Martin Luther King Jr. Outpatient Center

MLK JR. OUTPATIENT CENTER

The hospital known as the Martin Luther King Jr. Outpatient Center, which originally opened in 1972, was closed 35 years later in 2007. The County of Los Angeles successfully negotiated with the University of California to renovate the 35-acre campus and reopen the hospital under administration of the University of California, Los Angeles. This extensive undertaking involved three main components and two projects constructed through multiple phases, totaling more than $350M and includes the Multi-service Ambulatory Care Center (MACC) and Inpatient Tower Renovation (IPT) redevelopment projects. It was delivered utilizing an accelerated design-build construction schedule and designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.

The Inpatient Tower renovation included the demolition and remodeling of interior spaces in several existing buildings, as well as seismic and equipment upgrades to the campus’ central plant. The project also included the construction of a new 20,000 SF Ancillary Building, housing a cafeteria and administrative support functions. The Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center Building involved the construction of a new 130,000 SF center.

Gafcon, Inc. was part of a joint venture to provide the County of Los Angeles with state-of-theart automated project controls and project management software solutions for the Outpatient Center. Our goal was to provide the County of Los Angeles with a comprehensive range of document and project controls support services.

The team worked closely with County staff to define program goals and outcomes to develop an innovative and automated technology platform facilitating collaboration between the design-build team, construction teams, and County staff. The solution also integrated full utilization of building information modeling (BIM) technologies, including a Training Wiki with training videos and procedures manual for improved on-boarding of new team members, as well as a customized reporting dashboard.
