Introduction - Gadsden Arts at 25

Left: Mark Bates, Ellen Bryant, and Zoe Golloway cut the ribbon to open Gadsden Arts in the Bell & Bates Building in 2000; right, Kerri Post, Grace Robinson, Zoe Golloway, Secretary of State Ken Detzner, Malinda Horton, Lucy Harris, and Jamie Maloy celebrate Gadsden Arts’ accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums in 2016.

In September 2019, the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum reached its 25th year as a community-owned service organization. Through Gadsden Arts, hundreds of people from the community have invested time and resources to accomplish something great – to improve quality of life for everyone by fostering understanding and appreciation of art, and to stimulate the local economy. Today, Gadsden Arts is a leading resource for visual art experiences in the Big Bend Region, with an economic impact of over one million dollars annually.

school groups, project partners, and new members from across the region. Our Permanent Collection grew substantially, ArtZone and ArtReach programs brought children and families into the museum, and Gadsden Arts represented hundreds of our region’s artists through 13 of 17 exhibitions and the Fletcher Museum Shop. Gadsden Arts professional staff also grew in an important way, adding Barbara Cushing, an accomplished and knowledgeable Development Officer, to further grow resources to fuel our work.

For 25 years, Gadsden Arts donors have given generously, and volunteers have worked tirelessly to bring art experiences to people of all ages in our community, and from all walks of life. Gadsden Arts has brought people together and brought new experiences to all of us. Larger milestones measure our progress, from redeveloping our iconic Bell & Bates Building and two adjacent buildings, to growing programs across the museum, to earning national accreditation in 2016. Completing a facility expansion in 2018 increased our quality and capacity for service in all areas of the museum.

Gadsden Arts Magazine shares with you our impacts in 2019; highlights of exhibitions, programs and events coming in 2020; and also a snapshot of the plan to continue to move Gadsden Arts forward. Be sure to save the date for our major exhibitions, Eddy Mumma and From Hofmann to Warhol, and the new COLLECT series of events coming this fall.

In 2019, Major Exhibitions like Norman Rockwell in the 1960s and From the Cedar Chest attracted record numbers of visitors,

MISSION: The Gadsden Arts Center & Museum’s mission is to foster understanding and appreciation of the visual arts to improve the quality of life in Gadsden County and the region. The organization works to enhance arts education, provide cultural opportunities, and stimulate economic growth in the community. VISION: A nationally accredited, highly regarded, high-impact arts center and museum with long-term financial and organizational sustainability. GOAL 1. GROW THE IMPACT OF GADSDEN ARTS. Exhibitions are the heart of Gadsden Arts programming. Major Exhibitions interpreted through quality educational programming offer a depth of cultural and historical content, and attract and serve thousands of people of all ages. We recognize the need for more Major Exhibitions in our region and know from recent projects like Florida’s First Highwaymen and Norman Rockwell in the 1960s that everyone, from school children to adult residents to visiting travelers, benefits from these in-depth cultural experiences. Providing accessible Education and ArtReach programs is also central to Gadsden Arts’ mission. Through programs like the ArtZone, Art & Literacy, ArtReach after school, and School Group Tours, Gadsden Arts will continue to bring opportunities for children to interpret and make art. Bringing children into

the museum is also a priority, opening doors for lifelong learning for children and families. GOAL 2: CONTINUE TO INCREASE ANNUAL REVENUE AND SUPPORT FOR GADSDEN ARTS. Gadsden Arts, as an independent, community-owned museum, is fueled by dollars brought in each year through contributions, grant awards, and earned revenues. Continued development of these resources is crucial to fulfilling our mission and having the highest possible impact, and will be accomplished through the addition of a Development Officer and new strategies to grow earned revenues, our donor base, and grant support. GOAL 3: CONTINUE TO DEVELOP LONG-TERM FINANCIAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY FOR GADSDEN ARTS. In the long term, Gadsden Arts will continue to grow and diversify annual revenue streams, build the operating reserve fund from its current six to 12 months operational support, and grow the Gadsden Arts Endowment Trust. (For more information about the endowment, see page 14.) Planning is an ongoing process and we value your input! MAJOR EXHIBITIONS OFFER A DEPTH OF CULTURAL EXPERIENCE Gadsden Arts is a leading venue in the Big Bend Region for local to national scope art exhibitions, and an important community resource for arts education. Our Major Exhibitions offer historically and culturally rich content, presented with a full complement of interpretive programming. They bring to life our experiences as human beings, spanning divides such as time and culture. These are the highest impact programs of Gadsden Arts, drawing thousands of people into the museum each year for enriching experiences.

EDDY MUMMA: COMPELLED TO CREATE Late in life, “Mr. Eddy” Mumma was an isolated shut-in due to complications from diabetes, and over about a decade he created an estimated 800 works of

unique and powerful art. Mumma painted landscapes, ingenious Mumma-style copies of historical works, and hundreds of portraits, and refused to sell them, viewing them as his “companions.” A master of color and composition, Mumma’s highly stylized paintings vibrate with emotion. Mumma’s work is represented in prominent American art museum collections including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the American Folk Art Museum, the High Museum of Art, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Thanks to generous gifts from Calynne and Lou Hill (Tallahassee, FL) and Josh Feldstein (Gainesville, FL), Gadsden Arts has a remarkable 44 Eddy Mumma paintings in the Permanent Collection. This exhibition is curated from the GACM Permanent Collection, the Feldstein Collection, and the Historic Thomas Center Galleries (Gainesville, FL).

FROM HOFMANN TO WARHOL Curated by Gadsden Arts, this exhibition explores the journey of American art through Abstract Expressionism to the oft-considered pinnacle of Modern Art, Pop Art. After World War II, the Western art world shifted to New York, and changing culture brought an explosion of iterations on the abstract theme, such as Post-painterly Abstraction, Washington Color School, Color Field, NeoDada, Hard-Edge Abstraction, and Op Art. American artists moved past the dark expressions of a war-torn world, through broad explorations in art from the expressive use of form and color as an outlet for emotion, to an exploration of “art for its own sake,” and on to embrace the preposterous and the popular with Pop Art. Works will be on loan from the Art Bridges Foundation (Bentonville, AR), Anderson-Brickler Gallery (Tallahassee, FL), Museum of Contemporary Art (Jacksonville, FL), the Samuel P. Harn Museum (Gainesville, FL), and the Florida State University Museum of Fine Art (Tallahassee, FL).

Regional & Special Exhibitions CELEBRATING OUR REGION’S ART AND ARTISTS Over 25 years, Gadsden Arts has grown in celebrating the work of artists and artisans in our community. 2020 brings 12 regional art exhibitions and four special exhibitions in addition to two major exhibitions. A few highlights: Alexa Kleinbard: Twilight in the Garden presents work created by this highly accomplished artist over a span of 35 years. Kleinbard takes the position that we are in and of nature. In this exhibition, Kleinbard addresses the issues surrounding the degradation and destruction of our natural environment in spectacularly beautiful paintings, drawings, and collages from 1984-2019. Vitreous Enamels: the Art of Glass, Metal, and Fire brings together five master enamelists, Kristin Anderson, Chris Hierholzer, Carole Jayne, Mary

Reynolds, and Kathleen Wilcox, each who has devoted 20-30 years to enameling. Creativity in an Uncreative Place showcases artwork made by inmates in Florida prisons, drawing from the collection of David Gussak, Ph.D., Professor for Florida State University Graduate Art Therapy program. The heart of the exhibition presents unique paintings by “The Candy Man,” an inmate who paints with brushes made from his own hair and pigments made from the colored shells of M&M candies, and finishes his works with floor wax. Sharon Hester: Drawn from the Wild presents hyper realistic, colored pencil and graphite drawings by this trained biologist. Hester’s work shows a combination of objectivity and subjectivity - detail and accuracy interconnected with wonder and fascination, scientific inquiry mixed with beauty and mood. See more exhibition information at www.gadsdenarts.org/exhibitions.

Permanent Collection COLLECTION GROWS IN LEAPS AND BOUNDS The Gadsden Arts Center & Museum is a collecting institution, preserving and sharing our cultural history through art. The focus of the Gadsden Arts Permanent Collection is contemporary American Art from the Southeastern United States, with important national or international works also considered. Thanks to the generosity of nine donors, the Collection grew substantially in 2019. 60 works of art were accessioned, bringing the total collection to 172 objects. 54 of these were additions to the museum’s Southern Vernacular Art collection, featuring work by celebrated American artists such as Thornton Dial, Sr., Purvis Young, O.L. Samuels, and Lonnie Holley. Our sincere thank you goes to the following collectors who made gifts of art to the Gadsden Arts Permanent Collection in 2019: Armand and Suzanne Cognetta, Josh Feldstein, Lou and Calynne Hill, Ray Iannucci, Meredith and Elsa McKinney, and Linda Meadows.

THE ARTZONE TURNS 2! February 2020 marks two years of the ArtZone – bringing the joy of creation to over 2,200 visitors. It’s been an exciting two years! Families from Tallahassee, Quincy, Havana, and many from out of town, from 1-year-olds to 90-year-olds, have enjoyed making art together. For school and homeschool students, multiple art projects connect with curricula. Grandparents have made the ArtZone a “must” during grandchildren’s visits. Best of all, families return and bring friends! In 2019, the ArtZone was open 707 hours and offered 20 different art projects, from printmaking, painting, and drawing to exhibition-specific projects like creating your own magazine cover with Norman Rockwell in the 1960s, making a cut-paper collage with Beth Appleton’s Back to the Garden from our Permanent Collection, and creating quilt block designs with From the Cedar Chest: Southern Quilting 1830s to Today. The ArtZone is for everyone, and thanks to our sponsors, the ArtZone is free for ALL visitors. Though geared towards children and families, everyone who comes into the museum can take a minute, an hour, or several hours to relax and create in the ArtZone.

QUILTS HAVE POWER Quilting traditions are important in our community, and this year, we have celebrated quilts in many ways: through the From the Cedar Chest exhibition and the Big Bend Quilt Trail; in quilt projects with campers, visiting schools, in the ArtZone, and out in the community; and, in the Quilts of Valor created to be donated to a veteran in hospice care. Volunteers led by Wendy Adams made possible two Quilt of Valor workshops. Over the summer, Gadsden Arts campers designed complex quilt blocks, including asymmetrical designs, pinwheels, stars, and even an American flag, creating 72 blocks out of patriotic fabrics that were assembled into the Quilt of Valor. In December, 20 adults participated in our Community Quilting Workshop, creating 56 blocks that were put together into another quilt. These programs taught the art of quilting, design principles such as pattern and balance, and collaboration, and offered participants the opportunity to be part of creating meaningful gifts that were given to honor and comfort veterans.

Education & ArtReach brought by Gadsden Arts with art teacher Donna Lowman, and that the students continue to talk about these activities long after they’ve finished. Campers have also expressed their appreciation for Summer Art Camp experiences:

EVERYONE LEARNS IN A MUSEUM When you think “Education” at Gadsden Arts, you might think of programs for children and families. These are very important programs! But Education reaches every aspect of Gadsden Arts, every day. Everyone learns something new at Gadsden Arts - residents, visitors from out of town, volunteers, artists, students, and even staff members. Gadsden Arts shares a world of human experiences through art exhibitions and interpretive programs, and offers opportunities for exploration, self-expression, and creative fun through studio art programs. You can find exciting, engaging programs presented by Gadsden Arts all year long including changing exhibitions in six galleries, talks by artists and curators, guided tours, panel discussions, art trips, and workshops led by visiting artists. Be sure you receive the Gadsden Arts Enews to remain up to date on these cultural experiences. Sign up by emailing grace@gadsdenarts.org.

ART REACHES STUDENTS: THE POWER OF ART FOR CHILDREN Through our ArtReach After School, Art & Literacy School Tours, the ArtZone, and Summer Art Camp, Gadsden Arts programs help children develop visual literacy skills by interpreting and making art. In each of these programs, we’ve been told how important and meaningful these experiences are. Partners have said that after-school students work hard to finish their homework quickly, so that they can enjoy the art lessons

“I like to go to camp because I like to draw my creativity. I like to release my creativity. And I have a BIG imagination!” “This is a once in a lifetime chance to express who I am in art.” “Art camp inspires me to be more positive about myself.” Teachers have also commented on the effectiveness of our Art & Literacy program, in which students spend time in front of each selected painting, discussing the imagery, color, tone, and possible themes. With questions from the docent who guides the conversation, the class discovers the meaning of a work of art as a group, much like they might discover the meaning of a text. One teacher said she saw her students’ eyes light up, making connections between interpreting works of art and reading. During a recent tour with 70 third grade students from Greensboro Elementary School, we were thrilled to find that nearly half of the students had been to Gadsden Arts before, and the teachers planned to bring students again.

The ArtZone provides an important opportunity for children and visitors of all ages to enjoy the simple pleasure of making things and discovering that everyone can create and appreciate art.

MAJOR EXHIBITIONS National scope major exhibitions are the highest impact programs of Gadsden Arts, drawing thousands of people into the museum each year for enriching experiences. Sponsor opportunities currently available for 2020 and 2021 include the exhibitions From Hofmann to Warhol, Afro-Cuban Art, and America’s Everglades: Through the Lens of Clyde Butcher.

AN EVENING WITH THE ARTS An Evening with the Arts is an elegant gala featuring fine dining, great music, a silent auction, and a sold-out crowd at Quincy’s historic Sawano Club which is transformed with a different artistic theme each year. This is a highly visible option for businesses to entertain guests in support of the museum and to meet the friends and leaders of Gadsden Arts. Sponsorships are limited - reserve now for the January 2021 Evening with the Arts.

COLLECT: The Art of Collecting Art NEW! COLLECT is a mission-based fundraiser to support the work of Gadsden Arts, presenting national caliber art along with high-end educational and cultural components that appeal to avid art collectors and people who want to learn more about collecting art.

GADSDEN ARTS ENDOWMENT TRUST

IMPACT FUND FOR MAJOR EXHIBITIONS

The Gadsden Arts Endowment Trust is working for the community every day, supporting facility needs and programs of Gadsden Arts, while ensuring support for our museum in perpetuity. The endowment provides support for the museum’s exhibition programs each year, and for periodic facility needs, such as: • LED Sara May Love Gallery lighting system • Bell & Bates Building TPO roofing • Fire sprinkler system upgrade • Storefront impact and UV protective film

Major Exhibitions, presented with a full complement of interpretive programming, are the highest impact programs of Gadsden Arts, meeting a unique need in our region, and drawing thousands of people into the museum each year for enriching experiences. Resources are needed to plan and schedule these projects several years in advance. Contributions and pledges to the Impact Fund bring a consistent calendar of these culturally enriching projects that benefit everyone.

The endowment is carefully managed by its Board of Directors with a moderate investment policy and a conservative 2.5% spending rate to ensure fund growth over time. Donors may create their own separate Donor-Named Funds within the Gadsden Arts Endowment Trust which are invested along with the endowment, currently valued at $780,000.
