S.N.A.P. Snellville Neighborhood Alert Program The Snellville Neighbor Alert Program grew out of a single neighborhood watch program that was started by James and Shelly Hipps along with Tricia Rawlins after their houses were broken into close to four years ago.

Rawlins saw the success of their neighborhood watch program and found that linking to other neighborhood watches would provide Snellville Police Department extra eyes and ears around the city. Thus the beginnings of S.N.A.P. and what has now grown to 48 neighborhoods participating in the program.

Neighborhood representatives communicate with our SPD to watch for patterns of crime in and around our city. The Snellville Police Department has graciously provided the group with Captain Greg Perry to be the police liaison to the group bringing the SPD and neighborhoods together for the betterment of our community. The alert program focuses on communications and education.

S.N.A.P. is a group of concerned citizens who are committed to communicating with Snellville’s Police Department and educating the representatives and liaisons to recognize signs of concern and what to look for in OUR neighborhoods. If we see something, we say something!

OUR CHERISHED PAST The residents of Eastside Gardens Assisted Living in Snellville have led lives that have been enriched by family, dear friends, interesting and challenging careers, hobbies and travels. But one thing they all agree on: It’s the little things that have meant the most over the course of their lives.

Several of the residents, with the help of Molly Fowler, Healthy Generations Program Director at Eastside Gardens, and Eric Bachman of Snellville Framing and Fine Art, recently created a collage painting, which they entered in the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) art showcase. The canvas features a tree, painted by Bachman, with personal photos and pictures and words from magazines selected by the residents to convey the message that “little things” are what they have treasured the most. “Little things” like the love of a devoted spouse, a grandchild’s smile, time with family, a special friendship, a faithful canine companion, a cat that warmed their lap for many years, favorite foods and beautiful flowers. The message is one that many of us who are caught up in a hectic lifestyle should strive to always remember.

The Snellville Commerce Club awarded two $1,000 scholarships in May to two very deserving high school seniors. The Scholarships are open to students who are involved in their community and participate in either the FBLA or DECA programs that teach business values.

The first scholarship was awarded to Sarah Lawley from South Gwinnett High School. Sarah plans to pursue an Animal Science/Agriculture degree at the University of Georgia with a goal to own a farm that raises and trains thoroughbred race horses.

Snellville Police Department CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY The Snellville Citizens Police Academy Alumni Asscociation is a non-profit organizantion comprised of Snellville Citizens Police Academny graduates. The Alumni’s main objectives are to enhance the relationship between the citizens and the Snellville Police Department. The Academy, founded in the spring of 2003, is a rapidly growing 12-week program held in the spring and fall of each year. It is designed to educate the public about the operation of the Snellville Police Department and how community involvement can help deter crime.

Introducing STAT THE CAT He’s cool, he’s charming and he’s furry. He’s Snellville Tourism & Trade’s new mascot STAT the Cat! Since making his debut at the Beach Blast on May 31, STAT has been bringing a lot of buzz to the city, sharing his enthusiastic spirit with all who meet him. Snellville Spirit recently got the feisty feline to sit down long enough for an interview during which he shared his thoughts on his job and the community.

Snellville Spirit: Welcome to the city of Snellville STAT! What were your first impressions of our city?

STAT the Cat: Snellville is the coolest! A purrfect place to work, live and play.

My very first impression when I met everyone at the Beach Blast was, WOW... what a sense of community.

SS: How did you come about working with Snellville Tourism & Trade and what were you hired to do?

STAT: This is the greatest job for a cool cat like me. Get to party at all the STAT events and hang out with all the Snellville cats and kittens. My job is to have as much fun as I possibly can.

SS: How old are you and what do you like to do for fun?

STAT: I’m on the first of my nine lives. My new favorite thing is rocking with my new friends and showing everyone how much fun we have in Snellville.

SS: What was it like meeting all those people at your first event at the Beach Blast May 31st?

STAT: It was purrrfectly awesome, everyone welcomed me to the community and we had a blast. I felt like I was on the red carpet in Hollywood with so many people taking my picture, made me feel like the King of all Cats.

SS: What is your favorite part of being a mascot?

STAT: Hanging with all my new pals and rocking with the kids. I love to make people smile and laugh!

SS: At the Beach Blast you were with a lot of other mascots. Who was your favorite and did you pick up any pointers?

STAT: I was so excited to see all my new feathered and furry pals, but they were in my sandbox and when it came to giving pointers, STAT the CAT pawed his way to the top. We had a great time playing games and I even won the blue ribbon at the dance off and musical chairs. It was fun movin’ and groovin’ on the Towne Green in the mascot parade too.

SS: They say Snellville is a great place to live because of all the volunteers.

What are your impressions of the volunteers you’ve met in Snellville?

STAT: Those are some really cool cats. They really know how to work hard and play hard. They are the whole ball of yarn!

SS: Anything else you’d like to add?

STAT: Come on out to our Snellville events and play it cooool with the new cat!! Keep your eyes open, as you never know where you may see STAT the CAT in town. If seen, proceed with caution as laughter may be infectious.

STRAWBERRY ANGEL-FOOD CAKE 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 cup cake flour 12 egg whites 1 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

1 cup granulated sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1/4 teaspoon salt

PREHEAT OVEN TO 375 1. In a medium bowl combine powdered sugar and cake flour - set aside.

2. In a large bowl beat egg whites until foamy.

3. Beat in granulated sugar - 2 tablespoons at a time - on high speed.

4. Add vanilla, almond extract and salt and beat until stiff and glossy.

5. Sprinkle powdered sugar/flour mixture over egg whites 1 cup at a time. Mix with a spatula just until sugar-flour mixture disappears.

6. Pour batter into a 10-inch tube pan.

7. Bake 35 minutes. Cake will be done when the top is brown and cracked.

8. Remove from oven and cool upside down on a heat proof funnel or bottle for about 2 hours. Loosen sides of cake with a knife and place on a serving plate.

Strawberry Filling and Icing 2 quarts of fresh strawberries 3 8-ounce containers of Cool Whip

CAPRESE SALAD WITH BALSAMIC DRESSING 3 large tomatoes 1 pound fresh mozzarella Several springs of fresh basil Salt and pepper Balsamic dressing (bottled)) Slice tomatoes and mozzarella into 1/4 inch slices.

Arrange alternately on a decorative plate. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Arrange basil leaves over the salad. Just before serving drizzle with balsamic dressing.

1. Wash and drain strawberries. Cut one quart of strawberries into little pieces and combine with 1 container of Cool Whip.

2. In between the outer edge of the cake and the center hole cut about a 2-inch moat all the way around. Pull out the cake leaving about an inch on the bottom.

3. Fill the moat with the Cool Whip/strawberry mixture. Be sure to fill the center hole.

4. Ice the cake with the remaining cartons of Cool Whip.

Decorate the top and bottom edges of the cake with strawberries.
