It’s the final term of the academic year but we’re certainly not winding down. There’s plenty to keep you entertained and encourage you to take a break from final deadlines and revision. Beat the blues by taking a trip down our slip and slide, ‘paws’ your stress with some puppy cuddles and party on down at our annual Garden Party and Graduation Ball—plus loads more! Sports and Societies Volleyball Training on Gylly beach every Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm – 7pm (weather dependent). £2 per person. Keep an on our Facebook page to keep up to date.

Enactus BEE Project Fundraising Events Monday 16th May The Bee Elephant Enterprise Project (BEE), which is part of the Enactus society will be doing a car wash to raise funds for their trip to Kenya this summer. £3 per car. FXU Swimming Club Swim sessions are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Helston Swimming Pool, for about an hour’s swim. They usually ask for £1 to cover minibus fuel. Pick up times and locations: Mondays and Fridays 7.15pm at Argos/Falmouth 7.25pm at The Sidings 7.30pm at Penryn Campus

Check out their Facebook page to keep updated with availability of swim sessions. Events TBC Charity Gala in support of Pride Month at Truro Pool on the last weekend of May (most likely date). More information will be given as soon as possible. Beach lifeguarding qualification course with the Gylly Life Saving Club in June. 6 people are needed to make it worthwhile to run, and the course itself can run a maximum of 12. It’ll cost £130 at the moment, as the Life Saving Club have subsidised it quite significantly for us (from £200!). CSM Shinty Sundays 2–4pm at Falmouth School. Sessions running: 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th May. Shinty is a fast pace stick and ball team sport, originating from Scotland but making a steady come back in England. If you have them please bring shin pads and football boots. Volunteering and Rad Sunny Camp Kernow Summer Term Volunteering Camp Kernow is an award-winning organisation with an innovative off-grid environmental adventure centre dedicated to reconnecting and engaging children with the natural environment and inspiring them to live more sustainably. Volunteering activities include harvesting, planting and building. Keep an eye on Camp Kernow’s website for new dates and on the FXU V Team page.

Penryn’s May Day Celebrations – (Sunday 1st May) To kick off Penryn’s 800 year celebration, Glasney Green Space Regeneration Project and Penryn Town council are looking for volunteers to help run some of the fun stalls at their annual May Day event (coconut shy, splat the rat, ball chucking games, duck race, poopla (a turd based version of hoopla where you get poop into scoring bogs!), tin-can alley and all that sort of ‘fun’) and maybe a bit of marshalling about. (Actually!) To the End – (Friday 10th June) Student, Jonny Dry will be making his second attempt at running the epic 125km (77miles) from the Prince of Wales Pier in Falmouth to the iconic Land’s End, raising funds for Transplant Links Community (TLC). You can follow Jonny’s training and the event itself on Facebook

Events FXU Awards – (Monday 23rd May) The FXU Awards recognise the activities and achievements of exceptional students and staff of the University of Exeter Cornwall Campuses and Falmouth University. Awards are presented in various categories, including sports clubs, societies, volunteering and fundraising. Shortlisted nominees are invited to the ceremony and winners will be presented with their awards throughout the course of the evening. Click here for more information.

Garden Party – (Saturday 28th May) FXU’s famous annual Garden Party is now in its ninth year! This is not an event to be missed and is the perfect send off for all students, old and new, into the Summer of 2016! Tickets will be sold in two batches at www.fxu.org.uk First batch of tickets will go on sale at 7pm on Tuesday 3rd May. Second batch will go on sale at 12 noon on Wednesday 4th May. Graduation Ball – (Saturday 4th June) Say goodbye to Falmouth in style! What better way to toast your success and watch the sun set on a fantastic chapter of your life? Enjoy a lavish night in Falmouth’s most exclusive location, Pendennis Castle, with drinks, pasties, live music and fireworks. Tickets will be sold in two batches at www.fxu.org.uk First batch of tickets will go on sale at 12 noon Tuesday 10 May (3rd Year Students and Post Grad Students only). Second batch of tickets, subject to availability, will go on sale at 12 noon on 17 May (all students). EU Referendum debate – (Friday 20th May) Lower Stannary, Penryn Campus 6pm – 8.30pm Q&A session with additional events ran by students, including voter registration sessions. FXU encourage everyone to register regardless of which way you are going to vote. Please click here to book your place if you would like to attend.

Postgraduate Days Out – (Friday 27th May & Tuesday 7th June) FXU will be taking the minibuses out for the day to allow Postgraduate Students to explore Cornwall. Locations to be decided — suggestions welcome! Contact alice.nicholls@fxu.org.uk for more information.

Norwegian Constitution Day – (Tuesday 17th May) The day of celebrations will begin at 12pm in The Compass with a welcome from Mathilde Baade, FXU International Executive Officer. Celebrations will include a traditional Norwegian dish served in The Stannary, a parade through the Italian Gardens, finishing with Champagne available to buy in the Upper Stannary. Paws Your Stress – (Thursday 12th May) Exchange Yellow, Penryn Campus (book your place) Chase your exam stress away by indulging in a truly relaxing and happiness filled hug from a furry friend. All students are welcome. Suggested £2 donation which will go to Guide Dogs for the Blind. For more information see their Facebook event page.

(May) Pride Month The month of May will be filled with a variety of events to celebrate Pride; from a Queer themed Quiz Night to an opportunity to try Quidditch! Click here for the full list of events.

Union General Meeting (UGM) All students are invited to attend. Your FXU Presidents will be hosting a celebratory free BBQ and showcasing the impact they have had over the past academic year. This event is planned to take place on Wednesday 25th May, 4–6pm, Chapel Lecture Theatre, Penryn Campus — please check the FXU website for details nearer the time as we will be keeping an eye on the weather!).

Accommodation Fair – (Saturday 7th May) 10am – 3pm at The Compass, Penryn Campus. Meet landlords, get to know other students who are looking and gain advice from the friendly Accommodation office. Check out their Facebook page for more information.

FXU Leadership Team Elections Now that the FXU Presidents have been elected for 2016/17 we are on the lookout for outstanding individuals to join us to make FXU projects a success for the next academic year! If you think you’ve got what it takes to be part of the most powerful group of students on campus, take a look at the job roles and nominate yourself here.

First Aid Training – (Tuesday 3rd May) 3 hour course deals with serious conditions and incidents. It is ideal if you want to know what to do when faced with an emergency involving a casualty of any age. Morning Slot Afternoon Slot



West Cornwall Motor Show – (Sunday 26th June) If you are looking for somewhere special to enjoy a day of varied attractions and entertainment then the West Cornwall Motor Show is the place for you. Visitors can expect to see classic and vintage cars, motorcycles, car dealerships, trade and craft stalls along with a wide variety of entertainment that will appeal to everyone. 10am – 4pm, Wendron Cricket Club, Helston. Helston Flora Day – (Saturday 7th May) The townsfolk have celebrated and enjoyed the wonderful tradition that is Flora Day for hundreds of years. Thousands of people, both local and visiting, celebrate this unique event each year. For more information about the day and dances click here.

Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival – (Friday 17th – Sunday 19th June) The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival is back this summer with more shanties, great venues and community spirit. Check out their website for more information.


Fal River Festival – (Monday 30th May – Sunday 5th June) This fantastic 7 day festival is a not-for-profit community festival which encompasses over 150 events varying from music and drama, the arts and heritage to gig racing, swimming, walking and lots more. With its diverse mix of events taking place at dozens of locations around the Fal River, the festival offers something for everyone and is the perfect opportunity to engage with life on the river and discover some of its fascinating history. Falmouth Week – (Friday 5th – Sunday 14th August) Falmouth Week is a major attraction for locals and visitors alike. With its origins in a local sailing regatta dating back at least far as 1837 the Week has evolved into not only a major sailing competition in the South West but also an opportunity for sailors and landlubbers to enjoy the many daytime and evening attractions in the town. Multifaith Chaplaincy Meeting for Worship – (Friday May 6th) Please come and join some local Quakers for a Meeting for Worship at 5.15pm in the chaplaincy (Penryn Campus). Experience the stillness and relative silence as we sit together. Afterwards please stay for curry and conversation or join us then at 6pm if you prefer. We look forward to meeting you. Conversations In Transition Are You Moving On? Undergraduate or postgraduate, the end of the academic year is a time of change for many of us. Are you leaving university this summer and pondering your future? Are you at the end of your first year and worried about your second, or approaching your final year and anxious about the workload? There’s more to all of us than the subject we study, or the career we choose, and moving on from one phase of our life to another is enough to make most of us pause. If you are nearing the end of a chapter, perhaps you would enjoy some company at the crossroads or some conversation with others pondering what the future holds. This time and space will be here for you on Thursday afternoons with Rev Elly Sheard who is friends with the chaplaincy team. Careersfest (Careers Bootcamp) – (16th – 20th May) To kick off the festival season, the Careerzone Penryn are having their very own Careersfest to help you get ready before you leave us for the summer. They will be running a week of career development activities all week which you can find listed here.
