Gaastra, established in 1897
...“Once captured by the sailing spirit, your heart belongs to the sea forever” - Douwe Gaastra, 1897.
Famous for making high quality yacht sails, Douwe Gaastra set up his sail-making company 125 years ago, in 1897.
His sail-making company in Sneek, a wealthy trading city in Friesland in the Northern part of Holland, was a sail loft in an era when yachts from all over the world came mooring in the port of Sneek to trade all kind of goods.
Transport was mainly done by sail boats back in the days. Next to the history of Sneek, the Northern part of Holland is well known of building flatboats, yachts which dominate the sea landscape in Friesland already for ages. The sail plan and manufacturing of sailcloth was mainly done by hand. Douwe Gaastra’s signature was making topnoth sails executed with great craftsmanship, preciseness of each detail, focussing on improving the strength and the flexibility of the sails.
His spirit lives on in every Gaastra product today. Gaastra Sportswear focusses on creating nautical lifestyle apparel with an unique mixture
of functionality and contemporary fashion. With remarkable eye for detail, each garment reflects the love for the nautical world and its iconic lifestyle.
Gaastra uses cutting-edge technology in waterprotection and exclusive materials to provide the best possible comfort and protection under all heavy weather conditions. Looking back through the ages of sailing generates each season the inspiration to create beautiful products, reinvent iconic classics, with sometimes a distinct vintage, richly weathered personality translated in seawashed looking garments.
The love for history and the respect for pure craftsmanship is a key story for the Gaastra brand.
