DR. MARION J. BROOKS Class, professional excellence, selflessness…these are just a few of the words that describe Dr. Marion J. Brooks. The first honoree for the Living Legends Awards, Dr. Marion J. Brooks is the standard bearer for our Fort Worth legends.

Born on February 15, 1920 to Mr. and Mrs. Roy and Eula Brooks, Marion “Jack” Brooks was raised on the South Side of Fort Worth. Dr. Brooks was a graduate of the 1936 Class of I.M. Terrell High School and would go on to earn degrees from Prairie View A&M College in 1940 and Howard University in 1951. It was on Christmas Day in 1945 that Dr. Brooks took one of the most important steps of his life, marrying then Marie Louise Norris. After obtaining his medical degree from Howard, Marion and Marie Brooks returned to Fort Worth where Dr. Brooks began his medical practice in the Black Business district.

Many in Tarrant County would come to love and respect the man affectionately called “Dr. Jack.” Years later, those who never met Dr. Brooks still feel his impact as his efforts would lead to the integration of Fort Worth’s hospitals. He also founded the Sickle Cell Anemia Association of Texas and Tarrant County Precinct Workers Council. Still others would know Dr. Brooks as their Sunday School Teacher, as he also helped in the formation of Morningside United Methodist Church. Dr. Brooks found time to be active outside of his practice, including contributions to the McDonald Branch YMCA, Free and Accepted Masons-Prince Hall, the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the NAACP just to name a few. His memory and legacy march on.

Greetings! On behalf of the Beta Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. I bid you a hearty and fond welcome to the 25th Annual Dr. Marion J. Brooks Living Legends Awards. This evening we will celebrate the achievements and contributions of four of Fort Worth’s finest. Goodwill is a cornerstone of our community and the measure to which these honorees have contributed is to be commended.

The Dr. Marion J. Brooks Living Legends Award is rooted in the works of a selfless man who dedicated his life to healing the bodies, minds, and spirits of those in need. To that legacy we add the name of Kerven W. Carter, an educator, administrator and mentor who has likewise touched the lives of countless Fort Worthians and citizens of the world.

The 25th annual class of Living Legends recognizes individuals for their contributions in the fields of law, civic service, medicine and spiritual enrichment. We thank them for the hours, days, months and years dedicated to serving as leaders and laborers in the struggle to uplift others.

So, we say thank you to the 2018 class of Living Legends: Mrs. Mattie Compton, Esq., Mrs. Deralyn Riles Davis, Rev. Ralph W. Emerson and Dr. Dwight Ruddock, for their tremendous service. Not ones to rest on your past accomplishments, we know that you will continue to amaze us as you continue your individual and joint efforts to impact the community through your deeds and community service. I am equally honored to recognize the inaugural class of Legends in the Making: Devan Allen, Jeremiah Anderson, Dr. Kelley Mills and Dante Williams.

We look forward to celebrating your accomplishments, seeing you further your roles as future trailblazers throughout the community as well.

To those who receive scholarships this evening we say job well done, but the award you receive tonight is merely one key to a world filled with endless possibilities. Open the door, walk in and absorb all that life has to offer.

I am equally excited about the inaugural class of Legends in the Making, Devan Allen, Jeremiah Anderson, Dr. Kelley Mills and Dante Williams. You are the new generation of leaders that our communities need and proudly celebrate. Congratulations to you all on being selected as Living Legends and Legends in the Making.

For 25 years the Dr. Marion J. Brooks Living Legends Awards has carried my father's legacy of service with Excellency. A special thanks to Jim and Gloria Austin for founding and carrying the torch for this event with zeal and selflessness. I am overjoyed and filled with Alpha Pride that the Brothers of Beta Tau Lambda have embraced the challenge of leading this event.

This year's class is second to none. I am sure my father is looking down from heaven with great pride as the legacy he created for this great city is being championed by so many worthy servant leaders.

Advocacy and Service are the hallmarks of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the pillars that guided my father’s work and service in a city that he loved dearly. As we celebrate the accomplishments of our Living Legends and Legends in the Making, let us remember to hold close those same pillars that guided my father’s work. Let them be the fuel needed to serve the Ft. Worth and greater Tarrant County community with integrity, honor and excellence. It is my prayer that as we recognize the achievements of our community leaders we also continue to shine a light on the path that was paved by those who have come before us. We will endeavor to point the next generation I the direction that leads to significance and service to all mankind.

2018 LEGEND IN THE MAKING

Devan Allen As the Founder and Principal of Allen Realty Advisors (ARA), Devan is opening doors for those pursuing business investments or the dream of homeownership. But, growing up as the youngest child of incarcerated parents and having faced homelessness at a young age, Devan didn’t conceive that her own path would lead her to becoming an entrepreneur and an advocate for at-risk youth and women. At the heart of her successes is her core belief that success is attainable if one is willing to work diligently to achieve it.

Prior to launching ARA, Devan built a solid career in politics, serving as the District Director in both the Texas Senate and House, and most recently served as Campaign Manager for State Representative Chris Turner, chair of the House Democratic Caucus. Devan has also served Tarrant County as a Council Aide to a Fort Worth Mayor Pro Tem, and as Senior Director of External Affairs for the University of Texas at Arlington. Once headed for a career in the healthcare field, including serving as a nationally and state certified Emergency Medical Technician, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from UTA, including undergraduate coursework at Tarrant County College.

Known for her passion for public service, her diplomacy and a proven track record of connecting people and resources successfully, Devan has been tapped to serve on a number of boards and commissions and with a host of non-profit organizations including: Day Resource Center, Chair of the Arlington Community Relations Commission, inspirED Advisory Committee, New Leaders Council Advisory Board, Women Inspiring Philanthropy, and is a founding member of BRIDGE Young Professionals. In 2015, Fort Worth CEO Magazine named her one of “20 Women to Watch in Business.”

Devan resides in Arlington with her husband Mark Allen, a Commercial Real Estate Broker and Principal of Allen Multifamily Advisors. They enjoy traveling, attending sporting events, hiking, following cutting-edge developments in business and technology, and spending time with friends and family.

2018 LEGEND IN THE MAKING

Jeremiah Anderson Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Jeremiah Anderson grew up with a love for sports that earned him a Division I scholarship to play Men’s Volleyball at a small Franciscan school in Southwest Illinois, Quincy University (QU). After earning his Bachelor’s degree in political Science from QU he then went on to pursue a Master of Arts in Social Science from Southern University at Baton Rouge (SU), where he was also a graduate assistant for the Lady Jaguar Women’s Volleyball Program.

Jeremiah was then brought to Texas to help run the campaign for a candidate for the Texas Railroad Commission, holding two titles: Field Director and Deputy Campaign Manager. By the elections end, Anderson decided that North Texas was a fantastic market to settle into as a young professional and he accepted the position of Economic Development Manager for the Fort Worth Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce.

During his nearly 3-year stint with the Chamber, Anderson has worked tirelessly to expand the reach of the Chamber by bringing in new members, strengthening pre-existing relationship and forging new relationships by opening dialogue with new corporations and other potential partners about the direction of the Chamber under its new board leadership. Anderson is a thought leader within the organization and wears many hats at the Chamber including social media content curator and liaison for PATHS Forward, the Chambers’ leadership development program among other things.

In his spare time he coaches Volleyball for the Blocksport Volleyball Club, a select volleyball program in Dallas. He also is the Head Coach for the girls’ volleyball program at The Highlands School, a private Catholic school in Irving, Texas. Jeremiah is also the proud owner of a beautiful three-year old German-Shepherd, Bella Bean Anderson.

Dr. Kelley Mills Dr. Kelly Mills is currently the Assistant to the Chancellor Tarrant County College District.

Previously, Dr. Mills served as Trustee Relations Secretary at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R. I., where she was the main administrative liaison between the board of trustees and administration. Mills’ experience also includes serving as the associate chief of staff at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and as executive assistant to the provost of William Peace University in Raleigh, N.C. and as assistant the chancellor for budget and planning at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

She is a member of the board of directors for the National Association of Presidential Assistants in Higher Education and serves on the Board Professional Leadership Group at the Association of Governing Boards. Mills holds a doctorate in higher education leadership and policy from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in nonprofit management from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Bachelor of Arts in public policy analysis from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dante Williams Dante Williams is a Fort Worth native who enjoys the process of building America through construction and community involvement. He has worked in the construction industry on commercial projects for over a decade. Dante has served his community by being involved in youth sports as Head Coach for the Fort Worth Outlaws Track Club and founded a Men’s Bible Study, Worldwide Ministries. He is also the current President and cofounder of community Frontline, a non-profit organization based in the city of Fort Worth.

Dante is a proud alum of P.L. Dunbar High School Science and Engineering Program. While at Dunbar, he was part of the Wildcat Football, Track and Step Teams. He was also President of the Distinguished Gentleman. From there, he went on to obtain his degree in Construction Science at Prairie View A&M University. During his time at Prairie View, he pledged as member of the Zeta Beta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. where he held the positions of Vice President Polemarch and Step Team Captain.

In 2005, Dante joined Rogers-O’Brien Construction Company where he was part of several projects ranging from $10 to $50 million hospitals, office buildings, churches and mixed-use developments. In January 2015, Dante transitioned to SEDALCO located in Fort Worth, Texas where he was a Project Manager. This position allowed him to develop a deeper level of community involvement from the Outlaws Track Club to the creation of Community Frontline. Community Frontline is a brotherhood of men who love Fort Worth and who are committed to addressing and solving the problems that cause suffering to the beloved residents of the community. In October 2017, Dante began the next phase of his career as Senior Project Manager for Con-Real, a black-owned construction company.

He is currently working on the Texas! Live and Rangers Ballpark projects in Arlington, TX. Dante is the oldest son of Tina, proud husband of Francelia and equally proud father of Zoe, Naomi and Draya.

2018 LIVING LEGEND (LAW)

Attorney Mattie Compton Mattie Compton serves an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Fort Worth Division. Ms. Compton is a regular member of the Evaluation and Review Staff, Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys. She received the Director’s Award from Attorney General Janet Reno for superior performance as an Assistant United States Attorney in 1996. She also serves on the Board of Visitors at Texas Wesleyan University, and serves as Chair of the Harriet Tubman Scholarship at TCU. Also serves on the Board of Trustees at Smith College, in North Hampton, MA (her alma mater.) Attorney Compton completed her A.B. in Afro-American studies from Smith, College and earned her J.D. degree at the University of Michigan School of Law. She lives in Fort Worth, Texas, where she is active on the boards of a number of civic organizations including the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Zoological Association, Chaired the Legal Aid of Northwest Texas Board and Chaired the Tarrant County Bar Foundation Board.

2018 LIVING LEGEND (CIVIC SERVICE)

Deralyn Riles Davis Deralyn Riles Davis graduated from Butler College High School Department in 1949, at the age of fourteen as valedictorian. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in health, physical education, and recreation from Tillotson College in 1953. Mrs. Davis taught for the Fort Worth Independent School District from 1965 until 1975. In 1975, she resigned her teaching position to return to school. Mrs. Davis graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1978 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting. She then opened her own business in 1980, doing bookkeeping, income taxes, and financial statements, and selling real estate.

Deralyn is a lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., having pledged Alpha Nu Chapter in 1951, at sixteen years old. She has served as president of the Fort Worth Beta Mu Omega Chapter and chaired several committees. Mrs. Davis served as the fourteenth South Central regional director in 1974 and 1976. In 2011, an Educational Advancement Fund scholarship was endowed in her name.

Mrs. Davis’ political career is legendary in the state of Texas. Governor Mark White appointed her to the Texas Board of Corrections, the first woman appointed to the Board. She worked for the 2000 Census as an assistant crew leader and is still an active member of the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats. In 2017, the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats created the Deralyn Davis ‘Dare to Dream’ Award which will be awarded annually in her name.

Deralyn has received many accolades including: • 2013 - Representative Nicole Collier presented Texas Legislative Black Caucus Outstanding Texan Award • 2013 - Presented the Hazel Harvey Peace Business Woman of the Year • 2016 - Timeless Service Award, South Central Region, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. • 2016 - A W.A.VE. Community Leader Award She married her hometown beau, Jefferson Davis Jr., on August 25, 1956. They have one daughter, Jefflyn Dorsai, and a son, Jock Kevin. They are the proud grandparents of two grandsons, Jefferson Davis III and Jordan Daniel Davis.

2018 LIVING LEGEND (MEDICINE)

Dr. Dwight Ruddock Dr. Ruddock has opened the doors to his practice in the heart of the Fort Worth community for the past 33 years. Having served as both President and a member of the Board of Directors of the Fort Worth District Dental Society, Dr. Ruddock clearly has the respect of his peers.

He has served as a volunteer for Trinity Habitat for Humanity, the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Salvation Army, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Fort Worth District Dental Society, the Fort Worth Jamaican Association and local church programs. He is a loyal supporter of the Fort Worth Tarrant County NAACP, the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Dr. Ruddock has been married to his college sweetheart, Nada Ruddock, for 36 years. They have a son, Tony, daughter-in-law, Molly and granddaughter, Fiona. In his spare time, Dr. Ruddock works in his vegetable garden and tends to his fruit trees.

Dr. Ruddock has received numerous awards through his years of service and continues to draw admiration from the community at large. This top doc and community servant has clearly reached Legendary status.

2018 LIVING LEGEND (RELIGION)

Pastor Ralph W. Emerson Reverend Ralph W. Emerson, Jr. was called to preach in June 1978 and was ordained in December 1979. He became the Assistant Pastor of Rising Star Baptist Church in 1989. After only one year, he was called to be the Senior Pastor in June 1990. In 2005, a ribbon cutting was held for a complete family life center which included a weight room, game room, gym, jogging track, aerobics are, performance stage, family lounge and chapel. Rev. Emerson has led the church from 200 members to approximately 3,000 at present. His preaching Ministry will reach 40 years in June 2018.

Rev. Emerson has four degrees including an Associate of Arts in Recreation Administration from Contra Costa College (1963), Bachelor of Arts in Recreation Administration from San Jose State University (1968), a Master of Public Administration from California State University-Hayward (1980), and a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary and Biola College (1982).

He has served on the Board of Directors for several organizations including the United Way, Aids Outreach, Red Cross, and the Food Bank. He currently serves as Chairperson for John Peter Smith Pastor’s Council and Healthy Moms-Healthy Babies- Healthy Community (H3), Board Chairman of John Peter Smith Board of Managers, and a member of the University of North Texas Health Science Center Dean Steering Committee.

Pastor Emerson worked for the cities of Compton, Houston, and Fort Worth. Prior to pastoring Rising Star, he was an active member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Los Angeles and New Faith Baptist Church in Houston where he led various ministries including young adults and youth, and marriage counseling and bible study respectively.

He has been married to Gladys Emerson, Vice President of Continuing Education at Tarrant County College-South Campus, for 35 years. They have been blessed with 3 children and 6 grandchildren.
