In a recent conversation with one of my advertisers, he was telling me how is really busy at the moment and added “It’s never just one job, is it?”

He then explained what he meant. You see, this is the life of anyone quoting for all but the simplest work in your home. What the householder thinks they are asking for is a job which is straightforward and will only take a couple of days; what the trades-person knows they’ll get is ‘while you are there’, could you... and ‘I’ve changed my mind’. Before planning any work, have a good think about what you want and discus it with anyone else involved in the decision making. The reason you are given an estimate is because they don’t know what else you’ll ask of them along the way, and the cheapest quote which appears to be a bargain might have every extra and amendment or change of plan charged for, so do qualify that before you go ahead. A tip for you. Inflation means prices are going up. The longer you leave it to make that call, the more it’ll cost you, so if you are planning on getting any work done, the sooner you call the local companies the better it will be for you. See you next month Trevor To keep up with local what’s on, why not pop along to our Facebook page Facebook.com/ConnectionMags and like us Or you could follow us on Twitter. @Connection_Mags

Our feet are our first point of contact with the world, and yet too often we cram them into ill-fitting shoes and leave them until last when it comes to self-care. From athlete’s foot to ingrown toenails, there are a variety of issues that can crop up as a result of poor foot care. So, what can you do to – literally – put your best foot forward, and how can you resolve any issues should they arise? Prevention is better than cure, so the best place to start is with your choice of shoe. A good pair of shoes should support and protect your feet, and allow natural movement when walking. Look for breathable fabrics, roomy toe-boxes, cushioned soles and low heels. Although wearing high heels once in a while won’t do much harm, long-term use has been linked to ingrown toenails and even arthritis. Once you’re wearing the right shoes, keeping your feet in good condition should be fairly straightforward. Applying a moisturiser or foot cream daily will help prevent cracking, and using a pumice stone or foot file will tackle any hard skin that often appears around the heels. It’s also important to check your feet regularly for cuts, sores, redness or swelling – especially if you’re diabetic. This is because raised blood sugar levels can often lead to a reduction in blood supply to your feet, which means that cuts and sores may take a while to heal.

Athlete’s foot is another common foot problem, caused by walking barefoot in communal spaces such as gyms, showers or swimming pools. This fungal infection usually starts between the toes, causes significant discomfort, itching and pain, and can even spread beyond the feet if not treated. Over-the-counter fungal creams are the best solution, but it’s also important to keep your feet clean and dry in-between treatments. Some foot ailments can be slightly more bothersome, however. Ledderhose disease is a rare condition that causes connective tissue to build up and create hard lumps on the soles of the feet. The growths aren’t cancerous but they can cause pain, especially when walking. Home remedies include wearing soft shoe inserts, stretching, massages and anti-inflammatory drugs, but doctors might also recommend surgery in more serious cases. Although chiropody becomes more important as we age, taking good care of our feet also gets harder as we lose flexibility. If you’re experiencing any aches, pains or symptoms in your feet, visit your local chiropodist who will be able to help diagnose any issues and advise next steps.

When it comes to foot care, toenail trimming is key. The trick here is little and often. Experts recommend trimming your nails every six to eight weeks, cutting them straight across using clean, sharp clippers. The best time is when you’re just out of the bath, but be careful not to cut them too short. Ingrown toenails are often the result of over-trimming, and besides being extremely painful, in extreme cases, may need an operation to resolve.

It sometimes feels like you need a science degree to decode skincare ingredients lists. So we thought it was time to explain some of the most common active ingredients and why you might want them. Hyaluronic acid

CBD (cannabidiol)

Hyaluronic acid helps skin to lock in moisture. By doing so, it makes skin plumper and softer, and smooths out wrinkles. If your skin feels dry, dehydrated or tight, you’d likely benefit from adding hyaluronic acid to your daily skincare routine. Don’t be put off by the name – hyaluronic acid won’t burn or irritate your skin.

CBD is extracted from hemp. It calms and balances the skin, reducing inflammation, redness and acne. It’s also an antioxidant, so helps to protect your skin from environmental damage.

Niacinamide Niacinamide is a type of vitamin B3. It’s a real multi-tasker – keeping skin hydrated, improving texture and reducing redness, irritation and dark spots. It also helps to protect your skin and boost cell renewal. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) There are several types of AHAs, the most common being glycolic acid and lactic acid. They’re mainly used to exfoliate skin – removing dead cells to reveal brighter, smoother skin. Be warned though, AHAs can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so always wear sunscreen, even on cold and cloudy days. If your skin is particularly sensitive, you might want to stick to lactic acid, which is less likely to cause irritation.

Retinol A form of vitamin A, retinol boosts cell renewal to make skin look brighter and fresher. It can reduce fine lines, scarring and sun damage. On the downside, it can cause dryness and irritation, so you’ll want to start off with a low concentration and work your way up. You’ll also need to combine it with a decent moisturiser and SPF. Vitamin C While vitamin C can’t replace sunscreen, it does helps to protect your skin from UV rays, pollution and other environmental factors. It also helps skin to heal, reduces dark patches and makes skin more radiant. Peptides Peptides are a type of amino acid. They boost collagen and elastin so can make your skin look firmer and plumper.

Looking for a great all-rounder? Try Olay’s new Vitamin C + AHA24 range. It combines Vitamin C, niacinamide and lactic acid to brighten and soften skin, increase hydration and reduce uneven pigmentation. The serum and moisturiser cost £34.99 each from www.boots.com and have been gathering rave reviews since they were launched earlier this year.

Bad Habit’s Repair Mode AHA/BHA Active Night Serum (£20, uk.morphe.com) gently exfoliates your skin while you sleep. Along with several different types of AHA and BHA (beta hydroxy acid), it contains magnesium and various plant extracts to soothe, brighten and hydrate your skin.

The Queen’s Jubilee: Platinum Pomp The work that goes on behind the scenes to mark Jubilee celebrations. Beginning on Thursday, June 2nd and stretching across a weekend of celebrations, Queen Elizabeth II, family, friends and the nation will look back over seven decades of exemplary rule. With meticulous preparation required, here are some of the events that have been months, and in some cases years, in the planning. Soldiers, horses and musicians It all starts to come to fruition on the Thursday, as Trooping the Colour marks the Queen’s birthday celebrations. Over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians will come together in the traditional Parade. This is the first Jubilee celebration in which women will be included in the regiment, so additional preparations have been made to ensure the influx of first-time participants. The Parade features some of

20

the 500 horses who, in May, participated in a private ceremony at Windsor Castle, with the parade moving down The Mall to Horse Guard’s Parade, where members of the Royal Family join on horseback and in carriages. RAF fly-past The traditional RAF fly-past completes the parade. The routine will have been practised countless times, though contrary to popular belief, this isn’t just a privilege reserved for the Queen. In the lead-up to the event, local communities have been invited to apply for their own fly-pasts. Jubilee beacons A fortnight before the Jubilee, 1,500 Platinum Jubilee beacons will have been distributed across the UK. This lighting of beacons first took place in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and this beacon chain, once used as a tool for communication, has now become a symbol of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents. They provide the central

point of focus for any outdoor gathering or celebration, and feature Community beacons, Commonwealth beacons (54 for all the capital cities of the Commonwealth) and a Principal Beacon to be lit at Buckingham Palace. St Paul’s Cathedral On Friday, June 3rd, attention switches to the Thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral. Public safety elements come to the fore here, with tens of thousands of well-wishers lining the streets around the Thames as the Queen and family members attend. The Derby A day of leisure follows on the Saturday as the Queen visits The Derby at Epsom Downs. The event itself is over 240 years old and has garnered a different winner every year, and is open only to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies who have qualified for the race in the months preceding it. It remains the race that offers the biggest prize pot in the British racing – over £1.1million.

10,000 charitable tickets In the evening, Elizabeth returns to London for a party at Buckingham Palace. In the months leading up to the event, over 10,000 tickets have been made available to charitable organisations. With state-of-the-art technology and a stunning stage design, the event will feature an incredible range of highlights from global music stars with a full, live orchestra, and actors from film, TV and the stage telling the story and celebrating some of the most significant cultural moments from The Queen’s seven-decade reign. This particular element has been two years in the planning. Street celebrations Finally, on Sunday, June 5th, communities across the UK are invited play out their own Platinum Jubilee street celebrations. Named The Big Lunch and launched in 2009, communities have been planning for months how they wish to mark the special day, with over 1,500 applications made. 200 silk scarfs At the same time, the Platinum Jubilee Pageant sees artistic performers, dancers, musicians,

military personnel, key workers and volunteers tell the story of the Queen’s 70-year reign in an awe-inspiring festival of creativity. This significant event has been configured over the past 18 months and includes a ‘River of Hope’ section comprised of 200 silk flags made by primary and secondary school children with a theme of climate change and incorporated messages for the future.

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about immersing ourselves in the great outdoors this summer.

trimming. In reality, it doesn’t matter. Of course I want our gardens to be at their most beautiful as regularly as they can, but these spaces are as much about what they give us, as they are what we give them.

Get out! Get out! Get out! Yes, you – I’m telling you to get up, put your shoes on, open the door and immerse yourself in what a wonderful country and wonderful landscape this is. Even after my 70-plus years here, I am proud and passionate and loyal to the UK, and I could never live anywhere else; and while those emotions hold firm all year round, in my mind there is never a better time to soak up the majesty of nature than now, with the sun out, the days growing longer, and nature unequivocally at her most resplendent. When I suggest getting outdoors in this way – and I suggest it a lot! – on some occasions I get the answer back that the person isn’t into nature, or doesn’t know where to start when it comes to pruning or

So while our own lawns and beds and trellises are often a priority, in these early days of summer I would encourage you to take the opportunity to sample those of others… in the wild, at a country house, even at a neighbour’s. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so get out there, get imitating, and get inspired. And by the way, take your kids… every time. Get them off their consoles, prise them away from social media – it’s really good for them to see this whole other side of things. It’s funny, the three big things government are always ranting on about are law and order, health, and education. That’s fair enough. And yet, time outdoors, time gardening, gives us all of them. If you’re letting off steam, you’re less likely to use your anger in a place where it wouldn’t be suitable.

the education element. And the health part is obvious - fresh air, exercise, open spaces gardens, parks, woodland, moorland. I know it sounds terribly tribe, but I do think if some of these world leaders just went out and pottered about in their garden for an hour every Saturday letting off steam, the world just might be a better place! So, please… get out!

If you’re out there, you’re learning about how things grow, so that’s

Ingredients (serves 4) • Four onions, cut in half and thinly sliced into half moons • The juice of five lemons • 4tbsp olive oil • 1tsp ground turmeric • 400g (14oz) Greek yogurt • 3tbsp crushed sea salt • A generous pinch of saffron threads

Sabrina Ghayour’s Saffron & Lemon Chicken Joojeh Kabab Introduction

I became the family cook at 11 years old, because my mum and grandmother couldn’t cook for toffee! My food style now is best summed up as ‘lazy’. I work stupid hours, but I always like to eat simple dishes that aren’t labour intensive. I love whacking things together and coming up with interesting food – the less you treat good ingredients, the more natural they taste. I’m all about need and speed, and a lot of my recipes are born out of me just chucking stuff together. That’s really how I learned to cook, and my Saffron & Lemon Chicken Joojeh Kabab is perhaps one of the best examples of this I can give. This probably features on the menu of every Persian restaurant in the world, and for me what really makes it special is the way in which the chicken is marinated in yogurt and lemon juice, which breaks down the fibres and tenderises the meat beautifully. The addition of saffron and onions creates the signature flavour that makes this a much-loved dish. This is my simplified version of the recipe, which can be made at home in a conventional oven if, like me, you don’t have a barbecue or flame grill.

Method

1. Put the onions, lemon juice, olive oil, turmeric, yogurt and sea salt into a large mixing bowl and mix well. Using a pestle and mortar, grind the

30

saffron to a powder, then pour over the boiling water and leave to infuse for 5–10 minutes. 2. Add the chicken to the mixing

• 3tbsp boiling water • Six large boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 5cm (2in) pieces bowl. Mix well to evenly coat the chicken pieces in the yogurt, then add the saffron water to the bowl and mix thoroughly. 3. Cover the bowl with clingfilm and leave the chicken in the refrigerator to marinate for a minimum of an hour or preferably overnight. Once the chicken has been marinated, preheat the oven or grill to the highest setting possible. Line a large baking sheet with nonstick baking paper. 4. Remove each piece of chicken from the marinade using a slotted spoon. Lay out all the pieces of chicken on the prepared baking sheet and bake or grill for 18–20 minutes maximum, or until the pieces have slightly charred edges but remain beautifully moist on the insides. Serve with flour tortilla wraps or basmati rice with a little salad and some yogurt.

Summer tiiime, and the living is eeeeasy…. Whether you’re looking for some barbecue inspiration or just a new novel to keep you company on the hammock, we’ve got you covered. Tom Kerridge’s Outdoor Cooking – Tom Kerridge From Umami Mushroom & Halloumi Burgers to Shawarma Chicken Wraps, Tom Kerridge’s recipes will lift your barbecuing endeavours to the next level. Don’t panic, none of them will keep you tied to the kitchen while your friends are enjoying themselves with a beer in the garden. They may well nudge you into barbecuing daily well into autumn though. One Italian Summer – Rebecca Serle Reeling from the death of her mother, Katy heads to Italy on what was supposed to be a long-awaited mother-and-daughter trip. While there, she meets the 30-year-old version of her mother – almost unrecognisable from the woman Katy’s known all her life. As the two women become friends against the vivid backdrop of the Amalfi Coast, Katy works through her grief and discovers a lot more about herself in the process. The Modern Gardener – Frances Tophill – published by Kyle Books If spending time outdoors has got you itching to make some changes to your garden, this book is a good place to look for inspiration. As the subtitle explains, it’s intended as ‘a practical guide to gardening creatively, productively and sustainably’. You’ll find bags of information on everything from designing your garden, choosing plants and addressing common challenges to using your garden plants to make drinks, natural dyes and more. Five Minute Mum: On the Go – Daisy Upton Summer holidays are just around the corner. If you’re already wondering how you’re going to keep the kids out of your hair, this book might help. The focus is on easy-to-set-up activities to do outside the house, from games for the train to craft challenges for family gatherings. There’s even a page of ideas for making the most of sugar sachets and serviettes at service stations. Feel Better In 5: Your Daily Plan to Feel Great for Life – Rangan Chatterjee Many of us go on a health kick at the start of the summer. We aim for major changes, struggle to stick to them and then beat ourselves up (and reach for another biscuit). Rangan Chatterjee’s plan is decidedly easier to stick to. Five-minute practices, three times a day. One for your heart. One for your body. And one for your mind. He also gives top tips for creating better habits and getting to the root of what’s holding you back. Twelve Secrets – Robert Gold Fed up of ‘churn them out’ crime series? Looking for a fast-paced, intelligent thriller with twists and turns aplenty? Take a chance on Robert Gold’s debut – Twelve Secrets. The main character, Ben Harper, is an investigative journalist pushed into taking a fresh look at a crime he really doesn’t want to explore – the murder of his brother ten years before. It seems that in Ben’s tight-knit community, everyone has something to hide. Gripping.

We appreciate our outside spaces much more these days and treat them as extensions of our living areas, with lighting, soft furnishings and furniture that suits the way we live. Recent changes in design and technology have brought about great improvements in outdoor furniture quality, making it comfortable to use, goodlooking and long-lasting, with plenty of choice. When picking out new garden furniture, will it be for meals, socialising or relaxing in the sun? How many people is it for and do they have any special requirements? This will help decide what furniture you need, whether a dining set for six or more, a bar set, a small bistro set for two, a sofa and armchairs, or a hammock, swing seat or set of loungers. Larger gardens may have several furniture groupings, with seating placed where there are beautiful views. In a small garden, corner and L-shaped sofas, slim benches and foldaway chairs help make the most of the space, or consider a set where the table can be raised for dining, then lowered to act as a coffee table. A classic foldable dining set in walnutcoloured timber that is practical, goodlooking and affordable. Copenhagen four-seat dining set, £599, dobbies.com.

Dining set in powder-coated aluminium. Zuiver Vondel small garden table, £849; small garden bench, £439; and pair of garden armchairs, £518; all cuckooland.com.

Where the furniture will be placed determines the largest sizes you can opt for. You need level ground, near the house, with enough space for the furniture, to pull chairs in and out and to walk around the set-up. Pay attention to the sun’s movement, avoiding particularly exposed areas, and consider whether furniture must be heavy enough not to get blown away or light enough to be easily moved. Scale is important, too – in a small space, chunky pieces may look out of place, while slender furniture can be ‘lost’ in a large garden. For a good proportion of the year your garden furniture won’t be used, but will be visible from the house. Does it look good from all angles? Will it need a cover? Some elements will need winter storage, so ensure there is space available. You may opt for a traditional look, something modern, or a timeless style somewhere inbetween. The natural colours of rattan and timber, in classic, elegantly rounded shapes, work beautifully with country gardens and older properties, while brighter colours and minimal, angular shapes look great with modern properties and urban courtyards. Garden furniture can be a major investment, so research the alternatives online and in person, considering materials, durability, aftercare and any guarantees. Choose pieces that reflect both the interior of the house and your personality – and you will enjoy them immensely for many years to come.

What to Consider When Buying a New or Used Car Our 5 top tips to read up on before you part with your cash Buying a new, nearly new or used car is a complicated process, involving not just decisions about the make and model but also considerations like budgets, financing, running costs and insurance. Throw in the increasing popularity of ecofriendly vehicles and your next car hunt could turn into a real head-scratcher.

running costs such as insurance, annual road tax, servicing, maintenance, MOTs and the car’s fuel consumption. The RAC has a handy online mileage calculator (rac.co.uk/route-planner/mileagecalculator/).

Make sure you know how much you can afford to spend, whether that‘s buying outright, via finance or part-exchange. If you’re trading in an old car, look up its tradein value first e.g. via Autotrader (autotrader.co.uk/cars/valuation).

• If you buy at an auction, you don’t have the same rights if the cars are “sold as seen”. Check the auction’s conditions of sale before you buy. These conditions must be displayed prominently at the auction or in the catalogue • If you buy online from a dealer, you have the same rights as you would if you walked into the dealership and bought face to face

Here are our top tips for what to think about when buying your next car Work out your budget – and stick to it

and fit for any stated purpose

Always ALWAYS do a test drive No matter how much you believe you’ve found the right car, a test drive is an important part of thoroughly testing a vehicle and making sure you really want to buy the car. You’re spending a lot of money on it, so you should do the most you can to ensure that you feel comfortable and enjoy driving it. And remember a test drive is not a commitment to buy. Know your rights Here’s what the law says about buying a car:

• If you buy privately, it’s a case of “buyer beware” - it’s up to you to ask the right questions and inspect the car thoroughly before you buy Take your time Whilst it might be exciting to get out on the road in your new car, it’s important that you don’t rush. Ideally you’ll be driving this car for a few years, so you’ll want to make sure you won’t have any major regrets further down the line. If you’re not entirely sure what you should be looking for, take a family member or trusted friend around with you when you go to look at new or used cars. A second opinion can help you make up your mind.

• When you buy a car from a garage dealer or trader, your consumer rights are protected About the Author: Helen Say in law. The car must be as is a freelance copywriter and If you have a particular make described, of satisfactory quality www.cblservices.co.uk and model researchyour the business 42 in mind, To advertise in Connection Magazines - blogger call 01824 707013 Work out the running costs

Autumn Getaways .

Planning your next great escape? Try these places this autumn

Europe AMSTERDAM Forget the tulip season, an autumn escape to Amsterdam offers the best of all worlds. The swarms of heavy people traffic from the summer – and with it, a multitude of stag and hen dos – have subsided, and as well as a more palatable clientele, the wondrous Dutch city falls into a sultry, rich, orange and brown autumn bounty, with tree-lined waterways absolutely dazzling as a backdrop to arts, culture, architecture and some great hospitality. ROME Notoriously busy during July and August, the Italian capital regains its resplendent simplicity as the autumn months come about. A drop in tourist numbers means you can fully appreciate Rome’s stunning architecture, take your time over pizza or pasta, and explore winding backstreets without the accompaniment of trudging tourists. BERLIN Commonly regarded now as one of the coolest and most progressive cities in Europe, Berlin’s charm is multi-faceted. Its people are friendly, open-

minded, and the city has emerged as a cultural and historical story of its own. Autumn in Berlin brings about the second wave of festivals, not least the much-vaunted jazz showcase which kicks off at the start of November. CYPRUS If sun and sand is still your thing, then Cyprus will hold its sizzling summer feel more than most other European destinations. Even in the echoes of autumn, temperatures remain in the high twenties, and with eclectic coastline, charming Mediterranean villages and a combination of vineyards and mountains, there are a variety of terrains and colours to ensure you stay charmed by your surroundings. COPENHAGEN When autumn comes around in Copenhagen, the foliage, fallen conkers, elegant treelined cobbled routes and cosy cafés take on their own special meaning. And for a nation so driven by the magic of a long leadup to Christmas, there is a

rustic festival feel ready to be explored throughout October and November that is as friendly as it is unique. Beyond Europe AFRICAN SAFARIS For the perfect African safari, an autumn break is perfect. Temperatures all year round tend to vary very little – in Kenya, for instance, the lowest average of 27 in June is only four degrees off the January peak. Other locations such as Botswana and its Okavango Delta can offer water-flooded expanses that cool hot limbs whilst offering incredible, expansive views over some of the world’s most incredible creatures. VIETNAM Or perhaps for somewhere completely different, get in right at the start of Vietnam’s dry season with an October escape to a land of rich wildlife, absorbing culture and complicated history that, these days, lures tourists looking for provenance and purpose as much as a place to relax and unwind.

Wild Child

Break out of the holiday resort this year and book an adventure your little ones will never forget. 1. Camp with the animals If your kids are animal lovers, they will relish the opportunity to sleep in close proximity to lions and giraffes (albeit not too close). Having realised that patrons simply can’t get enough of the mighty beasts, several zoos in the UK now offer overnight packages, which generally include access to attractions outside opening hours, and plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with the park’s residents. Zoos leading the way with this initiative include Port Lympne (Kent), Longleat (Wiltshire), Yorkshire Wildlife Park, London Zoo, Wild Place (Bristol), Camp Baboon (Bristol) and Whipsnade (Bedfordshire). 2. Learn bushcraft What if you could send your little ones on a holiday that could teach as well as entertain? Well that’s exactly what a bushcraft course can offer.

prevalent than in our kids. That makes getting it back more important than ever. 3. Push their limits For miniature thrill seekers, it has to be an adventure holiday. Offering any number of outdoor activities – including rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing and circus skills – these experiences boost confidence and offer a unique bonding experience where your child may make friends for life. Activities also enhance teambuilding skills, social interaction and the feeling of having problem-solved – all elements we should be passionate about reinforcing in the minds of our young ones. Go to PGL.co.uk for a comprehensive list of adventures.

4. Get on your bikes For a family holiday that will leave you all considerably fitter whilst potentially checking out some of the most stunning locations in the British Isles, consider a cycling trip. Saddle Skedaddle have a wealth of wonderful options which accommodate both the inexperienced and the Tour de France wannabes, along with guided and self-guided tours. They also cover Europe as well as the UK, so you can explore new horizons while pushing the pedals. For kids, there’s the exhilaration of being out and about, with wind whistling through their hair. For adults, the sight of an approaching pub can arrest even the most severe saddle sore discomfort!

Camp Wilderness is one of many companies that offer summer camps all over the UK, where your tiny tearaways can master everything from fire lighting and wilderness camping, to archery. There is a real fear nowadays that the conveniences of everyday life have seen human beings lose some of their primal survival instincts, and this is no more

Savvy spenders know to use comparison sites for many personal finance and related services, but making the most of such sites isn’t always easy. Here are some top tips for getting the best deal while saving time. INSURANCE Insurance is arguably the king of the comparison site, thanks to years of memorable ad campaigns. Getting comparisons makes sense for most forms of insurance, whether you’re a first-time customer or your policy is coming up for renewal. It doesn’t just save time going to individual sites, but reduces the need to keep typing in the same details about the cover you require. Counter-intuitively, it can make sense to try multiple comparison sites rather than just one. Both the policies and prices on offer can differ slightly across different comparison tools, so a little extra time could get you a better deal. The good news is that once you’ve run a search on a site, it will usually store your details and send you a reminder next year, letting you run a new search without having to type everything in again. It’s also worth checking insurers that make a point of not being available through comparison sites, most notably Direct Line, as they may have better deals. If you’ve got even more time to spare, check out cashback sites. You’ll need to check terms and conditions carefully, and be certain what you are signing up for, but they can work out to be a better option when you crunch the numbers. Occasionally you may get a cashback bonus that makes it a better option than going for a cheaper base price through a standard comparison site.

50

UTILITIES Sadly, gas and electricity supply is no longer an area where price comparison tools have much purpose. At the time of writing, the cost of wholesale gas (which also affects electricity production costs) is so high that suppliers have little incentive to offer deals cheaper than the government-imposed price cap. Without a crystal ball it’s impossible to predict future price movements, but it’s hard to see any supplier offering a sustainable fixed-price deal that’s below the price cap any time soon. BROADBAND, TV, MOBILES One area where people may overlook comparison tools is broadband, television and mobile phone services (particularly for those who own a handset outright). If you get your internet through a phone line rather than a cable network such as Virgin, you should be able to switch supplier with virtually no disruption, so even a small saving can be worthwhile. MORTGAGES Mortgages may seem like an obvious area for comparison sites, but they usually aren’t a perfect option. That’s because whether a particular provider will offer a loan, and on what terms, will vary significantly between individual customers. It’s certainly worth checking out a couple of price comparisons, but think of them more as a rough guide to whether buying a property in your desired price range is affordable rather than a way to choose a deal.

We meet every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at Edith Banks Memorial Hall in Northop village, Flintshire, CH7 6BQ. There is free parking in the car park opposite the hall. Contact Pauline on 07521 377 945 for more information. The best apps for home security Alfred This excellent app enables you to turn an old Apple or Android phone into a wireless security camera, which is great not just for home security but for pet or baby monitoring too. With motion detection, live streaming and a low-light filter for clearer night vision, it’s very useful.

Presence Video Security Presence does much the same thing as Alfred, but it’s also compatible with a wide range of Wi-Fi security sensors such as motion detectors, and there’s an iPad version too. You can also use Presence with multiple users simultaneously, so you might use it to live-stream something fun to family or friends.

Pet Monitor VIGI If you’re looking for a home-security app specifically for keeping an eye on your pets, this iOS/Android/Mac app is just the trick – and unlike many similar apps, there’s no need to pay for a subscription to use its features. We like the Activity Log that enables you to review your pet or pets’ past behaviour.
