The Perfect Sphere

T

he world is gearing up for the football extravaganza of the World cup finals in Brazil. Given the advancement of technology, especially innovative tech that cross over to smartphones in the between years , it’s a wonder that’s new ball FIFA will use in the 2014 World Cup does not have inbuilt Wi-Fi, can send notifications to a smartphone detailing its mood, is hand-stitched from unicorn hide by Bolivian pygmies and releases an atomised spray of Calvin Klein Eternity each time you head it. Perhaps it’s a generational thing but as modern footballs are broadly the same shape and size as the ones that were used in the first world cup, then it’s hard to buy into marketing spiel that tries to convince you to spend ever-increasing sums of money on round things that still do little else apart from roll and bounce.

MEN

GROOMING

From late night outs to the brunch routes Ready for eggs benedict and margaritas! You better look ready too. Even though brunch is a casual late breakfast, you don’t want to look like what the cat dragged in. The trick is to strike the right chord between casual and formal. FWD gives you some tips.

• In summers wear light materials. If its cooler, try on a jacket. • Try a seersucker, polo or linen shirt Opt for white if you are not bold enough to try colours. • We don’t want to see any wrinkles, have your shirt ironed. • Roll up your sleeves if they are long. • Button up all the way only if you don’t want to look like you are going to rupture a blood vessel.

• Make sure your short trousers are ironed. • Ensure they have enough room to accomodate your brunch. • Try khakis but never ever attempt to wear cargos or denim shorts.

18

JUNE 2014

• Comfort, comfort, comfort • Keep them polished and shining • We don’t recommend sandals. • Keep your feet breathing, therefore no socks. • Make sure your shoes don’t have an odour before you step out.

• Get a nice breathable hat to protect you from the sun you can hardly go wrong with fedoras. • Wash and comb your hair even if you are wearing a hat. • Use gel or texturizing spray for your hair.

• Keep cool under dark shades • Please take them off when you sit down, we want to see your face. • Get light weight sunglasses. • You might have seen the measurements that come with your sunglasses. The first number is the width of the lens, the next the width of the bridge of the nose and the third is the length of one arm. So check your size before you buy.

• Keep it simple • Match the belt to your shoes, and the buckle to your watch • Make sure your belt is in good condition. • Break in your belt beforehand.

• Watches are so passé, wear a leather bracelet instead. • Coordinate the colour with other leather accessories. • If you feel one isn’t enough, try 2 , 3 ,…. • Want colour? Go for woven ones pair them with your watch if you must.

JUNE 2014

Mia

WITH LUCK & PRAYERS

BY HER SIDE If there is one thing Mia can’t do without, it’s her family; a complete homely girl Mia attributes her success to hard work and dedication. Text Maria John Photos Rejibhaskar

F

rom the land of lakes, letters and latex Mia George has indeed come a long way from her television soap days. Dazzling the audience with powerful performances, she is unlike other stars of her generation, tantrum free and taking stardom ever so lightly, Mia’s enthusiasm and maturity shines through her voice. Soft spoken and wise beyond her years Mia is focused on the present and marching forward. FWD had the chance to talk to her about the simple joys of life and movies of course.

How was the experience of playing Saraswati in Mr. Fraud? It was really exciting to be part of such a big enterprise. Even though the team would seem intimidating, everyone was very supportive and professional. Saraswati is a music teacher and is an important character in the movie. It was a really good experience.

Mohanlal complimented you on your

performance in Red Wine. How was it working with him again? I never thought that I would get another chance to act with him. He is a really downto-earth person. Up till the moment of the shot he would be talking and interacting with everybody. The moment the director says action he totally alters himself. It is mind blowing to watch that split second transformation.

Are you afraid of being typecast? It doesn’t affect me. If it seems that I am doing a lot of wife roles, I don’t think there is any problem in that. The audience understands that the character is not who I really am. If the role appeals to me I will do it.

You have a Tamil movie in the works. Do you have a mentor in that industry? Even though I got a lot of offers, I didn’t know anyone in the Tamil industry. It was during the time of Vishudhan that I got the offer for Amara Kaaviyam which is about two school students set in 1988. The

script was really interesting and therefore I accepted the role.

Kareena Kapoor said that she will not act in a non-Hindi film. Are you comfortable acting in a language that you don’t know? If one wants to, it is definitely possible. I believe you can learn any language at any point of time. Even though I understand Tamil to an extent I cannot speak. While shooting for Amara Kaaviyam, the director’s friend (who is a Malayalee) helped me with the dialogues. If I had any doubts, I never hesitated to ask. If you set your mind to it, there is nothing you can’t do.

You are currently balancing studying and acting. Where do you get the energy from? I am currently pursuing my Masters at Pala St. Thomas College. I try my best not to miss classes. If I am in Pala, there is no question of not going to college. There are times when I haven’t been able to utilize my study holidays and have had shoots during exams. I try to learn between shoots

but it is not always possible. My friends and teachers are the biggest help. They mark out important portions for me and help me with notes.

So in college are you Mia the movie star?

Quickies

I am Gimi the student in college. Initially there was the whole ruckus about an actress coming to the institution. People would come up to me for photos and autographs. Then it all slowly died down. I am just a regular person going to study and I mingle with everybody.

What exercise regime do you follow? I don’t follow any exercise or any diet. I have always been thin and it is only now that I have actually put on a little bit. Thankfully I have never had to work very hard at it.

Have you always wanted to be an actress? It was one of those things that just happened. I was always sure I didn’t want to be a doctor, engineer or nurse. I still took science in my plus two level though. I used to help out a lot of my friends and have been told that I teach well. Maybe if not an actress I would have been a teacher.

What do you like the most about the monsoon?

all the wonderful things outside but finally saying that there is no place like home.

Do you think star kids have it easy? I think everybody struggles equally. Maybe they have support from their famous relatives, but I don’t know of anybody who isn’t under the same pressure the rest of us are. Lal sir’s brother once remarked that he never gave him any extra boost. Lal sir believed that his brother had talent as a musician and would be able to come up by himself.

Are you open to bold scenes? As an actress I am open to accepting any role. But it also has to be comfortable with Gimi the individual.

I love being out in the rain. When we were children, we were always told not to get out as it could lead to fever. I remember two years ago during the monsoons, I just went out in the rain irrespective of what anybody said. It was so much fun.

Do link-ups bother you?

If you were to settle down somewhere in the world, where would it be?

Upcoming projects

I would be here in Kerala. Maybe it will be fun to be abroad for a while but eventually I would want to come back to my state. I hear a lot of my friends and family talking about

Definitely not! There is a reason why it is called gossip and not truth. If you pay attention to things like that you won’t have time for anything else. Rumors will always die down.

Favourite movie? There are so many. But if I had to name one it would be Roja. Favourite song? I love music. “Oru mezhukuthiriyude” is lately my favorite. If you could do anything in the world what would it be? I want to learn roller skating. Who would you like to act opposite to? I don’t think about that. I am happy to do what comes my way. Pets I am fond of cats. At one point I had nine. Now since I don’t have time, I don’t have any pets. One thing people will be surprised to know about you I am a lazy person. Things just happen to me. Who inspires you? Friends and family! It is from those nearest to you that you learn the best.

Currently I am shooting Hi I’m Tony with Lal sir, Siddhique sir and Biju sir under Jean Paul Lal’s direction. Another project I have is Nayana which is yet to be released. Amara Kaaviyam in Tamil will be out this year.

The Glass Menagerie

Tennessee Williams’ famous play came as a delight to the theatre lovers in the city. After all what is life without a little drama? Text Maria John Photos Jinson Abraham

a

tapestry delicately woven of emotions and relationships. The Glass Menagerie is scripted with a fragility that is inherent with every human sentiment. Kochi was witness to this theatrical masterpiece at the Crowne Plaza. The play was adapted for the Indian stage by Mumbai based RAGE productions and directed by Rajit Kapur. “Yes, I have tricks in my pocket, I have things up my sleeve. But I am the opposite of a stage magician. He gives you illusion that has the appearance of truth. I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion”

begins the protagonist Tom Wingfield. Set in the 1930s the play touches upon the lives of a dominating mother and her two children. Jim Sarbh as Tom, the quintessential angry young man, gave a steady performance. To the soft live music of a violin that symbolized the romanticizing of a memory, the protagonist took the audience through his struggles to be understood. Shernaz Patel as the mother was a force to be reckoned with. Her delivery captured the essence of Amanda Wingfield who has big dreams for her children in a difficult world. With a stage presence that had the audience hooked to her every single word; Shernaz Patel gave a memorable perfor-

mance. The timid and dedicated sister, Laura Wingfied was played admirably Ira Dubey. Her talent was so evident that one could not believe it was the same person who played the exuberant Pinky Bose in Aisha. Kabbeer H Maira played the character James, the gentleman caller. The Glass Menagerie’s main themes how the characters struggle to accept and associate with reality. Memory can often distort the truth. The beautiful rendering of the characters by the actors and the seamless direction contributed to the play’s success. The production was part of a charity event organized by the Round Table.

Panasonic HX – A500 4K wearable camcorder This might be music to your ears; Panasonic has unveiled the world’s first lightweight compact 4K 30/25p wearable camcorder, the HX-A500. The camera part of the new 4K-toting device can be worn on the head, while the main body which includes an LCD monitor sits in an armband worn by the user. The camcorder’s upgrade to 4K video recording (3820 x 2160) is undoubtedly the headline attraction of the HX-A500, and achieving this at frame rates of 30/25 fps puts it ahead of the current generation of GoPro which can only record 4K video at a more limiting 15 fps.

StratoBus – Midpoint between airship & satellite A consortium led by Thales Alenia Space is developing a StratoBus that may replace satellites in future. It’s a planned autonomous airship that can be launched like a regular blimp, but that will be able to hover at an altitude of 20 km (12 miles) in the stratosphere. According to the company, the StratoBus will be 70 to 100 meters long (230 to 328 ft), and 20 to 30 meters (66 to 98 ft) in width. Its envelope will be made mainly of UV-resistant woven carbon fiber and its two fuel cell-powered prop motors will allow it to maintain its position.

HereO GPS watch This device may look fancy but it can give parents a great amount of peace of mind as they share the parents’ duty of watching over children when they are out to play. The device pairs with a smartphone or tablet app that shows where a child is at any given moment. Apps will be made available for iOS and Android first, followed by Windows Phone and Blackberry in late 2014. One particularly useful piece of functionality is the ability for parents to draw a “virtual fence” around specific areas, such as gardens or a school, using the map in the app.

DigiGage Tel-Aviv based start-up DigiGage has created a new form of digital screen for elevators that can transport occupants to a new environment. Its most impressive feature is a proprietary algorithm that interacts with a sensor, so it reacts to the real-time movement of the elevator. This way the content of the display seems to scroll up and down with the elevator riders, creating the illusion of a window looking out into another dimension. DigiGage has already rolled out the system to several locations across the globe, taking the experience to elevator riders in its home country as well as the US, China, Greece and Italy.

Makeup mantras Renju Renjimar

5 STEPS TO BE A WEDDING CHARMER

Celebrity makeup artist Renju Renjimar is known for his natural ability to enliven an ordinary face with a stroke of brush. FWD is all ears as he shares some styling tips just for men…

M

en and makeup were two words that never went together until the 20th century. Apparently, now as men too use a lot of makeup, we thought of giving a quick guide to what works best for them and what does not. How do you get ready for a wedding? We’re not talking about fitting into a suit or accessorizing it with pocket flowers and cufflinks; but something more like the concealer, foundation, cleansers, toners….. Or even if you do, how many of you get confused as to what comes first– eye makeup or foundation ? Worry not. We have makeup artist Renju Renjimar guiding you, in very easy steps of how you can put your best foot forward while getting ready for someone’s wedding.

1

2

Go on for a cleansing and toning session using Body Shop’s cleanser and toner. Apply the cleanser, leave it for three minutes and then wipe it off using a damp cotton swab. Apply the toner which helps to restore the skin to its natural pH level and remove any remaining dirt or dry skin cells.

Start your grooming at least two hours prior to the event. First of all, go in for a perfect shave as makeup and beard is not a great amalgam.

Reader’s Concerns: I have this unruly, unmanageable hair and I always find it difficult to maintain it. Some say that using a hair gel or hair spray in the long run can affect the texture of my hair. What can I do about it? Use a hair gel (L’Oreal/Chamber) by adding few drops of water to it. Blend it using your palms and apply it thoroughly on your hair and style it the way you want. And always make sure to wash it off before hitting the bed. How to choose coloured lenses matching with ones skin shade?

Proceed to use a moisturizer (Bobbi Brown or L’Oreal) to make sure that your skin won’t dry up. Gently massage it on your face in upward motion till it blends with the skin. Leave it for 5 minutes and then move on with the foundation bit.

For the light skinned, any colour would suit them the best. The whitish can pick shades in brown and those on the darker side can opt for colours like dark brown, hazelnut. I have an oily skin and so soon after applying makeup, the oil washes all of it in patches. Is there any solution to get rid of the oil secretion? Before applying makeup, wiping your face with lemon juice and leaving it for 5 minutes and then washing off can be a help to some extend from melting down your makeup.

Must Do’s in a Month Head massage/Hair spa Facial/Clean up Pedicure and manicure

4 If you’ve blemishes or under eye circles, hide them using a concealer. I would suggest you go for a ‘Derma concealer’ that has numerous shades matching to each one’s skin colour. Use the one which is one shade lighter than your skin tint. Apply it with your forefinger under your lower lashes and between the inner corner of your eyes or elsewhere required. Use fingers to rub it in and pat it over every area till its visibly absorbed.

Hair trimming Never keep changing your face wash as it can make your skin look dull.

Concealer Buying Tip

While bagging a concealer, test it on your wrist and see which color covers your skin in the most natural way.

2014 JUNE

49

Hiding the Lines and Wrinkles

As areas around the lips, eye and mouth are the most elastic spots of our face, once you sweat there are chances for the foundation to run down in layers getting settled into creases and wrinkles. And instead of hiding the imperfections on your skin, this makes it more vivid. So to prevent the makeup from getting accumulated on the wrinkles, use a skin tightening makeup gel after washing your face with a face wash and before applying the concealer and the foundation.

5

Now apply the foundation. Use a branded foundation preferably from Bobbi Brown, Dolce & Gabbana, L’Oreal or Lakme Creamy mousse. Make four dots on your face using the foundation; on both sides of the cheek, on the chin and forehead and blend it thoroughly.

Those with an oily skin must stay away from using a cleanser, or using cleansers formulated for oily skin can be an option.

It is better for a guy not to wear a compact or to use a guyliner, as over makeup can add femininity to the face.

Choosing the Foundation

Now, with all the tips and tricks at hand we hope you are ready to rock, but most importantly remember to keep things simple and classy and above all be yourself to get that inner-glow.

50

JUNE 2014

Those with a dry skin must opt for a liquid foundation, normal skinned for a creamy foundation and the oily skinned must pick a sticky foundation. Follow it as this is the kind of makeup that suits your skin type.

Mayawati Does she pick a colour for the week and stick on to it throughout..? No doubt it’s a thumbs down for the BSP leader.

Sonia Gandhi She gets it politically correct from the pearls to the peep-toes.

Cricket Superstitions

‘Spell’ bounded… Superstitions for a super charged day, FWD looks at some amazing fallacies that our cricketers follow religiously.

A

part from skill, presence of mind and tons of prayers, our cricketers rely on some extra zing while on ground; no we are not talking of aerated soft drinks and health drinks but simple lucky charms and beliefs that are supposed to be winning factors of the game.

Yuvraj Singh He wears a jersey with number 12 on it, as his birthday falls on 12th of December, which also happens to be the 12th month of the year. Number 12 seems to be his lucky number. He also wears a black thread on his wrist.

Sachin Tendulkar It seems even the god of cricket was bowled over by superstition, Sachin Tendulkar, used to put on his left pad first while going out to bat.

54

JUNE 2014

MS Dhoni Dhoni was born on July 7 – 7th day and on the 7th month. He too sports the number seven on his jersey.

Mahela Jayawardena The elegant right-hander is known for kissing his bat while batting.

Virat Kohli For him it was his pair of gloves. In fact he once said, “I’m used to wearing the same pair of gloves with which I’d been scoring.” But now the fallacy revolves around wearing a black wristband.

Zaheer Khan A yellow handkerchief is his lucky charm. He carries it for most of the crucial matches.

Michael Clarke For him, music is the spice of life. He listens to loud music before going to bat.

Steve Waugh A red kerchief in his left pocket was his lucky charm. It has family sentiments attached to it. It seems that hanky was given to him by his grandfather.

Harbhajan Singh Whenever it was his turn to bowl in a match, we have seen him bending forward for a moment of prayer.

Sourav Ganguly He always carried the photo of his guru in every match he played, apart from the chain we used to see him wearing all the time.

Sunil Gavaskar Who wouldn’t want to be wished before going for a crucial game? Sunil Gavaskar‌. he never liked to be wished before walking out to bat.

Women and work-life balance

Strike a work-life balance

Finding a perfect harmony between work and personal life is no rocket science, but the reality is that very few can achieve and sustain it, read to know how… Text Thabitha Marion Photos various sources n the contemporary world, women are at par with the opposite sex in all respects, be it in profession, qualification or talent. However there is one face that still remains unchanged – the work-life balance. It’s never easy being a young mom, trying to juggle a full-time job with a family life. “I think most of the working women doubt their capability to handle the family in a well balanced way, because they only get limited time for this, compared with non working women and they start feeling themselves guilty for the same and most of them compare themselves with others,” says Manjusha Emmanuel, Psychologist, Tree of Life, Kochi. One in three working mothers say the

So find ways to express your joining the weekend feelings (friends, parents, siblings). They all can be of household chores help. seems to be unac-

But come what may, your personal or household chores don’t stop – you still have to organise children’s parties, chase up swimming lessons, sort out childcare or host dinners for husband’s boss. Juggling responsibilities with work pressure and domestic tasks, almost half of all working mothers feel the same all the time. When such helpless situations arise, they think of quitting their demanding jobs or giving a second thought for a part-time job. Are these some sort of a magic bullet? Experts are of the opinion that whether you work part time, full time or stay at home full time with your kids, there are Tips For ‘worked up’ Women Try relaxation techniques (Yoga, Dance, Gardening, and Painting). Find time to spend with friends. Spend quality time with children. Go for Outing, Try spa and take care of yourself. Ultimately ‘help yourself’. always compromises. Whatever hours you choose to work or if you choose not to work at all, it comes down to being compassionate with yourself and your choices.

The key is to chalk out a plan, get organized, and find the right balance between profession and parenthood. “Stress and tension which has been faced by married woman are either self made or due to lack of attention and encouragement they deserve from their partner,” says Manjusha Emmanuel. “And the only remedy to it is to express your feelings to your family let them help you to come out of that. Spare some time to ventilate. When you feel stressed and tensed stop what you are doing and relax,” she adds. When it comes to work life balance, there are no fixed rules. It all depends on an individual’s choice - prioritising, adjusting and deciding on what you are and are not prepared to forego. And while making up your mind, remember! Pay no heed to an onlooker’s advice instead follow your intuition unless you feel like opening up to someone for suggestions. Try not to be a perfectionist where it is not required. For instance, you’ve always done the laundry at home and you’re finicky about it being done in a systematic approach and when your husband offers help to wash clothes once in three days you disagree as he doesn’t do it your way. Here you’re being

a perfectionist for something which you can turn a blind eye. Look at it this way Better that it’s done every alternate day than to have a heap of laundry that takes all weekend i.e., choosing ‘good enough’ over perfect. At work or at home, if you are someone who tends to say ‘yes’ to extra responsibilities and thereby takes on too much and gets overloaded, here are a couple of techniques. If someone asks you to do something more than your share or an appeal is made to your submissive nature, say that you’ll get back to him/ her in some time and you use that time to think clearly about whether to say yes or no. If you’re feeling conflicted with your work/life balance, remember that it does take a while to work out what’s right for you as an individual.

How We Did It.....

Hillary Clinton - "Our lives are a mixture of different roles. Most of us are doing the best we can to find whatever the right balance is... For me, that balance is family, work, and service.”

Cindy Crawford - "I like to work. The

2014 JUNE

59

self-esteem and satisfaction that I get from working makes me a better person, which makes me a better mom. I feel lucky because I have the luxury of working only one or two days a week."

Michelle Obama - "Women in particular need to keep an eye on their physical and mental health, because if we're scurrying to and from appointments and errands, we don't have a lot of time to take care of ourselves. We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own 'to do' list."

There are days when everyone is fussy, fighting and late. Gracie has long hair, and sometimes it's such a fight to brush it in the morning and get her ready for school. But I think about the days when she'll be too big and tall. She won't ever let me brush her hair then, so I enjoy the little moments now even though they're not perfect."

60

JUNE 2014

Me and my husband work in an MNC, as we have no one at home to look after our litle daughter, reluctantly we send her to a day care school. Though she is having a jolly good time, I feel insecure and tend to think whether I’m being a good mother? Nowadays the society’s expectation from a child is like chalk and cheese. The more independent the child is, the more capable he/she will be when they grow up. The early on lessons your child learns from a day-care is sharing, cooperation and how to socialize. So don’t feel guilty, your child is blessed enough to learn those at this small age.

Malaika Arora Khan – “I have not faced any problem with the work I’m doing. The dates are nicely spaced out, if I’m out the whole day, then the previous day is spent with my child... I try and balance it out in a way that I give him quality time as well. I strongly feel that it’s very important to spend quality time with kids, especially in their formative years.”

Oprah Winfrey - "If you neglect to recharge a battery, it dies. And if you run full-speed ahead without stopping for water, you lose momentum to finish the race."

Faith Hill - "There's no secret when it comes to juggling career and motherhood...

Readers Concerns

(Courtesy: Manjusha Emmanuel, Psychologist, Tree of Life, Kochi.)

I have two sons and the younger one who is just three years old is a bit too naughty. I have my mother-in-law at home and lately she said that she finds it difficult to manage him. When I’m at office, I picture the mess at home and get worried. Do you think temporarily quitting my job is the only solution? Quitting your job will be like adding fuel to the fire. Better you send him to a nursery for half a day or assign some activities to him. I think he is a boy with lot of energy which has been used in an unwanted way. So try using his energy in a positive manner and make him learn new things according to his age. We’re a married couple and both of us are IT professionals. After the day’s work when we get back home, both of us are washed out and irritated. A silly argument turns into a big fight and we cut off our communication for the next couple of days.

Pooja Bedi – “To maintain a work life balance you need to work on yourself and prioritize things. It’s important that you learn the art of time management. What works for one person isn’t going to work for the other. So work it out to find how you can maximize all your roles as a mother, daughter, wife etc. Do not forget your individuality in the process.”

I find a common problem in IT professionals. They are very good at communicating via machines, but when it comes to face to face conversation; it’s a poor show. As you both are a newly married couple, try not to drag your fight more seriously as you don’t have enough life experience. Try to find quality time for each other, take time to understand each other. Key to it is a healthy communication.

The sunshine city Designed in the form of a maze by the natives centuries ago, getting lost in the town of Mykonos is an enjoyable experience. It lets one explore the city and fall in love with the place.

i

t is believed that this Greek island is as old as Greek mythology and the large rocks that form the mystical island of Mykonos are giants killed by Hercules. Taking its name after its first ruler, Mykons, the beautiful island lies in the South Aegian Sea and is part of the Greek Cyclades. Enjoying sunshine up to 300 days a year, the sea, the wind and the weather-beaten little whitewashed churches combine to give the town a vibrant allure. With pristine beaches and hordes of premium eateries, Mykonos caters to the party goers and the peace seekers alike, where elegance meets simplicity.

Aham: A fine sartorial elegance

FWD in conversation with Dinu Elizabeth Roy, a talented designer in her own right, who is known for combining the innate beauty of craft with contemporary designs, adding the sheen of glamour to any fabric. Text Maria John Photos various sources

S

howcasing the myriad talents of the Indian craftsmen is Aham designer boutique in Sasthamangalam, Thiruvnanthapuram. Every piece of fabric and jewellery in the boutique is handpicked from various parts of India by the extremely talented Dinu Elizabeth Roy. What sets Aham apart is their custom made designs. Aham in Sanskrit means ‘I’ and the boutique designs and creates unique ensembles that are tailored to an individual’s preference. Aham designer boutique has an ardent fan following on facebook. “The initial sale through Facebook gave me the confidence to start a boutique” says Dinu. She has customers from all over India and abroad. A major part of the customers approach the boutique after seeing the designs online or by word of mouth. Products can be ordered from the catalogue on facebook and it will be couriered to you anywhere in India. Home delivery is available in Thiruvananthapuram. A variety of materials from Jute Silk, Tussar, Kota, Chanderi to cotton are available in the store. These materials can be mixed and

matched to create exquisite pieces. Hand embroidery, cutwork and printing can also be done on request. Embroidery includes phulkari, kantha, arya and zari works. If a material is not available in a particular color or type, Dinu can have it ordered. Aham gives you designer wear within a budget you desire. Dinu stresses on the fact that individual preference is of utmost priority in the boutique. Dinu personally coordinates the designing in person or by phone. On the first meeting with her, ideas and preferences are discussed. On the

photographed by Jinson Abraham second meeting, samples of materials are shown and decided upon. Each design is done in mind to highlight the client’s best features. A popular trend now is to buy the dupatta first and to design the outfit around it. Dinu procures beautiful dupattas from Kolkota and other material from Jaipur, Bhagalpur, and Andhra Pradesh etc. The boutique also showcases home linen and jewellery. Terracotta and metal jewellery done by tribes from Orissa are very popular with the home crowd. The jewellery too can be customized to match with the outfit. There is also a wide selection of screwpine bags, mobile pouches, bottle holders and baskets. These too can be personalized and dyed any colour. Inspired by Dinu’s two year old daughter, the boutique has now come out with a collection of comfortable formal attire for children known as ‘Little Princess’. Dinu and her sister have always been interested in coordinating their wardrobe. She remembers how they once created an outfit out of a dupatta. Friends and family became regular customers and the seed for Aham was thus sowed. Dinu dons many hats as a mother, wife, entrepreneur and air-hostess. Though

work takes her away for the better part of a month, Dinu still finds time to coordinate her home and boutique while personally dealing with the clients. Client interaction is something that she thoroughly enjoys. It was with the gentle prodding of her in-laws and husband that Dinu made her passion a reality. There were initial difficulties with financing and sourcing which have been overcome. It is quite a tedious task to find sources and craftsmen who will give you quality product. Dinu’s love for travelling has taken her to different parts of India and exposed her to various crafts. Through trial and error, Dinu has now coordinated a dependable team of tailors, craftsmen and sources. She says that to start a boutique the three important things are to define your target group, have the confidence and patience to make it work and to start small. A lot of boutiques start with a major investment and find it difficult to make the return. It is always better to start with a comfortable investment and expand as you go along. Support from her family and friends are what keep Dinu going. And with that kind of encouragement Dinu is enthusiastic about planning more stores in Kerala

Kerala Cricket Association

Batting for talent

Mr. T C Mathew, the President of Kerala Cricket Association is credited for taking Kerala cricket to a new level. In a quick round of chat with FWD, he talks about an ambitious action plan that will mould young talents and bring them in the national level. Text: Maria John Photos: Various sources

i

magine if Sachin Tendulkar was from Kerala. Would we have more kids shouting ‘sixer’ instead of ‘goal’ in our parks and grounds? Malayalees have been associated with football more than cricket. But that might not be true anymore. The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has a plan in motion to bring out the next ‘master blaster’ from the

72

JUNE 2014

state. Formed in 1951, the KCA has been working hard to put a system into place that would attract more talent in Kerala. They have been gaining a lot of recognition as of late especially with the appointment of KCA president Mr. T C Mathew as the team manager for the India tour of New Zealand 2014. FWD sat down with Mr. T C Mathew and Mr. Jayesh George (Joint sec-

retary) at their office in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Cochin to talk about our national game. Of his New Zealand experiences Mr. Mathew is candid. Being the team manager (which is on a rotational basis) is a great recognition for BCCI members. The Indian team is a well oiled machine and so his role as manager was smooth sailing. The time in New Zealand was exceptional he says as he got to be around great players like Dhoni

photographed by Asmeena A and Kohli. “We need such iconic cricketers from our state to inspire upcoming players here” says Mr. Mathew. He predicts that the Kerala team will have more national players in the next couple of years and a Ranji Trophy win in the near future. For this the KCA has drafted a mission for 2020 which will see cricket reach new heights in the state. Cricket in Kerala faces many challenges. Students generally look for secure jobs and not many companies offers job for players other than State Bank of Travancore. Most schools don’t have cricket programs or grounds and their coaches are generally from non-cricketing backgrounds. Therefore opportunities for

2014 JUNE

73

cricket students are negligible. Climatic conditions are not favourable either. Practice sessions are not possible due to rains which happen just before the start of the cricket season. “We have to send our players to other states for practice” says Mr. George. Mission 2020 starts with the basics: infrastructure. With the assistance of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) the KCA has built stadiums in Krishnagiri and Perunthalmanna with new stadiums in each of the 14 districts already in planning stage. The KCA which started with three employees has over 200 employees now with well equipped offices in every district. CASH (Cricket Academies and Sports Hostel) Kerala project which started

74

JUNE 2014

in 2009 has been a successful venture where students are provided with all possible facilities including hostels, equipment, uniforms, training facilities etc. In 2013 the KCA adopted 432 girls and boys into the academy with full scholarship. Nowhere in India has a cricket association taken up such a big challenge. The KCA also has the maximum number of A-level coaches which is on par with that of West Bengal. They are also currently training physiotherapists, trainers and curators. The result of these efforts is evident by the qualification of the Kerala team for the ODI and T20 in 2013 and the T20 in 2014 at the national level. Former Indian cricketer Chandrakant Pandit has taken over as cricket director and the team is flourishing under him. “We need to inculcate an attitude for sports in Kerala” remarks Mr. Mathew. He recommends that students start as early as age 9-10 for

training in basic fitness. By the next two years they should find their skill level in cricket. The first category for tournaments is under 14 and then they would move to under 16, under 22 and under 25 categories. Mr. George is enthusiastic about the tournaments they are planning at school and state levels. More than 1000 students are expected to participate and it will really boost the spirit of the game. All the expenses for the tournament will be borne by the KCA along with cash prizes for the winners. Now that the wheels have been set in motion, the KCA is geared up to face an exciting season of cricket. Maybe we will see many more of our girls and boys wear the Indian cricket jersey soon. Howzat?

Kerala blogged It cannot get more diverse and exciting than this, 27 bloggers from 15 nations, travelling the length and breadth of the state, sharing a strong passion for blogging. The ‘Kerala Blog Express’ organized by the KTDC was one of its kind initiative to promote ‘Gods on Country’ before world audience. FWD tracks their path.

arun Gaur (from India) is ecstatic about Kerala. “I am taking a lot of memories back home”. As part of the Kerala Blog Express (KBE), Tarun and 26 other bloggers had been touring the state for two weeks. They covered it all; from the temples to the palaces, tea estates to serene beaches,

backwaters to the forts and ethnic art forms to native cuisines. The bloggers talked to FWD about their love for the state, photobombing and other nuances of traveling with fellow bloggers. The sense of camaraderie was evident as we sat around talking about their experiences. They were all world renowned bloggers among which were international

award winners. For most of them it was the first time that they were traveling in such a group as normally they travel either solo or with family. “It was challenging” says Nelson Carvalheiro (Germany). Even though the scope of each blog was different, the bloggers found themselves being taken to the same places which proved the task they had a little daunting. There

would be a hundred thousand pictures of the same thing, Nelson continued to say. But soon they settled into their own niches, helping each other out and imparting tips. Dalia Harrington (USA) tells me that they had really bonded over the trip and did things people in groups tend to do like photobombing and taking pictures of people sleeping. Some were even planning future trips together. The go to man for anything for the group was Manoj Vasudevan from the KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation) team. Rutavi Mehta, Kenny Jacob and Manoj Vasudevan were the hosts

from the department side and the team was all in praise of their efforts. To have the right guide is as important as anything else, they tell us. A few of them had been to Kerala before. But never like this. Vijay Nambiar (India) states that his perspective of Kerala has changed with this new experience. For some it was the first time they had heard of the state. Most travelers are always struck by the fact that you could experience everything from the beach to the mountains here. Also they could not believe how different the North of India is from the South. . “Kerala should be the first place in India that a tourist should visit. You can ease into the culture here, relax and then get ready to face the euphoric North India says Oscar Neto (Brazil). He has also become a fan of Kalaripayttu, the martial art of the state. Vijay Nambiar remarks that Kerala has always been projected as a family destination and therefore the KBE could be instrumental in bringing the rest of the tourist crowd to the state. The bloggers did wish they had more time in each place, though the packed schedule

Yet another aspect that got the appreciation of the bloggers were the regional cuisine. Merushcka Govender (South Africa) replies that she must have had at least five different fish curries. The cuisine was so diverse that every time she comes, there would be new things to try. “I am even dreaming of When asked, how they managed to coconuts” jokes Anita Bora (India).Did the find time for blogging in between? out the trip as few places had fast internet connection. However, Social networking sites like Facebook and Instagram made their jobs easier, but the actual blog requires work and would be written once they got back to home. Social networking is the phenomenon of the century and KTDC had rightfully tapped into its potential to promote god’s own country. Hailing from 15 different countries the team was unanimous in their praise for the organizers, who had brought people together to enjoy one of the 10 best travel destinations in the world according to the National Geographic. They are hoping that the KBE becomes a regular feature as ‘Kerala is one of those places you keep coming back to”.

Relationship after sex selfie

Would you dare for an A‘ fter Sex Selfie’? Sex might not be a taboo in 2014, but it is still an intimate form of action that doesn’t need to be shared with other people who are not involved.

t

here’s a new ‘Selfie’ trend every week and with each new trend things are getting more culturally devastating. The most private moment between couples are out there for the world to see in the World Wide Web, making the rounds on social media net-

80

JUNE 2014

works like Instagram and Twitter. The word ‘Selfie’ has been going in around for some time, but the latest buzz word is “After Sex Selfie”. Filming or photographing a picture of post-coital bliss on social media is the latest fad. The ‘After Sex Selfies’ page that was launched only a couple of months ago has already amassed a quarter of a million

followers, but at the cost of privacy and decency. It has now become a widespread practice, a growing number of men and women are happily posting ‘sex selfies’ soon after engaging in the real act, with full knowledge that they can and will be searched by anonymous eyes. A survey done by AshleyMadison.com,

the world’s largest extra-marital dating site says that when it comes to posting ‘after- sex- selfie’ 71 per cent of British male respondents and 69 percent of women have taken a ‘sex selfie’ - compared with 60.19 percent and 51.6 per cent globally, respectively. These images

show everything from people lying in bed together to one night stands with a stranger. Clearly, it is a way of pushing digital boundaries, the shallowest gesture of modern life serving no other purpose than self-gratification. According to CNET, there have been almost 3,000

such pictures so far on the site, with people fully clothed and snuggled up to their partner. Now, trends like these that catch up quickly would also perish as fast as they began. But on the other side let us be warned about another selfie replacing the current one.

Interview Dominic Joseph

Food focused “To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art.” Going out of the box, Chef Dominic Joseph gets smart when it comes to stirring our minds with his creative dishes. Text Atheena Wilson Photos Vinayak

What’s the signature dish? I don’t have a signature dish. I don’t believe in it, I can’t imagine having a dish for 25 years. You see what’s in the market and I learn to focus on whimsical food. Whimsical is quite an interesting word, anything fishy lately? Putting a twist on the regular fish curry with a touch of sweetness, I have prepared a fish wrapping in bacon Pancetta. The meal was served with red curry and balls of tapioca. On the sweet side, I’ve prepared Bacon ice cream and Pop corn ice cream. Today I have prepared a burger that’s made out of Chinese buns and the pork belly. What made you walk on the line of whimsical? When I went to study at the Culinary Institute of America, New York, the Chefs were mostly European, which was basically the mother food, yet I wanted to move away. While working at Vermillion ( a Latin and Indian restaurant) at Manhattan, I met Graham Elliot. Specialized in Molecular gastronomy, we interacted at a Sandwhich bar and that changed my life. Any stereotypes to strike off in the art of cooking? I hate fine dining; the basic is that a meal should have an outburst of flavours and an immense palate. This could even be a simple sandwich. The most successful element of your cooking… Fresh ingredients! Here at Casino, you

90

JUNE 2014

will never have a menu for the seafood. The seafood is fresh from the ocean and not even refrigerated, that’s why you cannot predict what’s on the menu! I do not necessarily believe in importing meat from New Zealand, since the freshness is lost. It also increases the carbon footprint. There are so many things over here that goes undiscovered, usually over here the butcher throws away the pork belly, but it’s got a great taste. You like the motto “capture locally”, what are you favourite Indian Ingredients? Cilantro and tamarind! Fusion cooking is in, what will be next best fusion cooking trend? Fusion is Confusion quoted by the great Chef Thomas Kelller. Latin American and

Indian food is a great combination. From similar geography and palates, both countries have a bridge that connects them. Usually there’s misconception that fusion cooking involves just mixing sauces, I think Latin American and Indian connection is based on peppers. It’s a global village, how about Global Tastes? With the help of television, they’re getting familiar with the terms. Globalization has lead to the trend of junk food. Mc Donalds promote junk food. We recently took at as corporate social responsibility during the culinary session of SuperChef, how to prepare meals on a healthier level. The idea was to teach children good food habits and healthy practices in cooking. In Kochi, people are dinning out more and mostly stick

to meals of their comfort zone and now attempt trying other types of cuisines. You’ve emphasized a lot on the heath factor, how does it stand out in your cooking? Going to the basics of using healthy ingredients such as natural salt free off cyanide, whole spices unlike the packaged ones and freshly grown herbs in the garden. And minimising the usage of preservatives, how to retain freshness… What makes the dining experience ultimate at Casino? The service, a strong connection with the guest and the staff. There’s a teaching about the personality and how to make the dining experience comfortable. There’s an intangible connect having to serve our food. A few meals that we cannot skip by at Casino’s? Seafood- fresh off the shore Tharavadu has great Mutoon biryani prepared by Chef Asif Ali and Pork Belly Bao.

argotecture has been making waves in the building industry by providing quick and cheap shelters. Combining cargo with architecture, this alternative building style has breathed life into the countless number of shipping containers lying unused at the ports. Be it a house, a school or a shop, designers have reinvented the shipping container into something more than just a box.

Public Housing Completed in five months in 2001, the Container City is comprised of studios and living spaces. The City is environment friendly with over 80% of the construction made from recycled material.Located at Trinity Buoy Wharf, London, it was expanded in 2005 to accommodate offices.

Schools A shipping container was converted into this beautiful school outside of Cape Town for 25 students. Designed by Tsai Design Studio in South Africa, the 120 square meters of space is converted into a library for the entire Vissershok primary school in the afternoon.

Interview

Chris Wolf

FWD is starting a special section for pets. Readers can send in their concerns to petscare@fwdmedia.in. Chris Wolf from Wolf n Pack, Dog training and k9 security services will answer your queries.

A RARE AND DARING ACT FWD meets Chris Wolf, a qualified canine trainer who has made the impossible possible; he has successfully tamed a wild beast with only endurance and perseverance as weapons.

Text FWD Media Photos Wolf n Pack

C

hris is no ordinary dog trainer, he is a behavior specialist for canines, who has undergone intensive and advanced methods of dog training from Germany. He has the unique experience of taming a cheetah in Bahrain. Talking to FWD Chris revealed

96

JUNE 2014

his plans to open a Big Cat Boarding and Training centre in Dubai by 2015.

Chris as a canine trainer and your accomplishments‌.. As a trainer I’m known for fixing dangerous behavioural disorders in canines, tactically training dogs of any age, breed and

personality for personal protection. We are the first dog training institute to start k9 security services in the state and bring in the concept of bouncer dogs in the country through the famous celebrity cricket league, Wolf n Pack also introduced private training school for canines and drug detection dogs for the Kerala police.

But the greatest accomplishment came when I got to tame a ferocious big cat in the Middle East.

The experience of getting trained in Germany and the experts in this field whom you got to interact with…….. I got the opportunity to get trained and work in Germany under trainers who use the traditional and advanced methods of dog training and so I consider myself lucky to be exposed to most of the techniques early on in my career. Since Germany is origin of most of the dog breeds and techniques in canine training, I had the chance to work with the finest trainers on the planet. During my stay there, I was also actively involved in training German police dogs in Hamburgh for the sport of shutzhund (protection dogs). And also as my teacher there trained the US marine cops, I was lucky enough to get updated with the advanced training techniques.

A comparative analysis on the methods of dog training being followed abroad and in India... Unlike the outdated British methods of dog training practiced in India till around 2012, lot of changes has occurred in training methods and even in the pet industry. They happened because the dog owners were getting educated about training methods. Moreover in most of the countries, owners themselves were training their dogs

and if they need any professional help in between, they approach an expert. The difference felt in India is the lack of evaluation of the drive temperament and energy of dogs before training, when compared to training protocol followed abroad. One of my co-trainers from Germany, during his visit to India was coaxed by me to enlighten a couple of dog owners here. He returned with some interesting observations. “I trained some dogs and took back the art of yoga from this great country”. So the country has to offer its part in each subject, I am working hard towards that goal.

To train a big cat in the Middle East, what made the royal family search for a trainer in India and that too

from Kerala? India has a big place among the people of the Middle East, especially those who tame leopards and use them as pets as Indians have been doing so from the time of Akbar and Humayun. They used to tame leopards or wild animals and keep them as pets or use them for hunting. Over here what had happened was the Royal family had employed 8 trainers from different parts of the world and finally thought of looking for someone in India. There were no leopard trainers. But they found someone who trains aggressive canines, and contacted me. I took their offer and flew immediately.

After finding the right dog owner, go through the following features of the trained dog: Is the dog scared when hearing an obedience command? Is the dog scared or nervous while a leash is being applied? Does the dog shy out, urinate or growl when the trainer approaches? Is the dog hyperactive and disobedient? Is the owner well educated in terms of dog training?

How was it to live with a wild reactive 4 year old cheetah for 29 days? For her, does the bond she shared with you remain for a life time, just as in dogs? My days with the wild animal unveiled my true weaknesses and my inner strength; I will try to depict my emotions during the period like this... I was relishing the novelty and excitement of a child, weakness of a hostage, pleasure of a smuggler, pride of a gangster and the thrill of a teenager, with no more fear left to experience. Animals always put two things together and try to understand the situation. Towards the end of training, she started associating feelings of trust, comfort, play, happiness, hunger, respect and taste with my scent, voice and looks and submits to it. This association made our bonding strong, similar to what we experience with dogs. This association will be permanent as it is in a part of her brain from where she can recollect it.

Was the cheetah encounter an encouraging factor for you to start a Big Cat Boarding and Training Centre in Dubai supposedly by 2015? Yes it’s true that the cheetah encounter

What Wolf N Pack expects from a trained dog and its owner: A dog that shows interest to obey the owner A dog that is active as well as submissive A dog which is confident A dog who respects the owner’s personal space A dog who can obey the owner amidst distractions An owner who corrects and appreciates the dog with consistent timing An owner who is calm and confident An owner who knows the animal as it is, and who refrains from humanizing the dog An owner who knows to groom, administer medicines and feed the dog. I would direct you to choose a trainer who is capable of training the dog and guide the owner to reach the above standards.

was a big milestone in my career. This international recognition helped me gain confidence of the big cat owners in the Middle East, especially in Dubai ...and since it’s a new trend in Dubai to keep leopards and panthers as a prestige symbol and taking them for a ride in their Ferrari is a cool thing to do, it surely did boost my progress.

There are a lot of trainers who are not aptly skilled. How can one determine whether a dog is send to the right trainer? Dog owners need to have knowledge about the popular dog trainers and training schools in the country. They need to Check out the trainers who are accessible as to whether they carry a reputed background. Once you are sure that the person is a certified trainer, contact at least five dog owners with whose dogs he has worked on. Keep in mind that the dog owner with whom you are verifying should have been actively involved in the process of training, for want of a studied opinion. If not ask for another contact. When the dog owner is not showing necessary interest/ involvement in the process, we can never blame a trainer for a disobedient dog.

Fifa Facts

Fascinating facts of

FIFA

FWD brings a few things you may have missed out about FIFA 2014

T

he 20th edition of the FIFA World Cup has begun with host nation Brazil taking on Croatia in the competition's opening game at the Arena de Sao Paulo

in Sao Paulo. Here are some interesting nuggets of information about the month long extravaganza.

• The World Cup being held every four years usually allows a few nations to experience the event for the first time. This time around, Brazil 2014 will witness just a single new nation at the finals, with Bosnia-Herzegovina ready to feature at

100

JUNE 2014

their first major tournament. • From north to south, the 2014 World Cup will see matches take place in 12 different cities, more than any other finals on record there will be games in Manaus, Fortaleza, Natal, Recife, Salvador, Cuiaba, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre.

• FIFA have released a breakdown of which nations have bought the most tickets so far, naturally, Brazil have the lion's share, with around 62% of all tickets so far going to Brazilian residents and the United States snapped up more than 65,000 tickets followed by England.

• There are no less than eight previous winners of the FIFA World Cup set to take part in Brazil 2014.One of those, of course, is the host nation; Brazil have won the World Cup a record five times, the last of which came in 2002. Italy (four wins), Germany (three), Uruguay, Argentina (twice each), England, France and Spain (once each) are the others.

• The 2014 FIFA World Cup mascot is named "Fuleco," as voted for by the Brazilian public. He is an armadillo who can curl up into a football. • The final of the 2014 World Cup will

be played on Sunday, 13 July, at the Maracana Stadium, now revamped and rebuilt.

BIZZARE MOMENTS IN THE HISTORY OF

FIFA WORLD CUP • The Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen before the 1966 FIFA World Cup which was held in England. The Trophy was missing for about one week and was finally found by a dog named ‘Pickles’.

• Mexico has two rather unenviable records to their name; they have been knocked out of the World Cup finals more times than any other nation (except one) without winning a single game. This has happened on six occasions: 1930, '50, '54, '58, '66 and '78. • Mexico also has another record outright that of suffering more World Cup finals defeats than any other nation. • Probably, one of the funniest facts associated with the World Cup involves the penalty shootout of the great Italian footballer Giuseppe Meazza. In the year 1938, he got a chance of a penalty kick against Brazil. While he was about to do so, his shorts fell down. Despite this malfunction, he picked up his shorts, and made the goal beating the goalkeeper who was still laughing. This pushed Italy to the finals.

• One record that stands to be broken is that of the all-time record goalscorer at the World Cup finals. The current holder is former Brazilian striker Ronaldo, who plundered a total of 15 goals during his days with the national team. • In the year 1950, India qualified for the World Cup in Brazil. However, they could not make it to the big event as they were accustomed to play barefoot, and FIFA required all players to wear shoes during matches.

• Vuvuzelas were a huge feature from the 2010, World Cup in South Aftrica however, this time they will be replaced by Caxirola.

Lip smacking lunch recipes for children FWD brings four easy to make lunch box recipes for children that are yum, fun and nutritious.

p

acking lunch boxes for kids are no kids play and if the child is a picky eater it can give mother a tough time. Even the world’s best chef cannot persuade them to get down a meal. Moreover, while packing lunch for children there are a lot of factors that needs to be taken care of like its flavor, appearance and nutritional benefits.

sides up on a baking sheet and lightly toast the shredded chicken. Spread 2 tablespoons of marinara or tomato on cut side of each bagel half. Top each half with 1/4 cup chicken and sprinkle on it 1/4 cup cheese. Broil bagel halves an additional 2 minutes or until cheese melts.

cheese Preparation Heat the oven over medium-high heat. Add oil, followed by beef and spices and cook it for three minutes. Add broth, water and tomatoes. Bring it to boil. Stir in macaroni, cover and cook it for ten minutes or until macaroni is done. Heat milk and cream cheese in a saucepan over medium heat. Tuna Salad Sandwich Ingredients Canned tuna 2 tbsp Mayonnaise Lettuce (as required) Cheese of your choice Brown bread A pinch of crushed pepper 1tsp green onions

Tips and Tricks for Veggie Haters Parents to set an example

Barbecue Chicken Sloppy Joes Ingredients ½ cup chopped tomatoes 2 cup shredded smoked chicken ½ cup grated carrot 1 tsp barbecue sauce Parsley Hamburger bun Preparation Toss chopped tomatoes and shredded smoked chicken and carrots with barbecue sauce and heat through. Toss the mixture with chopped parsley and pack it for your kid with a hamburger bun.

Let your child watch you having more veggies in different forms and flavours. Explaining that red spinach ‘helps you grow’ or ‘it’s good for glowing red cheeks’ is more effective than saying that, ‘it’s healthy’.

Make food fun Relating healthy food to fun things or a game which your child likes can be a smart way to feed your child with a few bites of greens.

Implement the ‘one-bite rule’ Never lose hope when your child refuses to have a veggie, as its quite natural for kids to reject some kind of food eight to nine times. So here what you can do is to ask your child to try at least one mouthful of his/her rejected food whenever it is served at home.

No fights over food One of the prevalent misconceptions with regard to feeding children is forcing them to have a food which they dislike, until they throw up. Choking them with food can be a negative food experience for them.

Reward their intake It’s an inspiration for the child when his/her parent rewards them for their compromised intake of food. Once in a while make them happy with their favourite candy, but never to make it as a habit.

Arrange food in patterns Children love food when it’s designed into patterns on their plate. Crafting veggies in the shapes of a heart or a smiley face can make them like veggies even more.

Add favourite flavours Adding additional flavours to vegetables can be a good idea, provided they’re not unhealthy. Figure out their favourite flavor or food and try bringing in the same taste to the food he/she dislikes.

Study Abroad Aspirants

l

ike me, millions of students with sour grapes who aspire to do some studying abroad and are making preparations for the same are asking themselves this week how they failed to get into the colleges of their dreams. It is simple: For years, you

were lied to. All your life you had been told this Just be yourself. That is great advice, as long as ‘yourself’ has nine extracurricular awards, six leadership positions, skill in at least three sports, killer SAT scores and a hot mom. Then by all means, be yourself! But if you have no awards to boast of,

neither skills to pretend that you own a few, then consider taking your business elsewhere. Maybe studying abroad is not meant for you. What could I have done differently over the past years? For starters, had I known two years ago what I know now, I would have gladly

I also probably should have started a fake charity, provided veterinary services for homeless people’s pets, collected donations for the underprivileged chimpanzees of the Congo, raised awareness that Delhi nights are not the safest for women and for anyone from North East India, Fun-runs, dance-a-thons, bake sales, etc. As long as you are using someone else’s misfortunes to try to propel yourself into the Ivy League equivalent in whatever college you had applied to, you are golden. Having a tiger mom helps, too. I noticed long ago that my parents gave up on parenting me. It has been great in certain ways: Instead of “Be home by 11”, its “Don’t wake us up when you come through

the door, we’re trying to sleep”. But my parents also left me with a dearth of hobbies that make admissions committees salivate. I’ve never sat down at a piano, never plucked a violin. Karate lasted a week and

swim team didn’t last past the first lap. Then there was the occasional summer camp. I should have done what I knew was best – go to Africa, scoop up some suffering child, take a few pictures, and write my essays about how spending afternoon with

Mr. I-Am-Famous changed my life. Because everyone knows that if you don’t have anything difficult going on in your own life, you should just hop on a plane so you are able to talk about what other people have to deal with. Or at least hop to an internship. Get a precocious-sounding title to put on your resume. “Assistant Director of Mail Service.” “Chairman of Coffee Logistics”. I could have been a gopher in the office of someone I was related to. Work Experience!
