Gabriela Pacheco

My name is Gabriela Pacheco. My major is in Architecture. I am a first-generation college student at Thomas Jefferson University. I transfered from Brookdale Community College in New Jersey after receiving my Associates in Science in Architecture. My personal interests include listening to music, watching TV shows and documentaries, and taking walks. I also enjoy drawing and journaling, but it is a skill I am focusing at getting better. I strive to work hard and push myself to have great outcomes.

Set in Northeast Philadelphia, a mediateque was to be placed on a corner site. In my intent for the design, open and compressed circulation would put importance to pedestrian paths. This would be to bring back the importance of human scale to a high vehicle-use area. There are organic elements of light that comes through into the building to follow movement throughout the building.

Northeast Philadelphia Mediateque

In comparison to Philadelphia’s area of 141.7 square miles, Northeast Philadelphia takes up about 50.8 square miles of it. Northeast Philadelphia is a region with little funding for public transportation, but they are also very reliant on owning cars to get around. The median age of this area is rising, meaning there are less people leaving and less children being born. Residents are staying and getting comfortable here. While there is a high number of white race percentage, the northeast highlights a diverse amount of other races as well.

Program Analysis

Transitions

Within the program required, I put them in categories that had most in common and then visualized how a person can get to the next spot. These being transitional points and where one would go through.

Program Analysis

Noise

Within the program required, noise is an important aspect in a library. This led to me analyzing which areas are more quiet and how that gradients to more louder spaces.

Interior Perspective - Skylight following movement

Through the process of making a physical model of a detailed wall section, there was a lot learned in how certain materials attach to one another and certain dimensions that work with one another.

The space aims create interactive spaces of exploration through a variety of zones and subzones. The zones are organized through areas of different levels of organization, different greenry, and tackling different noise levels. An additional element is added with the solar shading device that provides multiple seating options and a rain garden to collect water.

Given the site of West Philly Peace Park, the task was to further ex tend growing and har vest, while adding com munity spaces to be used year-round. The space aims to create in teractive spaces of ex ploration through a vari ety of zones. The zones are organized through levels of greenry, noise levels, and organization. Solar shading devices were added to add seat ing options and collect rain water.

Utilizing the street context of the site, it was important to place certain program elements on the louder, more public side, versus the quieter, more residential side. In paying attention to the stark contrast, it allowed for the organic organization of program.

Connection to Outdoor Space

There are both public and private outdoor spaces. This is to give each person using the space a fair chance to connect with nature. Connecting with nature is a key element to neurodiverse architecture design. Each outdoor space is connect to a cultural tie in central latin American immi-

Elevation shown was edited in Photoshop to enhance the use of materials and colors. These contribute to cultural meaning of Latin culture.

The courtyard has significant cultural meaning to Latin culture. In adding this design element to be only accessible to residents within the building. This security allows for those staying here to be free to be themselves.

The public community passage way near both streets resembles corridors in Latin streets. This cut through encourages the community to walk through and sense the colorful environment created through culture.

Creating a daycare where children are free to explore their minds and be creative was my thought process in making my concept as an interactive space. Children can get overstimulated very easily, so I created a space only meant to be interactive at certain times to indicate to children about different transitions throughout their day at daycare.

These sections illustrate the different roofs in different spaces. Sun scoops in a triangular shape are placed in areas that are meant to be interactive in their own different ways. Places to highlight those spaces are the multi-purpose room, classrooms, and entrance hallway.

Section A-A

Interior interactive spaces are brought to life with triangle shadows created by the roof over the hallway. The multipurpose room is open, but still defined by walls that include a rock-climbing wall and a glass wall to oberve play.

Outdoor interactive spaces are taken place in the playground where colors are vibrant and triangular-shaped equipment is to encourage children to interactive and play.

In being tasked with proposing a studio design for CABE, utilizing Revit was required to enhance the design created. In learning the program, there were challenges in learning each component. Structural sections allowed for the understanding of how our building works in an exterior and interior sense.

In honoring Zaha Hadid in this exhibit space, I utilized elements of the surrounding site and added them into the design. Fluidity of nature is my concept in that the site didn’t have much landscape. I added landscape into the exhibit space to allow people a space away from the busy noise outside.

The pattern of a single glass panel follows landscaping diagram.

The roof of this building brings the gallery to life and emulates the ideas Zaha Hadid expressed throughout her career. The curved line derived off the river line that lays to the left of the site. Followed by that, glass paneling is installed on the roof to allow more natural light into the space. The roof rises in area where the most curvy parts are and lay on the existing structure for support.

Throughout the semester, we were making sketches of buildings we were learning about as we went. We first wrote a summary of its importance then drew the most telling features. Through hand-drawing, I paid attention to the small details that brought out the character of the building.
