Letter from the Editor Spring, a reviving season full of growth. As Spring reaches it’s zenith with bursting flowers and warmer & longer days, we will find ourselves also bursting with growth and drive. We will yearn for more knowledge and in turn search for deeper self reflection. This season’s publication is all about growth and knowledge within Charleston and yourself. Here we will share a rejuvinating day spent on Sullivan’s Island, caring for a houseplant, learn at the museums, and more. It is important people are inspired and encouraged to thrive. These tools we share are the keystone to growth.

With that being said, take the information you learn from this publication and use it to dive deeper into Charleston and yourself.

Houseplant Hobby with Meeting Green

A

re you a millennial, gen-z, or someone searching for a new hobby to start? This is your chance to join the houseplant phenomenon taking over apartments and homes of millennials. This spring season, we are guiding you to finding the best plant for you at Meeting Green, a plant nursery in downtown Charleston, to kick start your newest hobby.

Here is Kendal Leonard to tell you how she got her start as a business owner in the city and how she built a city of garnders. “I started Meeting Green with my partner because we had an interest in developing a place that can elevate urban life. With Meeting Green located right in downtown, we can share our love of foliage and plants with others. We offer many services

from Exterior Spatial Planning to Residential and Commercial Interiorscape.”

A Guide to Choosing Your First Plant With a little more knowledge about Meeting Green’s love for a green urban life, assistance in spatial planning, and what sets them apart from others, we are able to pick our first houseplant and start a new hobby at home.

Since it is springtime, let’s choose a plant that can thrive during any times of the year, epecially this time of the year. Epipremnum aureum also referred to as Pothos are amazing beginner plants for the spring (Loughrey, n.d.).

Pothos can be found in Meeting

Green’s greenhouse. Pothos thrive in bright indirect sunlight and enjoy being watered once a week or till the soil at the top has dried out. They can grow up to 6-10 feet long in homes; in their natural habitat, you can see them grow 30-50 feet.

Once you have picked out your Pothos, head to the shop where you can pick out a pot and a watering can. Picking the right pot is important, not only do you want something stylish and that can flow in your home, but you also want to find a pot that has good drainage to help you avoid root rot.

With everything picked out, you can head home with your new plant and pot then start your newest hobby.

Caring for Your Pothos If You See These Issues Water your Pothos if you see brown or yellow leaves or the leaves start to shrivel. Move to more light if there is a loss of color. If leaves are pale place in less light Rub 70% alcohol on affected areas if you see pests. Be sure to let soil dry to avoid fungus gnats.

MUSEum Muse – a person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist.

E

very artist has something that sparks an interest and excites their imagination, a muse. A muse is a person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist. The beautiful thing that makes artists and designers unique among others is their interpretation of their muses.

The best place to appreciate a collection of muses by artists is in an art museum. The Gibbes museum of art, the Gibbes, is located off Meeting Street. The Gibbes offers art and history as

one. It was founded in 1858 as the Carolina Art Association. It is by 1905 the building today hosts the association and starts the foundation of the museum.

I had the opportunity to speak with Gibbes museum member, Julia Kipp. Kipp says, “Many pieces that reside in the Gibbes were among the first to be displayed for the public when it first opened in 1905”. She says, “These pieces are pivotal to the integrity of the museum and add further historical value to the museum and its artistic place in Charleston as a museum”.

Exhibitions The 18th and 19th Century American Paintings and Sculpture, and Decorative Arts, 20th Century American Regionalism and the Charleston Renaissance, Betwixt and Between, Mary Jackson Modern and Contemporary Gallery, and Miniature Portraits are among the five permanent collections.

Fighters for Freedom One of Kipp’s favorite exhibitions is The Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice collection by William H. Johnson, a Florence, South Carolina born artist. The Fighters for Freedom painted in the 1940s showcases the fight for justice and freedom throughout history through paintings. Kipp says, “The thing that makes this collection not only powerful, but beautiful are the vivid colors and the subtle artistic and historical elements that he includes in the paintings”.

Temporary collections like A New Deal: Artists at Work and Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice is available to view till August 7th of 2022. The newest collection is the William Eggleston: Photographs from the Laura and Jay Crouse Collection that will be available till October 9th of 2022.

The Gibbes has deep roots and ties to Charleston. They to incorporate relavent works in the museum and give insightful historical information about the work of art and artist. This museum is great for locals and tourists alike looking for historical and artistic works of art from all backgrounds.

Sullivan’s Island Escape

J

ust off the coast of Charleston is a little two and half mile island barrier known to Charlestonians as Sullivan’s Island, Sullivan’s. Sullvan’s is home to 2,000 residents and a beloved island to the rest of the Charleston population. With 32 beach stations along the shore, residents and beach go-ers are sure to find a place to soak in the sunrays and enjoy the weather.

The small island sits next to Isle of Palms and is just minutes from Mount Pleasant and downtown Charleston.

Sullivan’s exclusive small island feel helps give people a space to relax and enjoy time alone. Don’t worry about the exclusivity, there’s still lots of things offered off Middle Street. Middle Street is where all the businesses are and is the main street that connects each side of the island to the other. They have a lot to offer within a quarter of a mile such as an Irish Pub, Mexican, BBQ, and an ice cream shop and more.

Let’s dive into having the perfect day on Sullivan’s. From sunrise to sunset, you are bound to enjoy the day soaking in the sunrays and eating good food or shopping at little boutiques.

To start your day, driving to Station 31 for a bright and warm sunrise. The sunrises closer to the eastern part of the island. Sometimes you can even see pods of dolphins as the sunrises.

After the sunrises you can head to The Co-Op for a little breakfast and coffee. The Co-Op is a Sullivan’s and

Isle of Palms cafe for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The Co-Op hours: Sunday – 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Monday – 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Tuesday through Thursday – 8 a.m. 8 p.m.

Friday & Saturday – 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Once you’re done with breakfast, head to Station 29 for the best beach access. There’s a sandbar farther out in the ocean that many people like to walk on. Be sure to go when there’s low tide though because it’s safer then.

Finally, you’ve hit noon and it’s time for a good lunch to nourish you after relaxing in the sun. Go back to The Co-Op because they have the best sandwiches and drinks to bring back to the beach. After a long day in the sun, a good sandwich is going to replenish your body and get you fueled to play more beach volleyball or spike ball.

To end the last minutes of light, I recommend heading to the other side of the island and going to the Fort Moultrie parking lot and enjoying the rest of the day. At the Fort Moultrie

beach access, you can see Fort Sumter, downtown Charleston, and little bits of the Ravenel Bridge. There you can watch the sunset over the horizon past Fort Sumter.

Now that the sun has set, head to Mex 1 Cantina off Middle Street for some good tacos. This is the best way to end the day, at a good resturant with good service and good food.

This is how to have the best day full of beautiful views, good food, and great memories.

A

junior at College of Charleston, or CofC, Ally Bishop, is taking everyone through her tote bag and her necessities to be a successful student.

Bishop studies Studio Art at CofC. She says, “I live a few blocks from campus and couple of different coffee shops around town, so carry little essentials in my tote bag to help me separate things in my tote and things for my backpack.”

Let’s dig through her tote bag and discover all the things she carries. To start, Bishop a tote bag from local coffee shop, The Harbinger Cafe & Bakery.

“I love this tote bag because the canvas is durable and the design is stylish, yet subtle” says Bishop.

“The first thing I see in my bag is my iPad” says Bishop, “I carry this as an alternative than carrying aroung my

laptop, I can sync different apps and emails, so that it can help me work easily and remotely. Moving on I love to keep a book with me in case I catch myself sitting in a park or in a coffee shop.”

Next, her must have essentials are her notebook, phone, pen, pepper spray, airpods, hand sanitizer, gum, and lip balm.

“Each of these are just things that keep me safe and allow my creativity to continue” says Bishop.

“I carry sunglasses in my tote bag in case the sun shines brighter one minute and the next, not as much” says Bishop, “I normally don’t carry my SD cards in my tote bag, but I tossed them in here

after my session in the library because I needed them when I was transferring things to my computer.”

Bag and accessory company, Baggu, is a new find for Bishop.

She discovered their reusable grocery bag and has been keeping it in her tote in case of a quick last minute trip to the store.

Lastly in her tote are her two film cameras.

“I carry two film cameras because I love the convience of a point and shoot (the Kodak), but higher quality photos that come out of the Olympus.”

What makes a tote bag so trendy these days among Gen Z is the practicality. They’re cheap and can hold a lot. They offer convience and foster success for students and employees. After getting a look in Bishop’s bag, we can see a conexisitence in academics and personal life. She is able to have a bag that allows her to be successful among her peers.

Coffee Crave

T

he best thing to get your morning started or pull you through the rest of the day is a good cup of coffee. Charleston’s coffee culture is one the newest hot commodities in the city. With dozen of coffee shops within downtown, you are bound to find a place with beautiful vibes and even better coffee.

There is a special art to mastering an inviting ambiance in a space that also serves great coffee and food. Here to talk more about the best places to cure coffee cravings in Charleston is Mallory McDunn, a junior at College of Charleston, CofC. McDunn favors shops sister shops The Harbinger Cafe & Bakery and Harken because she feels like they have mastered the balance of ambiance and good coffee.

Harbinger Cafe & Bakery Co-founded in 2017 by best friends, Cameron Neal and Greer Gilchrist, Harbinger Cafe & Bakery is located uptown off King Street. A quaint coffee shop that serves delicious lattes, bakery goods, and lunches. Their enviornment is inviting, busy, and stylistic allowing many students to find a comforting place to study.

McDunn says, “One thing that makes Harbinger unique from other coffee shops is their vintage style paired with urban life.” The shops gives many people a small space to escape the urban life of downtown. From the vintage trinkets on their shelves to their china dishes, people are invited to escape the street busyness while remaining in an urban area.

1107 King Street

Harken Two years after opening Harbinger, Neal and Gilchrist opened another coffee shop in the French Quarter. Slightly north of Broad Street off Queen Street is sister, Harken, in the midst of the busy downtown attractions.

Much like Harbinger, Harken has picked up a lot of business. Business not only comes from the good coffee and food they serve, but the historical charm and convinent location to many tourist attractions. What separates Harken from Harbinger and other shops is it’s historical details that create a space that invites people to the charm of not only the shop but the city.

“Harken is a great spot to socialize and catch up with people. They have a designated seating area that restrictions laptops being used, so you can really enjoy your friend’s company,” says McDunn “But don’t worry, if you’re looking for a spot to get some work done, they have seating outside and inside to get it in.”
