PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome to round 4 of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) with the Perth Spirit taking on the Canberra Vikings who come to Perth with an unbeaten record following their most recent win over the Greater Sydney Rams. The Spirit will be seeking their first win of this year’s Championship and there is no better team to do it against than Canberra.

Drawing their players from the ACT and Southern New South Wales the Canberra Vikings have a strong squad, which will truly test the young guns from the Perth Spirit. It is this kind of opportunity to take a step up in class that many of our younger Perth Club based players have previously lacked and will now welcome. It is also an opportunity for fringe Western Force players to push their credentials with selectors.

I have been particularly impressed with the speed of the game in this year’s NRC. This has largely come about through the modified scoring system which supports and encourages teams to back themselves to score tries. The incentive of having one converted try scoring eight points means that teams will turn down penalty attempts preferring to have a go. This high paced game must challenge the fitness and conditioning of the players requiring them to be at their peak.

MATCH PREVIEW The Perth Spirit return home to McGillivray Oval today for their fourth match of the 2015 Buildcorp NRC season against the UC Canberra Vikings.

The Spirit head into the match on the back of a 45-24 result against the Sydney Stars at Leichhardt Oval. The Spirit lead at half time 1613, but could not hold on as the Sydney Stars showed their strong form and ran over the top of the Spirit in the last 20 minutes of the game.

The Vikings head west sitting pretty in second position after an undefeated start to their 2015 campaign. The Vikings triumphed 58-26 over the Rams last round and will be keen to keep their good form rolling to set themselves up for the rest of the season.

The sides last met in the opening round of the 2014 Buildcorp NRC with the Spirit getting up 28-23 thanks to a 78th minute try from Ammon Matuauto.

PERTH SPIRIT Today’s Spirit line-up sees head coach Tai McIsaac make 10 changes to the run-on-XV that took on the Stars last round, including the return of fan-favourite Angus Cottrell.

Cottrell, who will captain the West Australian side today has been in exceptional form for the Spirit so far this season and the gritty backrower will look to once again lead from the front and steer the Spirit towards their first win of the season.

Partnering Cottrell in the back-row will be Kane Koteka. The Future Force talent has been in outstanding form and is hoping to keep up his work rate after missing the past two weeks through injury. The Wests Scarborough product has had a magical year, making his Super Rugby debut and then going on to hold his spot for 10 more games.

Francois van Wyk and Ross Haylett-Petty both return to the starting line-up for today’s match after missing the trip to Sydney. The pair will have added motivation for the clash after resigning with the Western Force earlier in the week and they will be keen to show the West Australian rugby community what they have to look forward to for years to come.

Ammon Matuauto returns for his second start of the 2015 season after taking on Brisbane City in Round One. The Associates outside centre was one of the Spirit’s standout performers in his seven matches in 2014 and worked his way into the Western Force’s wider training group.

Matuauto will be keen to perform once again with last season’s match winning try against the Vikings fresh in his mind.

Continuing the strong club presence across the backline, Kalamunda’s Daley Harper comes into the starting line-up at fullback as the Spirit’s last line of defence.

CANBERRA VIKINGS After a bye in Round One the Vikings have posted back-to-back wins to sit second on the table.

Rugby experience to the Canberra side’s pack and the Spirits ability to match the Vikings up front will no doubt prove pivotal in the outcome of today’s match.

The Canberra side had a disappointing season in 2014, missing the finals despite their talented roster. A win today could set the Vikings up for a strong season as they strive for a top-four finish.

The Spirit pack will need to be at its best to counter the Vikings front-row which boasts ACT Brumbies stars Allan Alaalatoa and Ben Alexander and former Western Force hooker Robbie Abel.
