pril is the cruelest month, breeding elections out of the dead land, mixing tax filing and metro dust, stirring Vishu and Easter with spring rain. The above play on T.S Eliot’s monumental poem, “The Waste Land” was inspired by the chaos the elections and metro work progress has brought to the city amidst the happiness of celebrating Vishu and Easter. Prominent journalist Anita Prathap talks to FWD about her work and life and her latest career choice. For Vishu we have various celebrities taking a break to come home to celebrate the occasion with their families. Easter has inspired various rituals all over the world and we not only track them but delivery our recipe interpretations of the Easter egg and the indigenous version of it, ‘the earachi pidi’. Also enjoy our regulars and the celebrated Makeover pages with Remya Nambeesan on the Cover

Researchers develop a dress that turns transparent when excited A group of Netherland researchers has developed a dress that goes see-through when the wearer is sexually aroused or excited. Aptly named ‘Intimacy 2.0’, the dress is made by Studio Roosegarde. Tiny sensors embedded in the dress detect changes in wearer’s body temperature and heart rate. As the heart rate goes up, the e-foils transform into a clear plastic, leaving all bare open. The dress is available in white or black fake leather material. The dress has thin leather strips embedded with electronic-foils around the bust area. Even emotions like excitement, fear and anxiety may cause you expose far more than intended!

tit bits India could help bring back an extinct species of lions DNA tests by an international team of scientists have confirmed the lions in India have close genetic links with the now extinct Barbary lions. This means that “reseeding” Indian lions could bring back the extinct species and reintroduce lions into North Africa. Less than 400 Asiatic lions survive at present on the Kathiawar Peninsula of India and the species is listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Barbary lions of North Africa — including mountainous regions — extending from Egypt to Morocco were also called the Atlas lions and had the most spectacular physical features of all lion species. The lion’s extensive mane made it look majestic. It was a lot larger with differently-coloured eyes to other lions.

Kate Winslet regrets nude scene in Titanic Oscar winning actor Kate Winslet says she is having that sinking feeling at the prospect of being seen naked in the 3D version of Titanic. Winslet, 36, was at the London premiere of the newest version of the 1997 hit film in which she stripped for a scene with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.”I’m not going to look. I’ll be in the bar by that point. I wish I hadn’t shown so much flesh but I was young and I knew I had things to prove,” she said. However, Winslet said she will be happy to watch herself on screen with her two kids Mia, 11, and Joe, eight.

An Indian-origin scientist has developed an incredibly low-cost microscope made almost entirely out of a very unlikely material — paper. The Foldscope, developed by Manu Prakash from Stanford University, contains three stages — a specimen stage in which the slide is placed, an optics stage that holds a ball lens and an illumination stage that contains a Led light. In order to view the specimen sample, users have to place their eyebrow against the paper with their eye close to the lens, in a fashion similar to the use of a traditional microscope. Future Foldscopes will be designed so that each type of disease will have a correlating microscope meant exclusively for that disease, researchers said.

If you’re going for a voluminous top, be sure to keep the rest of your outfit simple and streamlined to balance the look. Add a neon colour to your outfit to brighten it up. Fashion Female grooming

Look chic ‘n’ fabulous for an evening out

Give your off-duty wardrobe a fresh new spin without going overboard; FWD gives tips for a tailored look for a casual evening out that is low-maintenance and easy to pull off.

Jeans Women in their 20s, 30s should try a straight leg jean. A lighter wash jean can call for more attention to the legs, giving your bottom half more presence. A lowrise jean can cause a little bit of tummy spill over for the fleshy. Top Ahead of choosing a sleeveless outfit, be sure to pick styles apposite to your body type. Women with fuller bust opt for v-necklines and petite women for turtle necked top that helps elongate their frames.

Watch For a super casual outlook, go for a trendy strapped watch that looks funky when paired with your attire. But if the evening demands you to be semi-casual, diamonds ought to be on your time machine.

Shoes Clunky shoes look casual, adding elegance to the overall attire. Wearing thick soles with jeans and pencil heels with skirts can be a great pairing. Ultra high heels a nd T-straps can make a short woman appear shorter.

Accessories Aim to add at least three accessories to create a distinct look. While selecting accessories for a single outfit, look out for a unifying theme rather than going for a direct match.

Handbags Tall and thin women must choose handbags with a short, slouchy shape like the hobo and absolutely avoid shoulder bags that make them look even taller. Plus sized must pick a boxy bag to balance out the curves.

It’s been long since we watched Remya Nambeesan in Malayalam ….. Yes! I had been busy, shooting for a couple of Tamil and Kannada movies back to back. ‘Damaal Dumeel’, a black comedy thriller is my next Tamil movie, in which I portray a new-gen gal and then there is ‘Naalu Policeum Nalla Irundha Oorum’, a lighthearted movie, in which I don the role of a school teacher. Also, my preference for exceptionally exciting scripts in Malayalam was another reason. Till date I had donned good roles and I don’t wish to step down in my choices by making compromises. Of all the southern movie industries, which is the trendiest one? I think Kollywood takes the first position, because they are the ‘untried’ who likes to be experimental, vibrant and perky. And close to them are the Telugu and the Kannada film industry. Prioritize - Art films-commercial films-play-

back singing…… From my childhood I had been a trained artist- Carnatic music, classical dance and it was only later that I got into acting. So it makes it knotty for me to prioritize my liking for art. I think I would love to be known as an artist, than an actor. Best advice you’ve been given by an artist…. On the sets of my debut film ‘Sayahnam’, O. Madhavan sir gave me a very valuable advice and it was on the importance of attaining education. He said, “Never miss the opportunity to continue your studies. For sure acting is a talent and it must be taken forward, but that must not be at the cost of losing your education.” As an artist you’ve taken a lot of risks in your career (lip lock). What advice do you have for new comers? It’s each one’s choice. Whoever feels comfortable and confident in taking challenges must set out for it. Regarding the lip lock with Fahadh....my character demanded it so I have no regrets. There were a lot of criticisms, but in fact it wasn’t as bad as we expected. In Kerala, the hitch is people’s mind frame that assumes an actor’s reel life with their personal living. Have you ever faced the casting couch? Honestly, there were real tough times but never a casting couch. During my initial days in the industry, many had plainly snubbed me, had been rude, nevertheless casting couch was not in my list. My father

had forever been the contact person and I think that luckily has helped me to escape such weird encounters. How do you deal with gossips? To begin with, I used to get bothered with rumours, but now I just let it go. Even gossip mongers or the so-called paparazzi should make their presence felt, isn’t it? Are you in a relationship? When do you intend to settle down? No I’m single and I am happy about it. As of now, my career is of foremost priority and I’m not thinking of settling in the near future. One thing people would be surprised to know about you….. To your surprise…..I’m a Soliloquist. I spent a lot of time talking to myself. More often it’s the mirror that captures those moments. I feel that private space makes me analyze myself and my individuality. What brings you the greatest joy? Music, I enjoy singing and I love listening to melodies. Getting compliments from music legends like Chithra chechi gives me immense happiness. She is one person who has always appreciated and encouraged my talent as a playback singer. Your greatest indulgence… Shopping! I prepare a long list of essentials before going shopping, because I thought it could limit my impulsive buying. But for me it’s the other way round.

How do you get groomed for an award night? To be on the safer side I always opt for salwars. I choose a couple of them for the night. I decide on the accessories, footwear two weeks ahead. Unfortunately, whenever I plan to get groomed, it’s a disaster. I have always received compliments when I randomly choose an outfit at the last moment. Who in the film industry badly needs a makeover? How can I say that! I better not comment.

How do you deal with success and failures? For me the road to success were paved with failures. All good things came to me as achievements after a short episode of struggle. Having got to taste both sides of the glamorous industry, I know it’s an unstable platform and so I bump into ups and downs as calm as a matured actress must be treating it. A song that instantly puts you in a good mood…. Amit Trivedi’s music..... His earthy yet peppy numbers are so unique and soothing. A strong woman you look up to….. Jayalalitha. I think she has been a successful fighter all throughout- as an actress and as a politician. It’s only after spending quality time in Chennai, did I get to know how much Tamilians respect and love her. What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger? I wish I knew that someday I was to be an actress. It would’ve at least helped me to take better care of my skin and figure. Your celeb gang of friends and the closest….. Bhama, Bhavana, Kavya, Meera, Rejith Menon, Nivin Pauly, Jayasurya. I’m pretty close with all of them but closest to Bhavana.

38

APRIL 2014

A memorable celebrity hangout…… A houseboat trip along with Meera, Bhavana and Mitra three years back. When was your first crush? In my school days I liked this guy but never told him as I feared that would mar my reputation among my teachers. And by the time I got to be in the good books of teachers, smart girls took away the best… sob sob. Craziest thing you’ve done during your college days…. Walking along the Convent Road in ‘Ghoomar’ attire! Ghoomar is a Rajasthani folk dance and we were performing it on stage in college. For us to reach the science block we had to pass through Convent road. With no options left, we had to walk on the road wearing the costumes as causal as we could, ignoring the stares and whistles. Styling tips…. Always wear a heavy outfit with simple yet elegant jewellery and a simple dress paired with chunky jewellery. Many go wrong with it. Some pair heavy earrings with western wear and sport a bindi. I confess, even I have done it. It’s terrible to watch some people do the same even today.

Do you enjoy cooking? What’s your signature dish? Oh! Yes I do. Onion papad fry is my signature dish. It’s a snack made of shallots, papad, chilli powder, turmeric and salt. Upcoming movies… A Kannada movie starring actor Ganesh and talks are going on with the ‘Philips and the Monkey Pen’ team. As it is in its pre-production stage, I can’t reveal more on it. Apart from movies, next month I will be joining Yesudas sir, Vijay and Swetha for a one month musical show in the US. It’s for the first time that I’m sharing stagespace with the legendary singer. And I’m all excited about it.

Quickies If a character demands you to wear a bikini, will you? I’m not for it. I know that I wouldn’t be comfortable or confident. Apparel in your closet you wear the most….. Jeans and a top. What about jewellery? I don’t have a fancy for gold. But when I shop, I fall for antique gold collections. What can we find on your dressing table? Shades of lipsticks -MAC, Bobbi Brown, eyeliner, perfumes (Versace)…..

hradha Murarka, Creative Director and Designer of Vizyon, believes in creating clothes that can make a statement and leave an everlasting impression. Her signature brands of western wear and resort wear that are known for its rich colour and precision cuts are integral to her aesthetics. What got you into the fashion industry? I have always been inclined towards fashion, art and creativity. Fashion has taken my fancy since I was young. So when I got the right opportunity, I launched my own brand ‘Vizyon’. You established the label “Vizyon’ in the year 2006. What was the line of clothing you had in mind then? When I started Vizyon, shopping for strictly western outfits was almost impossible abroad. Either the necklines were too plunging or the hemlines too rocketing or the fabric was not weather-friendly. And so I launched Vizyon to adapt western ensembles for the global Indian woman, crafting style statements rather than mere clothes. My vision was to present lots of style, exclusivity and very high quality. Colour or cut, shape or silhouette, the idea from the start was immensely international. One quick glance and the latest trends come to the fore in a flash. True to forecasts, Vizyon’s collections feature the current craze, dresses, peplums, skirts, jumpsuits, tunics, cocktail gowns, etc. Could you brief the evolution of designer wear in an ethnic city like Kolkata; the style switch from cotton saris to western wear? Kolkata’s fashion quotient has evolved to a great extent in the past few years. Kolkata is fast making its mark on the fashion map. The style switch from cotton saris to western wear has happened, thanks to modern fashionistas who got lured to experimental and creative innovations in design.

What made you name the label ‘Vizyon’? Vizyon means ‘vision’ in French. The brand is my vision of high end global fashion. It was my dream to have an international brand that assures high quality apparel.

Fashion tips This summer how can a woman dress comfortable yet stylish? Clean, cool and sophisticated. These are some of the characteristics that summer attire should embody. It’s not individual clothing that makes summer casual wear into the fashionable wear. Instead it’s more about layer, mix and match clothing and accessorizing them to attain an air of effortless chic. Pallazo pants to maxi dresses, bling statement necklaces to tribal inspired earrings….these are the many ways a woman can dress stylishly this season. How uniquely can they mix and match summer wear during this season? The key is to balance! You need to know how to put together these items to look absolutely season ready. If you are going to wear palazzo pants, then you should pair it with a scoop neck blouse or an off shoulder top. A wide belt that clinches your waist and shows off your figure is perfect for such an outfit. Pair it with block heels in a neutral hue and lot of bangles in one arm. Finish the look with a silk scarf and an oversized bag. Kaftans also look very contemporary and fashionable. They are best paired with platform pumps or sparkly stacked heels and statement bib necklace. It’s all about understated glamour that looks effortless.

geometric prints, ribbon-work and delicate shaded lace. Share your expertise on how to accessorize a resort wear…… One of the most stylish ways to accessorize any resort wear outfit is by wearing a hat. They are fashionable as well as functional. Using skinny belts help define your waistline, while low-slung belts disguise hips and midriffs. Hobos, totes and bucket style handbags are perfect for daytime excursions and also offer a convenient place to stash sun hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. For evening galas, adorn your outfit with a mini gold or silver evening clutch. Opt for multi-coloured stones or beads that help you add to your tropical look. Shoes should always be comfortable. Embellished and adorned flip- flops and thongs, with or with heels, or ballerina flats are great daytime looks. Kitten heel slides and strappy sandals are the perfect companions for hours of dancing under moonlit skies or late night intimate dinners. Lastly, do not use all the above accessories together on any outfit. While the resort wear industry is still carving a niche for itself in the fashion market, how far do you think the Indian resort wear can meet the Western standards? The world over, resort wear has grown as an independent industry with international labels such as Chanel, Gucci, Prada and Dolce and Gabbana bringing forward the best of their designs. Indian fashion is constantly evolving and we are seeing many interesting advances, right from the revival of Indian textiles to the reinvention of bridal wear from over the top pieces of yesterday to today’s contemporary creations. And now, we are witnessing the emergence of resort wear. With young promising designers of our country, I am happy to say that we are quite at par with the western standards of the resort wear industry. Creativity at its best with exquisite designs is displayed in swimwear, resort wear and luxury loungewear in some of the most coveted designer collections of the country. Many Indian

designers are showcasing their creativity in this arena, as resort wear designers have often been overlooked in the past. How bold are Indian women for resort wear? With the steady change in people’s lifestyle, most urban and semi-urban women are no longer confined to salwar-kameezes. They have altered their perception and have turn out to be independent and bold. Many women shy away from fashionable clothing fearing their plus size appearance, but the plus point with resort wear in contrast to a fitted sheath dress is its design destined to hide flabs. So who knows, it may take some time, but resort wear might just turn out to be the new salwar-kameez for the woman of India. Do you design for both men and women? I only design for women. Where can we bag ‘Vizyon’ label apparel? Vizyon is housed at 23A Ballygunge Place in Kolkata. Besides, the pieces are also available at the Peepul Showroom in Mumbai. Vizyon takes part in a lot of exhibitions that help us reach our target audience across the country. We are also looking at developing e-commerce and should be available online soon. Upcoming collections….. We have just launched Vizyon’s Spring/ Summer’14 collection with neoprene fabrics and solid colours. Featuring neoprene fabric, this collection showcases the many ways to reinvent this new textile, which exudes sensuality and femininity for the woman of today. Creating structured silhouettes with this fabric, the collection includes dresses, skater skirts, peplum tops and easy jackets in a myriad of vibrant colours that maintain classic shapes. With an essence of modernity and fun, vibrant colours and prints, this collection includes fashion forward styles and staple separates to ensure sartorial elegance for the Vizyon woman!

Quickies When does a passion-driven designer reach exhaustion? Being very passionate about designing, I am constantly learning and getting inspired by people, cultures, and works of art by other talented people. Of course, there are highs and occasional toned down moods, but I believe one should relentlessly be inspired to keep their passion alive. Celebs who have flaunted your apparels….. Anita: Straight from the heart…

An up-close and personal talk with Anita Pratap one of the most revered names in Indian Journalism, who has long been an inspiration and courage for scores of women across the world. Text Thabitha Marion Photos Various Sources

he has been there and done it all, covering international warzones to conflicts closer home, reporting from Siachen to Taliban occupied Afghanistan. She is perhaps the first Indian woman journalist who made the world sit up and take notice while she interviewed LTTE chief Prabhakaran, who was once the world’s most elusive man. Anita has always dared to take the most challenging task in her career. With AAP, the lady is all set to fulfill her dreams of serving the society that has been close to her heart. Kerala missed you all these years…..How was the welcome back? Kerala is home, family, life-long friends and so deeply personal. As I say, Delhi is my office and Ernakulam my home because my parents were settled in Panampilly Nagar since retirement in 1982. But last year, the media coverage I received for getting the Sreeratna Award in Thiruvananthapuram, opened my eyes to realize the goodwill I have in my home-state, especially from youth and women. For the young and idealistic journalists, I was a role-model. It struck me that I could make good use of this public respect and support to safeguard and empower women, advance the prospects of the youth, improve civic amenities, promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth in Kerala. are amazed that I speak fluent Malayalam without any trace of English accent. My friends say, you can leave Kerala, but Kerala will never leave you. Why politics now? Like cancer, corruption has devastated politics and has seeped into every sphere, section of society. Our great institutions – the very pillars of democracy – are being wrecked from within because they are mostly headed by political appointees who promote their own political, communal or commercial interests. A few more years of this, India will slide into chaos and violent disruption. It’s not only me, but large number of ordinary concerned citizens with a deep love for our country, who wants to do whatever we can to stem the tide of this rot, sickness and disaster. For sure AAP has made a few mistakes, but Kejriwal had the honesty and humility to apologize even for misdeamenors such as stone-throwing. Compare that to the absence of Modi’s apology for the 2002 communal violence in Gujarat or the Congress’ massacre of Sikhs in 1984! I have absolutely no doubt that this is the last chance in my lifetime to contribute to redeeming Indian politics. My reputation is spotless and much as I see the hideous dangers of entering the current dirty political arena, I feel compelled to do my bit.

devaluation and degradation of women. With the support of all I want to open a new chapter of safety and real empowerment for women. Women empowerment in your words….. When women feel safe, secure and have the freedom to make their own choices. When rivals and critics, (both men and women) cannot resort to intimidation, character assassination to undermine women’s confidence and when they can pursue their well-informed and well-intentioned goals with dignity.

Homeland Honours: Anita receiving the Sreeratna Award 2013 at Trivandrum AAP have had a rapid growth in a short span of time, but do you think this can also give way to internal party issues? It certainly can and it certainly has. Conflict is endemic and it is often human nature to be divisive, especially when people scent success, power and fame. Those who are evil-intentioned cannot be dealt with, but sometimes, anger arises from a sense of hurt that they have not been given due recognition for their work. AAP’s pace and popularity has been unbelievably fast and high that there has simply not been enough time for the leaders at national and local levels to pacify these inevitable resentments. Recently, Mr. Kejriwal had alleged that the media is lying about Modi’s development story in Gujarat and that the media is sold. Are you also of the opinion that today’s media is into false news business? The freedom of Indian media is non-negotiable and inviolable. It cannot be suppressed by any power. Not even Mrs. Indira Gandhi, who misused all the instruments of the State, could threaten or throttle the media during the Emergency. However, sections of the media have surrendered or sold their freedom to lobbies and industrialists, bringing disrepute to the Media. ‘Paid News’ is a contradiction in terms, but it thrives today. So does fixed opinion polls

deviously designed to influence voters. Mr.Kejriwal is highlighting issues that the Chief Election Commission and intrepid journalists of my generation were deeply concerned about. Though the Media talks about self-regulation, nothing has been done internally to eradicate this rot that is undermining honest journalism. You seem to be upset about the plight of women in Kerala…… Yes, I’m. Women in Kerala were safe, strong and secure in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The fulcrum on which Kerala became a role model state was women’s empowerment. But over the last 20 years, I have seen values being wrecked. The commercialization of values has contributed to the danger,

As a leader, would you favour Kochi’s cosmopolitan development or its ethnicity? We have to anchor ourselves in the 21st century by preserving our heritage while modernizing. When one is at the cost of the other, there will be divisions, resentment and a sense of injustice. In such circumstances, whatever decision taken is not sustainable. Traditional Indian thought and values have always emphasized moderation and holistic approaches and that must be the framework for all decision-making. How much has the broadcast journalism changed over the years? Dramatically! In my generation, journalism was all about field reporting. Now it seems The Big Boss From her days at CNN, New Delhi.

more entertainment-driven with studio chat shows substituting for hardcore journalism. The result is a bombardment of opinions and a paucity of facts. Recall your initials days with Sunday Magazine and India Today….. It was real, grass-root reporting, exhausting but oh so rewarding! In the 1980s, Sunday and India Today were superb examples of free and fearless reporting. I took on the land and liquor mafia, corrupt politicians, venal businessmen, polluting industries, even the Indian establishment. There was confidence, a sense of idealism that we were contributing to rectify the ills that plagued Indian society. Alas, corruption, inequality and injustice have only worsened. Though I may be perceived as one of India’s most successful journalists, I feel I am a failed journalist because the mission, for which I entered this field, remains unfulfilled. Somewhere at the bottom of your heart do you feel the Government failed to recognize your work as a journalist? On the contrary! It would have been disastrous if the government recognized and honored me because that could be proof of bias or lobbying. For a journalist, getting recognition from one’s peers and ordinary citizens is the highest reward. Besides, I got the George Polk Award, probably the most prestigious international prize for journalism. What do you think keeps women in Kerala away from mainstream politics? The vilification, the sickening groupism, the baseless allegations, the vicious politicking by opponents and these are not just with politicians. The malice is often embedded in different rungs of society. Your memories about Kerala…. My most precious memories are of my childhood with my cousins in rustic Varapetty, my father’s ancestral home in Kerala and in Mundakayam where

Quickies From where do you draw your inspiration or courage? From the love, faith and hope of my loved ones and the people who really matter to me. Are you going in for an image makeover? No, why should I. I am who I’m. Why haven’t you officially changed your surname even many years after the separation? I got established as a journalist with my name as ‘Anita Pratap’ and it’s also a matter of convenience for my son that makes me stick on to my surname. my maternal aunt lived in a beautiful tea-estate. OMG! What fun we kids had, plucking fruit in the orchards, bathing in the river, fighting for pillows and teasing each other constantly. Our laughter could be heard for miles. You still can when we have our regular family get-togethers. There’re many who wants to know more about the ‘woman’ in Anita Pratap….. I’m a very caring, patient and compassionate person. When circumstances demand, I’m daring. I stand up for the right and can go to any extend for the cause of

social justice. For my friends I’m a ‘mother confessor’. I gift my friends as much as I receive. They share their problems with me in full confidence, knowing that it’s going to stay within me. As a single mother, how challenging was your son’s upbringing with a 24x7 job? Yes, it was quite tough. My son was growing up and at work that was a time when my job demanded me to attend social gatherings, parties and travel. Somehow I balanced it with my set of principles. For instance, come what may I always made sure I was with my son when he had his dinner. That time was all ours- to talk, crack jokes and so even today I can say that he is my best buddy. When he went for his further studies abroad, I feared the ‘empty-nest syndrome’ might take charge of me. Fortunately, one phase was ending there with the evolution of a new life with my husband Arne Roy Walther.

Festival

Easter

Easter: Of traditions, symbols and feast The Easter Sunday is typically the well-attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches, a day that reinstates our faith in truth, god and his sacrifice.

e

aster Sunday sees Christians around the world celebrating the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after his crucifixion. In India we associate the festival with going to church and the breaking of our forty day period of fasting and prayer. Traditions vary across the world and here are some examples...

USA

Germany

Children enjoy the annual Easter egg roll held by the American President on the White house lawns. Easter Monday sees the children race by pushing an egg with a long handled spoon across the grass.

Germans ornament their public wells or fountains with Easter eggs. The Osterbrunnen (Easter well or fountain) denotes the renewal of life, as water is essential to our existence.

Netherlands

Bulgaria

It is customary in the Netherlands to build great fires where the effigy of Judas Iscariot is burnt. The world record for the highest fire at 45.98 meters is held by the hamlet of Espelo.

In Bulgaria the tradition is to knock the tips of Easter eggs together. If the shell of your egg cracks you have to forfeit. This continues till one egg remains and that person will have good luck during the year.

Bermuda Christ’s resurrection is symbolized in Bermuda by flying traditional handmade kites.

Poland The Polish have an addition to their Easter spread. They make a lamb out of butter by hand or mould which represents Jesus as the sacrificial lamb.

Easter Highlight Easter eggs

Trivia

Erachi Pidi

You Need: 8 small egg moulds 300g/10½oz dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) or milk chocolate Baking sheet for piping Easter eggs Knife Cooking brush Edible foil sheets

In New York City, the Easter Parade tradition dates back to the mid1800s, where the upper crust of society attends Easter services at various Fifth Avenue churches then stroll outside afterward, showing off their new spring outfits and hats.

How to make an Easter egg Polish the inside of each mould with a piece of paper kitchen towel and dampen it with a little flavourless oil. Temper the chocolate. Heat and cool the chocolate until it separates cocoa solids and ensures a smooth finish. Pour spoonful of the chocolate into each mould. Swirl around until coated. By using a pastry brush remove the excess chocolate. Leave to set, flat side down on a surface on a greaseproof paper. Repeat the process two to three times to build up a good layer of chocolate in each mould. Wait for about 20 minutes for the chocolate to set in between layers. Draw a flat edge of a knife across the chocolate to ensure a clean edge every time you add a layer. Leave it to chill in a cool place until set. Carefully un-mould the egg halves and place on a clean surface taking care not to handle the chocolate too much as it will start to melt from the heat of your hands. To stick the two edges of an egg together, heat a baking sheet and then place the edges of two halves on it for a few seconds, then gently push the edges together. Decorate the eggs by wrapping them in colours edible foils or by painting them and place them in a basket.

EASTER CULINARY DELIGHT

Ingredients Boneless meat - 1/2 kg Chopped shallots -1 cup Chopped ginger - 2 tsp Green chillies slit lengthwise - 4-5 Crushed pepper - 1/2 tsp Coriander powder - 1 tsp Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds - 1 tsp Cloves - 3 Rice flour - 1/2 cup Hot water - 3/4 cup Thin coconut milk - 1 1/2 cup Thick coconut milk - 1/2 cup Salt to taste Curry leaves Oil

Preparation: Formerly eggs were treated as a forbidden food during the Lenten season and so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, to eat them on Easter as a celebration.

The largest Easter egg ever made weighed over 4 tons and as tall as 25ft high. Twenty-seven bakeries worked for two weeks to make the sweet treat at the Chocolate Festival in Argentina.

Put small meat pieces, chopped ginger, green chillies, cloves, salt in a pressure cooker and cook it until 2-3 whistles and keep it aside. Combine rice flour, cumin seeds, salt, and hot water. Knead it into dough and make small balls like the ones you make for Kozhukkatta. Take a bowl and blend ginger, coriander powder, turmeric powder, cumin seeds and peppercorns to a coarse paste. Heat oil in a pan and add curry leaves and shallots, sauté it until they are soft. Add the spice paste & crushed pepper to the pan and stir fry for a couple of minutes. Transfer the meat and some liquid from the pressure cooker to the pan and combine it well with masala. Add thin coconut milk and boil it for 5 minutes. Put rice balls into the gravy and simmer covered for 20-25 minutes or until the dumplings are cooked. Stir in the thick coconut milk, remove from fire before it boils and serve it warm.

e are all acquainted with the traditions of Vishu: the auspicious sight of Vishukani followed by the Kaineetam, temple visits and a great time for the whole family to rejoice. The peculiarity of celebrating Vishu is quite natural to the Malayalee living in Kerala. Mostly because they are surrounded by their elders who would ensure that traditions are piloted forward to the future generations. However, what do you think has happened to our NRM’s (Non-residential Malayalees) living in different parts of the nation or world? Have the festivity and the traditional values have any impact on them during this special occasion? To uncover this, FWD decided to take a tour around the globe (virtually) and asked a few of our dear friends who miss the special occasion of Vishu in Kerala. Pratheek Vinod, a Malayalee settled

in Bangalore for three generations said, “Obviously! We celebrate Vishu. My mother and before her, my grandmother would take the effort to arrange the Vishukani the night before. I would be woken up half asleep and taken to the pooja room to see the Vishukani. It’s an occasion when the whole family comes together to celebrate. I’m in charge of getting the flowers and other decorations. The Kannikonna is something that you won’t find here in Bangalore. So we adjust it with yellow flowers available in the market. “ As the curiosity increases, I popped my question: “What do you like about Vishu?” Pratheek smiled and said, “It would be the Kaineetam. It’s one of those days when my parents don’t ask me to account the money I get.” In Mumbai, during Vishu, the Bandra-East Malayalee Samajham organize a “Pooja” at their Guruvayur temple by ensuring that nothing has been left-out,

Being away from their homeland does not dampen the festive spirits of Malayalee, when it comes to arranging the ritualistic functions like Vishu or Onam they leave no stones unturned...

from the Kannikonna flowers to the Kanivellari (golden colored cucumbers), selected vegetables, fruits, corns with Uruli, and Nilavilakku - and above all small idol of lord Krishna. Ritika Pillai an active member of the samajham says, “Vishukani is a celebration of welcoming prosperity in the coming year. We as a family have been following this tradition for years. My favourite part of Vishu is the entire family coming together and watching Malayalam movies all day. Trust me; it’s a very rare activity.” Far away in Europe (Ireland), Roshan Menon celebrates this day with his family over Skype (Video call), he wakes up to a call from his mother and without opening his eyes, steps forward to his laptop and opens his eyes to the Vishukani back at home. Vishu is a celebration of everything auspicious and prosperity. No matter where you are, this festival brings you close to your loved ones. Happy Vishu!

Our M-Town celebrities have a hectic work schedule but most of them squeeze out a little time to be with their loved ones. Let’s find out what our celebs are up to this festive season. Innocent

Poornima Indrajith

Nikhil

“I celebrate Vishu every year, sometimes with my family or on the sets. But this time, since I am contesting the elections, I am so immersed with the election campaigns and meetings throughout the day. So I haven’t made plans yet.”

“We’re making plans to fly off to Qatar this Vishu, with the hope that our entire family can have a blast over there. Definitely the celebration is going to be more special as we’re looking forward to the new addition into our family.”

“Mostly it’s a family affair. On Vishu, my father wakes us up at 5 in the morning, blindfolds us one by one for the Vishu Kani, which he had arranged the previous night itself. This is following by a session of bursting crackers which is like a wakeup call for our neighbours. We visit the temple, offer prayers and after having our lunch at home with the usual curries, the entire family say three to four generations get-together at a granduncle’s house and then begins the fun- running around for ‘Vishu Kaineettam’. Though I get a lot of money, it keeps rolling as I gift them to my younger ones. But it’s not for free. They have to touch the feet, get blessings and then only the money is theirs.”

Bhavana “Most probably I will be in Bangalore for the shoot of a Kannada film. As a kid I remember celebrating Vishu in full spirit, but now with my work schedule, I can only daydream of celebrating Vishu with my family.”

Kavya “Every year it’s the same celebration, food, customs and rituals. But this Vishu will be special and a lot happier as there is an auspicious occasion in our family. We will be at Neeleeswaram as it’s my brother’s marriage on April 16th.”

Namitha Pramod “The night before, we would get the ‘Vishukani’ ready with Konnapoo, fruits and other ornamentation. My mother would wake me up in the morning with a warning not to open my eyes. After the ‘Kani’ we would go to the temple and race back home for the ‘Kaineettam’. That was the most exciting part of Vishu during my childhood. We had purses just for the occasion! We also gave an ultimatum to the grownups….nothing less than 100 rupees. After a sumptuous ‘Vishu sadhya’ we would go out and spend all the money we were given on toys and such. All my cousins would be there for Vishu and it was a time for family.”

Meera Nandhan “It so happens that for Onam and Vishu I’m always at home with my family. Like all, I too celebrate the occasion starting with Vishu Kani, Vishu Kaineettam, bursting crackers, sadya and a visit to the temple.”

interview Singer Jessie Hillel

Always on the right note Looking at her talent and success one can only say that she was destined for music. Meet the young child prodigy Jessie Hillel, runner-up of last year’s ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’ TV show who captivated the entire nation through her powerful voice. Text Ronnie Kuriakose Photos Various Sources

T

hey say one has to be at Nashville to break into the music scene. They also say that one has to have, besides musical lineage, golden locks of hair falling down to the shoulder and a hamster for pet etc. Jessie Hillel was 4512 miles away on a tiny little island and was three years old when, unbeknownst to any, the muses took her. If it wasn’t for the Jim Reeves CD that was playing for the umpteenth time in the car, the world would have lost some of its present charm. But clearly, this magnificent a talent would never have gone unnoticed. Now, nine years later, this small girl is walking the same strides as the giants of the music industry and is well capable of dethroning them from their current spotlight. But being the compassionate and genuinely

60

APRIL 2014

humble girl that she is, had only but respect and love for her fellow contestants of New Zealand’s Got Talent that saw her coming runner-up to the 15 year old Clara van Wel in 2012. Talent got her so far, but it was her that won the million hearts in New Zealand and around the

globe. Standing ovations are deficient in that it fails to provide an accurate gesture of the audience’s emotion towards her. After a similar standing-ovation at JTPAC after her performance for the students of Choice School, I sat down with Jessie and her sister – Julie Hillel, a talented pia-

nist in her own right- for a quick chat. Talent, in most cases, is not something you discover by chance or something that you happen to have already. It is often the result of your ardent desire that the universe conspired to help achieve. I asked her whether she has ever dreamt of performing live to an audience.

At the Grammy’s, she said smiling. Apparently, dreams are the way to do it. Not hard work. But then again from the wrong side of the desk, I probably wouldn’t know. The artist, she says, must always be placed between the determinants of their immediate setting – cultural, social etc. Jessie says she owes a lot of her success to her family; especially her mother, who I believe, is her perfect fan. Julie Hillel had been accompanying her occasionally and knows the right trick to ward off any nervousness before the show. They play a geography game together, listing the names of countries until Azerbaijan evades them both. Speaking of geography, growing up in New Zealand has given her easy access to different genres of music. She took pop lessons when she was three and later, at the age of five, decided to pursue classical music. It was her love for classical music that catapulted her to where she is now and with that voice, it is not very surprising. She is well aware of the very grown-

up realities that she may soon have to face while under the limelight. Needless to say her parents have prepared her well. It is very evident from her on-stage charisma and the compassion with which she conducts herself. But for the occasional criticism or bad review that might come her way, she has her own mantra to keep the demons at bay. DON’T EVER GIVE UP. Mistakes can be corrected, she says, and failures can be worthwhile experiences. Sometimes the cheer of a loved one can drown the thunderous boos of thousands. A singer, she affirms with an unquestionable self-belief. It is all she wants to be. To be able to sing everyday is her only aim. I have not thought about anything else, she says. Nevertheless, she is eager to explore songwriting as well. Sky really is the limit for this little champion and Jessie Hillel knows it well.

Certain scenes are unavoidable, some absolutely cry out to be played, and still others are eluded only at the cost of self-contempt. Lots of rudeness, nastiness, touchiness in the world, it is all part, I fear, of living in a city – Kochi.

Satire

For all the salt in the world

Text Ronnie Kuriakose

T

There I sit, calm as you please, about to lay into a nicely done and ample portion of steak in an expensive and quite good restaurant in Wellington Island, when the young woman seated next to me inquires after the salt. I search for the saltshaker among the plate and crystal, flowers and candles, but none is to be found. A small oversight, doubtless. I ask our waiter, a tall and rather well set fellow, for salt for our table, and, in a somewhat dubious foreign accent, he replies, “I am sorry sir, but the chef do not permit salt at the table.” For the next quarter of a minute, I raced my mind to come up with a perfect and unpleasant reply to this prattle. But on this occasion, I was neither quick nor clever enough. So when told that the chef does not permit salt at the table, my face replied, in italics, an empty “O”. Ought I to have been insulted by their desalinization program? I do not think an insult was intended. Certainly there was nothing personal about it; I, after all, did not require any salt, but found the food splendid as it came to the table. No, I took it, if not as a personal insult, then as a strong gesture – even, it does not seem to me going too far to say, a somewhat bullying gesture – that called

62

APRIL 2014

for a strong response. When a chef tells you, in effect, that his food is so perfectly prepared that only a man with an aluminium palate could possibly need to add salt to it, then that chef should have something said to him in the best Fort Kochi accent that I can muster. And that, is the lowest that I can possibly get. I stand up, rolling up sleeves. Do not create a scene. A voice of reason calls out. Hers! The woman beside me, the instigator, proving yet again that salt and women are the roots of all evil. A fleeting anger surged through me. I do not create a scene. I have no love for doing so. But with the passing of years, and the acquisition of greater confidence (or

is it the simple loss of tact?), my feeling is that certain scenes are unavoidable, some absolutely cry out to be played, and still others are eluded only at the cost of self-contempt. Lots of rudeness, nastiness, touchiness in the world, it is all part, I fear, of living in a city – Kochi. So when an auto driver attempts to cheat me on a fare, or an academic behaves snobbishly, or a person in a position of temporary power acts badly, I take a deep breath, exhale slowly, and mutter to myself, “Ready when you are, Ronnet.” Well that is what I call myself in times such as this. Ronnet Claw. Used fairly frequently, when the bad guys in World of Warcraft create a scene and I am called to slay

them all with my kraken-spine sword. As in another age one needed to know how to wield a weapon if one travelled the Delhi highways, so today one needs to acquire the ability to wield the put-down if one is to be assured reasonably safe passage in the contemporary world. Many of us doubtless prefer to think otherwise – to think that good manners and goodwill shall win the day. Even practitioners of old-world courtesies understood the need for the put-down and that it must be delivered in person, not devised while taking a bath and forgotten. Malice formulated in tranquillity is part of a lower kind than that exercised. I do not think of myself as slow witted, but I do, apparently, need time to compose.

Where I grew up, wit was valued much more than learning; in the list of masculine virtues, wit followed only physical courage and athletic prowess. In those days, with a quick tongue, I could destroy a bully in fewer than thirty words, leaving him stammering in his own verbal ineptitude. In its way, it was a feeling of power. It was in a feeling of that same power that I hoped to leave the hotel tonight. But that day, at Wellington Island, with rolled sleeves and a tongue on its toes to throw some Fort Kochi accent, I stood and watched past the young waiter, towards the other end of the hall flanked by silk decorates and golden torches, towards where an old couple were seated and from the looks

of it they were celebrating their anniversary, alone. I used to get excited at the prospect of committing a resounding put-down, but not at the expense of ruining an old couple’s evening. Frankly, I am only the put-down artist I believe I am, in Warcraft, where I am a giant with a krakenspine sword, who could take more than a good punch in the eye. So I thanked the waiter and returned to my meal, which had by then, gone severely cold. The rest of the evening was spent thinking what it would look like if I drove to this hotel tomorrow, head to their kitchen, and drop a twenty five pound of salt at the feet of the chef and cry out,

“What’s shaking baby?”

FWD Cheats Brands

I Feel Used! Exploring India’s five most famous brands who literally love being used. We’re sure you cannot get your hands off them too and secretly wish to know what’s at the tip of their tongue.

Amul Amul as a brand surely gives a taste of India. With the charming Amul Poppet, she toasts us with the wits of current affairs. Amul ads are known to trigger a few controversies, still everyone cannot resist a bit of muska. The controversial ad of all time was perhaps the one in which the UK authorities conducting virginity tests on Indian women arriving at London airport. The text said “Indian virgin needs no urgin’!” Following protests, Amul came up with another billboard apologising for the ad enterprise. Still, Amul is the bread and butter of life and she’s a 22 billion rupees enterprise! Amul would say, “Cows should just stop saying moo, they should go “A mooo l.”

Surf Excel To all the detergent ads that used to show blinding white saris, Surf excel decided to play a little dirty. Let’s say it took a little washing of the mind, Surf Excel played on the paradox of dirt being good, Daag Achaein Hein. They showed children doing good deeds and getting dirty in the

process for so many years. Coming clean, even the mothers were swayed by the ads. We have to say Surf Excel never seems to get off its clean image. Surf Excel would say, “I made the bad look good. I should have just patented this, or Pitbull wouldn’t have stolen my idea. “

Dairy Milk

PEPSI If there’s any brand that could pull it off by saying, bleed Blue, it’s Pepsi. It’s always known for being ‘in’ and fizzing with creativity. Pepsi is bubbling in its tagline, Change the Game. We are sure you could not resist all those ads where they revealed the inspiration behind the

cricketers’ move. If you got time, watch the Kevin Pieterson and Virender Sehwag one in youtube! To seal the deal, Pepsi is more than a thirst quencher! Pepsi would say, “I am sure if I wore the Indian Jersey, I’ll be the cooler person. After all I get you all out of the blues. “

Far from crying over spilled milk, Dairy Milk always eats its way to success. It was easy to win the children’s hearts but boy did they sweeten the adults. They got Amitabh Bachchan nibbling on it, talk about child’s play. 70% of Indians are Dairy Milk lovers! The iconic Cadbury’s Dairy Milk logo of two glasses pouring milk into a chocolate block has survived the test of time and always looked into inner child in all of us. Cadbury Dairy Milk would say, “I don’t run the world, it’s far too small. I rule the Milky way!”

Bru It’s got a share of 46.9 % in the Indian Market. That’s certainly a lot more, when we have to share a cup of our coffee with someone. Playing around with happiness, it did have to deal with a little bit of grumpiness. Bru was looked upon as the lazy thing a housewife would do. After all, filter coffee was made with love. Now Bru is the coffee one can never resist having with someone they love. Bru would say, “I know I may be an instant coffee powder, but I think of myself as an instant Charmer. “

FWD Finds Smartphone Addiction

Outsmart those

Smartphones A new research says the greater the overuse of smartphones, the greater the risk for severe psychopathologies in adolescents. FWD traces how a tiny screen can have a hypnotic effect upon society and ways to detox oneself from it.

T

his month’s FWD Finds warns you of a future epidemic. We thought of bringing up this topic as one of our colleague had become a prey to it. It’s sort of an obsession which can be termed as ‘Smartphone Slavery’. In a world of tablets, smartphones and video games, it’s natural for us to get distracted. “Technological advancements are a boon and bane. While on one side it makes us communicate, travel and save time, in many ways we’re becoming slaves to tech-

nology. An overwhelming number of people are addicted to their cell phones and are in denial over it causing restlessness, insomnia, anxiety and even depression,” says Dr. Krishna Prasad Sreedhar, Psychology (Head of Department), University of Kerala. Cell phone over-use, particularly with respect to its use by teenagers and young adults has w been topic of discussion for quite some time. Yet it continues to be an intruder in our social and personal life. “In a marriage it comes in between a husband and wife in the form of a ‘lover’ who steals

a lot of their ‘We’ time. Counsellors have received complaints that when one of the couple wanted to be with the other, he/ she was found romancing with the iPhone,” he adds. Several times we get hold of our phones not necessarily because we really need to check them that many times, but for the reason that it has become a compulsion or an addiction. A new study has come out with an astonishing fact that people don’t spare their Smartphones even during private times on the john. Now that evidently shows how intimate we are

to this digital Swiss army knife that has replaced alarm clocks, watches, cameras, books and even lifelong friends. Now how do we conclude whether a person is a Smartphone addict or not? “Addiction is a condition that fallout when a person ingests a substance (alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (gambling) that can be pleasurable, but the continued use of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships or health. And here the object of dependence is the Smartphone.

Daniel Radcliffe - “I don’t have Twitter and I don’t have Facebook, and I think that makes things a lot easier”.

“Nomophobia or the fear of being without a smart phone is the foremost indication. It is a rush of anxiety or fear which he/she undergoes on being technologically disconnected from the loop of friends, family, work and the world. ‘Phantom Cell phone Vibration Syndrome’, a compulsive need to check the mobile for each buzz is an added symptom,” says Vipin V Roldant, HOD and Chief Consultant Psychologist, Sunrise Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. “Flipping through tweets, checking mails in between face-to-face conversations, logging into Facebook many times a

I find it dehumanising to constantly check emails or social sites which have become so fashionable.”. day, an emotion of incompleteness until a picture is posted on FB, recklessness, mood swings, cellphone use on the dining table are all noteworthy signs of Smartphone addiction,” he adds. If you’re a tech savvy person, we remind you that your Smartphone has a new feature? Along with the fancy features a Smartphone promises, it also gives us a feature that makes the user obese. Constant users are found to be more inclined towards sedentary behaviour, and medical practitioners have also revealed that cases of lower levels of cardio respiratory fitness

5 Signs that calls for Digital Detox • You continuously check your phone even during a conversation with your loved one. • Ringing up people makes you nervous as you’re so used to conveying messages via texts or emails. • Getting tempted to facebrag about something either you or even your friends did. • Reading official emails on a holiday, even after your boss granting leave for a peaceful break. • A feeling of being ignored when your friends don’t pay attention to your posts or uploaded pictures.

are more often found in them than those who use their phones reasonably. Posture -Have you ever considered for a moment, your position when you’re focused on the small screen of your Smartphone? The longer we continue to be in an ergonomically wrong posture, faster our body reacts with some sort of a payoff. It could be a neck pain, back pain, text claws or sore eyes. Most of us look down while using a mobile phone. Experts have conducted studies that this prolonged bending down is a posture that adds strain to the neck and a position that could cause cervical disc herniation. Staring at iphone screens for long hours can also dry our eyes and are believed to be a reason for cataract in future. Being glued to tech devices have also resulted in soreness and cramping of fingers, commonly known as text claws. It’s a physical condition called tendinitis that causes inflammation of tendons and of the cords that attach bones to the muscles. The major reason for the stiffness of fingers is the overuse and repetitive motions of the hands or fingers. And many a times the rhythmic use of fingers can aggravate the pain, making the discomfort rise to one’s wrist and forearm. If medical attention is not given at the right time, muscles can become fibrotic and scarred, leading to loss of strength in hands and fingers, followed by unbearable pain. Putting hands together in a prayer-type gesture and holding it for several seconds once in a while after texting can be a

68

APRIL 2014

good work out for your hands to prevent them from being anesthetized of tendinitis. As for school-going kids, the overuse of technology takes a toll on their academic performance, health and behavioural patterns. “Kids who are so engrossed in their Smartphone slowly but surely tend to lose interest in spending time with family and in due course become aggressive,” says Vipin. In children, excessive iPhone use can affect them both physically and mentally. “Children as they grow undergo two processes – growth and development of the brain and body. Gadgets like these retards growth in children resulting in ill health and obesity. Modern education emphasizes ‘mental speed’ and modern devices do increase a child’s mental speed but their ‘problem solving capacity’ in real life situation may become poor as it requires not only mental speed but also physical speed,” says Dr. Krishna. He believes that the latter can be acquired only through actual physical and motor activities like running and climbing. They must be exposed to cooperative play situations with friends which are deprived in the above gadgets. There are things Smartphones give us that no sane person would choose to forgo. But then I too feel a digital detox once in a blue moon can mean a lot to our draining health. So let’s try making Smartphone’s our slaves rather than the other way round.

Robert Pattinson – “That thing causes me so many problems! I don’t want to contribute to it whatsoever. That thing is a nightmare, the worst invention ever.”

Julia Roberts – “I compare it with a cotton candy. It is something that looks appealing and is only momentarily pleasing, but indulging in it you will end up with sticky fingers.”

Kate Hudson – “I’m scared of all the publicity and the attention I get on these social networking sites.”

Hong Kong

Eclectic Hong Kong Chaotic in its own way, the land of martial arts, Hong Kong has a lot to offer for fun-lovers.

H

hong Kong has known colonization from the Chinese, Japanese and British imperial rule; the region has experienced a revolutionary era inspired by the Cultural Revolution in China. Enclosed by the Pearl River Delta and South China Sea, Hong Kong is also known as “Pearl of the orient”. Amid soaring towers there are ancient rituals, vibrant cultural scene born from the influences of its Chinese roots and colonial connections. Hong Kong is a world city and has all the elements of one: phenomenal energy, smog, constant noise, and millions of people crammed between its profusion of skyscrapers. But it also has hushed temples, quiet park corners, and is surrounded by idyllic island oases.

Getting In Hong Kong maintains a separate and independent immigration system from that of mainland China. This means that, unlike mainland China, most visitors do not need

72

APRIL 2014

Things to Know Medical services The standard of medical care in Hong Kong is generally excellent but expensive. Always take out travel insurance before you travel. In the case of an emergency, call ambulances (999) Public Transportation options are many and are extremely convenient. Tourists are recommended to purchase an Octopus Payment Card, available for prices ranging from HKD 150 to a maximum of HKD 1000. It is useful for payment on public transportation, vending machines and even some local food joints. to obtain visas in advance. However, it means that a visa is still required to enter mainland China from Hong Kong. By plane Hong Kong International Airport Hong Kong International Airport which is

also known as Chek Lap Kok is the main port for visitors to get to Hong Kong.

Getting around By bus There are three types of bus available in Hong Kong, operated by a multitude of companies. Signs in English can be sparse and finding your bus stop can get difficult. Buses are pretty much your only option for travelling around the south side of the island and Lantau. By taxi Taxis are plentiful, clean and efficient. They are extremely cheap compared to many other large cities. There are three types of taxi in Hong Kong: red, green and blue classified on the basis of fare. The red or the urban taxis serve all areas of New Territories, Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The green which is the second most expensive, serve only parts of the New Territories, including Sha Tin, Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, Fanling, Sheung Shui, Pak Tam Chung, Tai Po etc. Lantau taxi or the blue taxis run

exclusively on southern Lantau Island, Tung Chung, the Airport and Disneyland, thus they are restricted to a small area.

Things to do Victoria Peak Looking down at the city from this famous vantage point, you’ll see one of the finest harbors on Earth and a skyline so improbable, audacious and lofty that Manhattan’s looks provincial by comparison. Beyond the mountains to the north of the city, the rest of China simmers and strains. Everything you’ve heard about Hong Kong’s restlessness and energy is dramatically reaffirmed by the view from the Peak. Charter a Junk Everyone thinks of Hong Kong as a city, but in fact it is a sprawling archipelago of 260 islands. If you have never seen their rugged coastlines or deserted coves, hire “junks”, local ships that are sturdy and sail long distances. Load a picnic and a coolbox of beer and wine, and set off through the scattered islets. Lantau Island and Giant Buddha Get spectacular views of Lantau Island, and visit the Giant Buddha at Po Lin. The statue reaches more than 111 feet (34 meters) high, making it the world’s largest seated, outdoor Buddha. Happy Valley Racecourse An outing at the races is one of the quintessential Hong Kong things to do, especial-

ly if you happen to be around during one of the weekly Wednesday evening races here. The punters pack into the stands and trackside, cheering, drinking and eating, and the atmosphere is electric. St Andrew’s Anglican Church Hidden on the top of a knoll between the Former Kowloon British School and the Hong Kong Observatory, is a charming building in English Gothic style. It is Kowloon’s oldest Protestant church and is dedicated to the patron saint of Scotland. Built in 1905 in granite and red brick, the church was turned into a Shinto shrine during the Japanese occupation.

Stay Four Seasons Hotel ($620 per night) The Four Seasons arguably edges into top place on the island for its amazing views

and its location close to the Star Ferry, Hong Kong station, the inland and Sheung Wan. It also features palatial rooms and a glorious pool and spa complex. Its restaurants, Lung King Heen and Caprice, both have three Michelin stars. W ($ 375 per night) W features uber-stylish interiors created by an Australian and a Japanese designer, with rooms named ‘wonderful’, ‘spectacular’, ‘fantastic’…which are in fact, quite wonderful and spectacular, especially with the views from the 36th floor and up. Courtyard by Marriott ($172 per night) This hotel juggles luxury with limited space and it works. Most rooms offer harbor views and are smartly decorated with modern furnishings. The plump beds and high-thread-count sheets guarantee you a good night’s sleep. Service is impeccable.

Worlds dangerous tourists spots

A

A holiday or vacation is associated with relaxation, merriment, fun and so on…but of late tourists are demanding visits to disaster zones, a trend never seen before

ccording to a recent report, Japanese authorities are seriously contemplating to turn the disaster site of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into a tourist destination. Last year, the notorious Missouri State Penitentiary, nicknamed “the bloodiest 47 acres in America”, was opened to visitors to see the gas chamber once used for executions. And many more such macabre jaunts may be opened for public in future. Definitely, disturbing news for many but for those who want to evoke dark fascination in them, this is the destination.

Polar vortex, United States of America The deadly Polar vortex turned US a hotspot of visual treats. The record-breaking chill across the U.S. and Canada was so frigid it literally stopped Niagara Falls in its tracks. One would think the icy cold would keep tourists away, but those who enjoy taking photos rugged up to snap the conditions, producing exceptional images they wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity to capture. Tourists were out in force with their cameras at the Prospect Point at Niagara Falls State Park and Rainbow Bridge, where frozen mist and solid ice was clearly visible.

Chelyabinsk Meteor, Russia Last year, an asteroid weighing at least 10,000 tons and traveling at more than 41,000 mph entered Earth’s atmosphere, morphed into a fireball and exploded approximately 14.5 miles above Russia’s southern Ural region injuring more than 1500 people and damaging thousands of structures. Today, it’s attracting tourists. Visitors to Southern Ural can follow an unofficial meteorite trail, stopping off at Chelyabinsk, the city directly beneath the meteor’s explosion. Lake Chebarkul, where one of the largest chunks of meteor fell; and Ilmen reserve, which boasts a small exhibit of meteor fragments. Regional authorities are even planning a celebration on the event’s one-year anniversary, February 15, 2014.

Pompeii, Italy The mother of all disaster tourism sites, Pompeii lay undiscovered for approximately 1500 years. When nearby Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, it buried the ancient Roman city—along with neighboring Herculaneum—under mounds of ash and pumice, ultimately preserving everything from its streets to its frescoes. Pompeii was initially rediscovered in 1599. More recently, 300 human skeletons of people trying to flee the eruption were found on a nearby beach. Today, Pompeii is part of the larger Vesuvius National Park and is one of Italy’s most popular tourism attractions, with approximately 2.5 million visitors annually.

Soomaa Floods, Estonia An Estonian region hit by floods is using this natural disaster to attract visitors and organize canoe tours through flooded territories. The end of March and early April is the time when this unique phenomenon can be seen. Visitors are most attracted by the Soomaa floods or the fifth season, which follows the thawing of snow and heavy rains. During this period, all low-lying forests, roads and even yards are flooded and people can only get around by boat.

Prypiat, Ukraine Ever since Japan’s earthquake and tsunami prefaced a near-nuclear catastrophe in March, visitors have flocked to the doomed wasteland in the Ukraine, where bona fide disaster struck in 1986. Now, droves of tourists are flocking to Chernobyl’s ruins, a ghost site the Ukrainian government claims is safe. Still, Chernobyl tours come with strict rules because of the chance of lingering radiation. Visitors are not to touch any onsite vegetation, and are even forbidden from eating outdoors or setting their tripods on the ground.

A Red Marvel

Demand for technically advanced premium vehicles are increasing in Kerala. An SUV that has captivated hearts of car enthusiasts is the enhanced powerful version of Range Rover Sport.

S

akeer Hussain, Managing Director of Rahna Homes & Developers is passionate about cars and owns around 18 cars and the latest addition to the list is the Range Rover Sport, which is his 19th car. He loves driving and takes escapade with his beautiful machines across India. He has travelled far and wide and has been to over 140 countries.

Why Range Rover Sport? With all the travel I do, I spotted this beautiful vehicle and had my eyes set on it. The moment it released in India, I booked it. It is a very fast vehicle with beauty. Why did you choose Muthoot as your dealer? It is obviously because of the Management of Muthoot, they have a dedicated team and their hospitality cannot be compared.

It’s always a beautiful experience when at the Muthoot showroom. Why did you choose the color red? Red is an exclusive color. It is very vibrant and attractive. I have a Range Rover Evoque in white and wanted to have a red, Range Rover Sport. Did anyone motivate you to buy the Sport? No. It was my decision entirely. I set my heart on it, the first time I saw it. What did you do after you bought the vehicle? I was very excited after buying it, the moment I got out of the showroom, I drove off to Ooty with my wife. My favourite experience with this car was when we were on the entwining hills of Ooty and the gazing eyes around were filled with admiration for my car. I was overwhelmed and at the same time, far too humbled. It gave me immense self confidence and the power of the vehicle was too brilliant. I love my new car and I would like to thank Muthoot dealers who made my dream come true. They have been extremely helpful and supportive.

Ahead of

time

The Range Rover’s journey to mightiness has been long and astonishing. FWD takes a look at its ground-breaking history ptly marketed as a “Car for All Reasons” in its initial days, the story of Range Rover begins in 1966, when the Land Rover Company basking in the success of its Land Rover Station Wagon, realised the demand for a “build to go-anywhere” vehicle. Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV) like

a

the International Harvester Scout and the Ford Bronco which offered a different blend of off- and on-road capability that had found strong foothold in North America. Thus, began the work of a revolutionary car led by British car designer Charles ‘Spen’ King. On June 17, 1970, BL’s Range Rover was unveiled to press by the chairman of new owner, Leyland, Donald Stokes. The

vehicle was revolutionary, innovative and modern, the Range Rover sported crisp look, aluminium bodywork, mellifluous 3.5-litre V8. Following this release, the first major revisions to the vehicle came in 1973, when the Power Assisted Steering (PAS) was added. Little changed until 1981 when fourdoor was launched and the very next year an automatic gearbox is introduced on the Range Rover for the first time. In 1987 a new version was introduced in North America, it was fitted with a more powerful fuel injection engine. For other markets, a diesel version is also made available, increasing total Range Rover production to a record 20,000 units for the year. In 1992 the LSE version with 4 .2 litre V8 petrol engine was introduced that gave more leg room to the passengers in the back. In 1995, Range Rover celebrated 25 years of continued production and the second-generation model was awarded the ‘Best Off-Roader’ accolade by What Car? Magazine. The first generation of Range Rover was produced from 1970 to 1996 and was called the classic Range Rover from 1994.

The SUV was replaced in 2013 with an advanced version. And in 2014 the Land Rover Range Rover Sport is completely redesigned with refined road manners; powerful engines; seven-passenger seating and true off-road capability. On 1st July 2010, Range Rover celebrated its 40th birthday. The name of the all-new compact Range Rover was announced “Range Rover Evoque 3 door”. The same year a “five door Range Rover Evoque” was unveiled. A new version of the vehicle known as “Range Rover Evoque Cabriolet” was introduced in the Geneva Motor Show in 2012. The same year an Alloy version of the vehicle was shown to public at the Paris Motor show. It was 500kg lighter than it’s the previous model L322.

The second generation project of Range Rover was called P38A and the vehicle was called 38A or mk2. Under Ford ownership, the third-generation Range Rover was launched in 2001. It leads the class, and is more capable on and off road than ever and had an interior that was hailed as a rival to a RollsRoyce for its design, refinement and comfort. V-Guard office

All work and no play‌..

Office spaces are turning unconventional, it is learned that creative work environment helps stimulate minds and inspire innovation. FWD explores the V-Guard Vennala office that has won the Golden Leaf Award for Architectural excellence. Text Maria John Photos Asmeena

o

ver the last two centuries the work place has undergone dramatic changes. Globalization and the presence of the internet have increased the stress on companies to maintain their output and efficiency. Companies are vying each other to attract and keep the immense talent that is available in the world today. These phenomena have changed the way we view work and personal life. A culture in itself has evolved where the wholesome development of the firm along with each employee is essential to the company’s business success.

Making a difference V-Guard, one of the most affluent businesses in Kerala, is changing the way we look at our office buildings. Winner of the 2009-2010 Gold Leaf Awards, the V-Guard office in Vennala is a 12 storied green spectacle. Plants spill out from every floor turning the structure into a vertical garden. The office is visible from all around as it is the only tall structure in the neighbourhood. Kochouseph Chittilappilly, the man behind the organization, wanted an office away from the noise and traffic of the city. Architect Roy Antony was in the middle of researching office buildings when Mr. Chittilapilly came to offer him the project. They both agreed that the building should be environment friendly. Having looked at

86

APRIL 2014

several office spaces in the tropical regions of the world, Architect Antony formulated a building that would use natural light and ventilation. With the floors being cantilevered from a centralized core, the spaces became a blank canvas for the architect to render. Verandahs of 2.5m width were designed for the circumference of every floor. These verandahs are used as walkways and has planter boxes creating another layer to the façade. The south and the west of the building has more plants to block the sun. Since the air had to pass through the green screen equipped with drip irrigation to enter the building, it makes it cooler. Therefore, the office does not use much artificial lighting or air conditioning. The façade of the building becomes an interesting play of lines, planes and plants. The V-Guard office has rainwater harvesting plants, water treatment plants and solar panels which have cut down the bills to 1/4th of what they could have been. “The client took so much interest in the project and gave me

a free hand. He was with us every step of the way, asking questions and looking at details. Clients like that are rare. I had just one draughtsman and a computer at that time. It was an exciting opportunity for me” says Architect Antony. Much has been said about the building and its architecture. The first look at the building as you walk in from the gate is soothing to the eyes. You can feel that the atmosphere is cooler. But how has it actually influenced the environment in the office? Has it enhanced their work culture? The answers to both those questions are yes.

Lessons on light and ventilation Entry to the building is through a double height reception with massive pivoted wooden doors. The reception is simple and straightforward, with a display wall full of awards they have won. As you walk into the office space from the lift, you notice that there is

no glare from a tube light nor the stale air of an air conditioned office. The atmosphere is fresh and no fans or lights are switched on. There is copious amount of light flooding through the window, though one would not expect that after seeing the building exterior. “The old office was a quarter of this one. Now the workplaces are so spacious. I am proud to show people around. I see visitors look around in wonder.” says Mr. Ratish, Chief Officer Corporate Communications. Outside the window is lush vegetation and a beautiful view of Cochin irrespective of which floor you are on. The work spaces are arranged to be as nearer to the windows as possible. The concept of only corner offices having a good view is made irrelevant. The green area on every floor invites birds and so far has not had an insect problem. There is a considerable gardening team to maintain the plants. Shoulder high dividers partition the office into private spaces. There is a conference room on every floor and seating areas for visitors. All the employees are quick to remark that the natural atmosphere has definitely improved their efficiency. “There is a feeling of openness. It is very conducive to work. I feel less tensed and taking a break from the computer screen to look at all those plants is soothing. We are also able to work better as a team.” says Sheeba from the

88

APRIL 2014

purchase department. You can certainly feel the camaraderie and energy in the space. Fresh air and natural light really does do wonders.

Exploring the interiors The interiors are simple with a neutral colour palette, creating a stark contrast to the flowering plants in the verandah. “The building is well crafted. I love the little gardens. You need to take small breaks from work and they help a lot. It has certainly contributed to the work culture here. The interiors give you enough lee way to be creative. Normally you are confined to your work space. Here you can move about. You won’t notice the heat of the summer while you are here” says Mr.Nandagopal, Senior GM Corporate Communications. From around 6 square feet per person in their old office the space is now ample for an employee and two visitors. Enough storage is provided at the desk. “We were really cramped in the three storied office before, though that meant I was familiar with every person from every department. Now each department has been segregated into different floors. It is not as easy to maintain contact but the refreshing feeling that the new office has is exemplary. I don’t realize the time flying” says Sumesh who has been with the firm since 2004. Both Mr.Nanadagopal

and Mr.Sumesh are vehement about the monsoons. They exclaim that the office is the best place to enjoy it and you can see the rain approaching from miles away.

Keeping active The view of Cochin from the 12th floor is breathtaking. The top floor is an open space with a garden, seating area and space for a gathering. Competitions are held every year between teams from each floor. The staffs declare it is a matter of pride and trophies are displayed in the winning floors. Team building activities and motivational seminars are conducted at least twice a year. There are facilities for staff to play badminton. Yoga is conducted 3 days a week. A treadmill has been provided. Other facilities include guest rooms, a library, and an airy canteen. The work culture inspired by the management and the architecture is exemplary. The encouraging and motivating atmosphere provided by the employer makes the employees proud to be part of the company. Their sense of loyalty and dedication is a result of that. There are employees who have been with V-Guard for over twenty years. The architecture inspires efficiency and productivity. V-Guard is planning another building with all the lessons learned from the Vennala office because where there are good spaces there are motivated people.

relationship Women taking the lead

Unleash the seductress

in you L

adies, why do you wait for the cute guy at the bar to ask you for your phone number or your man to take you to bed? Instead, why don’t you make the first move in the battle zone of sex? We seem to be still stuck in the Romeo and Juliet era, waiting for the men to start the war. You can call the shots ladies; it’s not a man’s job anymore.

96

APRIL 2014

All men have a well-guarded desire; they all secretly fantasise their partners to take charge of the sex session. Read to know how you can master the art...

Confidence is attractive

Being open

You might be pleasantly surprised at the reaction you get. Men seem to like the confidence in women who seem secure enough to make the first approach. Having more control over your love life as well would urge you to invest more time in yourself in terms of confidence, health etc. Men will also be tempted by your poise and you can keep them intrigued. So if you want it, go get it!

Being afraid of judgment is understandable. People believe that being open about your emotions make you vulnerable. The truth is that we respect people who are open and confident in all realms of life. It is also an indication that you are emotionally secure. Talking, discussing and expressing your desires help to satisfy both of you sexually. Thus women get greater control over their romantic life and men get motivated by them.

The balancing act There seems to be a notion that the person on the receiving end of all the romantic advances has an upper hand. A good relationship is where two individuals value each other equally. There is no question about who has the upper hand or otherwise. Men do complain about having to initiate sex all the time. If both parties invest equally in the relationship there are likely to be less issues.

Things to remember Relationships are not a war so don’t put yourself in combat mode. Remember that there are nervous guys too. Be ready to dash if the guy seems to be a jerk. Act confident without coming across as desperate. Mostly just be true to yourself and act natural.

Rules of the game Talking about sexuality and relationships is still taboo in our culture. If women also entered the arena, the dynamics of the game would change. Women would not be looked at as a prize or trophy to be won. If we level the playing field then it’s a fair game, keeping in mind that rules of attraction differ among each person or couple.

The game plan Have some fun instead of over analyzing the situation. You can stop running through the lists in your head about how you look, whether he likes it or where this is going. Invest your efforts in getting to know the person instead of worrying about the rules. This leads to understanding both your wants and needs. 2014 APRIL

Mangiare per vivere e non vivere per mangiare is an Italian proverb that can be easily translated as “Eat to live and not live to eat.” This month at Roma, Chef Joji shares his dish that’s central to the hearts of all Italian cuisine lovers. There are so many trends evolved in cooking, what’s yours? I don’t really believe in fusion, what’s old fashioned just stays. How is Kochi warming up to Italian food? It’s a relief to see the big change; Kochi is now enjoying the Italian cuisine and moving out of the biryani trend. I think people now understand the work behind making a great dish. They have an idea of the effort it takes and they are gaining knowledge with the help of travel and lifestyle television shows. They are more demanding with what they want on their plate from the type of cheese to the sauce. Now we can’t underestimate them! What makes Italian cuisine a roar? Italian cuisine is a success because the ingredients are simple, natural and easily available. With fresh ingredients it also goes well with the local palette. Italian and Indian food have a similar palette, yet what makes them distinct? Both cuisines have great strengths. Italian cuisine has a healthy balance of nutrients from the carbohydrates to vegetables such as tomato and cheese. Indian food is enriched with spices. Usually spices are seen as taste enhancers but it also has medicinal values. Yet Indian cooking can also focus on the quality of minimalism that’s seen in Italian cuisine. What’s on the plate? room, and mozzarella… How does your style reflect on this dish? The ideal dish has to be both simple and complicated. The chicken looks simple but the complexity is in the stuffing. It consists of spinach, mushroom, and cheese. The beauty of it is in the color because of the spinach. What completes this meal? Enjoy it with an ample amount of time. You should never rush yourself to enjoy a good dish. A good selection of either red or white wine will go along with the meal. Dinner would be the best time. There’s an important emphasis on healthy food? The most important thing about food is finding its balance. Apart from enjoying its taste one must look at its nutritional value. In my signature dish it’s a combination of sauce, vegetables, starch, spinach and mushroom. Also use the right ingredients in a balanced way. For example, olive oil is a type of oil that becomes unhealthy on heating.

Quickies A fine dining tip… Make reservations it certainly saves time! Personal recommendations at Roma Steak Beef served as medium Pork Chops Chef’s signature dish What’s the one dish you’re grateful the world discovered? Make home safe for

elderly Falls are one of the leading causes of injury and death in adults over age 65, so do everything possible to prevent them. snapshot

10 Safe Home Tips for seniors Use bathroom rugs with non-slip grip on the back to avoid sliding on the floor or tripping over wrinkled mats. Equip showers and surrounding walls with sturdy grab bars anchored to wall studs so they can support the full weight of an adult. Place a stool in front of the bathroom sink. This allows you to sit down while you brush your teeth, comb your hair. If your vision has declined, consider using contrasting colors for the walls, floor, toilet seat cover, towels, and grab bars Have nonskid mats on the floor of a shower or bathtub. Stairs must be well lit. Better to have light switch at the top and bottom of the stair. Let the stairs be framed with handrails that run the entire length of the staircase on either side Have an electrician check the fuse box or circuit breakers to ensure that the wiring in the house is done properly. Never run electrical cords under a carpet or rug.

Avoid using floor polish or wax on the floors, as it makes the floor surface very slick. Chairs and couches should have an armrest for the elderly to make it comfortable for them to standup. Make sure every room has a smoke detector. Check if the kitchen counter height and depth is comfortable for the elder.

DIY Nail Art-Mixed Metal Manicure

Stuff you need :Base & top coat nail polish, Dark gold nail polish, Light gold nail polish, Gold glitter nail polish, Cello tape Shape your nails, buff them and apply a base coat And once the base coat dries up, apply 1-2 coats of darker gold nail paint. Get your glittery gold and apply it on top of the light gold on your ring finger. Make sure your dark gold nails dry completely before the next step! This can sometimes take up to 30 minutes Take a piece of tape and put it on your nail at an angle of your choice. It’s easiest to tape all of your nails at once so are not messing around with tape with wet nail polish. Apply the light gold as if you are painting your whole nail. You do not want to paint to be too thick so try to stick to just one coat. Let the paint dry for about 5 minutes and then remove the tape slowly. Apply a top coat and your manicure is complete!!
