Oro Collection - Boutique Hotel in DTLA

Los Angeles, CA

Fall 2023

Instructor: Sona Gevorkyan

This proposal aims to reintroduce the rich history of the jewelry industry in the heart of Los Angeles. Located within close proximity to the jewelry district in downtown, the newly designed dress seeks to reflect the subtlety and craftsmanship of jewelry making. Looking into the history of the building itself, it served as a jewelry manufacturing center for several years. This led to the design of a dress that reflects the jewelry industry, and pays homage to the building’s past.

In order to welcome users into the space, the façade system was lifted and created the only moment in the building where the body is exposed, without its dress. By extending the new body of the building past the existing footprint, nooks of expansions were created. These expanded spaces are different on each floor, based on the interior programmatic arrangements, and different opacities of glazing are used based on privacy needs of the interior spaces. Moving to the upper floors, they become less and less spacious, leading the body of the building to become slimmer at the top. The new dress of the building loosely follows the shape of the body, and covers the entirety of the building except the ground floor entrance. There are three façade systems used: a dense diagonal mesh system on the ground floor to relate to the pedestrian scale, a chain cladding system, and a larger scale diagonal mesh. In order to ensure the comfort of the hotel users, the chain cladding system would be installed using a movement limiter and being fastened from the bottom and top. Each of the floors have varying experiences, through the use of different facade systems, and expanded spaces that are dependent on the interior arrangements of the units.

Conjunction & Correlation at Piazza dei Ciompi

Florence, Italy

Fall 2022

Instructor: Paola Giaconia, Marco Brizzi, Achille Michelizzi

In collaboration with Ivy Baxter

Located in the heart of Florence’s historic center, Piazza dei Ciompi was founded in the 1930s and connects the city center with the Santa Croce neighborhood. The rebuilding of Loggia del Pesce added to its importance as it increased foot traffic and and interest. This proposal introduces a kindergarten and a public library to the piazza, while preserving the neighborhood fabric and identity.

This project’s main aim is to create a centralized communal area by aligning and correlating the library and kindergarten with the existing loggia and surrounding buildings. The communal space creates a conjunction, blending the programs together and becoming a singular place of socialization and interchange. The centralized courtyard places an emphasis on the idea of unity and encourages social interactions. A unified mass with a unique footprint was created by combining the existing street and loggia grids.

An emphasis was placed on blending the indoor and outdoor spaces while maintaining separation of public and private programs through the use of solid vs transparent materials. The roof forms were created by projecting the combination of street and loggia grid in section, creating pitched forms that mirror the silhouettes of the surrounding buildings. Moments of glazing were introduced in areas that open up to the public, such as the seating stairs that face Brunelleschi’s dome. The landscape forms were extracted from the same grid, and assigned for vegetation and open public uses, such as the weekly flea market. This project seeks to create a public atmosphere of connection and interaction through the introduction of much needed programs in Florence’s historic center.

San Donnino, Florence, Italy

Spring 2023

Instructor: Paola Giaconia, Marco Brizzi, Achille Michelizzi

In collaboration with Ivy Baxter

The word “unearth” can be interpreted to have multiple meanings.

1) to discover, to reveal, to make public, to dig up and to excavate.

2) un-earth, something that is not earth, artificial, an intervention to the earth. The incinerator of San Donnino is a long established landmark that has characterized the town’s history for the past 50 years. It was in operation for a short period of time, but its effects on the community’s health and quality of life have been significant. To counteract these negative effects and to transform the area surrounding the incinerator, the proposal aims to “unearth” the site, to build up an artificial landscape and establish a new cultural landmark.

Located 10km west of the metropolitan city of Florence, providing a new cultural hub for San Donnino was deemed essential. This would serve as a direct connection with the incinerator and revitalize the area.

The resulting design encompasses gently sloping hills that create an atmosphere of cultural connectivity and interaction with the environment. These hills include meandering pathways that lead users all throughout the site, staying true to the natural forms of the newly-created hills. Visitors can approach the site from the various points of access, which create moments of anticipation leading up to different parts of the project. The combination of these elements, the hills and the cultural identity of San Donnino, were unearthed by the transformation of the previously contaminated land. With this proposal, we aimed to bring new life into the community of San Donnino by encouraging opportunities for education and accessible spaces to all.

Silver Lake Mixed-Use Housing

Los Angeles, CA

Spring 2022

Instructor: Anton Schneider

The proposal for a mixed-use housing includes ten units; one twobedroom loft, one two-bedroom apartment, four one-bedroom apartments, and four studio apartments. Keeping Silver Lake’s demographics in mind, this housing development is intended for young professionals. On the ground floor, there is an architecture office space, a retail space, as well as a covered parking space for the public. There is a private parking garage on the underground floor, which is accessible solely to tenants for safety purposes and provides parking for the various users of the building.

The building is designed around a central courtyard on the plateau level, which has moments of compression and expansion, looking out to surrounding views of the site. Since the building is intended for young professionals, there are plenty of community spaces designed within the structure. The building’s amenities include a multi-purpose community room, a gymnasium, an outdoor yoga space, and a rooftop deck which has a communal garden and barbecue area. Each apartment unit is designed in a way to provide direct access to their respective balcony spaces from the main entrance. Another key feature of the building is that the occupiable units are designed around the community spaces in order to further encourage neighborly interactions. In terms of materials, the building is covered with horizontal wooden members that are attached to its primary plaster surface.

This proposal provides housing to a highly desired neighborhood in Los Angeles, and serves as a means of connection and interchange within the population of young professionals.
