Hello once again, and welcome to the latest issue. With the cost of everything going ever higher, it’s more important than ever to try to use local companies. Often, this will result in lower costs for the customer if a trades-person hasn’t had to travel a long way to do a job with the price of fuel being what it is. That’s where this magazine can really help. Most of our advertisers are local to the area. As the weather begins to warm up, many people and organisations will be planning events to take place through the summer, especially with the Queens Platinum Jubilee this year. I know from personal experience that it take a lot of effort to plan and organise these events so it’s vital that as many people as possible know about them in advance so that they visit them. That’s where this magazine can help. It’s as it’s delivered to over 7500 local homes each month. That’s a lot of potential families that might visit any event, so please, can you help me out? I would love to help highlight these events but I need people to get in contact to let me know about them. So, if you know anyone making plans, please ask them to get in touch. If an event is non profit, it won’t even cost them to have their event featured in the magazine. See you next month Trevor

Create a restful retreat by combining a great bed with the ideal mattress and sumptuous linens. Choosing a bed The most popular bed base is a simple divan frame – look for examples with side drawers, or ‘ottoman’ divans where the mattress lifts to access storage beneath. The alternative is a bedstead, generally of wood or metal, either modern and minimal, or traditional, such as a fourposter, a ‘sleigh’ bed or Victorian-style cast iron. Disturbance from a partner (or children) is a cause of sleeping complaints, so buy as big a bed as you can afford that will fit comfortably into the room. All about mattresses The best sprung mattresses are ‘pocket’ sprung, in which a large number of small springs work independently, adjusting to the body and eliminating ‘roll-together’. Springs in calico pockets, nested in a honeycomb pattern and centre tied with linen cord indicate a high standard, as do quality ticking, hand side stitching and sturdy handles. Fillings include cotton, wool, coir, foam and horsehair, with added mohair, cashmere and silk at the luxury end of the market. Tufted construction is considered better than quilting.

Combining sustainably sourced wood and natural rattan, this French-style bed features cabriole legs and hard-carved motifs. Montgomery rattan bed, £2,650, The French Bedroom Company: 01444 415 430; frenchbedroomcompany.co.uk.

The relatively new market in non-sprung mattresses includes latex, foam or gel mattresses that are often inexpensive. Warmer than sprung mattresses, they mould to the sleeper’s shape and are reputably good for sufferers of allergies and joint pain. Perhaps the ultimate solution is a combination mattress, offering the support and comfort of springs with a non-sprung top layer. Consider adding a mattress topper for extra comfort and to extend mattress life. Comfortable pillows Down, feather, wool, latex, memory foam, synthetic down and hybrid are all options for pillows – as are cooling pillows, anti-snoring pillows, sleep apnoea pillows, pregnancy pillows and adjustable pillows. It’s simply personal preference, provided your pillow supports your neck and keeps your spine aligned in a neutral position. Experts recommend replacing pillows every one to two years, though a good quality pillow protector may help with longevity. Launder pillows regularly. Gorgeous bedlinens Pure linen has excellent breathability, a cool, crisp touch and gets softer as it ages. Silk is highly breathable, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. Cotton is the most popular choice, with pure Egyptian cotton considered the finest. Finally there’s easy-care, a 50:50 mix of cotton and polyester.

This slender canopy bed makes a statement without seeming overbearing. Luna Canopy king-size bed, £1,195, Cox & Cox: 0330 333 2123; coxandcox.co.uk.

8

A set of white bed linen is a classic choice and complements every scheme, and need not be completely plain. Add an eye-catching bed cover, perhaps a throw and some bed cushions, for a gorgeous layered style with a comfortable feel and appealing look.

Life insurance may feel both baffling and daunting, but it’s a key step towards financial security for many people. These are the most important things to know when deciding whether it’s right for you and which policy to choose. The most important question is what you want the life insurance to achieve. With most forms of insurance, it’s simply a case of covering costs or replacing something that’s lost, stolen or damaged. With life insurance, you’re commonly looking to replace your income.

Depending on your financial goals, this could be a set number of years, the remaining term of your mortgage or until your planned retirement date. These policies are usually cheaper that whole-oflife policies. Once the term ends, you stop making payments and the policy will never pay out.

That means it matters whether you are the sole ‘breadwinner’ in your household, you share financial responsibilities, or you have no dependents (in which case life insurance usually makes little sense). It also matters whether you simply want to maintain an income for your family after you die or if you are concerned with specific expenses, such as a mortgage or university costs for your children.

If you go for a term policy, you need to decide how the payout level changes over time. The most basic option is a ‘level’ policy that simply pays a fixed lump sum on your death. A variation of this means the payout amount goes up each year during the term, in line with inflation.

Those factors will help you make the biggest decision: whether to get a whole-of-life policy or a term policy. The former means that, as long as you keep up the payments, the policy pays out when you die. These policies tend to work out more expensive, both through higher payments and because you’ll be paying in for longer. It’s usually taken out by people who want to be sure to cover funeral costs, or want their heirs to be able to pay an inheritance tax bill without having to sell the family home. With term policies you pay premiums and are eligible for payouts during a fixed period.

In contrast, a decreasing policy means the payout amount falls each year during the term. That makes premiums lower and is most suitable when you want the life insurance to clear your mortgage if you die. The falling payout reflects the fact your outstanding mortgage debt will also fall over time. Whether you get whole-of-life or term insurance, you need to decide whether to get a single or joint policy, for example with your spouse or partner. A single policy is straightforward: the payout goes into your estate and is distributed in line with your will. With a joint policy, the default set-up is that when (or if) one of the two policyholders dies, the payout goes to the other policyholder. The policy then ends with no further premiums or payouts.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the advent of spring, and how our gardens are beginning to open back up again. There is something about spring that just feels like the world is alive and fertile and rich again. You can usually sense it on a particular day – that day when you can smell the season has arrived; when you see those first shoots breaking on an apple tree branch or a hawthorn hedge.

Where the garden is concerned, there are a few basics to look on and check you need to remind yourself of your plot in terms of sunshine and shade, and its capabilities. Remember, poor soil isn’t a barrier - you can grow all kind of things in tubs and pots and troughs. And just because what you have may be small, it doesn’t mean it’s hard to find things to grow in it. It’s easy to grow salads in a small space, or tomatoes in summer. Even dwarf fruit in large pots. No, you won’t be self-sufficient, but you know that you grew it.

It’s like all those months of dampness, coldness and struggle have just flitted away on the breeze – the world feels like a different place. And as a gardener you always have a little moment in February when you think maybe this year it won’t happen, but it always does, and I love it when the first green haze comes across the horizon. Of course, that’s the signal to formulate plans and consider the things you want your garden to represent this year, and that’s very exciting. A big part of that is anticipation, which is an underrated commodity. People want everything instantly now because they are able to go into a supermarket and have what they want, when they want it. I quite like looking forward in life, I enjoy anticipation because, of course, when it does happen, it’s that much more enjoyable.

Personally, I’m looking forward to the first sight of asparagus in April. And from this point forward, there will be something new poking its head out every few weeks – the garden is like a theatre production playing out in front of you as things gradually come into their natural season… from winter snowdrops through to daffodils, then tulips, summer strawberries into autumn raspberries. It’s all there in front of you, so make the most of your garden this year by planning for each month now.

Is your lawn looking like it needs some TLC? It’s probably full of “THATCH” Thatch is a dense mat, in your lawn. An accumulation of roots, stems and grass clippings between the soil and the visible green vegetation. Often several inches thick, thatch prevents the penetration of oxygen, fertilizers and water down into the soil where they are needed. This prevents Oxygen, fertilizers and water from reaching the grass roots. It also creates a breeding ground for fungus and insects that destroy a lawn. Every time you mow that lawn, more thatch builds up, creating a dense barrier to the nutrients your lawn needs.

We have the solution !

A Scarifier quickly and easily removes the tha tch build-up allowing oxy gen, water and nutrien ts to reach the root system giving a healthy lookin g lawn. Spring and Autumn is the best time to car ry out the power raking bef ore you fertilize, the n watch as your lawn grows healthier and more beautiful than ever. Jozsef Vass has been shovelling the overgrown pavement on the road from Ruthin to Llanfair to help the community when the county council wouldn’t. He’s selflessly given up many hours of his time in all weathers to clear the path and make it safe to use after seeing others struggle to use it. A lot of the time, he has been on his own though he has had a couple of volunteers help him a few times. His actions even shamed Denbighshire County Council into completing to work.

Jozsef has also been fundraising to help children and charities in Kenya. His Facebook page “Grab a shovel” documents his charity and voluntary work. If you would like to donate to help , you can find more details and donate here:www.gofundme.com/f/save-lucyschildren-institute

Thank you for making a difference, Jozsef

As well as the path clearance, Jozsef can often be seen litter picking, helping to make Ruthin a nicer and safer place to live.

Would you like to nominate a Local Hero? If you know a local person, any age, who’s efforts need to be recognised and thanked, please email trevor@clwydconnection.co.uk or write to Local Hero, 16 Parc Alun, Mold, CH7 1LQ

The Comfort Book Matt Haig Author Matt Haig has been very open about his struggles with depression. His latest book is a collection of sayings, thoughts and recollections that offer comfort when times are hard. Many of us find it difficult to focus when we’re feeling down, anxious or burnt out. With The Comfort Book, you can just flick through and read the quote that catches your eye. That might be a story snippet, a list, music recommendations or a recipe. Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention Johann Hari We often berate ourselves for spending too much time scrolling through social media or getting distracted when we should be concentrating. Johann Hari explains why the inability to focus is not a personal failing – it’s an all-too-common side effect of modern life. Crucially, he also shares science-backed advice to help you reclaim your ability to focus. Good Vibes, Good Life Vex King Stuck in a rut and not sure how to move forward? In Good Vibes, Good Life, Vex King gives practical and inspirational tips for tackling negative thoughts, improving self-esteem and finding the motivation to make positive changes. Ultimately, his goal is to help you to both love yourself for who you are now and to make the changes that will improve your life for the better. Broken (in the best possible way) Jenny Lawson We all need a good belly laugh sometimes. Broken gives you that, plus so much more. As the blurb says, it’s a book about ‘living, surviving and thriving with anxiety’. It’s written like a stream of consciousness in parts, as Lawson shares anecdotes and lessons from her life. Raw, honest, relatable. The Sleep Book Dr Guy Meadows Anyone who struggles to sleep knows the impact it can have on daily life. The Sleep Book isn’t a recent release, but it’s one of the most wellresearched – Dr Meadows has worked with more than 2,000 insomniacs. The result is a five-week plan to solve insomnia, mainly focusing on mindfulness and ACT (‘act and commitment’) therapy. It’s not a magic cure, but the advice is practical and easy to follow. Reflections Holly Willoughby In Reflections, TV presenter Holly Willoughby shares her ‘toolkit’ for living a happier, more connected life. She talks of the rituals, techniques and positive habits that have helped her to reconnect, tackle anxiety and feel more grounded. It’s a deeply personal book – she discusses body image, burnout and other challenges – but it’s not an autobiography. While most of us don’t lead a celebrity lifestyle, there are still many nuggets of wisdom that readers will find useful.

Born Free Exciting outdoor activities that the whole family can find joy in as spring beckons us back into nature. It’s the season where we can approach the outdoors with confidence – where a flicker of the curtains doesn’t bring about nervous shudders and mental images of trudging across Antarctica. Family time, anywhere, is important and valuable, but around nature, and when exploring our surroundings whilst letting the benefits of fresh air immerse our bodies and minds, it can provide some of the very best and most valuable experiences. Here are six suggestions that will be guaranteed to satisfy enthusiastic young minds. Foraging Foraging is a wonderful opportunity to explore the countryside. Even if you don’t eat anything that you find, foraging still opens young minds to the possibility of self-sustainable living and an appreciation of food in its natural setting. There are also an abundance of ‘pick your own’ farms in the UK, which evades the possibility of eating

berries or mushrooms that are not meant for consumption. Outdoor arts and craft Whether gathering shells, pinecones and leaves to create art at home, giving them use of a camera to photograph animals and plants, or even just arming the kids with a plain notebook and some pencils to capture their surroundings, there are many ways in which you can make time outdoors that bit more stimulating for young minds. Treasure hunting Using GPS and a dedicated smartphone app, Geocaching is essentially a global treasure hunt for ‘caches’ – small waterproof containers that are hidden outdoors. Using location coordinates and clues, hunters must hunt out these concealed vessels and upon finding them, either write their name and date of discovery or (in the case of larger caches) swap the trinket within for something else. Crabbing or bug hunting Those lucky enough to live near the seaside or a suitable body of water will want to try crabbing. Using

a line and bait – crabs love bacon! – you can reel in your catch and place it in a bucket for closer inspection before returning it to its briny haven. If you’ve got no water nearby but lots of greenspace, simply go on a bug hunt instead, cataloguing any minibeasts you encounter. Hiking Britain has an abundance of beautiful countryside and you can find plenty of walks to suit your ability in either a guidebook of your local area, or online. It’s always worth having a destination in mind… like a picturesque village or a country pub for much-needed libation, or even a secluded place to sit and eat a picnic. Discovering From castle and monastery ruins, iron age encampments and even disused railway lines, open up your map, see what’s around you, and venture out to explore off the beaten track.

By Solange Hando

On the north-west coast of Sicily, Palermo nestles around a lovely natural harbour looking out to the Tyrrhenian Sea. In this deep-water bay surrounded by mountains, myriad civilisations came and went, each golden age leaving its mark on the city. With its palaces and churches, the capital claims several UNESCO sites, starting with the medieval cathedral mirroring the city’s history over the centuries. Now in neo-classical style, the splendid interior can be complemented by a ‘rooftop walk’ with panoramic views. Other must-sees include the Baroque gem of Gesu Church and the Palatin Chapel, famous for Byzantine mosaics, in the Norman Palace. A former residence of Sicilian rulers, this has been beautifully restored and is the seat of Sicily’s Regional Assembly. Also built for royal pleasure were Cuba and Zisa, superb examples of Norman architecture in Eastern style. But most intriguing perhaps is the Chinese Pavilion, designed in 1799 for the future King of the Two Sicilies. Lord Nelson and his mistress were among the guests. Heritage aside, Palermo has a lot to offer along its tree-lined avenues. There’s luxury shopping in the high street but the heart of town is around Politeama, a favourite place to meet family or

friends on the spacious piazzas that seem to flow into each other. Visitors gaze at the nearby theatres, Garibaldi with its circular colonnade and triumphal arch and Massimo, the largest opera house in Italy, but the locals just like to sit in the shade and watch the world go by. They call it ‘piazza culture’ and this is the time to sip a cool drink on a café terrace or feast on glorious Sicilian ice cream. Yet the prettiest square, they say, is Piazza Pretoria with its monumental fountain festooned in nude classical statues. It’s the highlight in the historic district, an enticing maze of lanes leading to the street markets of Vucciria, awash with melons, peaches, tomatoes, aubergines, herbs, walnuts and more, plus delicious orange juice squeezed on the spot. Potted plants pop up along the cobbles, washing hangs from the balconies and here and there a secret chapel might just take your breath away. One of the best is the Oratorio di Santa Cita, dripping in gleaming white stucco with angels and playful cherubs. Within walking distance, the Botanical Garden invites you to relax among water features, palms, shrubs and some 12,000 species of plants. Most exciting is the giant fig tree with aerial roots, and you might spot the parrots that escaped from Via Giulia, the city’s oldest park, loved for its marble sundial and alcoves in Moorish style. Now you can almost hear the waves as the promenade beckons along the sea, laced in meandering paths and grassland full of wild flowers. Boats glisten in the marina, rigging tinkles and, in the fishing harbour, men mend their nets on a flotilla of blue boats. Then just out of town you will find turquoise water, tingling sand and fragrant hills with fabulous views.

Male Manicures Manicures and pedicures for men are here. It’s estimated that 20% of men now undertake regular manicure and pedicure sessions – that’s a ten-fold increase over the past decade; and it’s a trend that’s continuing to grow. Here’s why treatments are becoming so popular: 1. They improve your hygiene Ever thought about what lurks beneath your toenails? Or the last time you properly scrubbed the soles of your feet? Manicurists are trained professionals who know how to painlessly get all the deep-rooted grime out from under your nails. They’ll also remove dead skin meaning there are fewer places for bacteria to thrive. 2. They have health benefits If you suffer from ingrowing toenails, you’ll know that prevention is better than cure. Pedicurists know how to neatly cut nails so that they don’t become ingrown. Also, removing dead skin keeps calluses, bunions and corns at bay. 3. It actually feels really good Your feet have it tough, and it stands to reason that a soothing treatment, invigorating massage and cooling gels are going to feel wonderful. But the happiness doesn’t end at

your ankles, as stimulating your ‘plates of meat’ boosts your bodies circulation and is stressbusting too. 4. Men undertake tougher physical routines If anyone should be looking to repair and revive digits and toes, it is men. Generally speaking, the female of the species has the less physically demanding tasks, so men should be the ones to step forward, keen to work salvation into hands and feet. 5. Ladies love well-groomed men If you want to make a good first impression when you shake someone’s hand, then a manicure is going to serve you well.

think they head to salons en masse? It’s not because they get some kind of girl-gang discount, it’s because going offers a great opportunity to catch up on gossip and hang out with your besties. This opens up the option for couples to visit the nail salon together; or if really daring, male buddies can go for a pedicure. The rules have changed. 7. The market is ready There are bespoke products ready to go, which are conditioned and formulated for male skin and nails. This means it’s no longer a case that men feel as if they are gate-crashing something reserved solely for the ladies.

The perception that women don’t notice when a man has rough, calloused hands and dirty nails is a false one; and while a certain amount of ruggedness can certainly be attractive, the modern man is certainly more adept and in tune with presentation and perception. 6. It can even be a bonding experience Talking of women, why do you
