Noviembre es un mes de esos que mi profesor de geografía denominaba valle, siempre fue un hombre de símiles curiosos.

Hoy en día, que las fronteras temporales quedan difuminadas por los calendarios comerciales no me atrevo a hacer esa aseveración. Pese a ello nos lo hemos planteado como tal.

November is what my Geography teacher called a "valley" month. He was always prone to curious comparisons.

Today, as temporal boundaries are set by commercial calendars and considerations, I don't know if I dare make that assertion. Nevertheless, we have approached it that way.

Jazz, after a century after its inception, is performed by an array of artists featuring a broad range of different styles, but with one thing in common: the desire to convey the music in a fresh, young and liberating way. Jazz Madrid kicks off with an adventurous concert by the group headed up by the Cameroonian bassist and singer Richard Bona, and wraps with the debut of British crooner Anthony Strong, presenting his latest album "On a Clear Day." La mujer en la Roma del imperio tenía un rol muy limitado en cuanto a la vida pública, todo lo contrario a lo que pasaba en la vida íntima. Su papel fue destacado superando en importancia a las féminas de otras civilizaciones antiguas. El arte que se muestra en la Obra Social de Caixa Forum da muestra de ello. Formada por ciento setenta y ocho piezas procedentes de los fondos del Louvre, cuarenta y siete de ellas se exponen por primera vez tras haber sido sometidas a un proceso de restauración.

Women in the Roman Empire had very limited roles in public life, but dominated the domestic sphere, even more than in other ancient civilizations. The art on display at the Obra Social de Caixa Forum demonstrates this. Consisting of 178 pieces from the Louvre’s collection, 47 of them are on display for the first time, after having undergone restoration work.

A new version of the legend of the demigod: Hercules. As the years went by his fame was preserved in the Roman theaters in the provinces thanks to circus performances. His is a story that reflects what, in the end, every human being yearns for: to have lived a life of adventure without ever having given up his sense of justice, loyalty and the pursuit of an impossible dream: eternal happiness.

Esa es la intención del terrorífico Cabaret Maldito, un show con una temática espeluznante y humorística que combina las maravillas del circo con los personajes que aparecen en tus peores pesadillas. AHORA 100 AÑOS Cuando recién se cumplen cien años del primer conflicto que hizo tambalear la existencia del viejo continente, Ahora 100 años pretende, eludiendo en todo momento nombrar explícitamente la contienda y sustituyendo los motivos geopolíticos por los artísticos, desempolvar la memoria y despertar la conciencia de la fugacidad del bienestar y la seguridad frente a la barbarie. A través de las vanguardias artísticas anteriores a la I Guerra Mundial, expresadas por medio de la danza y la música, se presentan los cuatro ámbitos geográficos principales del conflicto bélico: el germano, el francés, el austro-húngaro y el italiano. El actor, Esteban Bruno, relata los aspectos más característicos de cada ámbito estableciendo un paralelismo con la sociedad actual de manera que el espectador se sienta identificado y no consiga discernir si el relato corresponde a los años anteriores a la Gran Guerra o al presente. La maravillosa voz del violonchelo de Marina Barba le acompaña en ese viaje por los rincones del conflicto y juntos, ambos cuerpos, se funden en un alegato antibelicista que te expande el alma y te sobrecoge por su belleza.

Es un espectáculo para todos los públicos, un acercamiento interdisciplinar a la Danza, un montaje valiente y lleno de poesía que trata de llenar de luz uno de los momentos más oscuros de la humanidad.

Upon the centennial of the conflict that threatened the Old Continent's existence and shook it to its core, 100 Years Now aims - avoiding explicit references to the war, and replacing geopolitical elements with artistic ones - to evoke the past and elicit a heightened awareness of the fleeting nature of our well-being and security in the face of barbarism. Through the avant garde artistic movements prior to World War I, expressed through dance and music, the War's four main geographic spheres are represented: Germany, France, Austro-Hungary and Italy.

Actor Stephen Bruno conveys the most characteristic aspects of each area, establishing parallels with modern society so that audiences can identify and are not quite sure whether the story is about the years prior to the Great War or the present day. The wonderful sounds of Marina Barba's cello accompany him on this journey to the corners of the conflict, as together the figures fuse in an anti-war statement that expands the soul and thrills with its breathtaking beauty.

It is a show for all audiences, an interdisciplinary approach to Dance, a brave production full of poetry that seeks to fill one of humanity's darkest moments with light.

LOS HERMANOS KARAMÁZOV *"Fiódor Echanove" Desde que se desveló la programación del CDN para esta temporada, los amantes del teatro no veían (aplíquese también la primera persona del plural) el momento de enfrentarse a Juan Echanove desde el patio de butacas. Será necesario procurar todos los sentidos despiertos para ver como Fiódor Karamázov coge forma mediante el talento y profundidad del actor.

La ecuación para resolver a Dostoievski no tiene incógnitas, sino nombres propios. La versión de José Luis Collado tiene el gusto de contar con la dirección de Gerardo Vera, que vuelve a la que durante tiempo fue su casa. El próximo 20 de noviembre se desvelará al público este proyecto que tanto tiempo ha tardado en hacerse realidad. Juan Echanove es Fiódor Dostoievski y se sube a las tablas del Valle-Inclán. El Festival de Otoño a Primavera sigue ofreciendo espectáculos en los Teatros Canal. Un encuentro de artes escénicas que ofrece un programa multidisciplinar en el que se dan la mano creaciones de teatro contemporáneo, danza y música de la más alta calidad. Del 25 al 29 de noviembre, Teatros Canal acoge ‘40 años de paz’, que pretende ser cuatro obras en una. Cuatro protagonistas. Cuatro narradores. Los personajes son protagonistas de su propia historia, al tiempo que son secundarios o narradores en otras, formando una rueda en la que unos se van pasando el testigo a otros.

Y a continuación, del 9 al 12 de diciembre una innovadora y original creación que explora de forma inusitada al hombre y sus máquinas: ‘Golem’.

No sólo de letras se alimenta la BNE. Desde el 6 de noviembre, y siendo una de las principales citas en su calendario expositivo, los grabados arrebatan el protagonismo a los signos caligráficos. Bajo el título Rubens, Van Dyck y la Edad de Oro del grabado flamenco la Biblioteca Nacional nos muestra su magnífica colección de grabados del siglo XVII en la Sala Recoletos. En la muestra además se pueden contemplar cuatro pinturas cedidas por el Museo del Prado para la cita.

The BNE (National Library) is about more than just letters.

Starting on 6 November, and representing one of the main events on its calendar of exhibitions, engravings take over from calligraphic design. Entitled Rubens, Van Dyck and the Golden Age of Flemish Engraving, the National Library places its magnificent collection of 17th-seventeenth century engravings on display at the Sala Recoletos. The exhibition also features four paintings on loan from the Museo del Prado for the event.

The Flemish school always demonstrated a predilection for engravings. Two figures were particularly vital to this artistic genre: Peter Paul Rubens and Antoon van Dyck, who predominate in the exhibition's first two sections. Rubens and the Best Engravers of His Works, and Van Dyck, a disciple of Rubens and an extraordinary portrait artist. Not overly prolific,

prolífica, de Rubens solo se conocen dos grabados atribuidos a él, si sabemos que supervisó la creación de los mejores grabadores para reproducir sus pinturas.

Otro aspecto importante del arte flamenco fue la fuerza que tomaron dos géneros artísticos que habían empezado a crearse de manera independiente en el siglo XVI: el paisaje y las escenas de costumbres, o escenas de género, que en el XVII se desarrollan en su plenitud. Por eso, la tercera sección se dedica a los nuevos géneros artísticos: Paisajes y escenas de costumbres. Esta rama del grabado nos permite conocer como se desarrollaba la vida de los belgas en el siglo XVII. Otra parte importante son los libros ilustrados. La unión de las letras y el grabado se refleja en esta sección: Rubens y las artes del libro. Portadas e ilustraciones que forman parte de la historia.

La última sección Rubens, Van Dyck y el grabado europeo de su época, da a conocer el contexto artístico europeo en el que se desarrollaba el grabado flamenco y las influencias de éste sobre el resto de los países, y viceversa. Se incluyen obras de los mejores grabadores de Europa, como fueron Rembrandt, Callot, Reni... Este apartado se cierra con el grabado en España, donde trabajaron varios artistas flamencos y donde destacan las estampas de José de Ribera, uno de los grandes pintores del Barroco español.

The last section, Rubens, Van Dyck and the European Engravings of their Era, presents the European artistic context in which Flemish engraving developed and its influences on other countries, and vice versa, including works

by Europe's greatest engravers, like Rembrandt, Callot, Reni... This section concludes with engravings in Spain, where several Flemish artists worked, of special note being those by José de Ribera, one of the great painters of the Spanish Baroque.
