My thesis is to advocate gender mainstreaming into Hong Kong’s built professions and design practices. These are two of my design proposals for gendersensitive design applications to mitigate gender issues in our public space.
I argue that one of the biggest gender issues in public space is privacy concerns and this elevated walkway is one good example of typologies that standardized and engineer-minded design could put users at risk. My design proposal demonstrates that gender-sensitive design can be implemented at different levels: hardware installation like opaque railing; visual enhancements like strategic lighting; and hardscape design like staircase specifications. All of these can work independently or complementary to each other, which designers should decide based on the effectiveness of a solution.

STORAGE SPACE FOR CLEANERS
The second gender typology is public toilets. This location has poor accessibility because the toilet entrance is hidden in an alley between Portland Street and Shanghai Street. I therefore propose redesigning the sitting-out area connects to the toilet by removing all the tall fencing, creating more space for passage and seating, and extending the planter into a momentous hillside that covers a storage room catering to the needs of street cleaners. The openness of the area allows informal surveillance from the main street, which can increase the sense of safety for female users as well.

Design failure
The round beams are too close to the seatings and created an awkward spacing between the seats.
Potential improvement
Remove the round beams or place it away from the seats.
Design language
The use of wood strips and grey coloured steel beams are two main design codes used in this canopy which matches with other structures in the Hoi Bun Road Park. Its curved shape follows the circumference of the round shaped lawn in the centre of the park. The trellis-like structure allows sunlight and wind to come through, at the same time providing some shades during sunset hours.
