Hello once again, and welcome to your handy local guide. I hope you had a good January. Because it wasn’t overly cold, I spent a fair bit of time in my garden catching up on some jobs. I planted more fruit trees and various berry bushes as well as moving a couple of plants that had outgrown where they were. As I started to write this bit, it dawned on me that it was 2 years ago that we first started to hear the word “Coronavirus” amid scenes on TV of city wide lockdowns in China. I think it’s fair to say that no one could have anticipated the effect this would soon be having an all of our lives and how we live, let alone that 2 years on, it would still be having a big impact, but we can all see things are getting better, and by continuing to be careful, I’m sure this year will be much better. I know already, that a number of events are being planned for later in the year by local groups and volunteers and that is something to look forward to. This month, following a suggestion by a Ruthin resident, we highlight a Local Hero - Mary, who has long been a part of The Children’s’ Charity shop in Ruthin. It’s great to show people that their efforts have been appreciated. If you know an unsung Local Hero that you think needs recognising, feel free to get in touch. Good bye for now, see you next month.

With Valentine’s Day in the air, what better time to treat the one you love to a romantic getaway? Whether you’re dating, going steady, or in your fiftieth year of marriage, ditching the daily routine and escaping to somewhere outstanding is vital for keeping romance alive. From luxurious spa weekends to glamping beneath the stars, there are countless ways to spend quality time with your partner. Here are five romantic getaway ideas guaranteed to add some spice to your love life. Spa weekend When it comes to rest, relaxation and romance, nothing beats an indulgent spa break in a dreamy locale. Although there are plenty of sunsoaked spa locations to jet off to (Bali and the Maldives, for example) there’s probably a luxury spa within driving distance of you too. Imagine enjoying one another’s company in a bubbling Jacuzzi, before slipping off for a couples’ massage. From sprawling country house hotels cradled by beautiful gardens to townhouses with thermal spas, there’s a romantic spa weekend for every taste and budget. Glamping Is there anything more romantic than cuddling up with the one you love in a cosy cabin next to a crackling fire? We think not! That’s why, when it comes to romantic breaks, glamping is certainly top of the list. From yurts in the Swiss mountains to log cabins in Canada’s Banff National Park, not to mention tipis, bell tents and hideaways at home too, there’s no better way to reconnect with nature. City break When we think of romantic city breaks, cruising along the Seine in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower may immediately spring to mind. But Paris isn’t the only city that promises tales of beauty, love and romance. Rome is famous for its opera and ballet, while Venice’s gondola rides amidst historic palazzos ooze romance – and that’s just in Europe. Travel further, and you and your beloved could be soaking up the old-world charm of Canada’s Quebec City, or cosying up beneath the cherry blossoms of Japan’s most romantic city, Kyoto. Vineyard stays Culturally, wine has long been an important part of celebrating romance. From anniversary dinners to your wedding day, it’s no secret that a glass of vino makes everything feel a little bit more special. So, if you and your partner share a love for wine, why not consider an intimate vineyard stay? The region of Tuscany in Italy is synonymous with wine and dining, but the UK is home to dozens of estates too, offering accommodation, wine tours, foodie experiences – and more. Island retreat For many of us, nothing says romance like sinking your toes into a soft, sandy beach. And while the likes of Hawaii, the Caribbean and the Maldives certainly promise the honeymoon of dreams, there’s plenty of budget-friendly islands to escape to on a budget too. From the remote mountainous terrain of Scotland’s Isle of Skye to the unspoilt beauty of Cornwall’s Scilly Isles, this island we call home has all the necessary ingredients for your next romantic getaway.

The survey involves simply keeping a list of the birds you see visiting your garden over the course of a week, and then entering this into the BTO’s online recording system. You can also record other garden wildlife, such as butterflies and mammals.

Back Garden Birdwatching Share your garden bird sightings to contribute to a national survey. Here’s how… This spring we have spent a lot of our time in our homes and gardens and so, by now, we may also be familiar with the regular wild visitors. Chances are you’ve been taking pleasure in putting seed onto a bird table and watching the different birds arriving through the day. Perhaps it has piqued your interest to know more about the familiar and unusual birds that you might have seen. If that’s the case, why not contribute to an ongoing survey on garden birds? Each week, all year round, for the past 25 years, ‘citizen scientists’ have recorded the birds and other wildlife visiting their gardens, enabling researchers at the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to answer important questions about garden wildlife. The BTO Garden BirdWatch offers an opportunity to learn more about garden birds and other wildlife while contributing directly to BTO’s important scientific research on the value of gardens for wildlife. The organisation say: “The more we know about how wildlife uses our gardens, the more we can make our cities, towns, villages and individual gardens better for nature.”

GET INVOLVED! The Garden BirdWatch is normally run as a membership, with an annual fee of £17, that entitles you to a helpful book and regular magazines. The generous financial support of participants is what allows BTO to carry out its work monitoring garden wildlife and its scientific research. Membership also entitles you to access to the online recording system, a regular e-newsletter with information on recording and identifying garden wildlife, as well as access to the BTO’s team of wildlife experts, to answer your questions. Kate Risely, Garden BirdWatch Organiser at the BTO says: “A connection to nature is so important to our well-being, and the easiest place to watch and learn about wildlife is in our own gardens. We hope that this opportunity to join the Garden BirdWatch community will help people across the UK find new meaning in their garden birdwatching, to learn new things and to play a part in national research into our garden wildlife.” To take part in Garden BirdWatch, visit the website www.bto.org/joingbw The BTO is the UK’s leading bird research charity. A growing membership and up to 60,000 volunteer birdwatchers contribute to the organisation’s surveys, collecting information that underpins conservation action in the UK. The BTO’s work is funded by supporters, government trusts, industry and conservation organisations. At its offices in Suffolk, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, staff analyse and publicise the results of surveys and projects. www.bto.org

Stuck in a rut when it comes to mealtimes? This month’s recommended books might help… Green One Pound Meals – Miguel Barclay Cooking on a budget really isn’t easy, but Miguel Barclay’s One Pound Meals series takes some of the headache out of meal preparation. The latest in the series focuses on planet-friendly dishes. As you’d expect, there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan meals, from cauliflower cups to courgette kofte, but there are also lots of dishes to tempt staunch meat eaters too. Plus, you’ll get tips on eco-conscious shopping and minimising food waste. Under the Olive Tree – Irini Tzortzoglou In the depths of winter, Irini’s recipes will transport you to sun-filled summer holidays. The first half of the book is dedicated to simpler midweek Greek meals. The second half is full of showstoppers to wow friends and family. Expect everything from moussaka, braised octopus, and baklava to chickpea fritters. You’ll also read about Irini’s family and where her love for good, honest ingredients and home cooking comes from. Love to Cook – Mary Berry Lost your love for cooking? This TV series tie-in might help to bring it back. It features 120 recipes from one of the UK’s favourite cooks. The focus is on no-fuss recipes to ‘bring happiness into your kitchen’. You’ll find simple stir fries, easy curries, warming casseroles and plenty of mouth-watering puddings. Many of the dishes can be prepared the day before or frozen. Pinch of Nom Comfort Food – Kay Featherstone and Kate Allinson ‘Comforting’ and ‘diet’ are two words that don’t usually go together. The Pinch of Nom team is trying to prove that you can enjoy flavoursome, satisfying meals even when you’re aiming to lose weight. Recipes include cheesy aubergine bake, slow-cooker stroganoff, and halloumi couscous burgers, along with plenty of indulgent desserts. There are 100 recipes altogether. More than 40 are vegetarian and 47 are gluten-free. Nadiya’s Fast Flavours – Nadiya Hussain Don’t be deceived by the name – most of these recipes aren’t exactly speedy. However, most require under 30 minutes of hands-on time and a fair few can be whipped up for a quick midweek meal. There are twists on classics such as macaroni cheese, along with unique flavour combinations that are sure to please if you’re bored to tears with everyday meals. Think honey-baked sriracha drumsticks, coffee-glazed focaccia, and banana-skin bagels. Family Comforts – Rebecca Wilson Fed up of cooking two different meals most nights? Not only are all these recipes child- and adult-friendly, each one can be adapted for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets. You’ll find plenty of easy midweek meals, along with hands-off slow-cooker dishes, weekend meals and puddings. While they’re designed to appeal to kids, there are also big flavours to keep the grownups happy. Think mild curries, lemon and garlic chicken, and loaded Mexican sweet potatoes. Each recipe is nutritionist approved and there are extra tips on weaning, batch cooking and food preparation.

Celebrating a LOCAL HERO “Mary” from The Children’s Society in Ruthin

M

ary has been our volunteer shop manager since 2001 and currently leads a team of 20 volunteers post Covid-19. Mary’s strap line is “everyone is equal in the Ruthin Shop”. Mary has decided to step down as volunteer manager, not a decision that has been easy for Mary as the shop is a vital part of her life. Mary is enormously dedicated and driven to raise money for children, she has been the key cog in this shop. Mary has volunteered with no back-office equipment and completes all the mandatory paperwork in the traditional manner, posting it to the national office weekly and completing by hand. She has always been on top of the paperwork and keeping in the loop with what’s happening within the wider organisation.

Below, are some of the comments and praise from the team at the shop as well as the Retail Operations Team “I have known Mary for about 16 years. She is so kind and a wonderful Manager and friend”. Ann “Hard working, very loyal to the charity, always cheerful and caring.” “Mary is one in a million, she is highly thought of by volunteers and the public. She is a star. ” Rhian (Main text from Antony Richards Regional Retail Manager)

Mary has led a team that has generated around £1.2 Million Pounds across these 20 years. In typical fashion, “A team effort” as Mary would say. The outstanding achievement of being our last voluntary run shop across our entire portfolio, is incredible.

Do you know a Local Hero? If you know a local person, any age, whose efforts need to be acknowledged, please email trevor@clwydconnection.co.uk or write to "Local Hero" Connection Magazines Ltd, 16 Parc Alun, Mold, CH7 1LQ.

How can you create an interiors scheme that adds to your overall comfort and contentment? We look at ways to decorate for a happy, healthy home. Science aligns with art when it comes to developing a sense of well-being in our homes, with serious research that outlines ways in which we can redefine design schemes to promote mental and physical good health. Scientific experiments have shown that, if we get it right, we can reduce stress, blood pressure and heart rates, while increasing productivity and creativity. Add some house plants Our brains are wired to respond positively to the signs of a healthy natural world, like house plants, not to mention the mental positives that come from the mindful repetition of watering, spraying, dead heading and so on, while enjoying watching your plant thrive. As well as real, living elements placed indoors, looking out onto beautiful views is demonstrably good for us, as are artworks that realistically depict natural scenes. Get the light right Numerous studies have also linked natural light to increases in mood and cognitive performance. If you are renovating, it’s worth looking at light-enhancing alterations such as enlarging windows, replacing solid doors with glazed ones, adding a skylight or French doors, and so on. On a more basic level, check that curtains or tall furniture do not block windows, and place mirrors where they can bounce light around. High-sheen surfaces can help with this, too.

cinnamon or vanilla for creativity and lavender for relaxing. Soften any tinny sounds with rugs, wall hangings and large-leaved plants, while quietly playing de-stressing nature sounds such as the wind in the trees or birdsong. Consider colour The theory goes that we react well to colours that remind us of positive experiences, which often occur in nature. So blue (water) is calming, green (spring growth) is stimulating, yellow (sunshine and crops) is welcoming and red (fruit and berries) is stimulating. Green has also been linked to enhanced performance – so is a great colour for a home office. De-clutter and display Studies have linked clutter with fatigue, depression and lack of focus, so tidying up really can reduce stress and anxiety. But sparse spaces are also stress-inducing, hence the ideal option is to have well-organised areas in which you display items meaningful to you. A pleasing variation of colours and shapes, arranged with a sense of order, is the best way to appeal to the brain. Curved shapes are linked to comfort, while straight lines indicate efficiency – so a squishy sofa feels even more comfortable because of its rounded shape, while a work desk will benefit from the geometric lines of, let’s say, angular organisers and contemporary lighting.

Artificial lighting is worth designing with our circadian rhythms in mind, so that it aligns with natural periods of light and dark, and too-bright light does not interrupt our sleep/wake cycle. One trick is to use full-spectrum lights during the daytime then dimming them to a warm light in the evening, triggering melatonin and helping you go to sleep. Make sure your home smells and sounds good Opening windows and airing your home thoroughly can be greatly beneficial, and why not add some scents that make you feel positive? Use a natural wax candle or an electric diffuser, and try lemon for office work or studying,

Fashionable, but also tranquil: this living room incorporates layers of texture and pops of greenery to create an intriguing and inviting space. Olivia linen four-seater sofa, £2,629; Tamara velvet armchair, £1,738; Alpha floor lamp, £1,179; Arc coffee table, £699; all Pepper Sq: 020 8243 8559; peppersq.com.

Be practical – and emotional Our homes fulfil many different functions, from work space to entertaining space to somewhere to relax. The practicalities of design are crucial to ensure that every corner of your home works hard doing what it’s meant to do, so good storage is key, as is an easy flow from room to room and the placing of furniture in convenient, practical ways. A lamp next to an armchair, with a side table close enough to reach, perhaps near a radiator or a fire; the dishwasher close to the cupboard in which the crockery is stored; a shower with an adjacent towel rail and enough space to stand and dry yourself… Where there are frustrations in carrying out your dayto-day life, try to change them and you may well find that your mood changes, too. And finally, create spaces for socialising, for bringing people together to talk and enjoy each other’s company – with seating in an L-shape or, even better, a circle, and also spaces for relaxation: calm and quiet, perhaps painted in a darker colour, where you can feel safe, private and completely, peacefully, yourself.

Not too cluttered, not too sparse, this bedroom also uses soft colours and appealing textures. Denver white wooden double bed, £229.99, Furniture and Choice: 0333 015 0000; furniturechoice.co.uk.

February in the UK is not noted for its abundance of fresh produce, but we make the best of it by having three days in the month that are all about food, and one that is about love – and therefore more food. On the 1st it’s the Chinese New Year, the 6th is Yorkshire Pudding Day, the 14th is Valentine’s Day. And then Pancake Day. Ah, although that is often in February, this year it’s on the 1st March, but what’s one day between friends? Let’s start planning it in February anyway. Chinese New Year 2022 is the year of the tiger. Of course, Chinese restaurants and takeaways will be making the most of the date with various promotions and special dishes. But, maybe this is the year you should bring out your inner tiger and have the courage to make your own from scratch.

Yorkshire Pudding Day A batter of eggs, flour and milk (or sometimes water) is poured into oiled and preheated baking pans. Although typically served with a roast dinner, for a special February treat you can’t beat toad in the hole, where sausages are added to the batter. If we are having a roast, let’s make the most of what is in season by eating root vegetables – carrots, swede and turnips. Add a bit of winter cabbage, too, for those all-important greens. Valentine’s Day Not strictly about food, but loving couples often celebrate the day by going out for a meal. And of course, chocolate, which is rumoured to be an aphrodisiac, is a popular gift. You do need to go for the dark stuff though but if your beloved doesn’t like it, maybe milk chocolate will have the desired effect, simply because of the thought behind it. Red wine – or indeed any alcohol within reason – has its part to play on this day too.

Pancake Day This is a batter of eggs, flour and milk. Yes, it’s a Yorkshire pudding in wolf’s clothing. The different cooking method means pancakes are never served with a roast dinner, any more than Yorkshires are sprinkled with sugar and lemon. For a bit of variety, whip up fluffy American-style pancakes using selfraising flour instead of plain, and include baking powder for extra rise. Cook up some apples and add some spices to give your pancakes at least a bit of seasonal interest.

Ingredients (serves 6) • 150g unsalted butter (at room temperature), plus extra for greasing • 500g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting • 500g dried pitted dates • 1 orange • 2 chai tea bags • 20g of bicarb • 350g dark brown sugar

Jamie Oliver’s Chai Sticky Date Pudding with Toffee Sauce Introduction

There has been a tradition in recent years to let our Christmas flavours and tastes extend into the new year, and I really like that. After all, why should it be that we can’t enjoy turkey in spring, or add brandy butter to our desserts in summer. Dates are one of those fruits that count as another festive filler that seems to be forgotten about during other times of the year, but I don’t see why – they’re sweet, full of texture and actually really versatile. So as we work our way through winter, why not extend that homely, rustic feeling with this date and toffee pudding. It’s warm, tasty and reassuring; and unlike Christmas, it won’t cost you the earth!

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C and place a tray of water in the bottom (this creates steam to keep the pudding moist), then butter and flour a 25cm tin. Now chop the pitted dates, and zest the orange. 2. Boil 400ml of water, turn the heat off, then add the tea bags and infuse for 3mins. Boil again,

whisk in the bicarb and add the dates. Leave to one side to cool to room temperature. 3. Next, cream the butter and sugar in a food processor until light and fluffy. Now whisk the eggs, vanilla, orange zest, golden syrup and treacle and pour into the butter mixture in stages, beating until smooth each time. Sieve the flour and fold gently into the batter. Stir in

• 5 large free-range eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 50g golden syrup • 75g black treacle For the Toffee Sauce • 125g double cream • 50g unsalted butter • 50g dark brown sugar • 30g golden syrup • 1 lug of brandy the date mixture, then pour into the Bundt tin. 4. Bake for one hour, or until a knife inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tins for 5mins. 5. Pop all the sauce ingredients in a small pan and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Simmer for 5mins, stirring, then remove from the heat. 6. Finally, invert the pudding onto a platter and baste with a little of the sauce. Serve with clotted cream and the remaining sauce on the side.

What is it? One exception to the widespread replacement of MPVs with SUVs is Ford, with its S-Max and Galaxy seven-seaters both benefitting from a new hybrid powertrain that aims to keep these models going. What’s new? This latest S-Max Hybrid comes from investment into the brand’s Barcelona plant, with this powertrain also appearing in the new Kuga and Galaxy. It’s an all-new setup for Ford and is currently the only hybrid MPV of its kind. What’s under the bonnet? For the S-Max Hybrid, Ford combines a 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine with a 1.1kWh battery and electric motor, with front-wheel drive via a CVT automatic transmission. It kicks out 187bhp, goes from 0-60mph time in 9.6 seconds and has a 115mph top speed, though most will choose the Hybrid for the efficiency benefits, with its 147g/km CO2 emissions being 10 per cent lower than the diesel’s. Ford claims a fuel economy figure of 44.1mpg but we averaged 50mpg during testing, giving us a 600-plus mile range. What’s it like to drive? The S-Max is rather good to drive, feeling more like a hatchback than a big seven-seater through corners, yet at the same time is a comfortable cruiser with a compliant ride. The hybrid system is also one of the best ‘self-charging’ setups around and will even run as an EV for short bursts, which helps on

efficiency. The CVT gearbox does somewhat sap performance when accelerating, but is largely quite a good fit. How does it look? The S-Max isn’t bad-looking. In our test car’s ST-Line trim, it gets large two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels, a sporty body kit and a range of gloss black touches. We reckon a seven-seat people carrier has never looked so good. What’s it like inside? The interior layout is very much ‘old Ford’, with none of the digital dials and minimalist layout in the brand’s most modern models. However, the S-Max is practical, offering a flexible seating arrangement and three rows of seats that lets seven adults sit relatively comfortably. With just two front seats in position, it offers a huge 2,020 litres of boot space. What’s the spec like? The Hybrid is available in the same trio of trims as the standard S-Max – Titanium, ST-Line and Vignale. Standard equipment is generous with keyless entry, front and rear parking sensors and an eight-inch touchscreen, but ST-Line would be our pick, adding electric and heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. However, only the top-spec Vignale model comes with an electric boot and LED headlights, as well as a reversing camera and massaging leather seats. Prices start from £36,530 for a Titanium and rise to £41,790 for the Vignale. Verdict The Ford S-Max is arguably better to drive and more spacious than many similarly-sized SUVs. The new hybrid powertrain gives the S-Max a further lifeline, and its efficiency will likely impress. Though pricey and not up-to-date inside, it remains one of the better seven-seaters on the market and a brilliant large family car.

In the UK, we spent almost £8 million on pets and related products back in 2020. According to the Office for National Statistics, this represented an increase in spending of around 170 per cent within a fifteen-year period. It seems that most of us will lavish not only attention on our animals but also provide them with activities and enrichment as a matter of course. Naturally, it is man’s best friend, the dog, that remains the most popular pet, closely followed by cats and, since the Covid-19 lockdown, indoor fish. As pet love has grown, so has the associated industry. Emerging trends show that we now show far more concern over nutrition for our pets than ever before. There are new food brands emerging with increasing frequency, rising to the challenge of providing good nutrition including supplements and superfoods.

Pet owners are more likely to take their animals to an array of activities. Dogs, being the most portable of pets, now benefit from doggy swimming pools, a range of classes such as scent work and agility, fun fields for safe play and animal-friendly cafes. Even the National Trust has introduced a new ‘three pawprint rating’ to show at a glance the most dog-friendly venues. There is clearly a significant financial commitment that goes hand in hand with pet ownership. Pets are no longer consigned to the kitchen – they’re truly part of the family. By Caroline Knight

Take Care Of Your Toes Fungal nail infections are relatively common and can take a while to treat — so identify it early and get expert help, as Michael Staines BSc (podiatric medicine), DpodM MChs, explains. How do you know if you have a fungal toe nail infection? Is it based on discolouration, with nails turning white, yellow or black? Is there thickness or crumbling? It can be very difficult to tell. Fungal nail infections (Onychomycosis) can initially be white flecks which turn into yellow staining, however, there are many, many other, similar-looking nail conditions. Although it is possible to buy a myriad of different products to treat fungal nail infections, some are unproven, so it is well worth getting expert advice. NICE (National Institute for Clinical

Excellence) guidelines include topical products which are designed to be painted on, and systemic (oral medications) that are prescription-only. The best way to tell if you have a fungal nail infection is to collect samples of the infected nail and have them tested at a Microbiology Department at the request of your doctor. If you take the sample yourself, be careful to take the correct bit of nail. If you don’t, the test result could come back negative.

Mike graduated in 1991 at the University of Westminster School of Podiatric Medicine. Worked in the NHS as an Advanced Podiatrist (diabetes). Has post-graduate qualifications in Sports Podiatry and Diabetes management, and is a qualified NonMedical Prescriber.

I would suggest a visit to a reputable podiatrist who can assess your nails and explain the best way to deal with this condition. The danger is that if one nail is infected and you cut that nail, and then others after, you will probably infect them all.

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about his favourite things in the garden. Gardens are evolving, emerging, changing entities in almost every week of the year, so when it comes to choosing my favourite plants, flowers and sights, it’s a difficult thing to judge and very much dependent upon the season. I think if a cross-section of people are asked to name the thing in a garden that gives them joy and a feeling of admiration beyond anything else, a good number will choose the rose. Think about it, is there anything else that offers such a breadth of colour, such a contradiction of beauty and danger (in the sense of a seductive flower and the prickly thorns that linger just a few inches down), or that offers a bouquet that has melted the hearts of a thousand romantics! Okay, so yes, a rose sometimes can seem soand-so, perhaps because we embrace them so fully in our lives,

and I accept there is something perhaps even a little cliched about the simple rose these days. However, I will be so bold as to say this - a garden without a fragrant rose isn’t much of a garden at all! For other times of the year, I will pick out certain things that give me incredible satisfaction. I look forward to these coming round, and their emergence is always very special. The first snowdrop in January; the first daffodil in February. These are the types of flowers that mark a change in or a progression of the season, and that always fills

that in a professional gardener’s back yard you will have the highest grade of plants and the most difficult to bring to flower, but we all like to make life easier for ourselves, and the penstemon certainly fulfils that brief. It’s hardy, flowers for months, is slugresistant, and offers a fantastic spray of colour as a border perennial. I have also really taken a shine to the aubrieta in recent years. We all know what it looks like – it’s that beautiful tumbling purple spray of miniature-coloured flowers that will cascade off rocks, boulders and other inhospitable lumps in a way

me with hope and expectation. You know these beautiful elements will always arrive, but still, it’s a relief when they do! As for others that feel special, I regularly point people towards penstemons. I think there’s always an expectation

34 To advertise your business in Connection Magazines - call 01824 707013

that bring them life and beauty. The flowers themselves almost resemble little four-leaf clovers, and perhaps it’s that expression of happiness and love that makes the aubrieta such a winner in every way. Finally, I would look to the sweet pea. There’s even one named after me, and while I’m not so selfabsorbed to pretend that’s the reason why I like it so much, if there was any variety to be named after me this would be the one. Sweet peas are just so

versatile – sow individually in root trainers or in pots filled with seed compost, choose pretty much any colour across the spectrum, are perfect in borders, and you can even get the seeds in the ground in any range from November through to June. For me, they are the ultimate, and a great pleasure. Of course, tending to a garden is all about personal taste. These are some of my favourites, but I know reading this you may well feel I have it completely wrong. That’s the beauty of gardening – it’s a landscape that’s entirely yours to do entirely what you will with, and we will all agree that’s wonderful.

According to a growing number of experts, sitting is the latest health hazard to look out for. But why is a sedentary lifestyle so bad for us, and what can we do about it? Working from home, online shopping and periods of self-isolation: since the first lockdown struck, many of us will have noticed that we’re sitting down more than ever before. Unfortunately, this change of lifestyle comes at a cost. Evidence suggests that excessive sitting can expose us to a range of health issues, from backache and varicose veins to diabetes. The reason? Humans were built to stand, with the heart, cardiovascular system and bowel functioning far more efficiently when we’re upright. Now, this isn’t great news for the thousands of us that have desk-based jobs – but don’t lose hope just yet. There are lots of things you can do to help: Invest in a standing desk If you work in an office or from home, one of the easiest ways to reduce your sitting time is to invest in a standing desk. Standing is certainly better for us than sitting. However, there is evidence to suggest that standing still for long periods of time isn’t hugely beneficial to our bodies either. Balance is key; start by standing for 30 to 60 minutes a day and gradually increase until you’re alternating between standing and sitting every hour. Take regular breaks It can be hard to motivate yourself to leave your desk during the working day. However, taking regular breaks – even if it’s just to grab a cuppa – can make a world of difference.

In the office and need to send an email? Get away from your desk and relay the message in person. Working from home and fancy a coffee? Treat yourself by taking a walk to your local cafe. And on days when you’re too busy to take a lunch break, set a timer to remind you to stretch or have a little walk around. Sit the right way If you’re spending much of your working life at a desk, it’s important to invest in an office chair that will help you perfect your posture. Choose a chair with lumbar support to ensure your lower back curves to the shape of the chair, and make sure it’s adjusted so your feet are resting on the floor. You should also avoid crossing your legs and try to keep your back straight as much as you can. Doing so will make the hours you do spend sitting as comfortable as possible. Get some exercise Evidence suggests that we need between 60-75 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per day to combat the dangers of excessive sitting – but the more frequent the better. You’ll be glad to hear that this doesn’t mean you have to hit the gym every day. Moderate exercise could be a brisk walk on your lunch break, a light bike ride or even those slightly more exerting cleaning duties, such as vacuuming, window cleaning or mopping the floor.

High Brow Finding the right brow shaping method for your eyebrows. Eyebrows are like a rug in a room: they pull the entire look together. Eyebrows when groomed well can make you look like a movie star, but when groomed badly they transform your face into a gruesome mask. For many years the trend was thin brows - a look which harked back to the silver screen days of the early twenties when cinema sirens like Clara Bow shaved their brows then drew them back on again in a severe pencil line. Buying your first pair of tweezers as a teenage girl was a rite of passage as you plucked and preened your way to eye-watering glory. But now, thanks in part to the likes of Cara Delevingne and Kaia Gerber, big brows are the way to go. The change has brought about a revelation in beauty - an entire industry, almost, created off the furry back of the brow. Dedicated salons are

popping up in department stores across the country as women seek out the perfect look; while every major cosmetic brand now has a range devoted to the facial follicles, from powders, to gels and tints. Got a round face? Go for a high, sharp line, whereas heartshaped faces prefer a straighter look. Open up close-set eyes by elongating your brow with a pencil, whereas wideset eyes suit a softer feathery brow. With eyebrows, basic grooming can be done at home, but those seeking a more permanent solution will be drawn to threading and waxing, with salon treatments well worth the investment. A professional, after all, can give you symmetry and the cleanest of clean lines. So don’t spend your life feeling like a wallflower - invest in a dramatic look for raised eyebrows wherever you go. BROW KNOWHOW: A GUIDE Waxing Compared to plucking and threading, waxing is arguably one of the least painful methods of

eyebrow sculpting as the warm wax soothes the skin, and you only need a few applications to achieve the perfect brow. This method is especially useful if you want a strong, sculpted arch, though bear in mind skin can be red and tender for a few hours afterwards. Results last up to one month. Threading An ancient technique which originated in India, threading is a straightforward process which involves a professional beauty therapist using two cotton lengths of thread to drive the hair from the follicle. One benefit of threading is that it is completely natural, requiring no chemicals, and is therefore ideal for those with sensitive skin. It also provides a clean result as the finest of hairs are removed with results lasting for three to four weeks. Tinting If you have hair that is on the fairer side you may be frustrated at being unable to obtain that big brow va va

voom, which is why tinting could be a great option for you. Working alongside your chosen treatment to remove the brow hairs, dye is applied to your eyebrows for a few minutes and then gently removed with a cloth and can create astonishing results. Affordable enough to top up between waxing treatments and as subtle or as bold as you like – be sure to have a frank discussion with your clinician – just be prepared to have a skin test before your first treatment. Plucking If visiting a salon is not for you, there is nothing wrong with plucking your eyebrows at home. By investing in a decent pair of tweezers and some brow stencils you can achieve the look you desire. This also a

Nobody likes paying more for things, but inflation may be a particular problem in 2022. Here’s what it could mean for your finances. Why is it increasing? The Bank of England has forecast inflation could regularly hit 4% or higher in 2022. That’s partly because some of the suspected causes of recent price rises may be here for some time. This includes: higher oil and gas prices (driven by worldwide demand) that affect manufacturing; a shortage of staff in lorry driving and hospitality pushing up wages; and supply-chain problems such as global shipping slowdowns and silicon chip shortages. The fact that it’s manufacturing costs rather than consumer demand for specific products may affect the way shoppers experience this inflation. It’s likely they’ll find everything seems a little pricier, rather than particular items suddenly feeling shockingly expensive. That could mean the squeeze of incomes – especially with National Insurance rising in April - is a little tighter.

Not just spenders Savers and investors may also notice the difference. A 4% inflation rate exceeds all but the most attractive savings rates on offer, meaning savers lose buying power over time. (Though savers are still better off than those not making any interest.) That could incentivise some people with spare cash to move to riskier investments in the hope of a better return. Effect on pensions Rising inflation has consequences for pensioners, beyond increasing prices. The ‘triple lock’ means the state pension rises each year by whichever is higher: rises in average earnings, inflation from the Consumer Price Index, or 2.5 percent. A prolonged spell of inflation above 2.5 percent could mean bigger pension rises. Effect on mortgages Perhaps the biggest concern for many consumers is how inflation could affect their mortgages. Until the financial crisis of 2008, central banks and governments traditionally used higher interest rates as a way to bring down excessive inflation. The theory was simple: higher interest payments meant homeowners had less money to spend in the shops, meaning retailers couldn’t get away with too many price rises. Since 2008, however, central banks have tended to concentrate on keeping rates as low as possible so that people have spare money to spend and help keep the economy moving. Another argument against rate rises is that the current inflation doesn’t appear to be the result of consumers having too much money, but rather goods being more expensive to produce. That means interest-rate rises might not have that much effect and could even cause problems with consumers cutting back on purchases of nonessential goods. On the other hand, the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (which sets interest rates in the UK) may conclude rate rises are its last resort against excessive inflation. That means existing borrowers, those coming to the end of fixed term deals, and those planning to take out a mortgage for the first time, should all build some extra slack into their calculations and make sure they could cope with any increase in their monthly repayments.
