NE OF THE BEST known sayings in the horse world is ‘No foot, no horse’, and with good reason. But should we also be looking above the coronet band?

Healthy feet and joints will allow your horse to compete at the top of his game

than a product that provides glucosamine alone. In fact it’s worth being wary of anything that sells by percentage, such as ‘100% glucosamine’ which can be very confusing. Instead look for a product that declares the actual feeding rate of all the key ingredients per day.

Equine insurance is there to protect you against unforeseen risks, which means known risks won’t be covered. Be sure you know the ins and outs of exclusions with expert advice from the team at KBIS British Equestrian Insurance

HEN IT COMES to equine insurance, the most frequently asked questions relate to exclusions: what are they, why are they on a policy and can they be removed? With these in mind it’s important to remember that insurance is designed to protect you against a possible risk, things that cannot be foreseen. What it’s not designed to cover is an existing, known, risk and this is where exclusions come in.

Put simply, exclusions are noted conditions or risks not already covered under your insurance policy. They can be broken down into two groups: 1. General exclusions 2. Specific exclusions All insurance policies will carry general exclusions, and these will be stated in your policy terms and conditions.

Specific exclusions, however, are ones that apply to an individual policy. On a horse insurance policy these might be in reference to an illness, injury or disease that occurred or was diagnosed before the policy was taken out, ie a pre-existing condition. It could also be in reference to a noted condition, conformational fault or vice that may predispose the horse to a specific illness or injury.

The good news about specific exclusions is that they can be reviewed and, depending on the type of injury or illness, may be removed from the policy after a certain period of time.

Exclusions are normally applied at two times – either when the policy is first incepted (when it’s first taken out) or at the point of renewal. At inception it’s usually in response to something that’s

shown up on the pre-purchase vetting or vet history. At renewal it’s generally in relation to an existing claim, or perhaps something that’s been noted on the health form – which your insurer will ask you to complete in relation to the horse’s well-being over the past 12 months.

At KBIS, the aim is always to try to be as transparent as possible, so that you, the customer, know exactly what is and isn’t covered by your policy. Specific exclusions will always be noted on your certificate of insurance so you can clearly see what’s been applied.

“Will I have an exclusion placed on my policy if I make a claim?”

Generally, if you make a claim, that condition will then be excluded in the next policy period. Depending on the condition the exclusion may be specific to that individual circumstance or more generic if it’s viewed by professionals as being likely to pre-dispose the horse to other related injuries or illnesses.

Although you’ll have an exclusion for the condition placed on a new policy, ie at renewal, your cover period for that injury or illness will start from the onset date of the incident, not the policy start date, so you’d still have cover in place for the condition under your old policy.

For example, at KBIS all policies now provide 15 months' cover for vet fee insurance, so if your horse sustains an injury to his stifle on May 1, 2017 you’ll have 15 months in which you’ll be able to claim for any ongoing treatment, up until July 31, 2018. If your policy falls for renewal on October 1, 2017 your new policy will list a specific exclusion relating

to the stifle injury, but you’ll still be covered and able to claim (subject to your incident limit) for the injury under your old policy, up until July 31, 2018.

“What sections of my policy does the exclusion relate to?”

A specific exclusion relates to all sections of cover you’ve taken out. For instance, if your horse had colic surgery and you claimed for treatment under the vet fee cover you had in place, any subsequent exclusion placed on your policy relating to colic surgery would apply to your vet fee cover and your mortality cover. It

Unfortunately, many people make the decision to buy before they've received their certificate and then find exclusions placed on their policy.

“When examining a horse for purchase you have to ask yourself, on the balance of probabilities, can the horse do the job for which it is intended on the day of examination?

Whereas vets acting for the insurance company have to assess the risk of the horse becoming lame in the future. Therefore any abnormalities present may incur an exclusion.”

would also relate to loss of use cover if you had this in place. In your policy terms and conditions you’ll find general policy exclusions relating to the policy as a whole, and also ones which are applicable to certain sections of the policy, such as mortality or vet fee cover.

“How long will the exclusion be in place?”

This is dependent upon the severity of the condition, the chance of re-occurrence and whether it will then pre-dispose the horse to the condition or a related condition in the future.

Different insurers will have their own exclusion review procedure, but KBIS usually requests a clinical print out from all veterinary practices that have treated the horse, and possibly a veterinary examination and report confirming the horse is fit and healthy at the time of review.

In most cases you would need to wait at least 12 months (from the end of a claim or when treatment for the condition ceased) before an exclusion would be reviewed, ie at your policy renewal date.

This very fact is something we should remember every time we’re considering what and how to feed them. Failure to give our horses access to the highly fibrous material they would consume naturally has repercussions every step of the way through the digestive system. Here, we’ll show you why – and reveal what you can do to feed fibre the right way.

The horse’s stomach is a small part of his gut (about 10%) and so many of the basic rules of feeding have evolved to ensure we don’t inadvertently cause tummy troubles by over-feeding. Food stays in the stomach for around 20 minutes before passing into the small intestine, although, when trickle feeding, the

It won’t surprise you to know that fibre takes more chewing than cereals.

Researchers have measured the number of chews taken to eat 1kg of different feeds and found: l Hay takes 3,000-3,500 chews l Oats take 832 chews l Mixed concentrates take 1,383 chews This shows that chewing matters to horses, and this is because it’s how their saliva is produced, which differs from humans who salivate at the smell or thought of food.

A horse’s saliva lubricates food to make it easy to swallow and contains bicarbonates that buffer acidity within the digestive tract.

A high fibre diet is the key to a happy, healthy horse

This basic principle has informed some of the latest advice when it comes to reducing the risk of gastric ulcers: feeding a double handful of chopped fibre before fast work helps to stop ‘acid-splash’ that can ultimately result in ulcers. Exercising on an empty stomach is a thing of the past for horses!

Going with the gut The hind gut is the collective term used to refer to the caecum and large intestine.

A population of microorganisms live here, and they perform vital functions on behalf of their host: l They ferment fibre to produce slow release energy for the horse to use or store l This fermentation generates heat,

NOT ALL FIBRE IS THE SAME Because fibres differ this has a major impact on how much energy they supply to the horse.

As plants mature and grow taller they need more structure to keep them upright – the older the plant, the more indigestible they become and the less they contribute to the horse.

Forages conserved as young plants, such as Dengie Meadow Grass with Herbs, will be more digestible than those left to mature to produce hay.

Feeding older horses Many horses remain fit and healthy well into their veteran years, but as Joanna Palmer, nutritionist at Allen & Page explains, whether your veteran’s retired or still leading an active ridden life, it’s important to address his changing nutritional needs

IRST AND FOREMOST, fibre is the most important part of every horse’s diet, regardless of age. In the wild, they graze for up to 18 hours a day and to mimic this need to ‘trickle feed‘. Our horses should have fibre, in the form of grass, hay or haylage available at all times.

Fibre isn’t only essential for good digestive health, its digestion also provides a good source of calories and body heat as it is fermented in the gut. If your horse isn’t eating enough fibre, he’ll lose weight, regardless of how much high calorie ‘bucket’ feed he may also be fed.

Unfortunately, even with the best care and regular attention from a qualified equine dental technician, a natural decline in dental condition is unavoidable. Spring product guide 2017 Feeding good-doers While weight loss is common in veteran horses, it’s not a problem that affects them all. Some will remain good-doers, and feeding a high calorie feed may lead to unwanted weight gain. If your horse is a good-doer, keeping him at an ideal weight and body condition score is essential to avoid placing additional strains on his body and joints. Allen & Page’s new Veteran Light feed has been formulated to provide older horses and ponies showing no signs of unwanted weight loss with all the benefits of a veteran feed, without the additional calories.

Regardless of your horse’s calorie needs, a good veteran feed will be one that is high in fibre and low in starch and sugar, as this is more natural for the horse and kinder on the digestive system than a

Feeds that contain a high proportion of cereals should be avoided, as these have significantly higher starch contents than Veteran Vitality, Veteran Light and Fast Fibre, which use fibre and oil as energy sources. A high starch diet can not only cause fizzy and excitable behaviour, but it is also more difficult to digest and can make the horse more prone to developing laminitis or colic.

Meet his needs With age comes the increased likelihood of medical issues, many of which can be exacerbated by a horse’s diet. For this reason it’s important, when choosing a suitable feed for your horse, to take any veterinary issues he may have into account. This will ensure his diet is suitable for him as a whole and not just in relation to his veteran status.

For example, horses and ponies with a history of laminitis, and those at increased risk of developing the disease due to conditions such as Cushing’s disease and insulin resistance, should only be fed feeds that have very low starch and sugar levels of under 10% combined. Traditionally, specific veteran feeds have starch and sugar levels above this recommended safe level, but Veteran Light has a combined starch and sugar level of just 8.5%, making it ideal for those prone to, or at risk of laminitis.

It’s likely your horse’s nutritional needs will vary significantly during his veteran years, but continually assessing his weight and body condition, as well as carefully monitoring his ability to graze and eat hay properly, means his diet can be adjusted to meet his changing requirements.

JUST ADD WATER An important quality of a feed for veterans is that it is easy to eat. A veteran horse with poor teeth is more at risk of choke and colic, simply because he’s not able to chew properly. A feed that soaks with water to form a soft, palatable mash is often relished by even the fussiest of feeders regardless of the number of teeth they have!

Soaking using warm water also releases more flavours, helping to tempt fussy eaters. If you find that your veteran horse can be reluctant to drink at times, feeding a soaked feed, like Fast Fibre, Veteran Light or Veteran Vitality, can help you to increase his water consumption while also helping to keep the digestive system hydrated and able to function efficiently.
