RULES USED WHEN USING COLLEGE GRAMMAR • Australian English Dictionary setting used for spell check
• A student’s year in the form (Y12) is included after their name
• Add the correct spelling of student names and other schools to your dictionary. A custom dictionary containing this information is available from the Marketing Team
• A teacher (in text) is referred to as Mr Smith (if there is more than one Mr Smith, include the initial of his first name, Mr J Smith) for the Grammarian. For the Thistle use the full name, Mr John Smith
• When referring to Emmanuel use capital ‘E’ - Catholic College capital ‘C’ • Always refer to Emmanuel Catholic College. Do no use “ECC” abreviation
• When an adult signs off on an article, use their title and full name in addition to placing their school position underneath their name, for example – Mr John Smith - English Teacher
• Capital letters for subjects and houses (e.g. English), and also capital ‘H’ when specifically referring to house, e.g. the students wore their House shirts
• When a student signs off on an article, do not include a title and substitute their position at the school for their year level or leadership position, if relevant, for example – Jack Frost - School Captain
• Plural Years (with capital Y) when referring to several year groups, e.g. Year’s 7, 8 and 12
• Book titles, film titles, play titles, song titles are all written in italics or single quotation marks
• Team lists should be in alphabetical order with correct spelling of names. When referring to teams we use 1st, 2nd and 3rd, Eg 1st Frassati House
• Quotes are italics and enclosed by single quotation marks (double quotation marks for quotes within a quote)
• Sport names are lower case, e.g. basketball, except when referring specifically to a team, e.g. the Kings or Aces
• Single quotation marks can be used for emphasis
• A sport mentioned in isolation is in lower case
• We excelled in basketball this year
• A specific sporting team is in title case
• The Senior Debating Team gained first place
• A specific sporting event is title case
• The Junior Netball Final was thrilling
• A person’s title within a team is title case
• Joe Bloggs was appointed Cricket Captain

• Numbers one to ten are written in full, eleven upwards as numerals • Term One not Term 1 • Year 7 (Capital Y then the year as a numeral) • In formal letters not to abbreviate – eg HOY, HOLA, arvo, LOL • Dates are written as 3 November 2017, not November 3rd, 2017 • Avoid ALL CAPITALS in body copy – it appears as shouting • Use the Thesaurus to find alternative adjectives but only one per noun • Single space between sentences
