JOURNEY

Words by Gabriel Pe

Alot has changed in the world of fintech since I started writing for Gadgets Magazine. It’s been one of the fastest-moving tech sectors over the past six years, marked by rapid innovation and widespread adoption.

Five years ago, I set out to try to live a cashless lifestyle, spending months relying solely on card payments, e-wallets, and appbased transactions. At the time, cash was still king, and digital payment options were niche, often buggy and inconsistent. What I discovered then was that the infrastructure was already in place, but something was still holding it back.

Cover story

Fast forward to today: digital payments are now widely accepted and deeply integrated into everyday life. This shift was driven by several factors: the pandemic, increased recognition of fintech’s potential, and its seamless incorporation into daily routines.

The growth of fintech solutions, while initially gradual, accelerated dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. With physical distancing a necessity, e-wallets quickly became mainstream. What was once a secondary payment method began sharing the spotlight with cash.

Instant payments and real-time money transfers fueled not just major retail transactions but also everyday exchanges—small loans (utang), wages, and even quick overseas remittances. Government support played a key role, encouraging establishments to adopt e-wallets and other digital payment platforms to minimize physical contact.

Fintech’s Role in a Digital Economy

Fintech companies rose to the occasion, rapidly upgrading their infrastructure and features. E-wallets like Maya and GCash made integration with businesses easier. Banks waived transfer fees to promote cashless transactions, and e-commerce platforms expanded their payment options to encourage digital adoption.

Telcos also contributed to fintech’s growth. The rollout of 5G, which began shortly before the pandemic, provided faster and more stable mobile connections, addressing one of the early barriers to adoption.

The convenience of cashless payments helped cement fintech’s place in everyday life. First-time users during the pandemic continued using these platforms well beyond the crisis.

Beyond e-wallets, Online Lending Apps (OLAs) and micro-financing platforms became lifelines for Filipinos facing financial hardship. OLAs provided quick access to emergency loans, while Buy Now, Pay Later schemes allowed consumers to meet urgent needs without immediate payment.

Fintech and the Government

Government support has been instrumental in sustaining fintech adoption post-pandemic. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) set a target for 50% of retail transactions to be digital by 2023. That goal was surpassed, with digital payments accounting for 52.8% by the end of 2023 and rising to 57.4% in 2024, well above the year’s target.

One major initiative was QR Ph, a unified QR payment system that integrates various digital platforms and e-wallets into a secure, inclusive network.

More recently, the BSP approved the use of mobile NFC payment solutions. Banking apps now support tap-topay transactions in select retail stores using a phone’s NFC connection. GCash has also received approval to implement NFC payments within its app.

The BSP further allowed Apple Pay and Google Pay to operate their NFC payment systems in the Philippines without requiring registration with the central bank. These global platforms bring advanced security and convenience to local users.

Governmental Integration

Beyond the BSP’s initiatives, the broader government has embraced fintech in its operations. From internal disbursements to accepting e-wallet payments for government fees, fintech is helping streamline public services.

Fintech has also been integrated into eGovPH, the central government app designed to consolidate various services. Users can now pay taxes, renew licenses, and even settle traffic violation fees through e-wallets and online banking.

One of the most notable developments is the integration of digital payments into public transportation, including the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and select bus routes— with more expected to follow.

Government adoption of fintech signals that the technology is here to stay. While its current role is largely focused on payments, the possibilities are expanding. Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) are being explored, and cryptocurrency is gradually being regulated as a financial asset.

The future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: fintech will continue to evolve and play a vital role in our increasingly digital economy.

tHe QR CODe ReVOLUtION

At the grocery checkout, in a jeepney queue, or while buying merienda from a street vendor— Filipinos are paying differently these days. Coins and bills still change hands, but more often it’s a phone screen hovering over a QR code or tapping a terminal. Cash is still around, but digital payments are quietly taking over more of our daily transactions.

Why Filipinos Are Scanning Instead of Paying with Cash

Ask anyone why they use it, and the answer’s almost always the same—it’s faster. Students on the run, or parents balancing grocery bags, don’t have time to fumble for coins or wait for change.

But there’s more to it than convenience. QR payments have opened the door for millions of Filipinos who don’t keep a bank account. With just a smartphone and an e-wallet, they can pay jeepney fares, settle electricity bills, or shop online—no need for a passbook or a trip to the bank.

At the center of this shift is GCash, the country’s leading e-wallet. It counts more than 81 million active users and connects with 2.5 million merchants. Some reports even push the figure up to 94 million, which is practically everyone. Chances are, if you’re not using GCash, the person next to you is.

How QR Codes Took Over the Checkout Counter

Fueling this growth is QR Ph, the national QR payment standard. It acts as a universal code that lets different wallets and banks “speak” to one another. Whether you’re paying through GCash, Maya, or another app, scanning a QR Ph code at a store works the same way.

The system is built on EMV technology—the same security framework used for chip-enabled credit cards. Merchants favor it because it’s cheap and easy to set up, while customers like it for its speed, safety, and the peace of mind that comes with not carrying thick wallets of cash.

“Cash won’t vanish overnight. But its role is shrinking fast, as QR codes and NFC slowly redefine the way Filipinos move money.”

Tap to Pay: Taking Cashless Further

QR codes taught people to scan. NFC (Near Field Communication) is teaching them they barely have to lift a finger. This is the technology behind “tap-to-pay”: bring your phone or card close to a terminal, and the payment goes through instantly.

Worldwide, NFC powers Apple Pay and Google Pay. In the Philippines, GCash has introduced its own Tap to Pay, in partnership with Mastercard. For now, it works only on Android phones with NFC support, leaving iPhone users waiting on the sidelines.

Setting it up isn’t rocket science— just switch on NFC, toggle Tap to Pay in the GCash app, and tap at a Mastercard terminal. It works much like a contactless debit card; only this time your phone takes its place.

Users who’ve tried it say the speed is a real advantage, especially in supermarket lines or at train stations. Still, the experience isn’t flawless. Some terminals fail to register the tap, and not every cashier knows what to do when it doesn’t go through. The app also needs to be open and online for each transaction. Even so, the idea of paying with nothing more than a phone tap is a glimpse of what’s coming next.

Apple Pay & Google Pay: Global Players on the Horizon

While GCash is first to bring NFC here, the international players aren’t

far behind. Both Apple Pay and Google Pay rely on tokenization—a system that turns your card details into a one-time code—making transactions safer by design.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) recently clarified that these services can operate in the country without a special license. Because they don’t hold customer funds, they aren’t classified as “payment system operators.” That green light means Apple and Google could enter the local market sooner than expected, giving Filipinos more options— especially for international travel and cross-border shopping.

The Benefits Everyone’s Talking About

Cashless payments aren’t just faster than cash; they feel safer, too. QR Ph payments are verified before they go through, while NFC uses tokenization or one-time codes that make it tougher for fraudsters to break in.

They’ve also opened the door for people who don’t have bank accounts. With an e-wallet, anyone can pay bills, shop, or send money. And to keep users engaged, providers throw in perks like cashback, discounts, and raffle promos—little rewards that make everyday payments feel less like chores.

But It’s Not Perfect: The Challenges

The cracks are obvious. No internet, no payment—that’s still the rule in

many parts of the country. hen there’s fraud: bogus QR codes, phishing links, and scam payment requests still crop up. Providers are fighting back with app warnings and education drives, but the danger never fully goes away

Merchant readiness is another hurdle. Sometimes the tech works fine—but the cashier doesn’t. Many haven’t been trained for NFC, so the line stalls while everyone figures it out. And while GCash’s Tap to Pay is a big step forward, it currently excludes iOS users. Apple Pay and Google Pay, though cleared by regulators, are still waiting to make their official Philippine debut.

The Road Ahead: A Hybrid Future

Cash won’t disappear anytime soon, but it’s already losing ground to QR and NFC. The future isn’t one or the other—it’s both. Imagine a commuter tapping their phone to ride the MRT, scanning a QR to buy lunch at a carinderia, then tapping again at the supermarket—all in one afternoon, without a second thought.

Soon, Apple Pay and Google Pay will likely roll out locally, GCash’s Tap to Pay will expand to iOS, and offlineready systems may emerge to cover areas with weak signal.

Cash won’t vanish overnight. But its role is shrinking fast, as QR codes and NFC slowly redefine the way Filipinos move money. For many, the real choice won’t be whether to go cashless—but which way.

IS FINTECH RESHAPING THE BREADWINNER ECONOMY IN FILIPINO FAMILIES?

MODERN MONEY HAS CHANGED HOW WE GIVE AND CARE, BUT THE OLD BURDENS REMAIN.

Payday isn’t the celebration it used to be. For many breadwinners, it’s a short sigh of relief before the next round of responsibilities kicks in. A day or two later, the texts start arriving: the electric bill is due, someone needs medicine, the internet is about to be cut. You tap, transfer, and move on. Often these requests come mid-commute or during a quick break, so seamlessly folded into the day that sending money no longer feels like a decision but a reflex.

This rhythm is now the norm for many young Filipinos carrying their families’ financial weight. What makes it possible isn’t just duty or culture. It’s the infrastructure. Fintech, especially e-wallets and digital transfers, has transformed how care and obligation flow. What once meant standing in line at a remittance center or wiring money

days in advance now takes seconds. Padala has become real-time, invisible, and everpresent.

And this isn’t just an economic shift. It’s cultural. Money transfers have become a language of responsibility and solidarity. Some even joke that a GCash transfer is today’s “love language.” Behind the joke is a quiet truth: when sending support is this easy, the requests keep coming.

Which raises a harder question: if the strain is growing, is that a failure of fintech or a reflection of how much we’ve come to rely on it? Technology doesn’t erase expectations. More often it sharpens them. If fintech is now part of how Filipinos show care, it is also exposing the habits, assumptions, and quiet pressures that have always existed in families.

RESHAPING ECONOMY

THE EVOLUTION OF PADALA

Not too long ago, sending money home followed a familiar rhythm. Every 15th and 30th, breadwinners made their way to banks or remittance centers, queued up, filled out forms, and waited for their turn. The process took effort, and that effort created a pause. Support was tied to schedules, visible and deliberate, and easier to manage both financially and emotionally.

These days, with GCash or Maya, there’s no waiting in line. A request comes through—a quick text, a missed call, even just an emoji—and the money is there almost immediately. The speed is liberating, but it also changes the tone. Support is no longer scheduled, it’s expected on demand.

THE EMOTIONAL WEIGHT OF SEAMLESSNESS

Behavioral economists have long pointed out how design shapes behavior. Nudge Theory suggests that our choices are often steered by how options are presented, and in fintech, the design does much of the steering. Big buttons, saved contacts, and one-tap transfers make sending money feel effortless. What used to be a moment of budgeting, asking “Can I spare this? Should I wait?” is now just a swipe.

Richard Thaler’s work on mental accounting explains why this matters. When money moves in cash, you feel it leaving your hand. When it moves digitally, that discomfort fades. We track it less, reflect less, and act more on impulse. For breadwinners, that missing moment of hesitation can quietly add up to fatigue and financial strain.

WHEN CREDIT FILLS THE GAP

To keep pace with constant requests, many breadwinners turn to online lending apps and Buy Now, Pay Later platforms. On the surface, they offer flexibility. In practice, they normalize debt. Borrowing doesn’t always feel like debt when it happens inside a sleek interface. One app pays another, and the cycle deepens.

Within families, this creates a hidden economy of borrowing. Some breadwinners quietly extend repayment timelines or shuffle funds between apps to meet requests. Relatives may never know the money came from credit. The support looks the same, but underneath, limits are being stretched thin.

Cover story

Fintech has made giving quick and frictionless. But for breadwinners, conscious use matters. Regaining control doesn’t mean refusing to help. It means creating boundaries that keep care sustainable.

One way is to add back small pauses. Not every message needs an instant reply. Some breadwinners choose to batch transfers once a week, creating space to review budgets before sending. Even simple habits, like logging out of apps or turning off shortcuts, can buy a moment to think before hitting send. Behavioral economists call this “sludge for good,” the idea of adding small bits of friction in systems designed for speed.

It also helps to make the invisible visible. Because digital padala doesn’t feel like handing over cash, they soften what Ofer Zellermayer calls the “pain of paying.” That ease makes it easy to underestimate how much you’re giving. Regularly reviewing transaction

histories, using built-in budget tools, or even sharing data with family can make the flow clearer. From there, it’s easier to shift from reactive giving to structured support, such as setting a fixed monthly allowance instead of responding to every single request.

The harder conversation is about limits. In many Filipino families, even a simple “not now” can feel harsh or taboo. But setting limits doesn’t have to mean pulling away. Framed differently, boundaries are a way to make support last—to protect the ability to keep showing up, not take it away.

Some families are beginning to rethink the setup. Instead of leaving one breadwinner to carry the weight, they pool money for recurring expenses or bring younger members into budgeting and goal-setting.

Shared responsibility turns digital finance from a source of quiet strain into a tool for resilience.

THE WORK OF CARE SHOULDN’T

BE A ONE-WAY TRANSFER

Ease doesn’t always bring freedom. For many breadwinners, it also means being exposed to constant requests and carrying the quiet fatigue of never-ending giving.

But technology isn’t fate. It bends to how we use it, how we talk about it, and the boundaries we choose to set. When giving is made more deliberate, more visible, and shared within the

family, fintech stops being a drain and starts becoming a tool for strength.

Fintech has made caring faster and easier than ever. With clearer limits and open conversations, it can also make care sustainable. Because in Filipino families, where love so often travels through money, clarity is its own kind of care.

Smartwatch

vivo X Fold5

Smartphone

VIVO is making a bold entrance into the foldable arena with the X Fold5, its most advanced smartphone yet—and the first foldable from the brand to launch in Southeast Asia. The X Fold5 combines sleek design, rugged durability, and flagship performance in a device that’s as practical as it is premium.

Weighing just 217 grams and measuring only 4.3 millimeters when unfolded, the X Fold5 is one of the slimmest and lightest foldables on the market. It’s built around vivo’s 2nd-Gen Armor Architecture with a Carbon Fiber

Support Hinge, featuring aerospacegrade steel and embedded carbon fiber metal nuts. This rotating sliding structure reduces screen pressure and minimizes creasing, while boosting toughness by over 47% compared to its predecessor.

Durability is a standout feature. The X Fold5 is the world’s first foldable with triple water resistance ratings—IPX8, IPX9, and IPX9+—plus IP5X dust resistance. It’s been tested to withstand 600,000 folds and extreme temperatures as low as -20°C, making it a reliable companion in any environment. Even

in harsh conditions, users can expect up to 20 hours of voice calls, over 7 hours of GPS navigation, and 4+ hours of photography.

Powering all-day productivity is a 6000mAh BlueVolt battery, built with fourth-generation silicon anode and second-generation semi-solid battery technologies. This high-density battery supports extended use without compromising the device’s slim profile.

Photography is another highlight. Co-engineered with ZEISS, the X

Fold5 features a 50MP ZEISS Super Telephoto Camera and vivo’s proprietary image processing algorithms. The result: vivid colors, sharp details, and professionalgrade portraits that rival traditional flagship phones.

With its combination of cutting-edge design, robust engineering, and highperformance imaging, the vivo X Fold5 signals a new era for foldables. No longer experimental, foldable phones are now essential, and vivo’s latest offering proves it.

TECHLIFE PAD LITE 8"

We didn’t just take the TechLife Pad Lite 8” out of the box and read the spec sheet. We put it to the test in the real world. I used it for a few weeks to see how it handled light browsing, reading, and streaming, then passed it on to my sister, a college student, to see how it would fare in actual student life. Her academic battles include juggling virtual classes, PDF readings, and the occasional YouTube crash course, so this tablet had its work cut out for it. Priced at PHP4,999, it promises the basics: portability, essential features, and a budget-friendly tag. The question is whether it can keep up with a day in the life of a busy student.

DESIGN

The TechLife Pad Lite 8” keeps things simple and practical. With its matte metallic finish, it feels light yet sturdy. At just 337.9 grams and 8.5mm thick, it easily fits in small school bags and can be used one-handed. Even with its budgetfriendly price, the design doesn’t look cheap. It has a clean, modern look that you could comfortably flaunt in class or at a café, even without dressing it up in a cute tablet case. While it does not aim for a premium aesthetic, the 8-inch screen is large enough for comfortable reading and streaming, making it well-suited for onthe-go study.

HARDWARE

Powered by a UNISOC T606 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage (expandable via microSD), plus LTE connectivity through a nano SIM slot, it covers the basics for online classes, research, and casual entertainment. Performance is modest but reliable for everyday student tasks. The display is adequate for reading and watching videos, though not as vibrant as higher-end models.

USER EXPERIENCE

Both in my testing and my sister’s daily use, the tablet handled social media scrolling, document reading, and video streaming without major issues. LTE connectivity was especially handy for studying during commutes or between classes. She found it ideal for quick reviews before exams and watching tutorials on YouTube. The main drawbacks are shorter battery life under heavy use and slow charging, so power breaks need to be planned. The speakers are passable for casual use.

But this tablet isn’t just for classes. It is also a flexible sidekick for different parts of the day. You can prop it up on your desk during cooking to follow a recipe, keep it in your bag for watching lectures while stuck in traffic, or use it in the library for quick research without dragging your

laptop along. It’s also handy for reviewing slides in the cafeteria, following along with online workout sessions, or reading e-books before bed without holding a heavy device. For team projects, it’s light enough to pass around for quick brainstorming notes or video calls.

VALUE

At PHP4,999, the TechLife Pad Lite 8” delivers portability, LTE support, and expandable storage in a compact package. It’s a solid choice for students looking for an affordable study companion without unnecessary extras. While there are trade-offs in display sharpness and battery endurance, they are reasonable for its price point. If you have been saving a portion of your allowance and want to invest in something essential that you will actually use every day, this tablet is a smart choice.

BOTTOMLINE

The TechLife Pad Lite 8” delivers where it truly matters for Filipino students: reliability, portability, and value. It’s the kind of gadget that can quietly become a daily best friend. Affordable yet capable, it’s a device the masses can embrace. If we’re being completely honest, it’s the kind of tool that can open the door to digitalization for the average-class learner, helping bridge the gap between potential and opportunity — all while offering substantial quality.

NUBIA MUSIC PRO

The nubia Music Pro is one of the newest phones to center audio performance as its key selling point, standing out in a market where most brands focus on cameras, displays, or processing power. It’s not the first phone to emphasize sound, but it brings a contemporary spin with a 2.1-channel audio solution, light breeze effects, and up to 600% volume amplification. This makes it particularly attractive to music enthusiasts and those who enjoy watching videos without external speakers. But beyond its sound-oriented design, how well does it perform as a daily smartphone?

SMARTPHONE

DESIGN

The nubia Music Pro features a bold and playful design that stands out from most smartphones. Its look is inspired by classic vinyl record players, giving it a retro yet modern feel. The phone comes in two styles: the colorful Pop Art and the minimalist Melody Wave. I got the retro-modern Pop Art design, which is bright, colorful, and certainly eyecatching. It’s the kind of phone that turns

heads in public—something that will appeal to those who appreciate the artistry of vinyl culture. Personally, I prefer a more minimalist aesthetic, so the bright, attention-grabbing Pop Art style isn’t for me.

Adding to its uniqueness is the LED ring surrounding the speaker, which illuminates and synchronizes with your music for a visual experience. The large 6.7-inch HD+ screen with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate is ideal for watching videos and movies.

HARDWARE

The nubia Music Pro is powered by a Unisoc T7200 octa-core chipset, paired with 128GB of storage and up to 8GB of dynamic RAM. It also has a large 5000mAh battery, offering good endurance for a full day of typical use. However, charging is slow at just 10W. For everyday tasks like streaming, browsing, messaging, and light gaming, it performs well for its class.

The camera is not its strongest feature. Photos can appear slightly fuzzy and lack sharpness and detail. Although it boasts a 50MP rear camera, megapixels alone don’t guarantee quality. Sensor size, lens quality, and image processing all play a role. The 5MP front camera is fine for basic selfies and video calls. Since many users prioritize camera quality when choosing a phone, this may not be the best option if photography is a top concern.

The phone’s true strength lies in its sound. The nubia Music Pro is designed for users who want loud, clear, and deep audio directly from their device. If sound quality matters more to you than camera performance, this phone is worth considering.

USER EXPERIENCE

The nubia Music Pro offers a wellbalanced user experience with consistent performance for everyday tasks. It doesn’t aim to be a flagship, but it delivers reliably for its intended audience.

Its most distinctive feature is the large round speaker on the back, which provides loud and crisp audio for media playback. It’s designed for entertainment and performs best when playing music or videos directly from the phone. I tried using it for calls, but the sound

still came from the earpiece or standard loudspeaker during speakerphone mode.

For multimedia use, the phone’s strengths are clear. Streaming movies and videos is enjoyable, supported by the large HD+ display and 120Hz refresh rate that keeps motion smooth. The audio—deep, loud, and balanced—enhances the viewing experience. That said, while the volume and clarity are impressive, the overall sound profile isn’t dramatically more refined than other strong contenders. It performs well, but doesn’t redefine mobile audio.

The nubia Music Pro handles basic tasks like social media, web browsing, and light

multitasking without issue. App loading times are reasonable, and the system remains responsive under moderate use. Its processing capabilities are best suited for everyday and entertainment-focused tasks, not for heavy applications or high-end mobile gaming.

Overall, the nubia Music Pro delivers satisfying and reliable day-to-day performance, especially for users who prioritize music and entertainment. It may not appeal to those focused on photography or gaming, but for users seeking a balance of functionality, simplicity, and standout audio, it delivers on its promise.

nubia Music Pro

VALUE

At PHP6,299 SRP—and an even more attractive promo price of PHP4,299—the nubia Music Pro offers excellent value for users who care most about audio performance. While it doesn’t match the all-around capabilities of flagship devices, it delivers a strong music experience within its price range, making it a smart choice for audio enthusiasts.

BOTTOMLINE

The nubia Music Pro shines brightest for users who truly value great sound. If you’re looking for a camera-centric device, this may not be the right fit. But if you want loud, high-quality audio, enjoy retro-inspired design, or need a phone that doubles as a mini speaker, this could be your perfect match.

PLATINUM KARAOKE ALPHA 2

In the Philippines, karaoke isn’t just a pastime—it’s practically a national sport. From beach trips with grilled fish and cold beer to small-town fiestas where everyone gets their turn on the mic, it’s the soundtrack of togetherness. So when a machine like the Platinum Karaoke Alpha 2 comes along, promising a modern, feature-rich experience, it sparks both excitement and curiosity. Can this device really blend the timeless fun of karaoke with the digital age? Let’s find out.

DESIGN

The Alpha 2 is sleek and modern while staying true to what makes karaoke uniquely Filipino. Its interface keeps that familiar touch, making OPM singalongs feel warm and nostalgic. The build is practical, bundled with a 71-key ergonomic remote and dual wireless microphones, striking a balance between tradition and tech. And honestly, even if I’m Gen Z, if my dad decided to leave this in our living room as a decorative figurine when it’s not being used, I wouldn’t be mad—it looks that classy.

HARDWARE

The hardware is impressive, combining karaoke, Android TV, and a digital TV tuner in one sleek package. It comes preloaded with 21,000+ OPM and English songs (expandable via online updates), supports 4K UHD playback, delivers Full HD sound with Original Sound Mastering (OSM), and includes dual UHF wireless microphones. Connectivity is robust with WiFi, Bluetooth, LAN, USB, SD card support, and RCA outputs. On paper, it’s a complete entertainment hub, ready for any barkada night or family gathering.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Alpha 2 introduces interactive scoring features (Pro Score, Intelligent Scoring, Sing With Me, Custom Score Clips) and lets you record performances. It also taps into YouTube Karaoke, offers customizable backgrounds, and can be controlled with the Platinum Link app.

Some features, however, may feel intimidating for older users—the same ones who often take the most joy in karaoke nights. While younger users will enjoy Android TV integration and app-based controls, the elderly might find setup and navigation less intuitive. Still, it’s refreshing to see karaoke evolving with innovation.

VALUE

Priced at around PHP25,000–PHP27,000, the Alpha 2 sits firmly in the premium range. For families seeking a future-proof entertainment hub that combines karaoke, TV, and smart features, it justifies the cost. But for casual singers who simply want to belt out OPM classics during reunions or beach trips, the price tag may feel high compared to simpler machines.

BOTTOMLINE

The Platinum Karaoke Alpha 2 is a modern take on a timeless tradition. It blends powerful hardware, interactive features, and smart-TV functionality while keeping the essence of Filipino karaoke alive. It’s a great option for households that want an all-in-one entertainment system, though its complexity and price may put it out of reach for those who prefer no-fuss karaoke fun. Still, it’s proof that even our simplest joys—like singing our hearts out—can grow with technology.

ALL-NEW YAMAHA AEROX

Next-generation performance with supersport DNA

Yamaha Motor Philippines has redefined its flagship automatic (AT) lineup with the launch of the all-new Aerox and Aerox SP. Unveiled at the 2025 Yamaha Motorshow in One Ayala Makati, the new models mark the latest evolution of a scooter that has earned its reputation as the fastest AT in its class.

The 2025 Aerox range blends sharper styling, cutting-edge rider tech, and race-bred engineering to create a machine that feels at home both in the city and on the open road. The result is a ride that looks as aggressive as it performs, delivering the kind of momentum that lives up to Yamaha’s “Fast Never Looks Back” philosophy.

Refined Powertrain with a Racing Edge

At the heart of both the Aerox and Aerox SP is Yamaha’s latest-generation 155cc Blue Core engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). This advanced single-cylinder powerplant is designed to deliver strong, efficient performance across the rev range, whether cruising at low speed or revving high for spirited riding.

The Aerox SP takes things further with Yamaha Electric CVT (Y-ECVT) technology. This system fine-tunes throttle response for smoother acceleration and enhanced control, particularly useful when transitioning between city traffic and open-road riding.

Riders can also take advantage of the SP’s 3-level Downshift Control, a feature typically found on larger sportbikes, which lets you adjust engine braking for sharper corner entries or smoother deceleration. Two selectable ride modes—Sport and Touring—further customize power delivery, letting you toggle between quick-response performance and relaxed efficiency.

Connected Cockpit and Digital Experience

One of the Aerox SP’s standout features is its full-color 4.2-inch TFT display, which offers more than just speed and fuel readings. The screen can switch between lap tracking for performance riding and commute data for everyday

use, complete with animated RPM waveforms that bring the dash to life.

Thanks to Yamaha’s Y-Connect app, the Aerox SP’s cockpit integrates Google Maps navigation, along with real-time data such as fuel consumption, engine diagnostics, maintenance reminders, and even the last parked location.

Safety and Control at Every Turn

The Aerox SP is equipped with singlechannel ABS for confident braking, while Yamaha’s Traction Control System (TCS) adds stability on slippery surfaces. The Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) warns trailing vehicles during sudden braking, and the Smart Key system and Stop & Start System bring convenience and fuel efficiency to daily commutes.

Shared Innovations Across the Range

Both the standard Aerox and the SP share a number of mechanical and ergonomic upgrades. A larger 30mm inner front fork tube improves stability, while superwide tubeless tires offer grip and confidence. The addition of a new rear disc brake enhances stopping power, and the 5.5-liter fuel tank combined with 24.5 liters of underseat storage ensures longer rides between fill-ups.

A built-in USB-C socket keeps devices charged on the go, and a handlebarmounted switch cluster offers easy control of key functions. The cockpit layout, inspired by Yamaha’s R-Series sportbikes, positions the rider in a more aggressive stance that enhances the supersport feel.

Standard Aerox: Everyday Supersport Energy

The Aerox Standard Edition retains the same 155cc VVA engine and sharp bodywork as the SP, offering urban riders a well-balanced mix of style, comfort, and performance. It’s designed

for those who want a sporty look and reliable daily ride without the extra tech features of the SP.

Pricing and Availability

The Aerox SP is priced at PHP163,900 and comes in Matte Blue. The Aerox Standard Edition is available for 125,900 in Race Blu, Glaze Blue, and Yamaha Black. Both models are now available at Yamaha’s flagship YZONE store, RevZones, and official 3S Shops nationwide.

YAMAHA MOTORSHOW 2025 UNLEASHES THE SPORT MACHINE ERA

Opening Throttle: A Night Charged with Anticipation

By the time the final night of the Yamaha Motorshow 2025 rolled in, the atmosphere was electric. The crowd wasn’t just waiting for another showcase—they were expecting a shift. Yamaha had promised a high-energy finale, and Sport Machine Night delivered. It was a celebration of speed, style, and engineering that doesn’t just move people physically, but emotionally too.

For longtime fans and curious newcomers, the change was clear. Yamaha’s big bikes had evolved. Now called Sport Machines, these motorcycles represent more than just engine size. They’re about character, performance, and the kind of riding experience that stays with you.

Crowning the R9: A MotoGPInspired Marvel

At the center of the excitement was the all-new Yamaha R9, revealed in a special preview that felt like a moment of arrival. With its aerodynamic silhouette and MotoGP-inspired design, the R9 looked fast even when standing still. Underneath the sleek body was an

890cc triple-cylinder engine that spoke to Yamaha’s racing heritage and its commitment to pushing forward. For many in the crowd, it was the highlight of the night.

The Sport Machine Identity: Power with Personality

But the R9 was just the beginning.

As the program continued, Yamaha’s full Sport Machine lineup took the spotlight. Each model brought something different to the table. The MT-07, MT-09 SP, and MT-10 SP showcased Yamaha’s “Dark Side of Japan” design philosophy. These Hyper Naked bikes were bold, aggressive, and built for riders who want torque-heavy performance and street presence.

Then came the XSR700 and XSR900, which blended retro styling with modern engineering. These bikes paid tribute to Yamaha’s sport heritage while offering the kind of ride quality today’s riders expect.

Urban Luxury on Two Wheels

For those who navigate city streets, the TMAX and TMAX Tech Max offered a fresh take on urban mobility. With 560cc engines and sportbike-level technology, these premium scooters combined comfort, style, and performance. Yamaha’s “Nothing but the Max” tagline felt right on point.

Track-Ready Precision and Racing Pedigree

The R-Series lineup—R7, R9, and R1M—brought Yamaha’s racing spirit into focus. These machines were built for speed and control, turning everyday roads into something that feels like a racetrack. Whether you’re chasing lap times or just enjoying the ride, they deliver precision and excitement.

Adventure Unleashed

For riders who prefer dirt trails and remote destinations, the Ténéré 700 and Super Ténéré ES were built to explore. Rugged and reliable, these adventure bikes carry Yamaha’s off-road DNA and invite riders to go further and discover more.

Touring Powerhouse

The Tracer 9 GT stood out for those who love long-distance travel. With its touring features and versatile performance, it’s ideal for riders who want comfort without sacrificing power.

Lifestyle in Motion

Adding a personal touch to the night was the Drama Moto Club, featuring Jake Cuenca, John Prats, Sancho Vito, Marc Solis, and Gerald Anderson. Their stories of riding with Yamaha across the country brought a sense of community and lifestyle to the event. It was a reminder that these machines aren’t just about specs—they’re about shared experiences.

Closing Lap: Yamaha’s Vision for Mobility

As the night came to a close and engines quieted down, Yamaha’s message was clear. The brand isn’t just building motorcycles. It’s shaping the future of mobility, one ride at a time. With Sport Machines leading the way, Yamaha is creating machines that speak to performance, personality, and passion.

Sport Machine Night wasn’t just the end of the motorshow. It felt like the beginning of something exciting.

For many Filipino pet parents, our furry companions aren’t just pets— they’re family. We make sure they’re well-fed, well-groomed, and showered with love. But when it comes to travel, their safety often takes a backseat—sometimes literally.

That’s what makes the arrival of Tavo, a new premium pet mobility brand, such a game-changer. Created by the same team behind Nuna, the award-winning Dutch baby gear brand trusted by families worldwide, Tavo brings to the Philippines the Maeve™ 3-in-1 Pet Travel System—the first pet car seat in the country rigorously tested to meet United Nations ECE R129 child restraint regulations. This global safety benchmark ensures your pets get the same level of crash-tested protection that’s been keeping children safe for years.

TAVO MAEVETM: CRASH-TESTED PET TRAVEL

Child-standard safety meets premium design for Filipino pet parents on the go.

SAFETY BUILT WITH LOVE, BACKED BY GLOBAL STANDARDS

At the heart of Maeve is a crash-tested pet car seat featuring advanced shock-absorbing technology and impact-resistant materials designed to protect both pets and passengers in the event of abrupt stops or collisions. Integrated smart harness points keep pets securely restrained, while a secure locking mechanism prevents accidental escapes and minimizes driver distractions.

“We know how deeply Filipinos love their pets—they’re part of the family,” says Austin Hodges, global chief marketing officer at Nuna Baby. “With Tavo, we’re proud to extend our legacy of child safety innovation to our furry companions, offering them the same level of protection we’ve long provided for children.”

THE MAEVE™ 3-IN-1 PET PROTECTION SYSTEM

More than a carrier, Maeve is a versatile travel system built to adapt to your lifestyle:

• Maeve Pet Car Seat – Crash-tested to child safety standards, with plush interiors and breathable mesh panels for comfort.

• Vehicle Base – Features ISOFIX connectors and dynamic stability controls, locking securely to your car’s frame.

• Roscoe™ Foldable Stroller Frame –Sleek, lightweight, and easy to fold, it turns the Maeve into a stylish stroller for walks or errands.

Maeve comes in Onyx, Fawn, and Merle colorways. The Roscoe Stroller Frame is finished with vegan leather accents in Black or Chocolate, offering a refined look that’s every bit as premium as it is practical.

MADE FOR MODERN FILIPINO PET PARENTS

With pet ownership rising across urban centers like Metro Manila, the demand for safer and more stylish pet mobility solutions is growing. Maeve’s design blends premium craftsmanship with pet-first engineering, addressing not only comfort and convenience but also public safety.

“Protection is what makes the Maeve such a must-have,” says Helen Johnson, marketing director at Tavo Pets. “It’s about keeping your pet safe, protecting everyone in the vehicle, and creating a stress-free, comfortable environment on every trip.”

For more information, visit Tavo’s official Shopee store or follow them on social media.

PAW-RENT’S QUICK GUIDE TO SAFE PET TRAVEL

1. Always use a secured carrier or car seat.

Loose pets can be dangerous in a moving vehicle. A crash-tested carrier like the Tavo Maeve™ keeps them safe and prevents driver distractions.

2. Choose ISOFIX for extra security.

ISOFIX connectors lock the carrier directly to your vehicle, reducing movement during sudden stops.

3. Use a harness, not just a collar. Harnesses distribute force more evenly and help prevent neck injuries in case of impact.

4. Keep pets comfortable.

Breathable mesh panels, plush padding, and enough space to sit, stand, and turn make for a stress-free ride.

5. Never leave pets unattended.

Even in the shade, vehicles can heat up quickly, posing serious health risks to animals.

Pro Tip:

For longer trips, pack a “pet travel kit” with water, snacks, waste bags, and a favorite toy to keep your furry passenger calm and happy.

AI AND THE PHP1.8 TRILLION GROWTH POTENTIAL

How artificial intelligence could transform the Philippine economy

The Philippines, Southeast Asia’s fastestgrowing digital economy, is on the cusp of a major transformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI). A new report by London-based public policy research agency Public First projects that AI could eventually boost the country’s economy by as much as PHP1.8 trillion (USD31 billion), representing a 7% increase in gross value added (GVA).

The study, Turbocharging Growth: The Philippines’ AI Opportunity , highlights AI as a key driver for sustaining the country’s economic momentum. Already, AI is part of many Filipinos’ daily lives: about half of the population uses AI tools weekly, while nearly half express optimism about AI’s potential for the nation and its personal impact.

Google country marketing manager for Vietnam and the Philippines Gabby Roxas explains the latest projections for the country’s economic growth once it invests in AI in the workforce, predicting a possible boost of up to PHP1.8 trillion in gross value added.

Productivity Gains Across Key Sectors

AI’s most immediate value lies in productivity. The report estimates that 37% of the workforce could see efficiency gains, saving up to three hours a week on administrative tasks. This could lead to wage increases of more than 6% and boost average worker productivity by over PHP110,000 annually.

Key industries stand to benefit most from AI-driven growth:

• Wholesale and Retail – PHP410 billion increase (9% rise in GVA)

• Finance and Insurance – PHP300 billion increase (12% rise in GVA)

• Public Administration and Defense – PHP109 billion increase (9% rise in GVA)

Beyond the numbers, AI is positioned to help solve national challenges. It could cut cybersecurity costs by half—saving around PHP180 billion—and boost agricultural productivity by PHP120 billion by 2035 through precision farming and early pest detection.

Partnerships Driving Inclusion

While AI promises to boost efficiency, it also signals the rise of new job opportunities centered on managing AI systems and performing higher-value work. This makes upskilling critical. Encouragingly, 90% of Filipino workers say they are eager to learn how AI models function.

Google has reaffirmed its commitment to building this AI-ready workforce. Through partnerships with the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Information and Communications Technology, and the IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP), it has made its Google Career Certificates, including the AI Essentials course, available to employees, civil servants, and industry stakeholders.

“AI is more than just a buzzword; it’s a powerful tool that can help every Filipino—from students to parents to business owners—thrive in a rapidly changing world,” said Gabby Roxas, Google’s country marketing manager for Vietnam and the Philippines. “This report gives us a clear picture of what’s possible, and it’s up to all of us to ensure we have the skills needed to seize this incredible opportunity” .

Accenture, a top employer in the country, is also championing AI readiness. The company has integrated Google Career Certificates into its corporate social responsibility programs, providing access to AI training for employees, their families, and supported communities.

“At Accenture, we’re committed to upskilling communities for AI, empowering individuals to drive innovation and economic growth,” said Rudy Guiao, managing director and corporate citizenship lead of Accenture Philippines. “We believe that investments in AI education and training can bridge the skills gap, promote digital inclusion, and create a more equitable future. Expanding our collaboration with Google will help more communities thrive with AI”.

Seizing the Opportunity

For the Philippines, the promise of PHP1.8 trillion in economic growth is not just about adopting new technology—it’s about equipping people with the right skills and fostering collaboration across sectors. With strong partnerships, targeted upskilling, and bold investments in innovation, the country has an opportunity to shape an inclusive and AI-powered future.

As the MPTC expressway network continues to grow, linking more provinces and cities than ever before, a new wave of entrepreneurs is discovering that the road to business success doesn’t always begin or end in Metro Manila. Once considered too risky or remote, smaller cities and towns are now emerging as promising hubs for innovation, investment, and growth, thanks to modern infrastructure and smart mobility solutions.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP ON THE

One HP ecosystem and enterprise-grade for smarter, more secure

Exploring Opportunity Beyond the Metro

As congestion and competition intensify in Metro Manila, more entrepreneurs are looking past crowded city centers and setting up shop in emerging locales. From Cavite to Baguio and beyond, improved connectivity is unlocking new possibilities in untapped markets and communities. According to a 2024 report by the Department of Public Works and Highways, the country’s expressway network now spans over 600 kilometers, significantly reducing travel times between economic centers.

Reimagining Operations and Logistics

Moving outside the metro isn’t just a change of scenery; it’s a smart business move. Regions beyond Metro Manila offer affordable labor, flexible supply chains, and lower costs. Additionally, many local governments and economic zones provide incentives that support the growth and success of new and established businesses.

This trend shows in recent numbers. From January to November 2024, the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) approved PHP186.1 billion in investments, surpassing the previous year’s full-year total of PHP175.71 billion and keeping the agency on track to meet its PHP200 billion target for the year. That’s a 32% increase from the same period last year. These projects, spread across regions including the National Capital Region, CALABARZON, Central Luzon, Bicol, Central Visayas, and Northern Mindanao, are expected to generate more than USD3 billion in exports and create around 60,000 jobs. It’s clear that business is booming beyond the city limits.

How

foodpanda

helps “mom and pop” restaurants grow through digital delivery

FOR MANY FILIPINOS, the dream of opening a restaurant starts with a craving—not just for food, but for community, creativity, and a shot at entrepreneurship.

Today, thousands of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are turning that dream into reality, with digital platforms like foodpanda helping them reach new heights.

The Rise of Online Delivery

“The rapid rise of food delivery and e-commerce apps during the pandemic was no coincidence,” said Lhecks De Castro, finance director of foodpanda Philippines. “These platforms became a lifeline for consumers and restaurants alike.”

Even as dine-in culture returns, online delivery remains a staple. foodpanda now hosts thousands of MSME vendors, giving independent restaurants access to digital customers, added revenue streams, and tools to compete with larger chains.

From Neighborhood Staple to Metro-Wide Reach

Hummus Elijah, a Mediterranean restaurant in Makati’s Poblacion district, joined foodpanda in 2015. Founder Eli Lapid shared how the platform helped expand their reach beyond walk-ins: “Online delivery allows us to serve condo dwellers, office workers, and even tourists. We’ve reached customers across Metro Manila—something dinein alone couldn’t achieve.”

Spotted Pig, which brought its Siargao-born menu to Manila, credits foodpanda for helping them build visibility in a new market. “It helped us be known even before people visited in person,” said owner Isabella Alvarez.

Nolita Joes, a New York-style pizza joint, echoed the sentiment: “foodpanda helped us reach customers who wouldn’t have discovered us otherwise.”

Tools for Growth

foodpanda doesn’t just deliver food—it delivers growth. MSMEs gain access to marketing tools like targeted ads, promotional campaigns, and performance analytics. “These services help small businesses increase visibility and attract more customers,” De Castro explained.

The platform also offers vendor support and onboarding assistance, helping new partners navigate digital menus, pricing strategies, and customer engagement.

Financing the Future

One of the biggest hurdles for MSMEs is access to capital. To address this, foodpanda launched financing programs like foodpanda Capital. With simplified requirements and no collateral, the initiative offers performance-based funding tailored for small businesses.

“We designed these programs with mom-and-pop stores in mind,” said De Castro. “We want to help them become the next big restaurant Filipinos can enjoy.”

A Win-Win Ecosystem

foodpanda’s broader vision is to empower MSMEs to scale, create jobs, and contribute to the economy. “It’s a win-win for customers, vendors, delivery riders, and the communities we serve,” De Castro concluded.

For MSMEs ready to take the leap, foodpanda offers more than just a platform—it’s a partner in growth.

Gaming

The Lord of the Rings franchise has always been popular throughout the years. J.R.R. Tolkien’s books have drawn many people into Middleearth, spawning books, movies, TV shows, and, naturally, video games. While the history of the Lord of the Rings video games dates back to 1982, many Lord of the Rings games span various genres. After 40+ years, there have been mixed reactions to the games, yet fans of the games want to see more (as of this writing, Amazon Games is developing a Lord of the Rings MMORPG). Does Tales of the Shire scratch the itch that Middle-earth fans want?

Division
Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch

I will fully disclose that life simulation games were never among my favorite game genres. In my honest opinion, you play video games, after all, to escape from real life, and life simulation games are usually extensions of real life (think Second Life) which, for me, defeats the purpose of becoming a hero that saves the princess or any other video game trope that you can think of when you fire up the video game console or PC. Knowing this, I decided to give this game a chance, because, after all, it’s Middleearth, and that doesn’t exist in real life, right?

You start by creating your own customizable Hobbit character and settling in the village of

Bywater. You live the day of a Hobbit, hunting, fishing, gardening, and foraging for resources. While the graphics are nothing to write home about and closely resemble something that could have been released for the PlayStation 2, graphics have hardly been a benchmark for a good game, especially as I approach two decades of reviewing video games (longer if you count all the contributions I’ve made to GameFAQs). Like any good life simulation game, you can customize your home to your liking, and that was fun to do for about 30 minutes or so, when you realize you have to work around the static environment as opposed to building something that truly reflects your personality.

Gaming

One major slip-up here is no voice acting, which is inexcusable in 2025, as even small studios can muster up voice acting, and seeing Gandalf mute doesn’t seem right to me. Second, for a cozy singleplayer game, there is an awful lot of grinding, which leads to immense feelings of sunk cost fallacy as you try to collect everything in the game. You can unlock decorations by completing quests, but most of them are much of the same and also constitute grinding. Cooking tries to shore up this rather pedestrian effort of a game, but, once again, you have to grind harder than most life simulation games to get these recipes. Building relationships with the NPCs is also fun, but sadly stifled by the lack of voice acting.

One of the saving graces of this game is that it feels like Middle-earth when you have everything unlocked, which took me about 20 or so hours, even with the massive grindfest and small distractions here and there. The game even plays like a PS2 game in that there are lots of bugs and glitches. Thankfully, the nature of always-online consoles and PCs means that these things can be fixed, but this first impression left me sad and disappointed, as living life in Middle-earth could have been done a lot better.

Over the years, many games have caught my eye through trailers and demo gameplay, only to leave me disappointed. Tales of the Shire has a great premise: living life in Middle-earth with your fellow hobbits and other Lord of the Rings characters. Sadly, the grindfests and what looks like an unfinished product show that Weta Workshop should stick to what it’s good at: special effects, makeup, props, costumes, and the like (aside from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, it has also done work for the iconic TV series Warrior Princess). If you’re a fan of hobbits, this merits a play, but I would wait for the MMORPG to have a truly immersive experience.

LIGHT & BEYOND: SIGNIFY ILLUMINATES A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Sustainability has long been a buzzword in tech, but at Signify’s recent Light & Beyond event, it became clear that lighting innovation can do far more than brighten a room—it can transform the way we live, work, and care for the planet.

Formerly known as Philips Lighting, Signify is the world’s leading lighting brand, and this latest showcase brought together architects, designers, and industry professionals to explore how light can go beyond mere illumination. The central theme was clear: better lighting can mean better energy

use, healthier spaces, and a smaller environmental footprint.

“At the heart of everything we do is a deep commitment to sustainable innovation,” said Raghuraman Chandrasekhar, country leader for professional business, Signify Philippines. “We design solutions that light spaces beautifully while respecting our planet. Connected lighting and ultra-efficiency are transforming how we manage energy, environments, and experiences. This is a journey we take together with our specifiers. They are not just partners; they are co-creators of the future.”

Five Ways Signify is Lighting a Greener Path

1. Philips UltraEfficient LED

Built to consume significantly less energy than conventional LEDs, Philips UltraEfficient bulbs deliver the same warm, high-quality light while extending lifespan and reducing replacement costs. The result? Long-term savings for consumers and businesses, and a meaningful reduction in carbon emissions.

2. Interact Connected Lighting System

This intelligent platform gives lighting a brain. In offices, it uses sensors and data analytics to adjust brightness, manage energy use, and optimize space utilization, which help create healthier, more productive work environments. Outdoors, Interact’s Multi Sensor technology enables “light on demand” and reliable duskto-dawn operation, reducing both energy waste and maintenance needs.

3. Circular 3D-Printed Luminaires

Embodying the principles of the circular economy, these fixtures are made from bio-circular materials and can be reprinted, refurbished, reused, and recycled. This closedloop lifecycle drastically cuts down on waste and the environmental toll of manufacturing new fittings.

4. NatureConnect – Human-Centric Circadian Lighting

We spend up to 90% of our lives indoors, away from the natural light our bodies are tuned to. NatureConnect replicates the rhythms of daylight using Bioup Circadian Lighting technology. Its customizable “Day Rhythms” and dynamic Natural Light Scenes are designed to improve mood, boost productivity, and support healthier sleep patterns.

5. Solar Lighting Solutions – Zero Energy, Maximum Impact

Signify’s solar portfolio is designed to light up spaces without tapping into the grid, ideal for rural and underserved communities. These off-grid, zero-energy systems prove that sustainable technology can also drive social change, ensuring that light is accessible to all.

Throughout the event, Signify highlighted the critical role of the designers, planners, and project leads who transform innovative concepts into real-world solutions. “Everything we achieve, every solution, every milestone, is the result of close collaboration with specifiers,” Chandrasekhar noted. “Their insight drives us to innovate better, design smarter, and push the boundaries of what lighting can do.”

More than just a product showcase, the Light & Beyond event reaffirmed Signify’s mission to lead the world toward a connected, sustainable, and brighter future, working hand in hand with the professionals who bring these solutions to life.

In a world where every watt counts, light has the power to do more than shine; it can lead the way to a cleaner, smarter tomorrow.

The OFFIX at PITX

A Strategic Hub for South Metro Enterprises

Low-CAPEX, high-access offices redefine operational efficiency in the country’s busiest landport

In today’s competitive business environment, enterprises are rethinking how—and where—they operate. The rising cost of traditional commercial real estate, coupled with the growing need for mobility and operational flexibility, has given rise to alternative office models. One such model is The OFFIX at PITX, a purpose-built workspace inside the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange, designed to meet the needs of operations-heavy teams without the high overhead.

Purpose-Built for Enterprise

Unlike coworking spaces geared toward start-ups or freelancers, The OFFIX targets BPO teams, logistics firms, government units, and aviation support companies—organizations that require secure 24/7 access, large-scale operations, and proximity to a highly accessible talent pool. Its location at PITX, connected directly to LRT-1’s Asiaworld Station, offers unmatched commuter convenience for employees from Cavite and Metro Manila.

“This is where connectivity meets cost-efficiency,” said Jason Salvador, PITX director for corporate affairs and government relations. “The OFFIX provides a smarter alternative to traditional office spaces, ideal for businesses seeking fast deployment, scalability, and strategic access to Metro South’s major transport corridors.”

A Case in Point: Lalamove Philippines

Among its prominent tenants is Lalamove Philippines, which moved its operations from Makati to PITX in 2023. The relocation has delivered tangible results: reduced operational costs, improved commute times, and greater workforce satisfaction.

“Transferring our office to PITX has significantly improved the quality of life for our employees,” said Djon Nacario,

Lalamove’s managing director. “Our teams benefit from direct transport links and abundant nearby dining and lifestyle options, making it a practical and appealing base of operations. The OFFIX has enabled us to scale smartly without sacrificing comfort or accessibility.”

The move also strengthened Lalamove’s logistics capabilities. Situated at the convergence of Metro Manila and Cavite’s transport arteries, PITX enables faster courier dispatch, better field team coordination, and quicker turnaround times.

Real Estate That Works as Hard as You Do

For enterprises, The OFFIX represents more than just an office—it’s a logistical advantage and a workforce enabler.

Its strategic positioning within the country’s first landport integrates office space with transport, retail, and commuter infrastructure, eliminating the need for multiple facilities.

With integrated services and nofrills utility, The OFFIX is proof that large-scale operations don’t always need large-scale expenses—just the right location and connectivity. For companies looking to future-proof their operations, it offers a compelling blueprint for how smart real estate can deliver measurable business impact.

PAG-IBIG FUND NET INCOME

JUMPS 15% TO PHP28B IN H1 2025, HIGHEST IN 45 YEARS

Pag-IBIG Fund reported double-digit year-on-year growth in its income for the first half of 2025, marking the highest earnings for the period in the agency’s 45-year history, top officials announced on Friday (August 01).

From January to June, the agency’s gross income reached PHP44.39 billion, rising by 11.65 percent or PHP4.63 billion compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, Pag-IBIG Fund’s net income grew by 15.25 percent or PHP3.71 billion to reach PHP28.04 billion. This is the highest net income recorded since the agency was founded in 1980.

Officials attributed the growth to strong collections and higher earnings from Pag-IBIG Fund’s housing and short-term loan portfolios.

“This performance shows how excellently we are managing the funds that our members have entrusted to us. With our strong fiscal standing, we remain capable of continuing to deliver our members’ benefits and are in a solid position to finance more homes under the Expanded Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino, or Expanded 4PH Program, in line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to empower more Filipinos achieve better, more dignified lives,” said Secretary Jose Ramon P. Aliling of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, who also chairs the 11-member Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees.

Higher investment returns also contributed to the income growth. The agency’s income from investments surged by 51.79 percent year-on-year to PHP4.27 billion.

This was driven by strategic placements in bonds and other debt securities, money market instruments, equities, and investment properties. Investment income accounted for 5.56 percent of the agency’s total gross income in the first half of the year.

Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer

Marilene C. Acosta, meanwhile, emphasized the strength of the agency’s financial position. As of June 2025, Pag-IBIG Fund’s total assets stood at PHP1.14 trillion, reflecting a 7.02 percent or PHP74.90 billion increase from the year-end 2024 figure of PHP1.07 trillion.

Acosta further stated that the agency’s strong performance directly benefits

its members. Under its charter, the agency returns at least 70 percent of its annual net income to members in the form of dividends, which are credited to their savings every year.

“Pag-IBIG Fund is owned by its members — the Filipino workers. It is our duty to grow and protect their savings,” Acosta said. “Guided by President Marcos Jr.’s call for government institutions to deliver responsive social benefits, we continue to ensure that our members enjoy competitive earnings on their savings and gain access to affordable home financing. We are committed to sustaining our strong performance to help uplift the lives of more Filipino workers,” she added.

MOVE IT BRINGS SOCIAL PROTECTION CLOSER TO MOTOTAXI RIDERS, SUBSIDIZES PAGIBIG CONTRIBUTIONS

MOVE IT is strengthening its commitment to providing viable livelihoods and social protection for its rider-partners as it becomes the first motorcycle taxi platform in the Philippines to subsidize Pag-IBIG Monthly Savings for top-performing riders. The program marks a landmark step toward making state-sponsored welfare programs more accessible to platform workers in the country’s rapidly expanding mobility sector.

The program covers high-achieving riders in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro, identified through strict metrics on service quality, safety performance, and productivity. It gives qualified MOVE IT rider-partners access to Pag-IBIG Fund’s full range of financial services — from affordable home financing and short-term loans to its high-yield MP2 savings program — giving thousands of platform workers a pathway to long-term security.

To avail of the subsidy, drivers must have their Pag-IBIG Membership ID (MID) number linked to their

MOVE IT profiles. Qualified riders can then apply through a dedicated portal within their driver app, which will cross-reference their performance records and uploaded Pag-IBIG Fund membership details.

Following his discussions with rider communities, Jacinto underscored the critical role of platforms in providing access to social protection programs.

To make social protection more accessible for both two-wheel and four-wheel drivers, MOVE IT and Grab have designated satellite-office spaces for SSS, PhilHealth, and PagIBIG Fund at the Asenso Center in Marikina, a hub for onboarding and training programs for current and aspiring driver-partners. The partnership with the agencies also covers Social Protection 101 courses geared at empowering platform workers to voluntarily contribute to long-term financial security and planning.

Grab pioneered Pag-IBIG Fund subsidization for its top-performing GrabCar and GrabFood driverpartners in the second quarter of 2025 — a move that, alongside MOVE IT’s latest rollout, reflects the platforms’ shared commitment to extending welfare benefits to the country’s independent workers.

GLOBE CONDUCTS PH'S 1ST 5G-ADVANCED SUCCESSFUL LIVE PILOT TRIAL

Globe has taken another step forward in shaping the country’s digital future with the successful live pilot trial of 5G-Advanced, the first of its kind in the Philippines.

The trial moves the company closer to providing next-generation wireless experiences for Filipinos and reinforces its leadership in 5G and mobile innovation.

Held in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, the pilot was designed to test the peak performance and potential impact of 5G-Advanced across a wide range of use cases, from everyday consumer applications to enterprise-level solutions.

During the activity, Globe recorded an impressive peak download throughput of ~2.5Gbps in a realworld environment, showcasing how 5G-Advanced can offer higher speeds, lower latency, enhanced reliability, greater capacity, and enable differentiated service offerings compared to current 5G networks.

The initiative utilized a 5G Standalone (SA) network with advanced technologies, including Massive MIMO and Carrier Aggregation of three 5G/NR Component Carriers (3NRCA) for a combined 210MHz bandwidth. Paired with a 5G-SA capable phone, this technical leap unlocks a new level of performance, enabling multi-gigabit speeds for a flawless user experience, from instant movie downloads to immersive, lagfree cloud gaming.

“Globe has consistently demonstrated its commitment to technological leadership, always standing at the forefront of enabling telecommunications technology in the Philippines. We continue to introduce and implement cutting-edge innovations that redefine connectivity and empower Filipinos,” said Globe president and CEO Carl Cruz.

Also known as 5.5G, this technology is the next stage in mobile evolution, developed to meet the demands of an increasingly connected world. It introduces smarter and faster

capabilities to support technologies like Extended reality (XR), Advanced Internet of Things (IIoT), connected and autonomous vehicles, and AI/ML applications.

Globally, the 5G-advanced rollout is well underway. According to a Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) report from May 2025, only 6 operators have commercially launched services, while 20 are in various stages of evaluating, planning, or live trialing the technology. WESTERN UNION

The history of fintech goes back to the dawn of time. It can be argued that currency was the very first example of fintech—bartering often got difficult if goods were in short supply. But eventually, everyone wanted to create a method of fintech (several I have discussed with the readers here at Gadgets) who had no sort of experience in the field. My research led me to Western Union, a relatively new player in fintech, considering that other fintech innovations, such as the stock market and banking, are hundreds or even thousands of years old. How did Western Union get into the industry, and why is it a preferred way of sending money to all corners of the globe today?

As of this writing, Western Union is very much alive and well, being one of the methods of sending money internationally to remote areas where technology isn’t easily accessible, and for older people who may find using newer fintech innovations such as PayPal burdensome. However, it wasn’t always involved in financial transactions. The New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Company (later Western Union) was founded in 1851, merging with the Erie and Michigan Telegraph Company in 1856. The telegraph was one of the fastest ways to communicate in the 19th century, with cables being laid out all over the world, reaching the most remote areas and giving people access to a broader communications network. In 1857, the two companies merged to become Western Union, and by 1861, they linked the West Coast and East Coast of the United States together through the first transcontinental telegraph. This drastically closed the communications gap between the then-built-up East Coast and the mostly (at the time) wild and untamed West Coast.

While the next century and some change went through with peaks and valleys, Western Union’s entry into fintech came about in 1984. Despite building a robust telegraph network in the early 20th century, including building its telex service in 1958 and spinning off its international telegraph lines into its own company, it began a series of consolidating moves leading up to that point. This was important because Western Union had a global presence, and 1987 was the turning point. Newly-appointed CEO

and president Robert J. Amman oversaw an overhaul of Western Union from an assetbased provider of communications services with an already-existing money transfer business into a provider of consumer-based money transfer financial services with a lesser focus on non-strategic communications such as long-distance analog voice network, satellite business, and undersea cable assets. The latter would be sold off in 1990 with the support of adviser Robert A. Schriesheim, who had a track record of overseeing complex business restructurings; he would also do the same with Sears later on in his career.

In 2006, Western Union became the financial services company that it is known for today. It has continued to acquire payment companies to the present. While digital payment apps such as PayPal and others are faster and more convenient, Western Union has also adapted to the 21st century. However, it is also used by scammers in developing countries and has been accused of facilitating money laundering and financing terrorist activities.
