Welcome to FXU Freshers! Over the next couple of weeks we plan to showcase what we, and the campus, have to offer during your time studying in Cornwall. We’re starting this year with 94 different sports clubs and societies! Take a look through our Activities Directory to see what takes your fancy and get stuck in with the various taster sessions which are on offer FOR FREE! That’s right, there are no membership fees until AFTER Freshers. We’ve also got volunteering activities, environmental projects and, of course, the big Stannary nights. So whether you want to have a go at Quidditch, join a sports team or walk around dressed like a zombie, we’ve got you covered. Sunday 14th September Shinty Taster Session 14:00-16:00 Falmouth School Rugby Club Shinty is an ancient Scottish stick sport. Similar to the Irish sport of Hurling it is definitely something to try whilst at university. It is perfect for people wanting to try a new sport, keep fit, meet friends and enjoy an active social life. Some lifts from campus or Falmouth may be available - contact Tom for information t.carlin@live.co.uk Meet Your Mentor (Exeter undergraduates) 16.00-17.30 DDM Seminar Space A great opportunity for undergraduate students to come along and Meet Your Mentor (a second or third year on the same course as you) as well as other Freshers. Don’t worry if you haven’t registered in advance, just turn up! Renewable Energy & Sustainability Society 20.00 onwards Upper Stannary If you have an interest in renewables or sustainability, you should come and meet up with a group of like-minded people for casual drinks in the Upper Stannary Bar. CSMSA: Formal Meet and Greet 19:00-23:00 Rebel Brewery Come along to the Stannary to meet and greet your fellow Camborne School of Mines students. Once everyone is together we will then walk down to Rebel Brewery, CSM’s local watering hole. At the brewery there is a growing collection of CSM memorabilia, here you’ll be able to find out about the history of the mining school and get to know your peers for the next few years. Monday 15th September FXU Loves You 09.00-17.00 Penryn Campus FXU President Community & Welfare and the Student Voice team are leading a drugs and alcohol awareness week. Information and events at various locations on campus all week. Whether you prefer it the Cornish or Devonshire way, we’d love to see you there. Evening Prayer: Introduction to the Orthodox Community 18.00-18.30 Multifaith Chaplaincy, Glasney View H Fr Nikitas, our Orthodox Chaplain, will lead a short time of reflection open to all, which will include a couple of readings and some Orthodox prayers, after which there will be light refreshments and a chance to chat informally to Fr Nikitas and find out about the Orthodox community in Cornwall. Rugby: Training 18.30-20.00 Penryn Rugby Club All abilities welcome to take part in competitive rugby. We currently compete in the Tribute Cornwall 1 league with a 1st XV. We will also be organising friendly matches for a 2nd XV for the year. Wear normal rugby kit: t-shirt and shorts that you don’t mind getting dirty/torn, plastic moulded or round studded for the 5

Yoga and Pilates: Pilates Session 19.00-20.00 Performance Centre Studio G The Yoga & Pilates society have regular sessions throughout the year. Come along to our Pilates sessions on campus. Tang Soo Do: Open Taster Classes 20.30-22.00 Performance Centre Studio F Anyone can come along regardless of ability/experience/fitness etc. Just wear comfortable, loose clothing and come and have a go! We’ll give you a really good flavour of what Tang Soo Do is all about and you’ll walk away having learnt something new, made some new friends and having had some real fun! Pirate Party 21.00-02.00 The Stannary Buckle some swash in style at FXU’s first major Freshers event. Free entry with wristband before 10pm or £10 on the door. LGBTQ: Meet and Greet 16.00-17.30 Upper Stannary Come to the Stannary to get to know your LGBTQ community, say hello to the committee and find out what our society is all about. Allies and individuals who are questioning their sexuality or gender identity are very much welcome. You can find us easily by spotting our big rainbow flag. Lacrosse: Taster Session 17.00-20.00 MUGA (Penryn Campus) The Freshers Taster Session will be a great way for Freshers who have never played lacrosse to come and try it out. Volleyball: Taster Session 17.45-19.45 Penryn College Sports Hall FXU Volleyball Club welcomes all volleyball abilities - from those who haven’t touched a volleyball to those with years of experience - offering coaching to all standards. creating a supportive team spirit and having fun! Whether it’s for taking part in the competitive league, just for fun, or somewhere in-between, then we would love to have you along to join us! Penryn Ladies Rugby 18.30-20.00 Penryn Rugby Club Fancy some fun and fitness? Don’t mind the occasional bit of mud? Penryn ladies are a competitive ladies rugby team that welcomes players of all abilities, from those that have never touched a rugby ball or watched a match, to those that have been playing club rugby for years. Pub Quidditch 20.00 onwards Meet at the Stannary Bar, Penryn Campus A pub tour with a twist… Meander through the streets of Falmouth with the Falmouth Falcons taking part in challenges and completing your Quidditch “Game” to become a Champion. TES: The Odyssey Pub Tour 21.00 onwards Meet at the Stannary Bar, Penryn Campus A literary themed night out colossus. With challenges to show off the best of Falmouth Town and a fantastic committee to meet, come and enjoy an epic adventure not to be missed with the Tremough English Society. EcoSoc: Camera Trapping 12.00-15.00 Meet outside the revolving doors of The Exchange, Penryn Campus Learn how to use camera traps and record footage of wildlife in the local area. Lacrosse: Taster Session 14.00-16.00 MUGA (Penryn Campus) The Fresher’s Taster Session will be a great way for Freshers who have never played lacrosse to come and try it out. Wear suitable sports clothing. Kit will be provided. Climbing: Boulder BBQ 15:00-20:00 Gylly Beach BBQ and climbing in the sun on Gylly Beach. Enough said. What could be better? Get yourselves to Gylly Beach for an informal introduction to the club, some chilled boulder climbing and some food. FXOrchestra: Rehersal Taster Session 16:00-19:00 The Chapel Lecture Theatre, Penryn Campus Friendly taster session for anyone who plays an orchestral instrument. All abilities are welcome and there is no audition. Refreshments will be provided.
