Alternative Learning Space INTERMEDIO
Architecture as a symbol of power for Third Italian diaspora
An ongoing wave of Italian migration has been called "third Italian diaspora".
With a strong fincancial incentive to emigrate, 700,000 of 5 million Italians living abroad are resident in the UK.
In this hypothesis diaspora rejects the notion that the migrants have characteristics that only relate to geographical territory.
Diaspora here is concerned with routes, the connections and movements rather than roots, the origins.
• 30% OF ITALIAN EMIGRANTS TO THE UK HOLD A UNIVERSITY DEGREE
• MANY EMIGRANTS ESCAPE THE POLITICAL UNCERTAINTIES IN THE GOVERNMENT OF ITALY
• HIGH NET-WORTH INDIVIDUALS RELOCATE BACK WITH EXPERIENCE AND WEALTH TO INVEST AND SETTLE DOWN PERMANENTLY IN THEIR HOME COUNTRY
Education
Connections
The multi-polar rather than uni-linear connections leads to a diaspora engaging in unique activities
Intermedio is a 21st Century political showcase of the Italian diaspora representing their connections, return and movement, adding to the historical context of EUR as a World's Fair.
The decentralised learning space advocates sharing of mixed ideas to further catalyse social and cultural development by utilising accrued experience and capital of the diaspora.
The complex structure represents the new political power, history and connections.
Site
Not every migration is an exodus
Dominance of spatial arrangement relative to their explicit or implicit aspects
Neutrality in overlap of two types of spaces demands a flexible structure
Connection by the vertical and horizontal links formed between the explicit and implicit spaces in different linear, rotated and mirrored arrangements.
PROGRAM - LATERALIZATION OF BRAIN FUNCTION
The functions are divided according to two types of learning spaces, the Explicit and the Implicit Several spatial layouts are tested for all learning functions by taking typical respective floor areas to derive an overlapping collage of connecting spaces in plan.

Curved plates are extracted by laser-cutting. Boundary plates flange across the edge following the curve and the rest of the frames are connected through the combined plates. Metal mesh is then installed on either side and shotcrete is applied on it to create the final freeform structure. The primary structure is a stable minimal surface constructed with sprayed concrete on steel lattice. The floors are reinforced concrete with some as waffle slabs to span larger spaces.

The Individual
is an artist, a hedonist and a family member. The single individuals need flexibility in a permanent house to accommodate the growing family and the subsequent use of space.
Work-from-home before it became the norm (2019).
This project was designed in my final year of BA Architecture (2019) as a sustainable solution to reducing carbon emissions from commute to work by building a 'work or home' community of creatives.
The Collective needs flexible space for social interaction achieved through exhibition.
The proposal aims to produce simple forms that reproduce complex relationships between the interior and exterior, the maker and the user. The public is attracted to the unique sights and sounds of the ‘work or home’ community.
Relationship between the individual and collective will inform the dialectic between permanence and flexibility.

The Individual
DESIGN CONCEPT
Introducing creative workspace near homes as a sustainable way of working.
• The collective reduces carbon footprint by living in spaces designed as per ecological/ building biology methods.
• A rational linear residential space develops a relationship with the public path passing through the site and merges in to a public bridge.
• The individual socially engages with the collective and visitors who are drawn to the unique sounds and crafts created by the ‘work or home’ community.
INNER SECTION IS DESIGNED FOR EXHIBITION WHILE THE OUTER IS A PATH FOR PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS TO CROSS THE DUAL CARRIAGEWAY (MAIN ROAD) UNDERNEATH
COMMUTE REST REST
EAT EAT
ENTERTAIN ENTERTAIN
By replicating the individual’s general work and home space a rational and linear arrangement of the collective’s achieved, which is then connected to a public path on the right and moprhs into a transitional space on top.

Urban farming |Migrant Cohousing | Residential development reGROWTH
An attempt is made "to break up the compactness of the selfcontained, often monotonous looking building volumes and give them more plasticity" (Corrodi & Spechtenhauser, 2008)
The migrant influx into France has increased the number of asylum seekers to over 100,000 with significant numbers of unaccommodated migrants settling in empty city pockets such as that in Caen and resorting to illicit work to survive on a daily basis. A more sustainable method of supporting migrants and a solution for continuous relocation is proposed through cohousing. Furthermore supply and demand of labourers is matched through professional integration of migrants in construction of the cohousing and residential building and employment in vertical farming.
• MOST MALE TEENAGERS WORK IN CONSTRUCTION AND ODD JOBS
• EDUCATING THEM IS CHALLENGING DUE TO RELOCATION DURING ASYLUM PROCESS
• SEVERAL WOMEN SQUATTERS ON THE SITE IN CAEN BECOME SEX WORKERS TO SURVIVE
