2018 started with a bang in Haywood County.

Since ringing in the New Year, law enforcement officers have responded to four shooting incidents in a week, including a fifth incident days before.

The first call came on Dec. 23 from a girl in Canton who said she witnessed a man get shot several times by John Williamson. Williamson, was released from jail on firearm charges just before Christmas and was out on bail when he allegedly shot Matthew Walker in a drive by shooting.

enforcement about a shooting on Happy Way in Canton.

An assisting K-9 officer from Waynesville Police Department was enroute to the scene when he encountered a vehicle flipped on its side along US 276 and a truck with multiple bullet holes in the windshield. The driver told police he chased the shooters away from the scene at Happy Way as the suspects fired rounds into his truck. After the suspect vehicle flipped, he said, three individuals fled on foot.

Waynesville Police Department’s K-9 Arco was put on the chase and two suspects were apprehended about a mile away.

Williamson, who was wanted since the shooting on Dec. 23, was taken into custody, along with Brittany Moore, 31, who had to be treated for dog bite wounds to her arm. Police are still searching for a third suspect, Nathaniel Shane Davis, 23.

Just two days later, Waynesville police responded to three additional calls about shots being fired. First, three suspects (including Griggs and Bartucca, pictured above) were taken into custody, accused of exchanging gunfire in a drug deal turned armed robbery on Stucco Lane in the area of Chestnut Park.

Frazier Street said a man was firing shots and walking toward McDonald’s. Officers located a 28-year-old man in the restaurant parking lot, with a shotgun.

The man made false, bizarre claims about murder and family members suggested to police that he may have been high on a drug known as flakka. He was committed for drug treatment.

Later that same night police arrested Rustin Brown (pictured above) in reference to being intoxicated and firing a gun aimlessly near Brook Street.

In all five shootings, only one victim was shot.
