Body and Soul

The intent of this project was for us students to listen to a song and create what we feel. The song I chose was Body and Soul by Amy Winehouse and Tony Bennet. To me, this song described the pain often endured by love, which is why I incorperated the color blue. The movement of the blue throughout the model also represents the fluidity of the song. The black paneling on the bottom represented a music sheet, and the arches represent the ripples in melody at the beginning of the song.

Scott’s Bluff Wildlife and Botony Exhibit

This project is located on Scott’s Bluff on Southern University’s campus. The proposed building is oriented in a way that allows for interaction with the Mississippi River. The primary space located in the center of a building serves as an informative area focused primarily on the wildlife in Lousiana. The secondary space serves to inform people of the plant life living on and around the site. From the first floor primary space, one can look onto the river through windows located underneath the mezzanine level. The mezzanine level opens up to a botnical garden balcony space that is interactive for guests.

This assignment was created to expand our knowledge and show there are more than one way to express our designs. The architect I chose to influence my drawing was Douglas Darden. Darden utilizes the technique of shading to show depth and texture.

“The Journey of Life”

I wanted to create an imersive spiritual experience for all people across the world.

To provide the Zulu decendants with a spiritual space where they can teach others.

A personal battle of crossing a line

Creating a spiritual space

Looking into the history of interior design

Coming into this semester, I did not understand what it meant to decolonize design. I was not aware of how design has imposed one idea throughout history as a means on colonization.

When trying to decide what kind of project was going to tackle, found information of the Zulu way of building their huts. Because they were colonized and no longer live in their huts, I wanted to find a way to bring them back. After persuing this idea, I reached a dead end with the lack of passion for this kind of idea. felt like I could not ask these people to go back to living in a hut after experiencing a modern way of living.

I then explored the idea of creating a spiritual reflection space for the Zulu people. This idea only led me so far because the experience at the site was not compelling enough for people to travel from outside of KwaZulu-Natal.

My own spiritual journey

The Catholic religion believes that no human is above nature or another human, therefore we should not want to dominate. When the earth is seen as a source of profit and gain, humanity is at risk of inequality. I think this is important for reflection because of how so many civilaztions are only remembered by decendants because of colonization.

Experiencing the life of the Pueblo people

On our class trip to Mesa Verde, Colorado, I felt detached from society for the first time. I was able to experience the beauty in their simplistic way of living. I realized that innovation has given us a lot, but it has taken away our connection to nature.

Understanding how to decolonize design

We were asked to lock our own ideas away so we can truly dive into another culture and think the way they do. It was difficult for me to stray away from my way of thinking and planning through the semester project.

Crossing a line

When exploring a new idea for my project, I realized how attracted to the Zulu spirituality was. found connections between their traditional religion and mine. I wanted to explore this and in doing so I realized I was creating a building for me rather than honoring them.

Creating a journey

I landed on the idea of taking people on a journey of how Zulu people traditional made specific items based on the land around them. One journey takes you down the timeline of beadwork, and the second journey takes you down a path to experience the plant life that was important to the Zulu’s way of living. These two journeys resemble the path of life. As you go down the path, you are continuing to age until you reach the point of reflection. This reflection space will allow travelers to reflect on their journey throughout the site, reflecting their journey throughout life.
