become a

GREEN SHOPPERtoday!

Ever wondered what’s behind the green door? As a consumer you can send a strong message to businesses by choosing to spend your money on products that are not harmful to people, animals or the planet. Open the green door today. Become a responsible shopper by following some of these handy tips.

GRAB A BRAG BAG!

Buy your own reusable shopping bag and use it with pride. You are doing something good for the environment so why not show off a bit and make your green bag your favourite shopping accessory!

GET PICKY ABOUT PACKAGING. Choose paper over plastic and polystyrene. Note the difference between recycled and recyclable material. The latter means that it can be recycled, whereas the former indicates that the packaging has been recycled. Brush up on your knowledge of green initiatives and logos.

DITCH USING DISPOSABLE PRODUCTS. Avoid using foil baking trays, plastic razors and throw-away cleansing wipes.

LEARN TO LOVE LOCAL. Imported produce has a much greater impact on the environment, so make an effort to support local producers and manufacturers wherever possible.

BRING BACK THE SCHOOL LUNCH BOX. Healthy packed lunches for work and school are a great idea. They save on packaging (making them greener), money and tend to be a lot more nutritious than tuck shop treats and take-away meals.

GET ENERGY EFFICIENT. Before replacing old household appliances, use some of your renewable energy to look into which products are the most energy efficient.

BULK UP ON BASICS.

Not only will you save on packaging…bulk buying is cheaper.

GET SIZE WISE. When buying products with a longer shelf life, opt for the biggest packaging, e.g. purchase a 2-litre carton of juice, which can be decanted, rather than buying ten 200ml juice boxes.

Sensational scents Don’t you hate it when you spray your favourite perfume on your way out in the morning only to have it disappear by lunchtime? Never fear – there are ways to prevent this from happening!

The first step to ensuring that your fragrance lasts longer on your skin is to ensure that it is well-moisturised; because oils on the skin trap the fragrance notes and make them last longer. I suggest applying a body oil or moisturiser post-shower. When you apply the fragrance, concentrate on the pulse points. These are areas where the veins are close to skin surface and you feel your circulation, including your wrists, neck, between your breasts and even behind knees. Don’t rub your wrists together after applying fragrance as it breaks down the oils. I also suggest a light mist of fragrance through the hair. Many fragrance lines also include shower gels and body lotions. Whilst layering the scent in different forms will help it last longer, these products can also be costly. If these items do not fall within your budget - choose body products that are unscented or lightly scented. FRAGRANCE

Q Tell us more about your family and career as a dance instructor on the South Coast? I have 2 sons, 3 grandsons, and a husband, wellknown pharmacist, Pierre Venter. I have been on the South Coast since I was 5 years old. I have always loved dance, music and the stage. My inspiration came from my parents, Mum a dancer and singer and Dad who had his own professional band. Once I started modern dance, at the age of 14, I put everything into it. Living on the South Coast I was not always guaranteed the availability of a teacher so only when relocating to Durban did dance take over my spare time and life. Once married I returned to the South Coast and started the Jane Fonda Style of aerobic classes, but my love for hectic pounding the floor with monotonous moves soon died. Remembering my days of trying to find a dance teacher, I decided to become one. Travelling to Durban for 18 months did the trick and 31 years later I am now teaching little dancers whose mothers trained with me.

Q Your dance productions are a hit! Tell us more about the message behind these shows? My dance productions have all been originally scripted, produced and choreographed by myself, with the help of my Port Shepstone Rotary colleagues. A charity of my choice has always benefited from the profits. The message behind my shows is: express yourself, set your body, spirit, and mind free and remember to give back when you can.

Q Why do you love living on the South Coast? The South Coast is my favourite place, as I really prefer small towns. The support you get from people around you is immediate and unwavering, friendly and relaxed.

Q Describe your typical day. Coffee on the patio with my two cats, while meditating, appreciating the beautiful ocean view that I have been blessed with‌ later in the day, preparation for my afternoon dance classes.

Q What do you love about shopping at Shelly Centre? Shelly Centre, has ample parking, is convenient, and the variety of shops satisfy my needs.

Q What is your favourite gadget? It has to be one that does not absorb too much of my time or confuse me. So let’s say my GHD, for those too curly summer hair days, and my milk frother to make cappuccinos.

Q Are you sentimental when it comes to giving gifts? I love giving gifts. I start looking long before birthdays are due. In fact if I see something, I buy in advance, forget I have already bought then buy again… so some favourite friends get a few things. I have never bought a card, as I make my own. The speciality is the pertinent rhyme I compose to suit the receiver, and I get into trouble if I say no time, no rhyme!

Q What are your favourite fashion accessories, and why? Accessories = awesome things. I love fun jewellery, sunglasses, bags and hats (when they fit me as I have a small head!). As jeans take my preference, appropriate accessories can always smarten them up or casual them down, and I am a big mixer of gold, silver and leather...

Looking for latest bestseller at Bargain Books!

Q What do you think about chat and the instant nature of the techno age? I love “What’s App” and BBM. It’s amazing, quick, easy, convenient…to the point and best of all, it’s free.

Q If you could change one thing about the modern world, what would it be? Being a bit of a health freak, I would try to get the Pharmaceutical Companies and Medical Aids to acknowledge alternative medicines and natural therapies that can be used in conjunction with ethical medicine.

Q How do you feel about being Shelly Centre’s very first Loyal Shopper? I am really excited. It brings back memories, as I was also the first Travel Queen of Southern Africa in 1972.

HOW TO STAY YOUTHFUL AND GORGEOUS: I worry about the twinkle in my eye‌ not the wrinkle. I love interacting with all my dancers, current, and those who have moved on. My beautiful daughters-in-law keep me young too, not to mention the games I have to play with my grandsons.

HEALTHY SNACKING: Snacks are the most important part of eating. I never want to feel hungry and often pack little Tupperwares with the ruling snack at this moment (as I go through phases) raw nuts, and wine gums. However, I always have a craving and place for dark chocolate, popcorn and cucumber.

golden THE

RULE

WHAT TO KNOW WHEN SHOPPING FOR GOLD?

What symbolises the enduring allure of beauty and commitment more than a superbly crafted piece of fine jewellery? The pieces which you choose will hopefully last for a lifetime and beyond. They will be an investment and it is therefore worthwhile taking the time to ensure that you are making your purchase through a trusted jeweller who will be able to assist you in making the best decision for both your desires and your budget. The first step in this process is to insist that your chosen jeweller is a member of the Jewellery Council of South Africa. This person can then guide you to negotiate the maze of possibilities and nuances that can so easily trip up a naïve buyer. Just as one would search for the best possible surgeon, mechanic or plumber – so too should you spend time to find the best jeweller as a simple mistake can result in a costly one.

When buying Jewellery choose an Accredited Jeweller!

32

SPRING INTO SUMMER 2013 |

Remember to ALWAYS read the fine print! There are a number of cleverly worded phrases which could confuse an inexperienced customer… For instance, the terms ‘bonded gold’ or ‘fusion gold’ indicate that the piece in question is NOT solid gold, but is instead gold plated with a silver core.

www.yourmallofchoice.co.za

Before you go window-shopping, it is worth familiarising yourself with some of the basic terminology used in the industry… The term ‘carat’ (when referring to gold) is the system used to describe the percentage of pure gold that an item contains. The higher the carat number, the higher the percentage of gold in your gold jewellery. 24ct gold is pure gold, and is too soft to be used for commercial jewellery. 18ct gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 75% gold. 9ct gold contains 9 parts gold and 14 parts of one or more additional metals, making it about 40% gold. Different alloys are added to pure gold in order to make it more durable, and to lower the cost. Adding other metals to the mix also allows metallurgists to change the colour of the gold. Palladium or nickel can be added to create white gold. Adding copper produces a rose or pink tint, whilst silver lends the gold a greenish cast. The choices are endless and wonderful, so happy shopping!!!

TO REMIND YOU TO CHERISH ALL OF MOTHER NATURE’S PRICELESS GIFTS‌

PRECIOUS PERIDOT Peridot is a well-known and ancient gemstone, with items of jewellery dating back to the Pharaohs in Egypt. Named after the Greek word peridona, which means “to provide richnessâ€?, peridot is the coveted gem variety of the mineral Olivine. The richness of green varies according to the amount of iron present in its chemical structure‌ the more iron, the deeper the hue of green. The most desirable colour is deep olive-green with a slight yellowish tint. Deeper olive-green tones tend to be the most valuable. In crystal healing, peridot is believed to have magical properties that inspire healing, renewal, purification, rebirth and growth.

EXQUISITE EMERALD The ancient Incas and Aztecs of South America regarded emeralds as holy gemstones, but the oldest known finds date back to Egypt (between 3000 and 1500 B.C.) The name emerald is derived from the Greek word smaragdos, meaning “green stone. It is the most precious stone in the beryl group, known for distinctive and spectacular green colour, which is due to the presence of trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. Emeralds are valued for their hue, hardness and transparency. In metaphysical circles emeralds are appreciated for their wide range of healing properties. They are also thought to bring the wearer a sense of balance, harmony and positive thought.

lenses WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING A LENS? NS? Photographers tend to ask k two basic questions over and over again. ain. The first question is, “Which camera should I buy?” The second question is always,, “What lenses do I need?” For the novice photographer - your first lens should be a wide-angle zoom. In terms of point and shoot digital camera zooms, this lens will offer 3x or 4x zoom factor. It’s not a lot of zoom but it’s the perfect lens for general-purpose photography. Your second lens should be a telephoto zoom. These lenses offer approximately 10x zoom. The combination of these two lenses will cover most opportunities that you would want to photograph. The first thing you need to consider when making lens purchases is the specific types of subjects you like to photograph. Here are a few of those scenarios:

LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY a super wide-angle lens.

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY a zoom telephoto lens/macro lens.

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY a fixed focal length lens.

CANDID/STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

almost a general-purpose type of work, so choose the best lens for the moment…

SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY a standard telephoto zoom lens.

STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

in most cases, the wide-angle zoom lenses or wide angle primes are best for this type of work.

do you feel the need for speed? ARE YOU TICKLED BY THE URGE TO BURN SOME SERIOUS RUBBER OR TO TAKE TO THE SKIES LIKE A BIRD? THEN, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE VAST OPTIONS OF RADIO CONTROLLED (RC) PLANES, HELICOPTERS, MONSTER TRUCKS, CARS, BOATS ETC. THE RANGE IS AS LARGE AS YOUR IMAGINATION! Radio controlled vehicles are selfpowered model cars, planes and boats that can be controlled from a distance using a specialised transmitter. The term “RC” has been used to mean both “remote controlled” and “radio controlled”, where “remote controlled” includes vehicles that are connected to their controller by a wire, but the commonly accepted use of “RC” today usually refers to vehicles controlled by a radiofrequency link. Getting started in the RC sport can be intimidating. With so many RC parts and options, it can be a challenge to know where to start. But this needn’t be the case – head to Denkit Hobbies and gain valuable advice from their resident experts

today to get you started on a new and fulfilling pastime. RC gadgets can inspire hours of fun outdoors and caters for all ages and abilities of enthusiasts. Their superbly skilled staff members are on hand to help RC drivers at all levels. RC vehicles are built in different sizes and shapes. In the RC world, “scale” is the word to use for size. Some of the most popular RC car kits are in the 1/10 scale because of their value. One quick way to determine the size of the model is to look at the number after the “1”. As the number after the “1” decreases - the bigger the RC vehicle is, and vice versa. For example, a 1/5 scale RC car is larger than a 1/18 scale RC buggy.

KHALED HOSSEINI WAS R254 NOW R239

JOANNE JOSEPH ONLY R 195

CHANETTE PAUL SLEGS R 215

An unforgettable novel about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else… Khaled Hosseini, the Number 1 New York Times’ bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children, but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honour, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe -from Kabul to Paris, from San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos; the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.

On the verge of a big break in modelling, Miss SA finalist, 21-year-old Vanessa Goosen is caught up in every traveller’s nightmare. Duped into carrying books with 1.7 kilograms of heroin hidden in them, Goosen is arrested and tried on drug trafficking charges.

SPRING INTO SUMMER 2013 |

Deaf to her pleas of innocence, the Thai courts sentence Goosen to death. On appeal her sentence is commuted to life, to be served in Bangkok’s notorious Lard Yao prison. Pregnant, terrified and desperately alone, Goosen begins a harrowing 16-year journey behind bars. Forced to part with her beloved daughter three years later, Goosen’s story traces the joy and hurt of motherhood behind bars, the depression that comes with long-term incarceration and separation, and her return to a hugely changed South Africa in 2010.

CLOVES (LUONG)

CHILLI POWDER

GREEN CARDAMOM (ELAICHI)

These dried and pungently aromatic flower buds are harvested from evergreen trees that grow in hot tropical climates like Indonesia. Used in many Asian, Indian and Western recipes, cloves add a tantalising touch of spicy sweetness to dishes like biryani and spice cake. Medicinal uses: clove tea is believed to alleviate nausea and clove oil is a well-known toothache remedy.

Chillies are known to fight inflammation, relieve pain and lower cholesterol. A selection of chilli powders are available in most Indian spice shops, and are made from a variety of different chillies, each with its own unique colour and flavour. Popular varieties include the red Kashmiri and Reshmapati chilli powders. You can substitute with Cayenne pepper (LalMirch), pictured above.

Cardamom is the seed of a tropical fruit in the ginger family. The pods contain tiny black seeds, which are removed and used whole or powdered, in a wide range of Indian dishes. Also a key ingredient in Garam Masala, cardamom has a distinct sweet, lemony flavour that adds a vital element to Indian curries. Ayurvedic practitioners use cardamom to treat skin and urinary ailments. It is also believed to aid digestion.

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO HELP YOU KEEP THAT GLOSS AND SHINE ON YOUR WOODEN FURNITURE FOR FAR LONGER THAN USUAL. TAKE CARE OF YOUR WOOD, THE RIGHT WAY. 1. Choose a good quality cleaner – free of ammonia. 2. Know about the particular type of wood and the finishing before you clean it.

3. Keep your wooden furniture away from direct sunlight. 4. Take care of temperature and humidity. Wood expands upon absorbing moisture and over a period of time, excessive humidity will lead to cracks.

GREEN TIP: MAKE YOUR OWN NON-TOXIC FURNITURE AND FLOOR POLISH One part of lemon juice along with three parts of olive oil is a wonderful polishing agent. Coconut oil is also an amazing all-natural wood polish that replenishes dry thirsty wood and brings out the beauty of the natural wood grains. It prolongs the lustre of the furniture by helping it not to crack or absorb harmful water moisture that can lead to warping. Use one part vinegar to five parts water as the solution for a damp mop to clean your hardwood floors. Add about 8 drops of an essential oil of your choice.

Magical Cream INGREDIENTS:

breakfast

METHOD:

4 to 6 tablespoons plain yoghurt 1 teaspoon flaxseed oil 1 to 2 tablespoons lemon juice (preferably organic) 1 teaspoon honey 2 tablespoons finely ground cereal (with zero sugar, such as Post Shredded Wheat) 2 teaspoons finely ground walnuts

1. Put the yoghurt in a bowl and add the oil. Mix well. Add the lemon juice and mix well. Add the honey and mix well. (It is important to add each ingredient one at a time and mix well to obtain a homogeneous preparation.) 2. Finely grind the cereal and walnuts (I use a small food processor). Add to the yoghurt mixture and mix well. Serve at once.

CUPCAKES 4 KIDS WITH CANCER We are asking members of the community to help us make a difference by baking and donating cupcakes for this amazing event. Whether you can donate 12, 48 or more, we can ALL make a difference – one cupcake at a time…

As September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Shelly Centre has teamed up with Cupcakes of HOPE, a Non Profit Company to create awareness and funds for children with cancer through our mutual love of CUPCAKES. On Saturday 28 September 2013 from 8h30 to 17h00 on Centre Court outside Pick ‘n Pay we will be selling cupcakes donated by ourselves and members of the community to raise funds for charities such Reach For a Dream, CANSA, CHOC and The Sunflower Fund. The money raised will go towards medical treatment, travelling costs, school fees, clothing and the day to day living expenses of children suffering with cancer.

If you’re not a baker, simply join us on the 28 September and indulge for a good cause. Cupcakes will be sold for R10 each with all proceeds going to Cupcakes of HOPE and their affiliated charities. Let’s make September the 28th the SWEETEST DAY of the year! To pledge donations, please contact Tessa on 039 315 1337 or tessa@primelife.co.za. Handmade IS GREEN AND GLAM!

USE YOUR IMAGINATION TO MAKE YOUR OWN OR SUPPORT LOCAL CRAFTERS‌

CRAFTY IDEAS: 1. Collect bits of driftwood, twine, beads, dried seeds and flowers, hessian, bits of fabric, felt, buttons, ribbon, handmade paper, cardboard and wire. With a bit of inspiration you can transform the simplest items into adorable tree decorations. 2. Instead of buying new decorations, add a

handmade touch to old baubles and bells with a splash of paint, some glue, buttons, sequins and glitter.

3. Recycle bits of used Christmas gift wrap by transforming them it into festive paper garlands.

4. Visit your local library or bookshop for a book on origami. Folding colourful paper decorations is a great way to occupy the kids on a rainy day. 86
