ragment 01. Architectural Fragment Petrus Spronk, 1992 Port Fairy bluestone

Whoa! What happened here? This giant bluestone edifice is reminiscent of the glorious State Library of Victoria, yet it has been swallowed by the footpath!

Victorian artist Petrus Spronk created this imposing work after travels to Samos, a Greek island, where he saw numerous ruins, and where the

mathematician Pythagoras was born.

This dramatic artwork is made of Port Fairy bluestone which is used in abundance in Melbourne. Note the sculpture is a three-dimensional Pythagorean triangle, connecting further to Greece and of course Pythagoras’ theorem. Now, while you unravel your hypotenuse from your kangaroos, ask yourself ‘Can I tick it?’, and we’d say enthusiastically ‘Yes, you can!’. Now have a listen to the classic tune ‘Zorba The Greek’ and get your Greek on!

purse per 02. Public Purse Simon Perry, 1994 Calca red granite, stainless steel Money, money, money…yes, this public artwork is exactly what it says on the tin, a colossal coin purse. Simon Perry’s work is a clear reference to the commercial nature of the area, so if you felt like a spot of shopping then Bourke Street Mall is an opportunity to pull out your own purse! If more pavementpounding sounds like too much for your tootsies right now, then interact with this artwork as Perry intended, and have a seat. Yes, in 1994, the City of Melbourne added “unique and distinctive forms

of street seating” in the pedestrian environment, and The Public Purse was one of these. Now, money doesn’t lead to happiness, but a free Bop-tastic Melbourne Art Walk sure does! While you ponder that, have a listen to this cracking tune all about dreaming of multiplying your moolah and as you peruse this purse, ask yourself, ‘Can I tick it?’, and we’d say positively, ‘Yes, you can!’.

Three Businessmen Who Brought Their Own Lunch: Batman, Swanston & Hoddle Alison Weaver and Paul Quinn, 1993 Bronze ‘Three Businessmen Who Brought Their Own Lunch’ is a life-size, bronze sculpture depicting the three founders of Melbourne. Upon returning to the city with their lunchboxes in hand, Batman, Swanston and Hoddle find themselves surrounded by consumerism, but wasn’t that the intention of developing a city? What do you think? Co-creator Alison Weaver claims that while the men are named and motionless, they are also intended to be anonymous

and to represent being ‘trapped in the perpetual motion of consumerism’. So while you contemplate consumerism’s lack of conscience, and its corrosive and coercive powers over us, consider that at least these three businessmen did bring their own lunch! dog’s out 04. Larry La Trobe Pamela Irving, 1996 Bronze Melbourne artist Pamela Irving was commissioned to create the first sculpture for Melbourne’s Open Air Sculpture Museum. It was intended to celebrate Australian larrikinism.

The statue’s name comes from Irving’s uncle Larry and from Charles La Trobe, the first Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria.

Despite being anchored by 30 cm bolts, Larry was stolen in 1995. Although

the subject of a significant media campaign, the original statue has never been recovered and nobody has been apprehended for the theft. In 1996 a second Larry was reinstalled in the City Square. So while you take a sniff around this much-loved piece of Melbourne art and have a listen to this classic track, ask yourself, ‘Can I tick it?’, and we’d gladly say, ‘Yes, you can!’.

Deborah Halpern, 1988 Ceramic, steel, concrete

Should fashion influence art? Or is art inherently a mirror to fashion? If you’re feeling like this is all getting very philosophical, you would be right. But, in the case of Deborah Halpern’s ‘Angel’, which was commissioned to celebrate colonial Australia’s bicentenary in 1988, and then installed in front of the NGV International, fashion and changing ideas have prompted this eye-catching

artwork to be relocated. Yes, the NGVI did not want to appear out of sync with contemporary thoughts and trends, and so had the sculpture moved to Birrarung Marr in 1996. So, as you saunter slowly around this stunning ceramic structure taking in every tile, ask yourself, ‘Can I tick it?’, and we’d say most sincerely, ‘Yes, you can!’. Now have a listen to this stomping-good song…

You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) Dead Or Alive, 1985

This colossal steel abstract geometric sculpture looks like it is twisting through the air, don’t you think! Ponder this as you encircle the site—you are going round and round in circles—just like a Dervish. Yes, this clever interactive sculpture from prolific Australian artist Clement Meadmore almost makes you do what Dervishes do! A Dervish is a person who follows a branch of Islamic

faith and performs a dance where they spin repeatedly on the spot, leading to an ecstatic trance feeling. Probably not wise to try that right now, but instead, have a listen to Dead Or Alive, and we reckon you’ll feel pretty ecstatic too!

So as you bop your way around this sculpture, ask yourself ‘Can I tick it?’, to which we would reply ‘Yes you can!’.

forward s 07. Forward Surge Inge King, 1981 50mm mild steel, paint Dude, get off my wave! No need to holler that phrase here, you can share these whopping waves with everyone. Yes, ‘Forward Surge’ was classified by the National Trust of Victoria as being of great cultural significance—so we can enjoy it forever! ‘Forward Surge’ can be considered a Modernist artwork, due to the absence of the artist’s hand, such as a brush stroke. Modernist artworks reflect the technological advances of the Twentieth Century, such as steel

fabrication. Finally, this is an abstracted representation of the subject—ocean waves—rather than a realistic one. So dip your metaphorical toes in this metal monument while you rock out to some mighty metal music and ask yourself, ‘Can I tick it?’, and we’d say a resounding ‘Yes, you can!’.

08. Family of Man I and II Cole Sopov, 1983-84 Brass Bonus—two for one! At this stop you can revel in the magnificence of artist Cole Sopov’s duo of dynamic forms.

Sopov was commissioned to create ‘Family of Man I’ and ‘Family of Man II’ for the entrance foyer of the Theatres Building. The semi-abstract quality of the design follows on from the 1960s Melbourne tradition of biomorphic

abstraction, which combined flowing concave and convex shapes with sleek stylised anatomical details, often with an additional overlay of eroded abstracted forms. While you bask in the beauty of these bronze bodies and listen to this anthem for all your beloved ones, ask yourself, ‘Can I tick it?’, and we’d say emphatically, ‘Yes, you can!’.

09. Vault Ron Robertson-Swann, 1980 Steel, paint Ron Robertson-Swann’s ‘Vault’ attracted controversy, public outcry and even some derogatory nicknames causing its relocation, not once, but twice!

As David Hurlston, then NGV Curator of Australian Art, remarked: “People didn’t just dislike Vault, they became passionate in their dislike. Everyone seemed to have an opinion on it.”

So, what do you think? Despite all the negativity directed at his artwork, Robertson-Swann remains upbeat, good-humoured and philosophical

about the public response, having said: “If something new comes into the world it takes a while for taste and sensibility to adjust.” And adjust we have, this sculpture has been settled here and enjoyed by visitors to the ACCA since 2002. As you wander and wonder at these clean lines, intersecting angles and of course—the yellow— ask yourself, ‘Can I tick it?’, and we’d say heartily, ‘Yes, you can!’. Now have a listen to this suitably mellow song reflecting the artist’s frame of mind…

O 10. The Pathfinder John Robinson, 1974 Bronze

U Can’t Touch This MC Hammer, 1990

this guy just can’t let go. Consider how the artist could possibly conceive this form—and spare a thought for the artist’s model! So take a look from all angles and as you contemplate this artwork, ask yourself ‘Can I tick it?’ and we’d say ‘Yes you can!’. While you are marvelling at Robinson’s perfectly rendered form, remember to “Stop, Hammer time!”

Artist John Robinson’s work ‘The Pathfinder’ depicts a hammer thrower frozen in perpetual motion, and straining against the forces of momentum and gravity. As each muscle on this bronze body ripples into action and strains against the weight of the hammer, we realise if it wasn’t for the hammer, this fella would go toppling backwards. Yes, man and hammer are trapped in this moment forever, and try as he might,
