Siemens are asking you to design a new product range that combines culinary with workspace, so the focus is the kitchen / dining / living / work combination, set within one of the 3 building options, taking one of the three given users, and aligning that with Siemens theme of Pure, Classic or Urban.
So, focus on the kitchen + living space and design a new product range that incorporates a work / library space with culinary.
for this project, i was tasked with redesigning an existing building to suit a chosen user. the brief requires us to design a space an open-plan living area, with its main focus being on 2 aspects, mainly a kitchen and an office space. with the current climate, many people are forced to transition to working from home to follow the social distancing guidelines. for this project i aim for efficiency within a space, with emphasis on seamless integrations and organic-feeling transitions in between each space. biophilic design will have a major influence in the space overall, as user wellbeing and mental health are things worth prioritizing

the kitchen in my studio apartment is compact and efficient. the measurements follow a basic standard set size, and the layout feels organic. the kitchen itself follows a single galley design, which streamlines all the action into one continuous line. on the left hand side, a hotel-style mini fridge is installed in the lower cabinet. next to it is a microwave-oven unit, installed under an induction stove top. the kitchen sink is placed on the far right, leaving sufficient space for a dish rack. the dining table doubles as an island, which is used for more demanding meals. the overlayed image shows the movements that are happening when cooking/spending time in the kitchen area.
a step by step process
1. repare 2 whole chicken breast fillets
2. rinse under running water
3. slice chicken in half, so that it’s thinner (easier to cook)
4. turn on stove and drizzle a pinch of cooking oil on frying pan
5. wait for the pan to heat up, then put in the chicken
6. season the chicken with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and herbs
7. turn chicken every 3 minutes
8. repeat this process 3-4x to ensure chicken is fully cooked
9. transfer chicken to a plate, then using a fork and knife cut it to smaller pieces
10. put in rice and soy sauce/teriyaki sauce, then mix well

Full name: Richard Hughes
Age: 42
Occupation: retired architect, now works from home as an associate lecturer
Hobbies: doing design work, listening to music, evening walks, and the occasional hike
Richard moved in to his house nearing his retirement, as he and his wife wanted to have more privacy, away from the bustling life of the city center. To save money he decided to buy an existing property then renovated it each time they have more money spare. He changed the layout of the main living area to accommodate for a new office space and an improved kitchen layout. Having love for design still, he decided to personalize his house by filling most of their interior with DIY furniture, built with recycled materials
Full name: Karen Hughes
Occupation: retired school teacher, now stays at home
Hobbies: cooking, reading light novels, gardening, and the occasional hike
When she and Richard decided to retire for their jobs, Karen shifts her focus to cooking. Karen and Richard came to the realization that the old layout of the house hindered her flow when cooking and made her feel claustrophobic every time she does so. The kitchen was the renovated to a much better layout. As they age, their diets started to change as well. She now cooks healthier foods with mostly fresh ingredients, more greens, and slightly less meat. They didn’t want to let age and retirement make them lazy, so she and Richard goes on a hike every now and then to maintain their athleticism. They are slowly turning their lifestyle to a healthier one
the proposed site is located in curbar derbyshire. it takes approximately 27 minutes to drive there from sheffield. the surrounding environment shows that curbar is a rural area with most of the housing having a large backyard area. it is still part of the peak district area, which gives the area a distinctive sloped appearance.
a compilation of visual elements that aided in the design process
• scandinavian design
• monochrome color scheme
• glass + concrete + wood + white brick
taken from various instagram pages
space evaluation and considerations + sun path + zoning
• how big is the overall space?
• is the path clear? any obstructions?
• is the layout efficient?
• ergonomics
• a strong sense of continuity
initial thought process/assessment of the space
the kitchen area feels claustraphobic because of the built in storage units, the dining table is placed in the corner of the kitchen, which fails to maximize the space. the kitchen is closed off, seperating it from the rest of the space.
the split level area is too open, without serving any real purpose aside from a pathway. even so, it isn’t big enough of a space to occupy any real activity.
the staircase infront of the main entrance does not utulize the entirity of the length of the elevated floor, opting for a small, narrow set of steps going down. a railing is used to seperate the 2 levels which makes the space feel even more claustraphobic.

creating a clear path + seperation in an open-plan
the new layout provides a clear sense of direction. the plan above showcases the 3 possible directions the user can take, leading to the kitchen, office, and living room in that order. the left hand side of the plan is intentionally left “empty” as it is used for movement in a linear way. the right hand side is meant to be a “functional area”, redesigned as a pathway, clear from obstruction
basic color overlay on original floor plan + assigning task to a spacereferring back to the brief + connundrums + solutions
• architect and partner living in a big house
• an avid believer in healthy living
• interested in recycling
• large house in brief, tiny in reality
• very claustraphobic
• unsettled areas/space
• outdated style
• seperation of spaces required without making the space feel small
• in need of a new color scheme
the use of light-colored interior creates the ilussion of a larger space. in terms of the space feeling claustraphobic, opening up the windows more could benefit the space, by allowing more natural light to enter. the ceiling is stripped open in favor of a slanted roof design to create more vertical real estate, giving users more space to “breathe” seperation of spaces can be achieved by having glazed windows as partitions, which allows user to see each other, and what is going on in the next space. the use of vertical elements as room dividers should be avoided as it can be seen as an obstruction, and ruin the line of sight. closing one end of the split level in exchange for an office corner maximizes space use, this solidifies the space’s identity, rooted in purpose. a scanidinavian style is preferred as its simplistic in nature. a combination of white walls and light timbers create a harmonious space. this compliments the users’ characteristics which appreciates beautiful design and the use of recycled, locally sourced materials as part of their house design
designing beautiful and functional appliances in the spirit of siematic
• dark colors convey a calming feeling
• seamless transition between kitchen and the rest of space
• clean minimalist design
• form follows function, but still elegant
• efficient storage units
• using natural materials like wood throughout the design
the kitchen and office are located right next to eachother. the chosen layout is of a U-shape to maximize space use, especially in the office area, where users need to reach for things. office storage units are made up of cabinets which gives a clean feeling. the use of dark colors adds interest to the space as it visually sticks out from the rest of the house, which is mainly made up of light colors.
