It Takes a Valley
We often talk about how it takes a village to raise a child. Well, it takes a Valley to create this magazine.
The majority of what you read in Fountain Valley Living begins with an email from one of our readers, or a conversation with someone at swim practice, school drop off, maybe the bank. We rely on story ideas from our friends, neighbors, and others in our community, so please keep them coming.
To create an issue, we discuss the submissions, review the calendar for upcoming events and work on getting photos to accompany the words since they paint a thousand. We try to write articles you’ll enjoy while getting tires at Southern Tire Mart, having your child’s braces adjusted by Dr. Nisco, waiting for a check-up at Edinger Medical Group or drinking coffee at home.
The support we receive from advertisers like these and others is essential to keeping Fountain Valley Living in print. There is no better visual than the two pallets of magazines it takes to deliver a free copy to every home and business in our city each month.

Please let our advertisers know you appreciate their support of our community by using their services and letting them know you saw them in Fountain Valley Living. And keep the story ideas coming.

Los Amigos High co-valedictorians both bound for UCLA
By MARLEY GREEN Fountain Valley Living MagazineZurisadai Aranda Azpeitia and Daniel Contreras, co-valedictorians at Los Amigos High School this year, are busier than most people.

Zurisadai plays on the Los Amigos softball team, is part of two campus service clubs, began her own fashion club this year and advocates for a more diverse curriculum at the district level through Latinos Unidos GGUSD.
Daniel is part of multiple campus service clubs and likes to give study and involvement advice to underclassmen.
Both plan to attend UCLA in the fall. Zurisadai intends to major in Latin American studies and education, with a plan of coming right back home.
“My goal is to come back to my community and teach at Garden Grove Unified just so that I’m able to relate to students or students are able to relate to me,” Zurisadai said.
She wants to guide students who grew up in the same area and culture she did throughout school, adding that her family is her main motivator.
“My sisters, they’re always there for me, and I try to be there for them, too,” Zurisadai said. “My mom is my main supporter. Whenever I share an idea with her, she’s always supporting me

and telling me to go for it.”
Daniel said earning valedictorian is a “culmination” of long study sessions and hard work. Long-term, he wants to work as a software engineer for a large tech company. For now, he is appreciating the time he has left.
“It’s really an honor to share [valedictorian] with Zuri, who I’ve been pretty close friends with throughout these last few years,” Daniel said. “I’m just really happy that we both get to share this experience.”

out of one’s comfort zone and getting involved. The clubs he joined in high school taught him skills in people-building and team-building, and the value of being inclusive.
“If your friend is not joining a club that you want to join, just join it, because you’re going to meet new people with shared interests, and you’re going to build everlasting bonds and create lasting memories with those people,” Daniel said.
Whatever these two encounter next at UCLA, it is sure to help them shine.

With family memories in tow, she moves on with plenty to celebrate
By SUSAN SAURASTRI Seven Gables Real Estateast month, I wrote about Marianne Gentry whose beloved husband of 60 years passed away in February 2022.
Marianne wrestled with the decision of whether to stay put in their Villa Monterey tract home, behind Fountain Valley Library, or start a new chapter with her contemporaries in assisted living. She decided to sell.

Her single-family home offers four bedrooms, an office and a pool. It has 2,124 square feet of living space on a 7,000-squarefoot lot. The house backs to the 405 freeway off ramp.
Marianne was, to put it kindly, a collector. Visualize floor-to-ceiling cherished artifacts, such as Cabbage Patch Dolls, costume jewelry, containers and boxes, whose contents were long forgotten, but whose memories still held a place in Marianne’s big heart.
If she sold her home in “as is” condition without doing the drywall repairs, the pool deck resurfacing, scraping the ceilings, painting throughout, or reglazing the bathrooms and kitchen, she could have sold it for $950,000.
Marianne’s nephew, Steven, and her sister Debbie helped her pack up her must-haves and loaded up the car. With a backwards glance, the memories of love shared and expressed by
her husband and three sons will now travel with her.
She hired me and my friend and Realtor associate, Nick White. We obtained numerous estimates for repairs. Marianne’s family members pooled their resources and with $25,000 in estimates, the vendors went to work.
Four weeks later, Marianne stepped through the door and stood motionless, eyes wide, and hand over her mouth. When she could speak, all she could utter was one word: “Wow!”
The list price was $1,169,000. More than 75 prospective homebuyers toured the open house on Saturday, April 22. Don’t believe the media when you hear the housing market is cooling. It definitely doesn’t apply to Fountain Valley— with Susan and Nick on your side.

Five days from the launch date, we reviewed six offers to purchase and issued three counter offers to the highest bidders. The home is scheduled to close escrow on May 30 for $1,260,000.
If mathematics is not your strong suit, that’s $91,000 over the list price.
Marianne had much to celebrate when she turned 80 on May 6. It was with the knowledge that her beloved husband Marvin would be proud of her. Her sizable mortgage is being paid off through escrow and she’ll have a nice nest egg to enjoy her next chapter.
As her granddaughter, Sarah, predicted, “It’s time for my Mimi to spread her wings and fly.”

Going gold
FV moms continue quest to bring awareness about childhood cancer.
By MINNIE DAO Fountain Valley Living MagazineFountain Valley School District campuses were decked in shades of gold for a day in February to support International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day as they hosted their annual “Going Gold” event.
Students and staff adorned themselves in gold or yellow and brought a dollar to donate to the cause.
Fountain Valley moms Jamie Ankeny and Jackie Kap created the “Going Gold” event to bring awareness and raise financial assistance for families whose children are undergoing the battle against childhood cancer.
Both moms’ sons have fought through cancer. Jamie’s son, Carter, passed away two years into his battle
against acute lymphoblastic leukemia— one of the most common and studied forms of childhood cancer—from the side effects of chemotherapy treatment.
The two mothers have dedicated their lives to funding childhood cancer research and treatment.
In addition to the support they have received from students and families in the Fountain Valley School District, they have gained additional community support in their efforts. Since the beginning of “Going Gold,” First Class Pizza of Fountain Valley has donated 5 percent of its total sales for the day to the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.
“First Class Pizza is honored to support PCRF,” said owner Lisa Sasaki. “We are truly privileged to know and work with some of these very special children and their families.”
On the same day, 9 Round Fitness in Fountain Valley staged a fundraiser, encouraging attendees to donate a penny for every calorie burned. Several local Starbucks stores have also “gone gold” with balloons, streamers and donation jars to spread awareness.

Alone, the FVSD has collected more than $32,000 over the last five years, but combined with the community’s support, the event has generated more than $34,500 for the foundation.
“The impact that this has is enough funds to enroll one child in a clinical trial in addition to more than 190 hours of research for childhood cancer treatments,” Ankeny said.
ABOUT: International Childhood Cancer Day is a global campaign to raise awareness about childhood cancer, and to express support for children and adolescents with cancer, the survivors and their families.

Estimated Tax Payments

Estimated tax is the method used to pay tax on income not subject to withholding, such as income from self-employment, interest, dividends, alimony and rent and gains from the sale of assets, prizes and awards. You also may have to pay an estimated tax if the income tax being withheld from your salary, pension or other income is insufficient.
When figuring out your estimated tax for the current year, it may be helpful to use your income, deductions and credits for the prior year as a starting point. Use your prior year's federal tax return as a guide and use the worksheet in Form 1040-ES to figure your estimated tax. However, you must adjust to any changes in your situation as well as recent tax law changes.

Estimated Tax Due Dates

For estimated tax purposes, the year is divided into four payment periods, each with a specific payment due date. For the 2023 tax year, these dates are April 18, June 15, Sept. 15, and Jan. 16, 2024.

Call us to make an appointment to discuss your specific taxes: (714) 848-9158. You also can read about various tax topics on our website: aaccettacpa.com.

With so many great reads out there, I love to give input to parents about what has been “hot” in the library this year: For kindergarten: You can’t go wrong with the Pig the Pug series by Aaron Blabey or the Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast series by Josh Funk. Those books are constantly checked out by my kindergarten classes, and honestly all grade levels love them!

These are all fiction books. However, students also love the non-fiction genre as well. National Geographic books are great for all ages, and for second grade and up I highly recommend the “Who Is? Who Was? Where Is?” series by multiple authors. These books are a great way to get your child to love non-fiction with a fiction feel.

One of the best parts of my job as an elementary school librarian is seeing kids light up at the books in the library, and hearing of new series that they come across over the summer. I always look forward to the fall when students return, and we hear all the places they have gone with reading!
