Personally, I didn’t go away anywhere this year as I’ve had too many jobs to do in the house and the garden but I did explore lots of walks in the local area including Talacre beachwhat a lovely place! I’ve lived in this area for 17 years and had never been before. I’ve no idea why not. I’m sure there are many other hidden gems in the area that I need to explore. I’d love to hear where your favourite local place is, why not drop me an email so I can explore further? This month sees the return of the Mold Food Festival. Sadly, I haven’t been sent any information about it so I can’t let you know anything about it. This is such a shame and a missed opportunity. If you are part of any event planning, don’t let your event miss out on inclusion in the only local magazine that is delivered in this area. It’s not to early to start letting me know about any events being planned for between now and Christmas. This could be Halloween events, Craft fairs, Christmas lights switch on, Panto and anything else that is being planned. The sooner I know about them, the more help this magazine can be in making sure as many people as possible know about the event. Hope you have a great month. With its white-sand beaches, stunning mountain scenery and vibrant culture, it’s no wonder Cape Verde is becoming one of the UK’s favourite spots for winter sun. This idyllic archipelago may be known for its winning combination of sun, sea and sand, but with ten islands to explore there’s plenty of room for adventure too. Here are five reasons to consider Cape Verde when planning your next winter break – and what not to miss while you’re there.

The archipelago’s volcanic landscape, mountain scenery and cultural cities make the islands an adventurer’s playground too.

Witness Fogo’s lunar-like landscape or immerse yourself in Santiago’s lush green valleys. If you’re looking for a more cultural experience, you’ll love the island of São Vicente with its buzzing musical scene. The higher winds during November and March make Cape Verde’s beaches a fantastic place to practice watersports too. You could see turtles and whales Cape Verde is home to some of the most important loggerhead turtle nesting sites in the world. On the island of Sal you can visit Project Diversity, a non-profit organisation that protects the turtles’ nesting sites and helps hatchlings make their way to the sea. Visit between July and December for the best chance of witnessing the tiny turtles’ journey. The waters around Boa Vista are also a breeding ground for humpback whales, giving you the chance to book a catamaran tour to see these mighty mammals. Sightings are possible from late February through to May.

Taking its influence from Brazil’s Mardi Gras, the carnival officially lasts a week – but locals will tell you Carnival fever begins at the end of the previous year!

Don’t miss a visit to the island of Santo Antão. A wonderland for hikers, it’s by far the greenest island in the archipelago.

It’s the perfect place to go island-hopping

The festival fever is alive and kicking Winter in Cape Verde brings with it a whole host of festivals and celebrations. Mindelo’s annual Carnival on the island of São Vicente is by far the archipelago’s most famous event. Held each year on Shrove Tuesday, the carnival sees the small Cape Verdean town come alive with live music, colourful costumes and dancing.

With each island offering its own unique flavour, why settle for just one? Imagine starting your holiday on the beach, followed by a couple of days spent drinking in mountain scenery, then the next morning you’re off to hike a volcano. If that sounds exciting, you’ll love an islandhopping holiday around Cape Verde.

The beaches are divine Powder-soft sand washed by turquoise sea, lined with swaying palm trees: the beaches in Cape Verde are paradise. Sal, the archipelago’s most popular island, is home to the gorgeous Santa Maria beach, where bustling bars, shops and restaurants offer a welcome break from the midday sun. Fancy a little more peace and quiet? On the island of Boa Vista, you’ll find unspoilt stretches of sand with barely a soul in sight to share them with. There are adventures to be had

A new splashback

4 Overhaul window treatments

Glamorous hardware Cupboard handles, knobs and pulls are easy to replace, and there is an enormous range of shapes, styles and materials available. Measure for handles carefully so that new ones can be bolted through the same holes.

2 Assess seating In a kitchen-diner or an island kitchen with bar stools, the style of seating is important, so think about an overhaul. Buy new, consider antique or vintage options, or consider repainting or reupholstering your current pieces.

Sort out storage Start with a clear-out, and if you need extra shelves inside cupboards, now is the time to add them, with internal organisers to keep everything tidy. Where space is short and items have to be on display, use efficient racks, rails and wall grids, adding baskets, jars and boxes that coordinate with each other and the room as a whole.

1 Update lighting

3 Floor story

9

A made-to-measure roller blind is an inexpensive kitchen update with a major impact. A more expensive option would be New England-style shutters, which add thermal and acoustic insulation, too.

6

Create a new look for the heart of your home with these inspiring ideas.

A coat of hardwearing, wipeable paint on the walls gives a quick and easy new look. Cabinets can be repainted too. Remove the doors and all the hardware, sand thoroughly and prime. A satin top coat avoids highlighting fingerprints and minor brushstroke imperfections.

5 Taps matter

7

Retiling a splashback area behind the sink is usually straightforward, and can provide a gorgeous focal point. The messy bit is removing the old tiles and repairing the surface behind. If saving money is key, plain, rectangular tiles can look super-smart laid upright and aligned, especially with coloured grout for a graphic, modern look.

Changing a kitchen tap is a simple upgrade that gives the room a new lease of life. Finishes include chrome, stainless steel, brass, nickel, copper, gold or black, or how about a pull-out spray, water filter or a boiling-water tap? These smart, neutral tiles have been grouted to match the cabinets beneath. Marylebone Gloss Ivory Flat Metro Tiles, £19.95 per square metre, wallsandfloors.co.uk. A custom-made blind will fit your window perfectly without breaking the bank. Regalis silver-patterned roller blinds, £57.71 for a 120x120cm window, englishblinds.co.uk.

Fresh paint

A new shade can work wonders to update kitchen lighting, while replacing a whole fitting is not usually costly, provided wiring already exists. Choose bulbs for the right colour temperature – cool, bright white over working areas, with a warmer glow for relaxed eating. A dimmer is always a good idea.

Replacing a cheap vinyl floor covering with beautiful stone or ceramic floor tiles will transform a kitchen, and it may be possible to add underfloor heating at the same time. Alternatively, hide an unattractive floor with a large rug –braided rugs look pretty or there are lots of modern outdoor rugs that can withstand spills.

Artwork and accessories Hang beautiful paintings, prints or photographs in orderly lines or balanced groups on your kitchen walls. Add accessories that coordinate with the style of your scheme, and perhaps some house plants and/or fresh flowers.

3 Hit the supermarket Aldi, in particular, has gained a bit of a cult following for its health and beauty products, some of which are (cough) remarkably similar to those made by top brands. While beauty dupes won’t be exactly the same as the ones they’re inspired by, they may well be close enough that you’ll hardly notice the switch. And considering the saving, it’s well worth giving them a try. Start with Aldi’s Lacura Original Hot Cloth Cleanser (£2.99) and Naturals Eye Palette (£5.99), and Lidl’s Cien Q10 Night Cream (£1.49).

1 Be fickle

4 Think big Generally, bigger sizes cost less per millilitre than smaller ones. So, buy the biggest size you can afford of products that have a decent shelf life, like body wash, perfume, shampoo and most hairstyling products. That said….

6 Sell and swap Signed up for a beauty subscription and now have a drawer full of unused products? Why not swap them for products you do want? There are several Facebook groups designed to help you do just that.

8 Talk to your stylist

5 Think small We’re often lured into buying promotional sets, palettes and packages that promise a big saving on the RRP. However, it’s only worth buying them if you’re going to use everything. For example, three individual eye shadows may work out better value than a palette half-full of shades that you’ll barely touch.

Is your hair high maintenance? Talk to your hairdresser about how to extend the time between appointments. They might suggest swapping from foil highlights to balayage for example, or moving a shade or two closer to your natural colour.

7 Go back to basics Of course brands want you to layer your skincare products. They’ll make more money if they can sell you a moisturiser, SPF cream, serum, moisturiser, primer, BB cream etc., etc., etc. Instead, look for multitasking products that are packed with active ingredients, such as a tinted moisturiser with SPF.

We often stick religiously to brands we know and trust, but we shouldn’t be afraid to experiment. Head to TK Maxx and other discount stores to see what’s on offer. You may well find a new favourite shampoo or body cream at a fraction of the price you’ve been paying for your current brand. Which brings us to…

Brands usually offer a discount for subscribing to their newsletter. And newsletters often give you early access to sales. To stop your inbox getting clogged, set up an email address just for newsletters. Only check it when you know you’re running low on products, so you don’t get sucked into buying things you don’t need.

With their bristly bodies and snuffling snouts, hedgehogs are one of the nation’s favourite garden visitors. Yet despite pleas for urban and rural gardeners to take better care of these cute animals, hedgehog numbers continue to decline at an alarming rate.

Protection A vital feature for hedgehogs in your garden is long grass, where they might hide away and feel safe from the gaze of predators. This grass and surrounding plants will encourage a mass of snails and slugs which, as above, are a hedgehog delicacy! For more information on how you can help hedgehogs, www.britishhedgehogs.org.ukvisit:or www.hedgehogstreet.org

Create hedgehog highways

For anyone who’s ever chanced upon these little wonders, the plight of the hedgehog - in the last decade numbers have fallen by 30% - will feel like a real shame. After all, they are charming, nervous and largely harmless animals. However, there are some things you can do to help our hog friends survive their current plight. Hog heaven Create a nesting place for any expected hedgehogs by curating log and leaf piles, plus wilderness areas. In addition, buy a purpose-built hedgehog home to provide a safe haven. Fallen leaves also offer perfect nesting material, so make sure to leave some when you next clear your garden.

Looking after hedgehog health

Put away the pellets There is no need for slug pellets when you have a thriving hedgehog population, as these hungry little hogs can hoover up over 100 snails, slugs and worms every night!

While hedgehogs are excellent at finding their own food, a helping hand in a time of need goes a long way. Of course, if you see a really poorly hedgehog who appears to be in need of treatment, medical your first step should be contactto your local advice.centrerescuefor

Some cards don’t pay cash but rather give you points that you can turn into money-off vouchers at specific retailers. These are only worthwhile if you would have been buying from those retailers anyway. Bank accounts Another option is to get a bank account that offers some form of cashback, often called a reward account. Unlike with credit cards, these sometimes only offer cashback for specific spending such as bills, and it may be a flat amount rather than a percentage.

There’s often a small monthly fee, but if you are paying regular bills you can usually be certain of coming out ahead. Check the conditions carefully though: some rewards accounts have a minimum amount that you must pay in each month, usually designed to make sure you use it as your main bank account.

To advertise your business in Connection Magazines - call 01824 70701326

The key rule for using such cards is that you should only use them for purchases that you would have made anyway, and not for any other reason. Don’t buy stuff just to boost your cashback. Similarly, don’t buy anything you can’t afford right away, but if you were buying it anyway – food shopping, car fuel, clothes – this is a good way of recouping a little bit of your spending.

Credit card This will give you a percentage of your spending back as money. Depending on the setup, you may get a fixed percentage on all spending, a percentage that depends how much you spend, or a varying percentage that depends exactly what you are spending on. You need to take into account any monthly fees and be sure these won’t wipe out the benefits.

Inflation continues to rise, and with it the gap between your outgoings and income shrinks. You can’t completely stop spending, but you can earn cash back when you spend. There’s a range of ways to do this, but you need to check the conditions carefully.

The interest rates on cashback credit cards (rather than debit cards) are often quite high, so make sure you pay the balance off in full every month, preferably by direct debit. And don’t get cash advances such as bank machine withdrawals as, again, the rates can be high.

Remember to check prices carefully and see if you could get it cheaper elsewhere, outweighing the rewards. Often such programs work by the retailer paying a commission fee to the cashback provider, so the retailer won’t always have an incentive to offer you their best price.

Blinds & Curtains

Often such services are free or have a free tier, but they can have monthly fees that may come as a surprise and reduce the overall benefits.

Be particularly wary of any membership costs.

Apps and online

The newest option is to use specialist apps and online sites. These aren’t operated by banks or credit card providers, but rather independent businesses. In principle, all you need to do is visit the site or app before being passed on to the retailer and you’ll then get a percentage of any spending as cashback. While such programs can be simple to use, you do need to be particularly careful you understand how a particular service works. Make sure you understand how the cashback is paid: sometimes it’s a straight transfer to your bank account, but sometimes it’s a gift card.

You should also do your research before installing any apps, software or tools such as web browser extensions and plugins. Many services are perfectly legitimate, but always be sceptical if you can’t find independent sources vouching for them. Loyalty cards

Finally, don’t forget about supermarket loyalty cards. They don’t pay cash, but do offer discounts on future shops. These days, the best value often comes from taking advantage of tie-ups with other retailers and programs, though this does mean doing some research and keeping up to date with the latest policies. For example, earlier this year anyone using the option to convert Sainsbury’s Nectar card points to Avios air miles effectively boosted their cashback by 25 per cent – though of course, that’s only worthwhile for people who planned to spend their air miles. Remember also that how much financial benefit you get from air miles can vary depending on the type of flight you book. sceptical if you can’t find independent sources

Marco Pierre White’s Chicken Chasseur

• Either 1 small chicken, cut into 8 pieces, or 8 chicken thighs, or 8 chicken breast fillets (skin on or off as preferred)

• 3 tbsp tarragon, chopped • 2 tbsp parsley, chopped • 2 tomatoes, skinned, deseeded and finely diced

• 50ml (3 ½ tbsp) brandy, optional • 100ml (7 tbsp) white wine

The fearsome yet fantastically flamboyant Marco Pierre White relays his splendid Chicken Chasseur recipe.

• 2 shallots, very finely chopped (100g or 3.5 oz)

• 1 chicken stock pot • 600ml (2 1/2 cups) tomato juice (with an optional touch of gravy browning added in for extra colour if desired)

Next, acidity.add the chicken stock pot and the tomato juice (with gravy browning if using). Shake the pan to gently work it in and turn the chicken pieces until fully coated in the liquid. Bring slowly to the boil to allow the chicken stock pot to dissolve, then add the tarragon and simmer for 5 minutes.

Introduction

3. If you are using brandy, pour it in around the edge of the pan so that it runs underneath the chicken. Cook for 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate. Add the wine in the same way, pouring it in around the sides of the pan, and cook for a further 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate and reduce the

5. Next, add in the parsley and diced tomato, shaking the pan to mix everything in well. Spoon the mushrooms, parsley and tomato over the chicken and garnish with sprigs of parsley, then serve.

• 250g (9oz) button mushrooms, finely sliced

Ingredients (serves 4) • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp plain flour, for coating

1. Gently heat half of the oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan. The oil should be hot, but not so hot that it scorches the floured chicken. Next, spread a layer of flour on a plate or a tray, and coat the chicken pieces evenly and thoroughly, shaking off any excess flour. He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. is month, Alan Titchmarsh discusses pu ing early preparations in place for the cold season. So then, winter is coming! Okay, so it’s a way o yet, but ge ing our plans together early for what we want to see in our gardens in winter, is actually a really good idea, even if the whole discussion feels a li le, well, ‘out of season’, you might say!e notion of the winter vegetable is one we all stand by – rough, rustic, wholesome and happy, they are the meal mainstays of a season in which we want to be inside, wrapped up warm, with the products of our labour in front of us. ink about kale, brussels sprouts, parsnips, and who can resist the Jerusalem artichoke? ese are all easy to get into the group, simple to maintain, and will flourish as the year goes on, ready for picking just when the temperatures begin to drop sharply in November.

To advertise your business in Connection Magazines - call 01824 707013 and require slightly longer in the ground, so planting now will mean they won’t be ready until next summer. All of this proves that while many of us believe the end of the summer will gradually see our gardens lose their colourful, bountiful appeal, there is still plenty of work to do, and plenty of our outside spaces still to be enjoyed.

You’ve also got leeks, something that are a must on a winter plot – they o er volume, flavour and spiciness right up until the soil freezes solid – and winter salads… rows of Lambs Le uce, Land Cress and mustard will need some protection from the elements, but once in the ground are resilient and happy to be picked across the colder months, where they’ll regrow and keep the supply to your lunch table constant. And you can never ignore hardy, tough and tasty onions (and shallots). ey are easy to plant, brilliantly versatile, and incredibly resourceful in the soil. Onions have an incredibly long growing season too

TheGreenfingers…AlanTitchmarshColumn

You also need to start thinking about early spring vegetables –they’ll be longer in the ground but still working their magic through the winter months. In this case, definitely consider spinach, typically planted at the start of autumn, and carrots too. We associate carrots with sugary, summer flavours, but planted in November and with a bit of protection, the Adelaide carrot flourishes across the colder months for an early-spring treat.

There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile broadbandTelecommunications, phone.andconnected

industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumer-led price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile phone contracts. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money. It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same Anotherline.trick is to check to see if you’re paying for data you don’t use. What’s it like inside?

The Ford Fiesta is still the most common sight on UK roads and is a huge seller for Ford. It’s small yet practical and great value for money. With tweaked styling and improved technology, we’ve tested the latest version to see if it’s still one of the best all-rounders.

The new LED headlights give a more modern appearance, while the rear lights have a classy new black surround. Each trim level now has a more distinctive appearance. Our sporty ST-Line model gets a new upper grille with a deeper insert and glossblack honeycomb finish, plus wide side vents.

The Fiesta is pretty spacious, though the driving position can be slightly awkward for taller drivers. Materials quality is impressive. The technology is decent for a car of this size, especially the new 12.3-inch digital instrument display. The infotainment system’s screen feels a little dated, however.

Our ST-Line Vignale costs £25,270, with features including 18-inch alloy wheels, ST-Line body kit, selectable drive modes, Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment technology with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats and steering wheel, and various driver-assistance features. Total price was £27,970 after optional extras, including Matrix LED headlights (£850) and B&O premium sound system (£425). The parking pack is good value at £300.

What’s new?

One of the Fiesta’s key selling points is its range of electrified engines and there are hybrid and mild-hybrid petrol powertrains available. Our test car had the 1.0-litre mild hybrid with 123bhp and 170Nm of torque, promising 50mpg on the combined cycle. It felt punchy enough but would work better with manual transmission, as the seven-speed automatic on our car felt lethargic in urban driving. What’s it like to drive? Aside from the gearbox, the Fiesta is fantastic to drive. Our ST-Line Vignale specification test car included ‘sports-tuned suspension’ but this generally delivered a comfortable ride on all but the most potholed roads. The steering is light and easy to use around town without being too fidgety at higher speeds. The Fiesta is a bit noisy on the motorway but is otherwise well-refined. How does it look? Subtle changes to the Fiesta’s classic shape give it a simpler, more sophisticated edge. A new bonnet shape increases nose height and the upper grille is larger.

What’s the spec like?

advertise

An obvious change is the tweaked exterior design, and there are also new technologies such as Matrix LED headlights and a configurable digital instrument display. What’s under the bonnet?

To your business in Connection Magazines - call 01824 70701340 Darren Cassey tests the updated Ford Fiesta to see if it’s as good as ever. What is it?

Although all this equipment makes the Fiesta more appealing, it does impact value for money when you consider the basic model starts at around £18,000.

Facts at a glance Model: Ford Fiesta Starting price: £17,905 Model as tested: Ford Fiesta ST-Line Vignale Price: Engine:£27,9701.0-litre mild hybrid Power: 123bhp Torque: 170Nm Max speed: 124mph 0-60mph: 9.4 seconds MPG: Emissions:50.4 126g/km CO2

Verdict There’s still a lot to love about this smart supermini. It’s sweet to drive and comes with impressive equipment and technology. If you’re sensible with your specifications, it’s easy to get a smart supermini with everything you need for a small family.

1. Adapting exercise Your buddy may not be able to embark on the long walks they used to, so try to adapt the strolls so that the distance is sensible, the terrain is kind on ageing paws, and the excursions are perhaps shorter, but more regular – so three casual outings a day rather than one long slog.

3. Diet Buying food relative to the dog’s age is vital, as is factoring in the idea that your pet may prefer to eat lying down if being on their feet for too long is painful. Beware though, eating in a flat position can lead to digestive issues, so try to split food into several portions throughout the day. And of course, ensure he or she drinks plenty.

4. Grooming The feeling of contact and kinaesthesia is something every dog likes, and by putting in place a regular grooming routine, not only can you achieve this, but it will also afford you time to check for lumps, bumps, inspect bites or patchy areas on your dog. Effectively, you’re offering a health check and a massage in one!

2. Social contact While our older friends have enjoyed all that pampering in their youth, the veteran pooches are more ignored, so it’s important to reach out and connect with them. Sure, you might not get the same bountiful response, but typically older dogs live with older owners in quieter communities, so interacting with them when out is a great way to keep them connected.
