Hello there! Let me introduce myself. I’m Chris, your new FXU President Falmouth. My role is primarily to support you and your academic experience whilst you study with us here at Falmouth University. Prior to being elected as President, I studied my degree in BA (Hons) Fine Art at the University’s Falmouth Campus. My three years of study were an incredible experience but the University is constantly growing and changing. I need your help to ensure that when I feed back to all levels of the University that the student voice is both representative and authentic of current students. Working together we can ensure that you are provided with an education that you feel is the best it can possibly be!

Hello and welcome to the University of Exeter Cornwall Campuses! My name is Tom Murray-Richards and I am the FXU President Exeter and a 2016 BA History graduate. My job is to represent the students at the University of Exeter Cornwall Campuses, especially around making sure you get the amazing academic experience you would expect. This year, I will be working on our mentor scheme to give you the best support from the moment you arrive, introduce a loyalty card for students to ease the pressure on your pocket and maximise module choice, along with loads of other things. Part of my job is to keep my ear to the ground and make sure I am being truly representative, and that means that each student has a chance to be heard by the University.
We want you to take advantage of the amazing learning environment here in Cornwall, so we work to make sure you can see improvements to your experience. Whether that is through our amazing student rep system or just by coming to have a chat, I can take forward comments to work with the University and let them know what’s going great and what needs improving. This year is set to be super busy but full of exciting stuff, so come and join us and if you have any problems come see me in the FXU office, or drop me an email. Tom 7

Hello all you beautiful humans and welcome to your time studying and creating in Cornwall! I’m Alexa, your FXU President Community & Welfare. I’m delighted to be representing you for a second year within the role, focusing on everything from equality to volunteering, wellbeing to housing, mental health to faith, and beyond! There is a lot I’m looking to do over the next year, from supporting our liberation groups to fighting for your rights as a student. If you ever need help or support I am here for you, with drop-ins every week at both Penryn and Falmouth Campus. You are always welcome to send me an email or pop into the FXU office. Not only am I here to listen and support but I also make a great cup of tea (if I do say so myself!). I will also be running several campaigns throughout the year, from combating drink spiking to creating a campaign called #ThisIsMyHome, which is about your rights as a student tenant. There is a lot that will be happening this year!

Hi everyone! I’m Amanda (sometimes known as Panda) and it’s my job to represent you on all things fun — that means sports, societies and sustainability! FXU has over 120 sports clubs and societies for you to get involved with and it’s fair to say they cover a wide variety of activities. We have everything from traditional sports like hockey, athletics, football and swimming, to a huge variety of societies from music groups to political societies – and it doesn’t stop there! With martial arts to academic societies; performance groups to outdoor/adventure based sports clubs; to quirkier groups like Quidditch and Harry Potter Society — whatever you fancy doing, I guarantee FXU can help you find the group of students who are keen to meet you and get you involved!
As well as all the above, I’m also your main link to both Universities for all things commercial services - so any queries or feedback you have about campus shops, bars, the gym or facilities, then please let me know. It’s important that your opinions are heard, so any feedback on the campus environment is always welcome!
The best bit is everything we offer is student-led, so if you don’t think your needs are catered for then get in touch and you can be the next leader of a brand new club or society! I also have the privilege of helping students run sustainability projects, schemes and campaigns. Last year was huge for all things green on our campuses and I want to help everyone make this year even more successful. FXU has pots of money you can apply for, so if you have an idea you want to make a reality, then drop me a message (or tweet) and I’ll see how we can help!

FXU is Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union. We are an independent UK charity and our primary charitable objective is the advancement of education of students at Falmouth University and the University of Exeter Cornwall Campuses. We pride ourselves on representation, promoting the interests and welfare of all our students during their studies. This is all set on our campuses in the unique and beautiful Cornish environment. We also provide a range of social, cultural, sporting and recreational activities. Our levels of participation in these activities are exceptional and continue to grow each year. Sport is a huge part of life in Cornwall – it happens naturally here! Whether it’s a quick surf before work, a horse ride across the moors, competitive rugby, football or hockey at the weekend, or the more relaxed evening dance sessions, there really is something for everyone. Our students take advantage of the opportunities Cornwall provides and this is reflected in the range of student-run clubs. We also work closely with community clubs and outside providers, so if we don’t offer an activity, we usually know someone who does. Whilst at university, how about giving a new activity a try? If you feel we don’t have the club you’re looking for, you can always set up your own. FXU SPORTS BURSARY SCHEME FXU Sports Bursaries are available for up to four students of outstanding sporting ability who show evidence of achievement at national level and above. Bursaries are only offered to those applicants who have gained an offer of a place for a Falmouth University or the University of Exeter Cornwall Campuses courses. Each application will be considered on an individual basis, taking into consideration the chosen sport, achievements to date, selection process, league structure and sporting aspirations. Funding can be used towards legitimate costs incurred to train or compete in your chosen sport, including the following: • Gym membership • Travel to competitions • Physiotherapy • Competition entry fees • Essential sports equipment and clothing. People decide to volunteer for a variety of reasons: for some it provides the opportunity to give something back or make a difference to the community around them, for others it provides a chance to develop new skills or gain experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, all find it to be really rewarding.
At FXU, we can help you find a volunteer activity suited to you. We currently work with community arts projects, young people in and out of the school setting, environmental projects, conservation projects, Adult Social Care, animal welfare, charity work and individual placements, but we are always looking to develop and broaden our range of contacts and opportunities.
Becoming a volunteer doesn’t mean you have to take on a huge commitment. We offer many one-off opportunities in addition to assisting students in finding regular placements.

STUDENT-LED VOLUNTEER PROJECTS Student-led projects are set up and run by students, for students. They allow students to share volunteering opportunities that they are passionate about and build a community around them. Projects are free for students to join and often run regular sessions. Volunteering on a regular basis is often more valuable, as responsibility and training is gained over time. It is also great to be part of the projects’ development. What projects are there?

RAD stands for Raise and Donate and that’s exactly what we support you to do - raise money for local, national and internationally recognised charities. The only limit to what counts as a RAD event is your imagination and creativity. We host cakes sales, Jail Breaks, sporting events, charity challenges abroad and much much more. All of these events are made to push your limits, to see how far you are willing to go for charity. Anyone can be RAD!

RAD EVENTS • Challenges Abroad – e.g. climb Mount Everest, Budapest Marathon, Uganda Gorilla Trek and playground building. • Rally4ShelterBox – A 370km, man-powered relay race around the Cornish coast in under 36 hours. • LOST – Students sign up to be “kidnapped” and taken to a secret location. Each team then has to figure out where they are and navigate back to campus as fast as they can, completing challenges along the way. They have to do so with no money and just a map and compass to aid them. • Jail Break - Students have 36 hours to get as far away from campus as possible with no money, relying solely on the kindness of strangers.

Green Living FXU is committed to green and sustainable action. In 2015/16 we were the proud winners of the Green Impact Excellence Award, as well as receiving Gold status for the third consecutive year.

Following the success of the NUS-funded Green Living Project, we are working closely with FX Plus to encourage students to be more actively involved with green policies on campus and to adopt a more green approach in their day-to-day lives. Past projects include trips to organic farms, clothes swaps and building a yurt café and we plan to continue this level of enthusiasm and activism in the coming year. Long-term campaigns include the sale of re-usable water bottles and coffee cups and the Digital Detox, as well as the Green Fund, where students can apply for financial assistance with their own ideas for environmental and sustainable projects. There are opportunities for students to buy fresh, organic produce on campus, plus campaigns to reduce food waste and the use of plastic on campus. We also work closely with student groups to help them to incorporate green ethics into the running of their clubs and societies. Watch out for our Green Living pop-up events during the Freshers period. “Whilst I was President of Tremough English Society, we applied for SLEPF funding for our Capulet Masquerade Ball. The application was fairly straightforward but made us think about the details of the event, such as budgets, health and safety and marketing. FXU helped us in organising and promoting the event too. Tickets sold out within two weeks and there was a real buzz amongst our society members about the ball. Everyone had a fantastic night and the English Society events have really gained a reputation for being some of the best. From my experience with SLEPF, I’ve gained skills in event management, managing budgets, understanding health and safety and influencing people. So you’ve made it to Cornwall and now you’re wondering what’s next? Well, luckily for you, I’m here to help. Here’s a list of everything you need to do by the end of your three years.
1. Eat a Cornish pasty From traditional, to chicken Thai, to apple, rhubarb and custard, there’s a pasty to suit everyone! Oh and remember; no cutlery allowed!
2. Go for a night out in the infamous Club I Sticky walls, carpet and a stamp of shame that never washes off. There’s nothing quite like it.
3. Learn to surf A skill that will last a lifetime and with wetsuits and boards to hire it needn’t be expensive!

4. Watch the sunset over a pint at the Watering Hole in Perranporth A gorgeous beach with an even more gorgeous pub.
5. Order Dominos at 12:59am With a day to go until your deadline, the best reward for that inevitable all-nighter is a cheeky Dominos – just remember to get your order in before the 1am cut-off!
6. Have a BBQ on Gylly Beach Grab a couple of disposable BBQs, some blankets and a couple of guitars and you’ve got a great night ahead of you!
7. Climb up Jacobs Ladder And why not reward yourself with a pint (or even a roast) in the pub at the top?
8. Go to Open Mic Night at the Stannary Bar Every Monday night, the students of Falmouth and Exeter participate in Open Mic Night at The Stannary Bar. It’s sure to be a great night every time!
9. Get in a fight with a seagull An inevitable but crucial component of Cornish life – just make sure to never relinquish your chips!
10. Go to Cod on the Corner So you’re just on the way home from a night out and you’ve got a terrible case of the drunk munchies. There’s only one thing you need and, luckily for you, it’s on the way to the bus stop!
11. Catch a ferry to St Mawes Go for a walk, get lost, climb over barbed wire and explore Cornwall that little bit more.
12. Buy a quirky ice cream at Swanpool Beach There’s nothing quite like these ice creams; covered with a variety of toppings from jelly babies to honey-roasted hazelnuts. They’re definitely not for the faint-hearted!
13. Have a cream tea And make sure it’s the Cornish way! (Jam first, FYI!)
14. Go for a late night walk to Penryn Harbour Watch the lights on the boats, stare at the stars and enjoy the lack of city glare.
15. Grab a drink (or a book) at Beerwolf By far the most unique bar in Falmouth, Beerwolf has a great atmosphere, an awesome drinks menu and even its own book shop!

Transportation options at Penryn Campus
Avoid bringing your car to campus if you can. You’ve come to live in a beautiful place and we’d like to keep it that way, by reducing our impact on the environment as much as possible. Parking is limited on Penryn Campus and there is no student parking on Falmouth Campus. Please use other means of transport to get to campus where possible.
WALKING AND CYCLING
The Universities’ Green Travel Plan makes it easy for you to choose affordable and convenient, environmentally-friendly transport to university. We work with local transport providers to offer special student fares and deals on local routes.
With the close proximity of our campuses to so many facilities it’s easy to get around by bike or on foot, between campuses, to the town centres or to local beaches. The Falmouth and Penryn Active Travel map includes walking, cycling and public transport routes in the area, as well as local cycle shops that offer a student discount.

There are free showers and changing facilities for cyclists, along with secure cycle storage facilities, at both the Penryn and Falmouth campuses. Each campus also has a cycle maintenance point which provides a tyre pump, bike stand and tools for bike repairs.

Thinking back to August 2013, my biggest concern about starting university was whether my choice to live at home would prevent me from integrating into campus life. I was very doubtful about whether I’d made the right decision and had pretty much convinced myself that by choosing to live at home I had consigned myself to three years of lunchtimes in The Stannary alone! Gladly, I can reassure anyone experiencing similar anxieties that choosing to commute to uni has not impacted on my enjoyment of university at all. If you adopt a positive attitude and make the most of every opportunity available, there is no reason why your decision to live off-campus should prevent you from developing a fulfilled and memorable university career. The most important piece of advice I’d give to commuting students is to throw yourself into everything — and start now!

“THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE I’D GIVE TO COMMUTING STUDENTS IS TO THROW YOURSELF INTO EVERYTHING AND START NOW!” Freshers’ fortnight is the perfect time to adopt a no-holds-barred attitude and attend every social event you possibly can. I was lucky to find a like-minded individual who was also living at home during my own Freshers’ fortnight and we car shared to every Stannary event (an agreement we’ve kept even to this day!). The next couple of weeks is a golden time to join societies and establish connections with students who live both on and off campus, making the most of two weeks where it feels like the most natural thing in the world to strike up conversations with complete strangers. Three years after meeting one of my best friends outside the Chapel Lecture Theatre I am still saved in her phone as “Local-dangly earrings”. Getting a job on campus is a great way to meet new friends and immerse yourself in the student community. I starting working as a Student Ambassador in my first year, a role which has not only massively improved my own confidence but has also led me to the heart of campus events and introduced me to like-minded students from all over the world.
I would also urge anyone living at home to keep an open mind with regard to studying abroad. If your course offers you the opportunity to spend a term or year overseas, then give it some serious consideration. Study abroad affords you the opportunity to travel the world and also gives you some time away from home to experience entirely independent living. Things to do in Penryn

Penryn may appear to be less developed than its Falmouth neighbour but it has plenty to offer. Falmouth is only a pound’s bus journey away but, more than likely if you’re living in halls, you are going to be spending a lot of time in Penryn. Nights out and trips to the beach are best left to Falmouth but if you’re looking for pubs, take-aways and shops, as well as to get out and about, then Penryn is your closest answer.

Granite Planet A small rock climbing centre which is improving all the time. Two new areas have just been completed and there are plans for an extension on one section of the wall to make it twice as high as before. Students with the club get a discount as well as free rental and access to trips.
Bike repair and parts The Thirsty Scholar Located at the top of Penryn high street, just around the corner from The Sidings, this pub is Penryn’s most popular with students. It has the same local feel of The Jacob’s Ladder Inn, combined with the arty atmosphere of Beerwolf. An ideal first stop before exploring the other pubs on the high street.
There are a few bike repair shops in Penryn but Bike Works is on the outskirts of the campus itself, on the industrial estate.
AMATA The Academy of Music and Theatre Arts hosts regular music and theatre shows, both student and non-student. It’s right on campus, so you don’t have to go far at all!
No. 20 Wine Bar If you fancy something a little bit more sophisticated, this is for you. A wide range of cocktails and wine and a bit more bar-like than the other places in Penryn.
Sports There’s a lot of free stuff going on in Penryn. There is, of course, the newly built sports centre, the astro turfs on campus and a football field just in front of AMATA.
Raze the Roof Once a month, this kid’s play area and laser-tag arena hosts its adult night: a laser-lit play frame, limitless laser-tag and alcohol-filled slush puppies. Tickets can be bought online.
Open mic nights No. 20 hosts one on Sundays and The Stannary has one on Mondays. There are lots of students at the campus but if you feel like a bit more of a mix then head to No. 20.
Food Just like Falmouth, Penryn has a host of great pubs, restaurants and take-aways. Muddy Beach has just opened on The Wharf and has already shot to the top of the list on Trip Advisor. Explore Penryn before hopping down to Falmouth.

Things to do in Falmouth

Life as a Fresher in Falmouth may seem a daunting prospect; with cobbled streets and stretching landscapes being the common face of the postcards, it may leave you questioning what it has for students to keep you going through your studies. Fortunately there is plenty and something for everyone in the quiet storm of a town which is Falmouth. Firstly, there is Gylly Beach, situated just a short walk from the main high street and a common hangout for students no matter the weather. Whether you’re running about in the waves, laid back on the sand toasting marshmallows with a speaker and friends, or curled up on a sofa inside the gorgeous Gylly Beach Café, warming under the heaters, you’re guaranteed a good time. If you’re into your water sports, or looking to start a new hobby, then you will find WeSup (stand-up paddle boarding), located right on the beach. You can hire out boards and paddle from just £10. There is also the option of group and individual paddle sessions with the instructors. It is a great way to get out in the sea and sun whilst seeing the coast of Falmouth.

If you want to get into the water but don’t fancy the beach, then you will be pleased to hear that right in Falmouth there is the Ships & Castles Leisure Centre, including a flume, wave machine and fitness gym (if you don’t fancy the gym on campus). Taking you back to the main town and into the night you will find an array of bars and pubs, each with their own unique entertainment to take your fancy, ranging from games rooms to book shops and cocktail bars. Despite being a small town there are also a few clubs, namely Club I, a place of cheesy throwback songs, current chart hits and a sticky yet heaving dancefloor, all with the bonus of cheap drinks. There is also Fives, a small ‘underground’ club with frequent themed events and great DJs, where you’re sure to have a sweet night of house tunes.
If you’re not feeling up to a night on the town then you have your choice of cinemas. There is the Phoenix Cinema, where you can watch many of the latest blockbuster releases, or you can pop down to The Poly, a near 200-year-old building which encourages arts and science, with a special focus on Cornwall. Here you can find a choice of foreign, art and festival-winning films, as well as live theatre, comedy and dance. These are shown in the four galleries, which also regularly hold art exhibitions. This is only a select handful of the many activities, events and places you can attend and hangout at while you’re here in Falmouth. I hope this gives you an insight into the many opportunities, future adventures and memories your new home can give you.

Perranporth Perranporth is one of the most famous beaches in Cornwall, with great surf all year round, stunning coastal walks and is the home of the UK’s ‘only bar on the beach’. The Watering Hole serves a variety of food to suit all and also does a wonderful hot chocolate to warm you up after a walk or swim during colder months. As well as this, The Watering Hole is used as a music venue with artists such as Scouting for Girls and The Hoosiers having played there recently. Perranporth also has some great unique shops such as Sama Sama, which offer a range of coastal gifts suitable for any occasion.
The Lizard Lighthouse Open from April to October, the lighthouse offers you the chance to experience for yourself what it is like to run a lighthouse and ensure the upkeep of it. Tours are run throughout the year which allow you to go up into the lighthouse itself and see what makes it work for a fee. There is also a small museum that features stories from past lighthouse keepers, a live ship tracking zone and the opportunity for you to sound a foghorn. Godrevy
Trebah Gardens
Godrevy is a fantastic place for budding photographers and wildlife watchers as it is home to a large colony of Grey Seals that can be seen lying on the beach of Seal Cove at low tide. Seal Cove is located just behind the main grass car park. You can also see them swimming in and around the cove during high tide.
Offering picturesque walks through sub-tropical gardens containing hidden treasures, such as the amphitheatre, which plays host to many live theatre performances, as well as its own secluded beach, Trebah Gardens is a must-see. Perfect if you want a chilled day out - take your wetsuit and go for a swim on the beach, explore the vast gardens or have lunch in Trebah Kitchen.
Godrevy also has a number of beautiful beaches located along the coastal path. Surf lessons are available on the main beach.
Students from Exeter and Falmouth only have to pay £1.50 admission, although it does not state this on Trebah Gardens’ website.
Flambards Family Theme Park
Crantock Beach
More like a fun fair than a theme park, Flambards provides a fun day out for all age groups and offers an amusement arcade and crazy golf, as well as a range of rides - one of the best being their newest ride, Skyraker. Skyraker provides thrill-seekers with a stomach-dropping experience as they are plummeted towards the ground. Occasionally, riders get the added thrill of a helicopter from the RNAS Culdrose base located next door flying close to the ride. During special times of the year, such as Halloween, the park has its own firework display and keeps the rides open later. Also, Flambards is the venue of a huge Christmas market that offers a range of unique and personalised gifts.
Surrounded by dunes, Crantock offers a gorgeous beach walk. You can explore the beach and the dunes, as well as a coastal walk which can be accessed from the left side of the beach at low tide. The coastal path to the left of the beach leads you to a pub called The Bowgie Inn. During clear weather you can sit on the benches outside with a drink and enjoy the breath-taking views from the pub, which is situated on a cliff overlooking Crantock. The pub can also be accessed by car via a narrow lane if you wanted to go directly there.

Breakdown or Breakthrough?
What if we were to look at anxiety and depression in a new light? As a significant part of a process moving us from the old to the new, at both a personal and planetary level. Perhaps depression and anxiety are a ‘healthy’ response to what is out of synch in our lives and the world. Can we begin to listen to the increasingly loud and clear message that it is time to look at ourselves, our lives and our world differently? Our prevailing medical model makes a pathology of dis-ease and then aims to ‘cure’ it. This conventional approach is based on the assumption that becoming ‘well’ means ‘fixing’ our problems and adjusting back to our old story. But what if a new story is trying to emerge? Might it be that we are in danger of killing the messenger? Are we missing the point that our symptoms are letting us know that something is out of balance? Perhaps there is an opportunity to explore rather than suppress our experiences.
Revisioning anxiety and depression Crisis and suffering in our lives can herald a rebirth beyond our imaginings if we can find the courage to listen to our internal wisdom and knowing.

Last year I graduated with a 2:2 in American Studies from the University of Leicester. I enjoyed the course but at times thought that perhaps it wasn’t for me. Whilst I loved the modules in film and literature, I fell behind slightly in the history and politics modules, no matter how much I appreciated the subject matter. So when it came to my final year, I decided I would take another crack at university. I had always been quite passionate about writing but didn’t want to do another degree that didn’t have a clear vocational outcome. By this point, a friend of mine from back home in Wales had been at Falmouth for three years, with one more to go. We always used to joke that she was silly for having gone to such an out-of-the-way university and that she should have gone somewhere more prominent like the rest of us (we had gone to places like Leicester, Liverpool, London). But she remained adamant that it was one of the greatest places she had ever lived. And it just so happened that Falmouth did their own unique Professional Writing MA; something that combined creative writing with a look into the business side of things.

So I went to an Open Day, in spite of my childhood claim that I would never return to Cornwall after a miserable holiday. I’m glad I did because the course itself seemed amazing. We’re now 17 months on from that open day and I’m coming to the end of my Masters Degree. In that time, I’ve handed in some of the best work I’ve written in any educational establishment, made a fantastic group of friends, encouraged by my tutors to do my best at all times, made industry connections that will no doubt help me in later life and held a part-time job. In fact, it’s safe to say that, university-wise, I definitely prefer Falmouth to Leicester. The courses seem better and the campus itself is lovely. Despite doing a degree that has ‘writing’ in the title, I haven’t necessarily learned how to write better but I have learned how to find a job in the writing industry.
As for Falmouth itself? Some argue that there isn’t much to do here. People who come from the bigger cities in particular may be a bit lost for things to do but anyone who appreciates the small town lifestyle will feel right at home. There’s a wealth of pubs and quirky shops at your disposal and, if you have a car, then there’s beautiful things to experience all around the county.
