Pedestrian street in Malyn
revitilizing pedestrian street, completed project team-work
BUR is NGO in Ukraine, one of the main ideas is to rebuild local community in the entire country, especially in the East. During our 3-weeks working camp in Malyn (Zhytomirska oblast) one of the objects was public space: a pedestrian street in the city center. This street was transformed to pedestrian already for two years, but honestly, it stayed abounded. The aim of project was to bring more life, action, create touristic point. We designed modular outdoor furniture, two wooden platforms and added some colorful navigation along the whole street.

Memorial in Hmilnik
student project by the request of main architect of Hmilnik
In memory of the people, who died during Holodomor 1932-33 in Ukraine this memorial complex was designed. It consists of “cemetery” area, where citizens can honor the memory of victims who were never been buried during that horror times; and “mound” area, stepping in which visitors can get more close experience to the soil and its force and vitality. It gives us source for living and in it we come back after death.

Motivation letter ANNA KULIK
Public spaces have always been an important element in the structure of the city. They were often the epicenter of historical and cultural processes. But today these spaces are rarely / not used at all. I think this is due to the fact that they lost their previous functions, but did not get any new ones. (Active) public spaces and (active) local communities are interconnected things. Public space represents the process in society. In Ukraine today, the vast majority of people do not identify themselves with the environment where they live, are indifferent to the processes that are happening there, but at the same time are not satisfied with the same environment. In my opinion, the reason for this problem is not understanding that space is created by the processes, and processes can not exist without participants. And if you get people’s interest to use public space they can understand that connection. A comfortable city cannot exist without pro-active citizens who are interested in its future. Creating public spaces that motivate people to act must become a trigger for the development of local communities. Nowadays the situation in Ukraine is such that many citizens are keen to change, and in addition, there is an incredible potential for development. But in the minds of people, there are still post-Soviet remnants, concerning the fact that only the authorities can change something, that it is worth to wait until improvement will come. However, as practice has shown, local initiatives are more dynamic and effective. With the activation of local communities, real changes can be made in Ukraine. There will be a change in the minds of citizens when they see and understand that they themselves can change the environment and conditions. As an architect, I`m very curious to learn real tools: how to work with locals, how to communicate with them and create partnership relations, how to encourage them to create small changes by themselves. And want to think deeply on several questions: what exactly to consider a public space; is there a difference between public space and public building; is all of the space in the city public; is publicity available to a limited number of people; how to ensure the activity of public spaces for a long time; how much the spaces differ, depending on the groups of people they use/do not use; is it possible to create an ideal of public space.
