See The Lights!

The history of Christmas lights is a bright and cheery tale that begins with candles on Christmas trees in 17th century Germany. Things got much safer and more exciting with the invention of electric lights by Thomas Edison in the late 19th century. From there, it’s been a journey of innovation, with bubble lights, twinkling lights, and miniatures all adding to the festive glow. The energy-efficient LED lights of today have become a staple in both indoor and outdoor holiday decorations, lighting up homes and streets in dazzling displays. So, whether it’s a simple string of lights or an elaborate synchronized show, Christmas lights continue to bring joy and sparkle to the holiday season.

HOUSE GUESTS

10 Tips to Make Their Stay More Enjoyable

Yes, it’s a bit exhausting to have extra people within your walls, and yes, it does provide more work – for a time. But really, having houseguests can be enjoyable and benefit everyone. They usually play with the children, which everyone enjoys, and it provides the hosts with a nice break from the hum-drum of daily life. Hosting guests doesn’t have to be a pain – it can be something you look forward to. Here are 10 ways you can help visitors feel more at home:

1. Be yourself. Truly. Most house guests aren’t expecting a perfectly immaculate house, and if they are, there’s no point in loading your shoulders with the pressure to try. The best kind of guests are there to see you, not you on stage.

2. Let your guests be themselves. Really mean it when you say, “make yourself at home.” If you’re willing to have guests, be willing to let them put their feet up on your coffee table.

3. Provide extra toiletries.

Have a basket of essentials that can be brought out for overnighters and leave it on the guest bathroom counter for them to help themselves. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy – just toothpaste, soap, lotion, shampoo and conditioner, and unopened toothbrushes.

4. Make things easy to find. When they first arrive, have all their needed towels either out on the bathroom counter, or on their bed or nightstand. If they’re early risers leave out some basic breakfast goodies for them to help themselves. If they arrive after a long trip, put a little basket of refreshments on their nightstand. A simple bottle of water, a package of nuts, maybe a banana, and a little welcome note can really make them feel welcome.

5. Keep coffee and tea on hand. Even if you don’t drink it, a coffee drinker is always thankful to have the means to make a cup of joe in the morning. It doesn’t have to be anything high-end if you don’t drink it, but make sure it’s fresh.

6. Create some simple extra touches. Place an inexpensive flower in a small vase on their nightstand. Provide a great-smelling candle and a book of matches. Make sure there’s an alarm clock available, too.

7. Provide reading material. Collect a few magazines and put them in an easy-to-reach basket near their bed. Maybe even select a good book of short stories (short stories are good, so that guests can actually finish what they’re reading, as opposed to a long novel).

8. Provide information about where you live. If they’re in town on vacation, provide some brochures about tourist spots, a map, and maybe something unique about where you live for them to enjoy while they’re in town.

9. Let them help around the house. Don’t put them to work, of course, but people will be more relaxed and feel less like an intruder if you say yes to their inevitable question, “Can I do anything?” Let them do something small, like set the silverware at the dinner table, or stir the soup bubbling on the stove.

10. Keep your immediate family’s time sacred. Do your best to still spend some quality time with just those in your household. This is especially true if you have small children, who don’t always understand why Mom is busier than usual, or why a new person is sleeping in their playroom.

Holiday Travel

Christmas getaways represent a rare opportunity for families who like to travel. Whether your kids are toddlers, teens, or all grown up, you can usually count on some time off from school and work for everyone to gather in one place. And one of the great things about Christmas vacations is they don’t have to be spent at home for everyone to have quality family time together. In fact, some of the best Christmas vacations for families are the trips where everyone’s traveling to a new and exciting destination (or hotel) that goes all in on Christmas spirit. If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas (whether snow or sand), here’s where to go for Christmas in the U.S., Caribbean, Europe, and Central America.

San Antonio, Texas

For hundreds of years, the home of the Alamo has adorned its iconic River Walk with Mexican Christmas lanterns believed to help light the way for the Holy Family. Families visiting San Antonio for Christmas vacations between mid-November and mid-January can immerse themselves in this awe-inspiring tradition either by foot or boat with Go Rio Cruises, a kid-friendly tour operator that even lets you stow strollers onboard.

The holiday magic continues at The DoSeum, San Antonio’s kids museum, which hosts an elaborate Winter Wonderland event once a year; and at the San Antonio Botanical Garden, whose enchanting grounds twinkle with more than a million Christmas lights. Celebrations continue underground at the Natural Bridge Caverns, where professional Christmas carolers’ voices echo 180 feet below the surface. There’s also ice skating, beautiful Christmas trees, and more, making San Antonio a fab place to spend the holidays.

Puerto Rico

Taking the award for world’s longest Christmas season, Puerto Rico makes it easy for families to plan Christmas vacations that suit their schedule and budget. Beginning the day after Thanksgiving and ending weeks after New Year’s Day, Puerto Rico’s Christmas celebrations comprise colorful street parties, boat parades, lights, lively music, and holiday dishes. And after the devastation caused by Hurricane Fiona, Puerto Rico is ready to welcome tourists back in time for the holidays.

One of the best places to visit for Christmas with family, San Juan is at the heart of Puerto Rico’s seasonal festivities. The city’s waterfront amphitheater, Bahia Urbana, becomes Navitown, a Christmas-themed carnival with rides, whimsical decorations, and a special rendition of Santa’s Workshop.

German Christmas Markets

Nowhere else in the world does Christmas vacations quite like Germany. The birthplace of the Christkindlmarkt could easily light up a map with its sheer number of Christmas markets, each commingled with intricate wooden huts selling everything from handcrafted toys and ornaments to fresh-cooked delicacies and warm gluhwein. While you really can’t go wrong with any German Christmas market destination, those in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Trier, and Dresden are particularly well regarded for their authenticity and kid-friendly atmosphere.

St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine’s annual Nights of Lights event, during which three million white lights illuminate the historic district from mid-November to late January, has been recognized as one of the world’s top light displays. In addition to this feast for the senses, families can savor the holiday spirit on Christmas vacations with cheerfully cheeky historical tours, St. Augustine’s annual Christmas Parade, and the Holiday Regatta of Lights. Landmark attractions such as the Castillo de San Marcos and the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum are also incorporated into the city’s Christmas experiences.

South Tyrol, Italy

Cocooned amongst fairy tale towns like Bolzano, Merano, Brunico, Vipiteno, and Bressanone, dramatic views of the Dolomites and Italian Alps serve as the backdrop to South Tyrol’s Christmas markets. Appearances by Santa Claus, horse-drawn carriages, Thun teddy bears, and the world-famous Angel of Bozen further make it one of the best places to visit for Christmas with your family.

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

About an hour north of Philadelphia in the Lehigh Valley is a town straight out of a Hallmark movie: Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. During the holiday season, the Christmas City makes kids’ wishes come true with a chance to read stories with Santa, get crafty with his elves, and participate in a gingerbread man decorating contest.

Bethlehem’s Main Street is lined with traditional Christmas markets (with some also indoors), while choir singers serenade visitors. Parents can have fun sipping their way along the Holiday Cocktail Trail. Bethlehem is also less than 20 minutes from the Delaware River Railroad, one of only a handful of tracks offering Christmas train rides themed to the Polar Express.

Coastal New England

Experiencing Christmas in New England’s small coastal towns and villages is like stepping back in time. You can get a taste of the region’s timeless traditions in three different states along the coast (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine) with festivities generally taking place from late November through December.

Noteworthy holiday celebrations can be found in Salem, Massachusetts; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; and Kennebunkport, Maine. These charming little cities bring the holiday magic to life with activities such as a holiday trolley ride with the Good Witch of Salem, a candlelight walk in Portsmouth, and a special visit from Santa in Kennebunkport, who arrives by lobster boat.

Madeira, Portugal

Madeira, Portugal, offers the best of both worlds for Christmas vacations: all the magical sights, smells, tastes, and sounds of a European Christmas plus warm weather. The city of Funchal‘s historic walking area, Avenida Arriaga, comes alive with Christmas carolers, illuminated botanical gardens, and tropical-themed Christmas markets selling handcrafted goods and mulled wine. Kids will revel in (snow-free) toboggan rides, the toy museum, and a storybook theme park for all ages.
