This beautiful lily-lined pool recently featured in The Big Fish Off television programme due to its capacity to produce plenty of quality fish. The pool is great for crucians, tench and silverfish. The crucians alone can run to specimen size and are well worth a session on their own. Fishing a float tight to the pads is recommended for all species.

This water caters for club matchmen who are looking to catch a big bag of stockie carp between 4lb and 10lb. A recent triple-figure net of 37 carp averaging 6lb-7lb was reported recently off peg 11.

TEMPLE LAKE (15 PEGS) MEMBERS ONLY

Temple Lake is Bury Hill’s specimen carp water which is strictly members only, but is worth joining for what is on offer. Over 90 carp averaging around the 27lb mark are found in this lake, with a top weight of 43lb, but at only four acres it’s relatively simple to find the fish.

There’s a deep channel dug around the islands that do hold the carp well, but the shallow water between pegs 1-15 are attracting the fish now that the weather is warmer. Expect to find around 3ft of water here. Filling it in with Cell and Icelandic Red boilies has proved to be a winning tactic for members choosing to fish this swim. OLD BURY HILL LAKE (75 PEGS)

Spring is the time for the tench, and there’s no better place to catch one than from the Jungle Swim. This area is located between pegs 1 and 75 and is only accessible via a boat – but you can hire one for just £6 a day. Reeds, lily pads, overhanging trees and roots give the Jungle Swim its name, and tench love to shelter in it. You can fish from the punt, or use it to bait up before rowing back to the bank and fishing over the top with either the waggler or swimfeeder. The most successful tactics have been fishing the waggler with maggot and worm over a bed of corn, hemp, micro pellets and dead maggots. Expect a fish average of 8lb, with as many as 30 during a summer’s day.

The lake also holds plenty of bream as well as specimen carp, which can show up from anywhere and can even be targeted off the top on hot days.

Watch out, however, as there are a few larger carp swimming among them.

PATS POOL (22 PEGS)

In this 2.2-acre specimen lake can be found carp from 10lb to 33lb and many catfish from 5lb right up to 74lb. These predators also take boilies, so watch out! Depths average from 3ft-7ft down the dead arm, and there are four islands to fish to.

TWIN OAKS (36 PEGS)

This two-acre lake is 25m wide and 6ft deep, sloping at 45 degrees towards either bank. This will force the angler into fishing the pole, feeder or waggler.

The average size of the fish is approximately 5lb, and match catches in excess of 150lb are regularly made.

Carp, F1s, tench and silvers are the fish to go at.

Throop is a truly epic river fishery

F you want some truly epic, classic river fishing this summer, then consider becoming a member of Ringwood and District Anglers Association.

The Dorset club controls 23 miles of bank fishing on the River Stour running from the beautiful town of Blandford all the way to Christchurch Harbour. Its jewel in the crown, Throop Fishery, is a specimen angler’s dream and is famed for its barbel, chub, pike, carp and silverfish sport. Some of angling’s greatest characters have trodden its paths.

Throop is made up of three picturesque beats...

Beat 1: . This stretch is very lightly fished. It runs from the golf course at Parley to the New Weir at Throop. For just £5 a day anglers can target big barbel, chub, perch, tench and roach on this deep stretch.

Beat 2: Beginning at the New Weir and running all the way down to the road bridge on the A338 at Blackwater, it passes through a lovely gravel bottom with lots of shallows and deep pools. It holds the Throop record barbel of 16lb 2oz along with chub to 8lb 3oz, specimen roach,

Beat 3: This runs from the A338 at Blackwater down to Iford Bridge, which is part of the tidal stretch. Many large barbel have been taken from this stretch to over 15lb and all methods and baits can be used, even the float when conditions are right.

NE of the most popular match and pleasure waters in the Midlands, Packington has no fewer than seven coarse lakes and a trout water.

On this mixed fishing venue nets to 100lb can be expected.

The fishery’s flagship water, Molands Mere, has 60-plus pegs, all uniquely designed with an island to cast to. The pool holds a huge head of carp and F1s plus lots of smaller skimmers, crucians and roach.

The other lake which we recommend is Geary’s Level.

There is also a short stretch of the River Blythe which offers chub and silverfish fishing. This is a great stretch of water to rove about on and stalk a few fish.

A

NYONE holidaying in Wales this summer and looking for somewhere to fish or stay should try Nine Oaks Fishery.

The peaceful venue, a couple of miles inland from the west coast of Wales, has three coarse and three fly lakes as well as self-catering accommodation in the form of cottages and static caravans.

The three coarse waters – Main Lake, House Pool and Novices – are well-stocked with carp,

tench, bream and roach. Main Lake has an average depth of 4ft-5ft, with plenty of features to fish to. It’s full of carp, but the roach fishing is also excellent.

Don’t get caught out by the name ‘Novices Pool’, which is lovely for beginners but holds carp to 8lb and some cracking roach. Fishing simple float rigs with maggot and corn will catch carp averaging 1lb-2lb and 6oz roach all day long. For a mixed coarse session, Nine Oaks takes some beating!

HE Lincolnshire Wolds are home to plenty of fisheries but many fail to offer little more than just a lake to go fishing on – a criticism you could certainly never level at Woodland Waters!

Located between the market towns of Sleaford and Grantham, this massive rural site has been developed over decades to produce a multi-lake complex with a range of accommodation to pick from, as well as all the facilities you’d expect, including a well-stocked restaurant and bar.

Within easy reach of the angling heartland of the Midlands and South Yorkshire, Woodland Waters is equally popular with the local day-ticket angler. Some of its five lakes are very challenging specimen waters, others are well-stocked pools to suit novices and younger anglers.

The Specimen Lake covers 14 acres and is mainly a carp water, although there’s an abundance of other species including bream, rudd, roach, perch and pike. Next door is the Match Lake, wood-lined with an island

Birch Lake is Woodlands’ newest lake and very much like a water you’d find at a commercial carp fishery, heavily stocked with carp to 10lb, tench, bream, roach, and rudd.

For plenty of action, check out the Small Carp Lake and Roach Pool, both of which are small waters stuffed with carp, tench, roach and crucians.

Bring your own tent or caravan and you can stay on the large site that has two amenity blocks, electric and non-electric pitches plus picnic areas and a children’s play area – not to mention various woodland paths criss-crossing the site. ISIT Barston Lakes and you know you’re fishing somewhere a little special – from the imposing five-star clubhouse overlooking the main lake to the sheer diversity of angling on offer across the four lakes built around the plush West Midlands Golf Course.

Just minutes from the busy M42 Motorway, Barston is more than just a fishery. It’s sited in the rolling West Midlands countryside with the intimate River Blythe running alongside and, as you’d expect of a golf course, the banks and grounds are immaculately kept. Anglers and golfers enjoy their sport side by side in perfect harmony.

For the angler the choices really are endless, the jewel in the crown undoubtedly being the sprawling 124-peg Main Lake. This is home to a range of species and in recent years has

been at its very pinnacle in terms of the quality of fishing on offer.

Although it looks deep, this lake is actually relatively shallow with a typical depth of 5ft-6ft, making it ideal for most common methods.

Specimen carp anglers love the place, and Barston runs a members’ only syndicate that allows night fishing – otherwise you’re limited to fishing between dawn and dusk.

Home to many carp matches, the average size of fish is between 8lb and 15lb, although the lake regularly produces twenties for carp, pleasure and match anglers. A couple of 30lb fish add a bit of spice.

Bivvies are allowed but please take care not to obstruct the public footpath that runs around the lake.

Skimmers are becoming increasingly dominant, with 100lb nets regularly taken in matches on the pole or a small cage feeder. Then there are millions of roach and perch that are often ignored by the match brigade.

Next to the Main Lake is the Match Pool, a canal-type water where every peg has access to an island and which is home to thousands of small carp plus a few bigger specimens. New to the Barston portfolio in recent years are Daisy’s and Jake’s Lakes, home to carp, F1s and a mix of silverfish.

The large Marina Lake holds mainly silverfish, while Willow Lake is a commercial-style lake holding lots of carp from 3lb-6lb plus barbel, tench, chub, crucians and rudd. Should you wish to take the kids for a few

hours, head to the Owl Lake. It’s been created for the younger angler and offers a bite-a-chuck from small carp, tench, roach, bream and rudd.

Competition anglers will get on well with the Match Lake, home mainly to carp but with some big bream and plenty of roach too... and if you fancy catching a whacker or two get on the specimen Woodbine Lake, which holds carp to over 25lb.

That leaves the river fishing, both the Old Witham and Barlings Eau being tributaries of the main River Witham.

In summer, bream are dominant, with 100lb catches taken, but you can pop down for a few hours in the evening with basic tackle and catch small roach, rudd and perch. Both waters also hold plenty of pike for the predator angler.

Swims on The Point are popular with both carp and pleasure anglers, thanks to the new bivvy pegs and the prospect of fishing into moderate depths. Surface baits, pellet wagglers, baggin’ wagglers, Method feeders and bomb fishing are all perfectly at home off these pegs and will catch big numbers of carp in an average day session.

Pegs 100 through to 120 at the end are great for zig rig fishing with PVA bags of crushed boilies and pellets – and often produce the bigger carp, which go to well over 30lb in here.
