Hello once again, and welcome to your handy local guide. As we get closer to Christmas, I’m sure many of us are looking forward to a very different one than we had last year. Because of the restrictions that were in place, I remember I drove for just over an hour to spend an hour with my daughter in a cold garden, then home again. This one, the whole family will be able to get together again. In recent months, I’ve been working to refresh the articles in the magazine. This starts this month with the lovely Alan Titchmarsh who now will be writing our gardening articles, and next month, there will be more famous names writing for us. I’d love your feedback. Normally the Christmas edition of the magazine has the details of many Christmas fairs taking place in the area. There aren’t so many this year as there normally is but on 4th December, there will be a Christmas Market in Ruthin Gaol which I’m sure will be wonderful. Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Don’t forget that we have a very good selection of independent shops in Ruthin and Denbigh. And during the numerous lock-downs, many of these shops have expanded what they sell, so please, check out local first. I’m sure that you’ll find unique things that you won’t find on the likes of Amazon. Well, that’s all for this year. Wishing you a very Happy Christmas from the team. The next edition will be with you just after Christmas.

Christmas is going to be very different this year and your help is needed more than ever before. Can you help the North Wales Superkids toybox appeal, please? Through no fault of their own, things like financial problems, ill health and domestic violence will mean, for one reason or another that many children will wake up on Christmas morning with no presents. You can help change that. Since 1999, Margaret Williams has been trying to change that. She set up the charity – North Wales Superkids (NWS) after retiring from many years working in social services with vulnerable families, seeing first-hand the problems families faced every year, she decided to form the group as

the need was still there. The organisation gives these children presents that have been donated by members of the public through its Toybox appeal. It receives no direct funding from government and relies entirely on volunteers and peoples generosity plus the occasional small grant and monetary donations from businesses and individuals. When Margaret first started North Wales Superkids, she used to hand out presents to around 150 children. That figure has now grown to over 1,700 in 2020 meaning over 15,000 presents

have to be found for children aged between one and eighteen years old across North Wales. Numbers are rising year after year and more families need the help of NWS at Christmas. Children have to be referred to NWS by a professional, either through their school, via a health visitor or someone in social services or a public organisation. All children have to be living at home with at least one member of their family. Many different circumstances and situations are taken into account for them to be considered for help.

How you can help? Toys can be dropped off at the following places The Bookshop, MOLD. Tesco, MOLD. Specsavers, MOLD. Aesthetics & Beauty by Jade - Mold. Reid and Roberts Estate Agents, MOLD Costellos Floral Design – Denbigh, and Reid and Roberts Estate Agents, Wrexham Alternatively, with me, Trevor Arnold (editor of the Mold & Clwyd Connection magazines) 16 Parc Alun, Mold. I will then ensure the donations reach North Wales Superkids. If dropping of at my house, please phone 01824 707013 before coming to drop toys off. Alternatively, you can make a cash donation here www.justgiving.com/nw-superkids which will allow the organisation to buy toys from suppliers (often at large discounts) to give to the children. Note: All toys for the Toybox Appeal must be new and in original wrapping only please and need to be appropriate for children from one to eighteen. Please don't gift wrap any toys. It is recommended that gifts with a high value are avoided. Margaret can be contacted directly for donations through the NWS Facebook page www.facebook.com/superkidsnorthwales where more information can also be found.

Style a festive table for delicious meals with family and friends Carefully setting and dressing the dining table for a Christmas meal is part of the ritual of Christmas Day. It is best to plan ahead, consider how to achieve the desired look and what key ingredients are required. The theme can be simple and natural, in muted, neutral colours or sparkly with white and silver, frosting and tinsel. A classic look employs red, gold and deep green, while a modern effect might use pastels or neons. Stick tightly to the theme so it all looks unified.

pile of small presents, a bowl of coloured-glass baubles or a Christmas ornament. If you can hang something above the table, ideas include a selection of greenery entwined around a slim metal frame, a scattering of metallic-paper origami stars, a mobile made from baubles on ribbons hung from a wooden bough, or a simple swirl of fairy lights. Similarly, wreaths, baubles, pine cones, even small wrapped gifts, can be tied to or hung from the backs of wooden chairs for a pretty look. Place mats and napkins are important elements and napkins can be folded or rolled and prettified with additions such as cinnamon sticks, candy canes, mini wrapped gifts, tiny baubles, small wooden stars, ribbons or coloured twine. Finally, add crockery, cutlery and glassware. Use your best set arranged super-neatly: bowls on top of side plates on top of dinner plates; cutlery for all the courses; glasses for water, wine and fizz. The result? A gorgeous, welcoming Christmas table.

If your dining table is not up to scratch, use a tablecloth to disguise scratches, stains and separate tables butted together – plain white cotton or unbleached linen are classics. Decorate with a lace, embroidered or scalloped trim, or opt for a festive all-over Christmas pattern. Perhaps add a slim runner along the table, either of ready-made fabric or with a narrow row of suitable decorations along the table – such as an evergreen garland with pine cones and berries, micro lights, tea lights in saucers, lanterns with candles, or floral displays. An alternative to a runner is a centrepiece, perhaps a classic wreath with candles, an arrangement of fresh flowers and foliage, or containers with Christmas bulbs. Other variations are a grouping of lanterns or pillar candles, a

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about getting our youngsters involved in gardening projects. I started gardening when I was nine or ten. I made a little greenhouse, tidied edges, mowed the lawn and sowed seeds, which then came up. When I had that little bit of success, it emboldened me to take cuttings and do more, and it all went on from there. To be honest I was obsessed with all things nature - frogs, toads, insects… and the garden is the nearest bit of natural history to us, so I always felt comfortable there and I still do, although I’m not sure the young generation have quite the same connection with the outdoors. In recent years I’ve worked with the Royal Horticultural Society in campaigns for school gardening, and we’ve had over 30,000 schools involved. Particularly at primary level if we can, literally, sow the seed when children are young, get them connected with the earth rather

than disconnected and fearful, it will mean we are investing in the future custodians of the landscape. To me, it’s vitally important we pass on our joy and knowledge. When I was a boy, Percy Thrower presented a programme called Gardening Club on a Friday night – this was way before Gardener’s World. He, along with a junior schoolteacher of mine, Harry Rhodes – who used to sell cacti at the church bazaar – were great inspirations. Indeed, my first plants came from Harry. Before he died, he saw me building a career, and one of life’s great

flame. I’m now doing what Percy and Mr Rhodes did. Gardening is also a really emotive and emotional place to be. A garden now can seem like much the same as a garden 100, 200, 300 years ago; and those of us of a certain age can recall with real fondness those smells and sensations of outdoors from when we were young kids. I was asked recently what gardening tool I would take with me to a desert island, and it would be my grandfather’s spade (although if I could smuggle on a sharp pair of secateurs I would!). Every time I pick up the spade it takes me straight back to gardening with my grandfather on his allotment – all the

delights was knowing that Harry witnessed this little lad he had encouraged to garden getting on, and doing alright. It was an unusual thing for a small boy to be interested in, therefore when you see a young gardener showing a keen interest, you always want to fan the

sensations and emotions are still there. Of course as you get older, the way you use a garden changes. Just as when I was a boy it was a place of discovery and play, now it’s more a thing of art, beauty and quiet contemplation. Although I have quite a busy, active life, I can’t be outgoing all the time - I do need moments to myself, and gardening keeps me sane. A friend of mine said my garden was a wonderful escape, and I said ‘yes,

but it’s an escape to reality!’ This is real. When I wake up it’ll still be there and it’ll be growing, God willing, long after I’ve gone. I like that kind of permanence, that continuity - it gives me a sense of achievement having created something, but also a kind of inner peace. What undoubtedly links my present self with that nine-year-old version of me, is stimulation, and that has never changed in all the years I’ve spent outdoors planting this, trimming that. And that’s what’s there for the younger generation. That’s why I feel we should do our utmost to engage young people in the glory of our gardens and outside spaces. With all the other distractions they have nowadays, it feels more important than ever.

Ruthin Town Council Since becoming Mayor of Ruthin in May it has been a surprisingly busy time for me and Ruthin Town Council. As guidance and restrictions regarding Covid-19 have changed on a fairly regular basis, a period of trial opening hours, hires, exhibitions and consultation events has happened at The Old Courthouse, which has proved very popular. We recently made a donation to Clwb Rygbi Rhuthun. You might think looking at a price tag would be simple enough, but it’s not always as clear as it seems. When you see a special offer or a sales reduction, you have the right to certain information to help you make a informed decision about whether it’s good value. The main law covering sales prices is the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations, which says any price promoted as a ‘sale’ or ‘special offer’ must also list the original price. Usually this should be the price charged immediately before the sale started. The seller must have charged this price for a ‘meaningful’ period, usually at least as long as the sale lasts. This means shops can’t simply put a dress on sale for £200 for one day, then sell it at £50 and bill it as being 75% off. One thing to watch out for is when the seller compares the sales price with a ‘recommended retail price’ (RRP). This is usually allowed as long as it’s clear this is the case, even when the seller concerned has never charged that price themselves. VAT INCLUDED When sellers offer goods to consumers, they must always list prices including any VAT that applies. Sellers can only list prices excluding VAT when marketing directly to businesses and even then they must make it very clear they have done so. Listed prices must always include

any charge that is compulsory rather than an optional extra: for example, car dealers can’t add on a ‘hidden’ fee for number plates. HAGGLING With all prices, there’s no legal reason you can’t offer a lower price. You have the same rights to haggle in Harrods as you do at a car-boot sale, though not always with the same likelihood of succeeding! If you negotiate a discount, you still have the same consumer rights to return a faulty product or one that’s not as advertised. The seller might exclude the deal from their normal returns policies if you change your mind, though they’ll need to agree this with you before you buy. DISTANCE SELLING Whatever price you pay, whether ‘on sale’ or not, your consumer rights are unaffected. You still have a legal right to a refund if goods are faulty, not as described or not fit for their stated purpose. You can also ask for a repair or replacement, but that’s entirely your choice. The only exception is if the price reduction was because of a flaw the seller told you about, such as a scuff mark or missing instructions. Where sales can come into play is the retailer’s own policies that go beyond your legal rights. Many sellers will offer you store credit or a refund when the goods are fine and you’ve simply changed your mind. Sellers can exclude sale goods from this policy, though they should make this clear in advance.

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me… a calendar packed with beauty goodies… Beauty advent calendars are hot news right now, so there are plenty to choose from. Most of our top picks just cover the twelve days running up to Christmas Day, so if you’re reading this mid-month, it’s not too late to treat a friend (or yourself)…

The best for make-up lovers

Benefit’s The More the Merrier, 12 Merry Days of Makeup Calendar, £58.50 from Boots

Benefit’s calendar is without a doubt one of the prettiest on the market, and highlights some of the brand’s hero products. There are four mascaras, an eyeliner and two face primers, along with an eye pencil, bronzer and other goodies.

The best for tweens

Disney’s Minnie Mouse 12 Days of Bath & Body, £20 from Superdrug

Tween beauty queens and Disney fans alike will love this cute advent calendar. It’s full of pampering treats, including bath salts, a lip balm, body wash, body lotion and hand cream. (Plus, it’s better for their teeth than the traditional chocolate-filled calendars...)

The best if you love a bargain

Dove Gently Nourishing Calendar, £20 from Amazon

Proving that you don’t need to splash out to make someone’s day, Dove’s new calendar includes two fullsized Dove products, plus four miniatures and six other gifts. The focus is on spa-worthy pampering, so you’ll find goodies such as Dove’s Relaxing Body Wash and Essential Nourishment Hand Cream, alongside cleansing pads, a multi-charge cable and hair bobbles. The best for men

24 Grooming Essentials in Support of Macmillan Calendar, £85 from Boots

My partner is seriously impressed with this calendar. There’s a good range of products from some of Boots’ most popular brands. Behind those little blue and black doors, you’ll find everything from a No.7 Men’s Protect & Perfect Intense Serum to Ted Baker body washes. Most toiletries are a generous 50ml. There’s also a pair of nail scissors, as well as tweezers and other essentials. Plus, £2 from every calendar will be donated to Macmillan to help support people with cancer.

The best for blowing the budget Bobbi Brown’s 12 Day Advent Calendar, £125 from www.bobbibrown.co.uk

While the price is rather eye-watering, Bobbi Brown’s first ever advent calendar is actually pretty good value for money. If you bought the products separately, they’d cost you an extra £100. The luxe-looking box reveals an array of Bobbi Brown’s bestsellers, including the everin-demand Shimmer Brick in Bronze, the Extra Lip Tint in Bare Pink, the Vitamin Enriched Face Base and the Smokey Eye Mascara.

Soap & Glory’s 24 Days to Prep into Xmas Advent Calendar, £42 from Boots

The best for personalising Can’t find anything that’s quite right? Why not create your own calendar? Individually wrap and number small gifts and pop them in a gift box or cotton shopping bag. Head to the travel toiletries aisle for gifts or look for bargain gift sets to split. You could also add non-beauty gifts, like a mini scented candle, chocolates and stationery.

With summer well and truly behind us, many of us will already be missing the feeling of sun on our skin and sand between our toes. Sigh. You don’t need to wait until summer to get your fix of sun, sea and sand. Now that the world’s starting to open up again, there are destinations across Europe that are welcoming British tourists with open arms. From the Mediterranean paradise of Greece’s sparkling shores to the sun-drenched Canaries, here are some of the best islands to escape to this winter. The Canary Islands, Spain If you’re searching for guaranteed winter sun close to home, the Canary Islands should be on your radar. This cluster of islands off the coast of northern Africa are famous for their volcanic landscape and year-round sunshine. Lanzarote, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria are the archipelago’s most popular islands, but the tiny isles of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are also packed full of charm. A favourite amongst British tourists, and for good reason, Lanzarote is so much more than a beach holiday. Although it doesn’t fall short on its selection of pristine, white and black-sand beaches, the island’s otherworldly landscape is signposted with walking and cycling trails to guide the more adventurous visitor. Head to Timanfaya National Park and feel the heat of the island’s most famous volcano, or simply relax on the beach and soak up the spectacular scenery: the choice is yours! Just a few miles south of here lies Fuertenventura, the archipelago’s second largest island. Like Lanzarote, the island was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009, and has some of the biggest and best beaches in the Canaries.

The Greek Islands, Greece A cocktail of history, sun-bleached beaches and aquamarine shores, Greece’s islands are nothing short of paradise. From the gorgeous whitewashed houses of Santorini to Corfus’s historic remains, there’s a Greek Island for everyone. Summer can be busy in Greece but you can expect a quieter vibe in the winter. Bars and restaurants will still be lively in the more popular islands but you’ll have more personal space to explore safely and at your own pace. With over 200 islands to choose from, you’re spoilt for choice. Santorini is one of the most popular, thanks to its spectacular scenery and glamorous hotels. Then there’s Crete with its tapestry of ancient treasures, dreamy villages and splendid beaches. Crete also has some of the warmest temperatures during the winter months due to its southerly position. The Balearic Islands, Spain Made up of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, Spain’s Balearic Islands are synonymous with sun, sea and sand. In the winter months you can still expect averages of around 14-16°C and plenty of sunshine. Mallorca is by far the largest of the four, and also the most popular. With its postcard-worthy beaches washed by turquoise sea and strewn with hidden coves, it’s easy to see why! Its capital and historical heart, Palma, is worth a visit; filled with markets, pretty churches and galleries, it’s also known for its up-and-coming drinking and dining scene. Menorca, Mallorca’s teeny neighbour, is perfect if you’re looking to escape the crowds. Its beaches are some of the loveliest in the Mediterranean and the beautiful green countryside makes it perfect for cool afternoon strolls in the sunshine.

I'M A CELEBRITY RETURNS TO GWRYCH CASTLE

The Most Popular Castles in Wales Revealed

W

ales had well over 600 castles throughout history, and more than 100 are still standing as ruins or restored buildings today. Many of the most beautiful castles in Wales were built by Welsh Royal dynasties, and the biggest ones were erected by Normans following their invasion of 1066. Data analysis from Google searches of over 120 castles has revealed the country's most popular one. Research from the Welsh handmade gifts marketplace Made In Cymru has found that Gwyrch Castle in North Wales is the most googled castle in Wales. Built in 1812, internet users searched for the castle 90,500 times in the last month on Google. It has become more popular recently due to the ITV programme “I'm a celebrity” relocating there again for this year’s series. The castle itself is a Grade 1 listed country house, and its design was one of the first attempts to recreate medieval

architecture in Europe. It stands in 250 acres of gardens and grounds and has extensive views over former parkland including a deer park and the Irish Sea. The second most searched for castle is located in the same county. Conwy Castle was searched a total of 33,100 times. The castle sits on the north coast of Wales, close to the mouth of the river Conwy, yet it is enclosed by the Great Orme peninsula and boasts a backdrop of the mountains of Snowdonia. South Wales's most popular castle is located in the country's capital, Cardiff with 22,200 monthly searches on Google. Cardiff Castle is one of Wales’ leading heritage attractions and a site of international significance. Located within beautiful parklands, the Castle has nearly 2,000 years of history just waiting to be explored. The least popular castles in Wales, with no Google searches at all last month, include: Bettws Newydd, Castell Arnold,

Dingestow Castle, Llanfair Kilgeddin Castle, Castell Troggy, Llanvair Discoed Castle, Pen y Clawdd Castle, and Trellech Castle. The counties of Wales with the most castles searched on Google include: Carmarthenshire, Denbighshire, Gwynedd, Monmouthshire, Pembrokeshire, and Powys. A spokesperson for Made In Cymru said: "Covid restrictions have meant that the UK population has needed to look closer to home for their holiday fixes over the last year and as a whole, staycations in Wales have become more popular with the search term ‘Wales holidays’ experiencing a huge 70% increase in searches over the last five years. With a vast array of castles across the country, holiday makers will not be disappointed with the views” Michael Gwynne Made In Cymru www.madeincymru.com info@madeincymru.com

Books make great presents, especially when you can borrow them back in January… Big Panda and Tiny Dragon – James Norbury Fans of The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse, and other illustrated books will love this new offering by James Norbury. Each of the handdrawn illustrations is accompanied by a short conversation between a panda and a dragon, offering words of wisdom we can all learn from. A book to treasure and to dip into time and time again. Freckles – Cecilia Ahern Allegra has made a life for herself in Dublin, working as a traffic warden with a sideline as an artist’s model. She enjoys the routine and the rules, but she’s in Dublin for a reason and needs to pluck up the courage to see her mission through. A chance encounter with an angry driver makes Allegra re-evaluate her life and gives her a new purpose. A light-hearted, humorous tale with some darker undertones, Freckles is sure to appeal to a range of readers. The Exiles – Christina Baker Kline Buying for a fan of historical fiction? Exiles is a solid choice. Several characters’ lives become entwined when pregnant Evangeline is sentenced to hard labour in Australia in 1840. On the ship, she meets teenage Hazel. Meanwhile, Mathinna is faced with losing her family and indigenous community when the governor and his wife decide she needs ‘refining’. A rich, multi-layered story with some shocking plot twists, The Exiles is the perfect book for curling up with on Boxing Day. All In – Billy Jean King Former tennis pro Billy Jean King famously defeated Bobby Riggs in what would become known as the ‘Battle of the Sexes’. Since then, King has fought many more battles, from striving to be taken seriously as a female athlete to campaigning for LGBTQ+ rights. Her long-awaited autobiography also reveals the more personal challenges King has overcome, from an eating disorder to near-bankruptcy. A must for tennis fans and autobiography lovers. Ottolenghi Test Kitchen: Shelf Love – Yotam Ottolenghi and Noor Murad If you’re buying for someone who loves poring over recipe books, you can’t go wrong with Ottolenghi. For his latest book, Ottolenghi has partnered with head chef Noor Murad. The result is a book packed with recipes to help home cooks to impress with less stress. The recipes are also adaptable, so the reader can bring their own twist to a dish or use up leftovers. Just make sure the person you’re buying for promises to make you the Upside-Down Lemon, Maple and Vanilla Pudding… The Replacement – Melanie Golding A delicious thriller for a reader to sink their teeth into on a cold winter’s night, The Replacement centres on Ruby and her sister, Joanna. The book starts as Ruby claims a seemingly abandoned child as her own. Soon after, police detective Joanna is called to investigate the attempted murder of Ruby’s neighbour. Elements of folk lore and mythology are woven into the story, adding a unique twist to a familiar genre. By Kate Duggan

After-school tutoring can be an invaluable part of a child’s education. A tutor can offer support in areas that your child might struggle with, such as maths or English, or help your child to further improve in subjects that they already excel at. Tutoring is also available in subjects that your child’s school might not offer, e.g. Mandarin and philosophy. You can appoint a tutor at any time in your child’s education, but tutoring can be particularly valuable in the run-up to exams, such as GCSEs or the 11-plus. As well as helping with subjectspecific knowledge, tutoring can be useful if your child suffers from exam-related anxiety or if they’re not used to sitting tests. The one-to-one basis of tutoring means your child can learn at their own speed, rather than being led by the wider needs of the class. It also allows extra time for questions or diving deeper into a subject. Tutors usually come to your home, although some operate out of an education centre. Many also offer video tutoring, which is helpful if you’re searching for a tutor in a less common subject. Choosing a tutor After-school tutoring can feel like a punishment. Few children want to add more studying to their weekly timetable. So look for a tutor who will be able to build a good rapport with your child. Not only is your child likely to learn more, they’ll

also be happier and will put more effort into their learning. A good tutor should help to increase your child’s confidence in a subject and, ideally, boost their enjoyment for learning. Before committing to a tutor, you’ll want to check references, qualifications and ID. Finding the right tutor Ask your child’s school if they have any recommendations, and put the word out in your friendship circle that you’re looking for a tutor. You may also want to register with sites such as www.firsttutors.com, which helps to connect private tutors with parents. Some of these sites check the IDs and references of the tutors they promote, which gives you additional peace of mind. The cost of tutoring A tutor’s hourly rate will depend on a number of factors, including their experience, location and what subject your child needs help with. In most cases, you’ll pay between £20 and £40 an hour for an experienced tutor. If your child is at primary school, a tutoring session will generally last for no more than an hour. An A-level tutoring session might be as long as 2.5 hours. Safety Tutors don’t have to be DBS checked, but it’s wise to choose one who has been. A parent or guardian should also be present during every tutoring session.

It’s only relatively recently that we have had year-round availability of fresh produce. But more than any other time of year, Christmas is when we love tradition and these are some of our favourites.

Potatoes A 2020 survey by Asda put potatoes as the most popular Christmas food, although we are used to eating them all year round. The edges of floury potatoes are the bits that go crispy, so Maris Piper is best but King Edward or Desiree are also excellent. Just don’t go for a waxy potato – that won’t work at all.

Cranberries Turkey without cranberry sauce? Unheard of! Most people buy the ready-made sauce in jars for their meal, but you could try making your own. Otherwise cranberries can be swapped for raisins, used in bread pudding, or the feature ingredient in sweet baked breads and cakes. Chestnuts Although you probably won’t be roasting your chestnuts on an open fire as the song goes, they make a regular appearance at Christmas. They bring a caramelised nutty flavour to sprouts, Christmas puddings, turkey stuffing, desserts and more. Unlike other nuts, chestnuts have a high starch and water content but low protein and fat levels.

Satsumas and Tangerines Bright citrus fruits bring fresh colour to the table in winter and satsumas and tangerines are at their seasonal peak in early winter, albeit we don’t typically grow them in the UK. Brussel Sprouts Some love them, others think they are a form of punishment! But Brussel sprouts peak in popularity in December. Part of the problem for the haters is the perception that sprouts are very bitter, but British farmers have modified their crops to ensure most varieties they grow now are sweeter and milder – maybe this year it’s time to give them a second chance.

Parsnips There’s a reason we associate parsnips with Christmas dinner – it’s prime season for them. They can be boiled just as carrots are, being of the same family, but more often they’ll be roasted until the flesh starts to caramelise and served with any roast dinner.
