Hello once again, and welcome to the latest issue of the Clwyd Connection, your handy local guide to some of the best local businesses and local events. I hope you had a good summer and managed to visit some of the carnivals, Country shows and fêtes that have been on recently. This month is also a busy one with the very welcome return of “Open Doors” in Ruthin and IfDenbigh.youdon’t know what that is, it’s an opportunity to see behind the doors of some of the many hidden architectural gems of the Vale of Clwyd. As many of these are private properties, it really is a lovely thing to be able see inside them. See the relevant pages in the magazine to find out more.

If you run out of temporary credit, speak to your supplier to explain your situation. They may give you extra temporary credit if you’re struggling with living costs. There are other reasons why they might give you extra credit too, including if you’re disabled, have a long-term health condition, or you have children under the age of 5. If you’re a prepayment meter customer, your energy supplier will be able to give you temporary credit if you can’t afford to top up your meter. They might add this to your meter automatically, but if they don’t, you can call them and ask them to do this.

There’s more government support coming from October, including a £400 payment to help you with your energy bills. If you have a prepayment meter, you’ll be given vouchers in the first week of each month from October, via SMS text, email or post. Make sure your energy company has your up-to-date details. If you have a child in school in Denbighshire, you may be able to apply for free school meals and a uniform & equipment grant of £255 (or £300 if your child is going into Year 7). You’ve also got leeks, something that are a must on a winter plot – they o er volume, flavour and spiciness right up until the soil freezes solid – and winter salads… rows of Lambs Le uce, Land Cress and mustard will need some protection from the elements, but once in the ground are resilient and happy to be picked across the colder months, where they’ll regrow and keep the supply to your lunch table constant. And you can never ignore hardy, tough and tasty onions (and shallots). ey are easy to plant, brilliantly versatile, and incredibly resourceful in the soil. Onions have an incredibly long growing season too

To advertise in the Clwyd Connection, call 01824 707013 and require slightly longer in the ground, so planting now will mean they won’t be ready until next summer. All of this proves that while many of us believe the end of the summer will gradually see our gardens lose their colourful, bountiful appeal, there is still plenty of work to do, and plenty of our outside spaces still to be enjoyed.

He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. is month, Alan Titchmarsh discusses pu ing early preparations in place for the cold season. So then, winter is coming! Okay, so it’s a way o yet, but ge ing our plans together early for what we want to see in our gardens in winter, is actually a really good idea, even if the whole discussion feels a li le, well, ‘out of season’, you might say!e notion of the winter vegetable is one we all stand by – rough, rustic, wholesome and happy, they are the meal mainstays of a season in which we want to be inside, wrapped up warm, with the products of our labour in front of us. ink about kale, brussels sprouts, parsnips, and who can resist the Jerusalem artichoke? ese are all easy to get into the group, simple to maintain, and will flourish as the year goes on, ready for picking just when the temperatures begin to drop sharply in November. You also need to start thinking about early spring vegetables –they’ll be longer in the ground but still working their magic through the winter months. In this case, definitely consider spinach, typically planted at the start of autumn, and carrots too. We associate carrots with sugary, summer flavours, but planted in November and with a bit of protection, the Adelaide carrot flourishes across the colder months for an early-spring treat.

It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making savings.Inanera of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation!

In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how, in a time of rising costs, we can make savings in other places.

So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money.

He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.

There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone. Telecommunications, broadband and connected industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumerled price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile

It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data.

The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line.

Retiling a splashback area behind the sink is usually straightforward, and can provide a gorgeous focal point. The messy bit is removing the old tiles and repairing the surface behind. If saving money is key, plain, rectangular tiles can look super-smart laid upright and aligned, especially with coloured grout for a graphic, modern look.

1 Update lighting

Replacing a cheap vinyl floor covering with beautiful stone or ceramic floor tiles will transform a kitchen, and it may be possible to add underfloor heating at the same time. Alternatively, hide an unattractive floor with a large rug –braided rugs look pretty or there are lots of modern outdoor rugs that can withstand spills.

A new shade can work wonders to update kitchen lighting, while replacing a whole fitting is not usually costly, provided wiring already exists.

3

5

Glamorous hardware Cupboard handles, knobs and pulls are easy to replace, and there is an enormous range of shapes, styles and materials available. Measure for handles carefully so that new ones can be bolted through the same holes.

A coat of hardwearing, wipeable paint on the walls gives a quick and easy new look. Cabinets can be repainted too. Remove the doors and all the hardware, sand thoroughly and prime. A satin top coat avoids highlighting fingerprints and minor brushstroke imperfections.

10 Artwork and accessories Hang beautiful paintings, prints or photographs in orderly lines or balanced groups on your kitchen walls. Add accessories that coordinate with the style of your scheme, and perhaps some house plants and/or fresh flowers.

Floor story

Overhaul window treatments

Choose bulbs for the right colour temperature – cool, bright white over working areas, with a warmer glow for relaxed eating. A dimmer is always a good idea.

In a kitchen-diner or an island kitchen with bar stools, the style of seating is important, so think about an overhaul. Buy new, consider antique or vintage options, or consider repainting or reupholstering your current pieces.

A new splashback

Sort out storage Start with a clear-out, and if you need extra shelves inside cupboards, now is the time to add them, with internal organisers to keep everything tidy. Where space is short and items have to be on display, use efficient racks, rails and wall grids, adding baskets, jars and boxes that coordinate with each other and the room as a whole.

Assess seating

Changing a kitchen tap is a simple upgrade that gives the room a new lease of life. Finishes include chrome, stainless steel, brass, nickel, copper, gold or black, or how about a pull-out spray, water filter or a boiling-water tap?

These smart, neutral tiles have been grouted to match the cabinets beneath. Marylebone Gloss Ivory Flat Metro Tiles, £19.95 per square metre, wallsandfloors.co.uk. A custom-made blind will fit your window perfectly without breaking the bank. Regalis silver-patterned roller blinds, £57.71 for a 120x120cm window, englishblinds.co.uk.

A made-to-measure roller blind is an inexpensive kitchen update with a major impact. A more expensive option would be New England-style shutters, which add thermal and acoustic insulation, too.

6

Signed up for a beauty subscription and now have a drawer full of unused products? Why not swap them for products you do want? There are several Facebook groups designed to help you do just that.

9

Sign up for sales Brands usually offer a discount for subscribing to their newsletter. And newsletters often give you early access to sales. To stop your inbox getting clogged, set up an email address just for newsletters. Only check it when you know you’re running low on products, so you don’t get sucked into buying things you don’t need.

2 Ignore the brand name Without the logo, could you really tell whether that lipstick was Bobbi Brown or Barry M?

7

Go back to basics

3 Hit the supermarket Aldi, in particular, has gained a bit of a cult following for its health and beauty products, some of which are (cough) remarkably similar to those made by top brands. While beauty dupes won’t be exactly the same as the ones they’re inspired by, they may well be close enough that you’ll hardly notice the switch. And considering the saving, it’s well worth giving them a try. Start with Aldi’s Lacura Original Hot Cloth Cleanser (£2.99) and Naturals Eye Palette (£5.99), and Lidl’s Cien Q10 Night Cream (£1.49).

Think small We’re often lured into buying promotional sets, palettes and packages that promise a big saving on the RRP. However, it’s only worth buying them if you’re going to use everything. For example, three individual eye shadows may work out better value than a palette half-full of shades that you’ll barely touch.

Of course brands want you to layer your skincare products. They’ll make more money if they can sell you a moisturiser, SPF cream, serum, moisturiser, primer, BB cream etc., etc., etc. Instead, look for multitasking products that are packed with active ingredients, such as a tinted moisturiser with SPF.

5

1

Be fickle We often stick religiously to brands we know and trust, but we shouldn’t be afraid to experiment. Head to TK Maxx and other discount stores to see what’s on offer. You may well find a new favourite shampoo or body cream at a fraction of the price you’ve been paying for your current brand. Which brings us to…

4 Think big Generally, bigger sizes cost less per millilitre than smaller ones. So, buy the biggest size you can afford of products that have a decent shelf life, like body wash, perfume, shampoo and most hairstyling products. That said….

Sell and swap

The waters around Boa Vista are also a breeding ground for humpback whales, giving you the chance to book a catamaran tour to see these mighty mammals. Sightings are possible from late February through to May.

Taking its influence from Brazil’s Mardi Gras, the carnival officially lasts a week – but locals will tell you Carnival fever begins at the end of the previous year!

The festival fever is alive and kicking Winter in Cape Verde brings with it a whole host of festivals and celebrations. Mindelo’s annual Carnival on the island of São Vicente is by far the archipelago’s most famous event. Held each year on Shrove Tuesday, the carnival sees the small Cape Verdean town come alive with live music, colourful costumes and dancing.

It’s the perfect place to go island-hopping With each island offering its own unique flavour, why settle for just one? Imagine starting your holiday on the beach, followed by a couple of days spent drinking in mountain scenery, then the next morning you’re off to hike a volcano. If that sounds exciting, you’ll love an islandhopping holiday around Cape Verde.

Don’t miss a visit to the island of Santo Antão. A wonderland for hikers, it’s by far the greenest island in the archipelago.

The beaches are divine Powder-soft sand washed by turquoise sea, lined with swaying palm trees: the beaches in Cape Verde are paradise.

The archipelago’s volcanic landscape, mountain scenery and cultural cities make the islands an adventurer’s playground too.

With its white-sand beaches, stunning mountain scenery and vibrant culture, it’s no wonder Cape Verde is becoming one of the UK’s favourite spots for winter sun. This idyllic archipelago may be known for its winning combination of sun, sea and sand, but with ten islands to explore there’s plenty of room for adventure too. Here are five reasons to consider Cape Verde when planning your next winter break – and what not to miss while you’re there.

Sal, the archipelago’s most popular island, is home to the gorgeous Santa Maria beach, where bustling bars, shops and restaurants offer a welcome break from the midday sun. Fancy a little more peace and quiet? On the island of Boa Vista, you’ll find unspoilt stretches of sand with barely a soul in sight to share them with.

Witness Fogo’s lunar-like landscape or immerse yourself in Santiago’s lush green valleys. If you’re looking for a more cultural experience, you’ll love the island of São Vicente with its buzzing musical scene. The higher winds during November and March make Cape Verde’s beaches a fantastic place to practice watersports too.

You could see turtles and whales Cape Verde is home to some of the most important loggerhead turtle nesting sites in the world. On the island of Sal you can visit Project Diversity, a non-profit organisation that protects the turtles’ nesting sites and helps hatchlings make their way to the sea. Visit between July and December for the best chance of witnessing the tiny turtles’ journey.

Ingredients (serves 4)

To advertise in the Clwyd Connection, call 01824 70701336

2 shallots, very finely chopped (100g or 3.5 oz)

2 tbsp olive oil

Introduction

• 600ml (2 1/2 cups) tomato juice (with an optional touch of gravy browning added in for extra colour if desired)

• 3 tbsp tarragon, chopped

• 2 tomatoes, skinned, deseeded and finely diced

• A few sprigs of fresh parsley to garnishadd to the frying pan, placing the shallot under the chicken so that the shallot cooks.

• 250g (9oz) button mushrooms, finely sliced

2. Put the floured chicken pieces into the hot olive oil, skin side down, and fry without moving the pieces until golden-brown underneath. This should take around 8-10 minutes. Next, turn the chicken and fry until browned on the other side. Now finely chop the shallot and Method

5. Next, add in the parsley and diced tomato, shaking the pan to mix everything in well. Spoon the mushrooms, parsley and tomato over the chicken and garnish with sprigs of parsley, then serve.

The fearsome yet fantastically flamboyant Marco Pierre White relays his splendid Chicken Chasseur recipe.

1. Gently heat half of the oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan. The oil should be hot, but not so hot that it scorches the floured chicken. Next, spread a layer of flour on a plate or a tray, and coat the chicken pieces evenly and thoroughly, shaking off any excess flour. This will add a golden-brown colour to the cooked chicken and help to thicken the sauce.

• 1 tbsp plain flour, for coating

• 2 tbsp parsley, chopped

While hedgehogs are excellent at finding their own food, a helping hand in a time of need goes a long way. Of course, if you see a really poorly hedgehog who appears to be in need of treatment, medical your first step should be contactto your local advice.centrerescuefor

For anyone who’s ever chanced upon these little wonders, the plight of the hedgehog - in the last decade numbers have fallen by 30% - will feel like a real shame. After all, they are charming, nervous and largely harmless animals. However, there are some things you can do to help our hog friends survive their current plight. Hog heaven Create a nesting place for any expected hedgehogs by curating log and leaf piles, plus wilderness areas. In addition, buy a purpose-built hedgehog home to provide a safe haven. Fallen leaves also offer perfect nesting material, so make sure to leave some when you next clear your garden.

Put away the pellets There is no need for slug pellets when you have a thriving hedgehog population, as these hungry little hogs can hoover up over 100 snails, slugs and worms every night!

Protection A vital feature for hedgehogs in your garden is long grass, where they might hide away and feel safe from the gaze of predators. This grass and surrounding plants will encourage a mass of snails and slugs which, as above, are a hedgehog delicacy!

Create hedgehog highways If you live in a terraced plot and have gardens that are side by side in a row behind the houses – and providing your neighbours agree! – make little tunnels through the garden fences so hedgehogsthatcan have a corridor between Thisgardens.transforms your garden from an isolated nature reserve into a spiny mammal thoroughfare, which is fun for all concerned.

With their bristly bodies and snuffling snouts, hedgehogs are one of the nation’s favourite garden visitors. Yet despite pleas for urban and rural gardeners to take better care of these cute animals, hedgehog numbers continue to decline at an alarming rate.

Looking after hedgehog health If you find an underweight sickly-lookingorhedgehog,oralternativelyahedgehogactiveinwinter, put out tinned cat or dog food and fresh water.

Saturday 1st October 10am to 2pm at the Presbyterian Church Ruthin Wynnstay Road, Ruthin Shed in Rhuthun. Ruthin Men’s Shed has been created to help Men with their mental health and to stop guys feeling isolated and on their own during their bad periods, there is no actual correct way of running a shed it’s entirely up to the guys involved in the shed activities can be anything. We have been meeting at Nibbles cafe for the past few months where the guys will have a brew and a bite to eat if they want to but we generally discuss anything that may be causing anyone problems in their life, we openly talk, laugh, cry about mental health and no judgement is made on anyone. We are part of the Resource group from Cai Dai Denbigh where people can participate in Gardening work or craft work, caring for nature and wildlife in general, there are two other groups we are also part of Repair cafe very similar to the BBC program and Library of things where the idea is you can borrow a gardening implement and return it when you have finished with it with a small donation. There is a lot a potential for further activities to be carried out by anyone coming along to any of the groups .
