In the spring issue I mentioned that my new website was well on the way to completion. I’m delighted to say that it’s ‘live’ at last! There has already been significant visitor interest. Readers are entering events and information for free line entries. And advertisers’ business details are appearing on the great new facility ‘Grapevine Connections’. I had a ‘significant’ birthday which resulted in a present from my family of a wonderful, nostalgic trip to Sicily. My daughter and fiancé moved into their own home, I met up with a school friend I hadn’t had contact with in 45 years, we’ve had the Jubilee, and the Olympics will dominate much of the summer. I hope the next few months will be happy for everyone. Guildford gets involved in the Games Join in an exciting summer as Guildford welcomes the London 2012 Olympic Road Cycling, the Olympic Torch Relay and hosts Surrey’s only Celebrating the Torch event!
Olympic Torch Relay – Shere and Guildford The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will pass through Surrey, including Shere and Guildford, on Friday 20 July. This thrilling and historic day will give local people and visitors the chance to share the Olympic spirit, enjoy exciting entertainment and welcome the Olympic Flame to Surrey.
The Olympic Torch Relay Convoy will arrive in Shere at approximately 4.55pm and the Flame will be carried by Torchbearers along Gomshall Lane and Upper Street. It will then be driven to Godalming for its next stage. The Convoy will arrive by the roundabout near the Cathedral, just before 6.15pm. Torchbearers will then carry the Olympic Flame along: The Chase Madrid Road Guildford Park Road
Farnham Road
Bridge Street
Millbrook Guildford High Street and London Road.
We want to encourage as many residents as possible to line the streets to welcome the Olympic Flame. If you plan to join us, please think about your journey in advance. Celebrating the London 2012 Torch Relay – Stoke Park To finish the Torch Relay’s journey through Surrey, we are hosting a ticketed afternoon and evening celebration in the eastern part of Stoke Park. It will include local entertainment, family activities, regional food and drink, an exciting stage show and cauldron-lighting. All tickets for this Celebrating the London 2012 Torch Relay event on Friday 20 July are now sold out. If you are a ticket holder, you can find out more about the event at www.guildford.gov.uk/london2012 There will be no public parking at or near Stoke Park. Parking restrictions in Guildford will be strictly enforced. Guildford Spectrum park and ride will also be closed.
Olympic Road Cycling events – eastern Guildford These spectacular racing events take place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July. The route will start and finish in London and take in around 130 miles of Surrey roads. It will pass through or near the Guildford villages of West Horsley, East Clandon, Gomshall and Ripley.

Sarah’s Law Protecting children is fundamental to our role as parents. We educate our youngsters about the risks we understand such as playing with dangerous objects, road safety etc, but when it comes to protecting them from abuse most parents find themselves in unfamiliar territory. Where we know a person presents a risk to our children we rightly steer clear of them, but if we are unsure about someone who has access to children – perhaps a new partner, or a friend, relative, or neighbour - it has always been difficult to know what to do. To respond to this need, in 2010 the government introduced the Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme. The scheme is often known as Sarah’s Law, after the Surrey schoolgirl Sarah Payne who was murdered in 2000. The scheme allows anyone who has concerns about a person who has access to children, to contact the police and ask whether they have convictions for a child sex offence. The scheme has now been running in Surrey since October 2010 and has been used numerous times to help better protect children in the county. Just one example of this - A Surrey mum was introduced to a friends new partner and immediately got a ‘bad feeling’ about him being around her children. She made an application under the scheme and police were able to disclose to her and her friend that the new partner had convictions for sexually abusing children. Her friend immediately ended the relationship and the children were protected from a potentially harmful situation. If you have concerns about someone who has access to children you can contact Surrey Police via 101 and register your interest. A member of police staff will visit you by appointment to discuss your application, and if it fits the criteria of the scheme they will conduct the necessary checks. If there is something of concern in their background, the police will then consider making a disclosure to the person best able to protect the children – usually their parent(s). Disclosures are made ‘in confidence’ and applicants have to sign an agreement not to misuse the information. BRAIN INJURY HUB
Top Gear star gives his backing
The new website, called the Brain Injury Hub (www.braininjuryhub.co.uk), has been created by The Children’s Trust, Tadworth, the national charity which runs the UK’s largest rehabilitation centre for children with acquired brain injury. Richard Hammond, who is a Vice-President of The Children’s Trust and suffered a serious brain injury himself when he was involved in a car crash whilst filming in 2006, said: “There are thousands of children in the UK living with the long-term effects of an acquired brain injury right now. Their injury will have a major impact on every aspect of their life – their education, relationships with family and friends and their future. The entire family needs robust information and support, but until now that just hasn’t been widely available. The Children’s Trust’s Brain Injury Hub will at last provide these families with the information they need and a forum to share their experiences. I’m proud to give it my backing.” The Brain Injury Hub offers comprehensive information as well as a discussion forum. The content of the site is based on the specialist clinical expertise that has been developed at The Children’s Trust in over 25 years of providing services to children with acquired brain injury. The site features a dedicated section for teachers and other education professionals in recognition of the fact that children with a brain injury can struggle in school, sometimes for years after their original injury. Parents of children with ABI have also shared their stories and made their own suggestions about what should be included. The website has been accredited with the Information Standard, the Department of Health’s quality mark for reliable sources of health information. Thousands of children in the UK have an acquired brain injury. Brain injuries in children are often caused by road accidents or falls, but there are also non-traumatic causes such as a brain tumour, choking or meningitis. Many children are left with severe disabilities as a result of a brain injury, while others can appear to have made a full physical recovery and yet may be left with significant, life-long difficulties with their behaviour, memory or concentration. For this reason, acquired brain injury is often called the ‘hidden disability’. The Children’s Trust campaigns for better recognition of children’s acquired brain injury and to ensure that children and families affected by ABI have access to information, support and specialist services they need.

Are you throwing money away? As food prices continue to rise around the world, it’s a sobering thought to know that UK families waste up to £50 a month throwing away uneaten food.

much, cool your leftovers as soon as possible, store in the fridge and eat within 2 days, or We also know that cutting down on food waste freeze them for another time. You could try to use the leftovers for another meal; take a look can be a challenge, especially when you’re pushed for time or your kids don’t always want at what you already have in your kitchen to help. to eat what you’ve cooked for them. So to help you waste less, Surrey County Council’s Love Food Surrey campaign provides helpful tips on how to save more and waste less, but for the food waste you can’t avoid, you can use your kerbside food waste collection service. By collecting food separately from general waste it can be processed in a more environmentally friendly way and turned into fertiliser for use on farms. Taking just one small step to reduce food waste can have a big positive effect on the environment and save you money too. We hope our tips will inspire you to take that step.

Store food properly Correct storage means your food could live for extra days, weeks or even months. Keep the fridge below 5°C and chilled food will stay fresh for longer.
Use by These dates are for safety
and must be followed correctly; don’t use any food after the end of the ‘use by’ date, even if it looks and smells fine. This is because using it after this date could put your health at risk. To extend the life of food beyond this date, freeze it before the date, defrost when needed and use within 24 hours.
Best before These dates refer to quality not to food safety; foods with a ‘best before’ date should be safe to eat after this date (except for eggs), but they may no longer be at their best.
What a waste
Research indicates that Surrey residents produce about 80,000 tonnes of food waste every year, with treatment and disposal costs in the region of £6.7 million. Just think about all the energy, water and packaging used in food production, transportation and storage that goes to waste when we throw away good food.
