SUCCESS STORY
Turning life around
Vilashni Nair is a self-described survivor. She is learning at Future Skills Academy to help others turn their lives aroundlike she did. “In 2019, I was in respite care after a complete mental breakdown and a suicide attempt that saw me admitted to Auckland Hospital,” Vilashni says. “Today I feel I got another chance at life and the starting point was being accepted to study at Future Skills Academy.”
Vilashni was born in Fiji where she studied medicine. In 1994, she moved to New Zealand before getting involved in property development. She owned and managed a rest home along with a boarding house. Soon after, she became a single parent and started studying mental health through distance learning.
“My own mental health deteriorated and I spent time either in respite care, in hospital or huddled under duvet covers at home,” she says. “My only reason to keep going on in life was my two boys.” But Vilashni persevered to study beauty therapy and open her own spa, which she ran for five years.
Life took a nasty turn again and she found herself forced to sell the business. She focussed on her sons who were preparing for university and after a year’s break changed careers to become an international flight attendant. While she delighted in flying, Vilashni reveals there was still a void inside her to finish the mental health studies.
April 4, 2020 marked “the darkest day in the life of a lot of flight attendants,” she says. The airline announced it was shutting down its New Zealand base due to border closures triggered by the global Covid-19 pandemic. “Suddenly I was without a job or a career. I had the choice of either to sink into depression or to get up and seek a brand new career again.”
Vilashni then turned to the Mental Health and Addiction Support Level 4 programme at our Manukau campus. “Last year was the hardest year but it was through the great staff and peers at Future Skills Academy that I was able to do my course,” she says. “I love the fact that I had so much support all around me at campus. Even the managers are always available and just a phone call or a knock away.”
Future Skills Academy rekindled a love of learning which inspired her to study to become a Peer Support Specialist. Vilashni has also enrolled in a Te Reo Māori course and and a Bachelor of Health Science.
SUCCESS STORY
Graduate on track to become nurse practitioner
Miriama Hei Hei is celebrating a milestone after graduating from one of our health programmes. But her academic journey does not end there. The mother of four has earned the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support), Level 4 at Future Skills Academy.
She is now on track to become a nurse practitioner, studying the Bachelor of Nursing Māori degree (Te Tohu Paetahi Tikanga Rangatira aa-Tapuhi) at the Manukau Institute of Technology. While forging ahead with the three-year degree, she will keep nurturing people as a healthcare worker at Papakura Private Hospital. Of Māori descent, Miriama says she yearns to become a nurse to help her Māori whānau, hapū and iwi. “I also want to care for our people here in New Zealand with the health and support they require. He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata he tangata he tangata. (What is the most important thing in the world? It is the people, the people, the people).” She advises others to never give up and to strive towards their goals.
The Manurewa resident says she chose Future Skills Academy because it was close to home and held strong family ties. Her cousin Sonny Kahika used to be a tutor at the academy and her son Te Reihaina Teihi Hei Hei earlier completed a life skills youth programme at our Manukau campus. “I was happy with all the support he was given throughout his course and the tutors were so helpful,” she says.
Miriama launched her career path studying Māori arts and crafts and Māori Performing Arts at the Pounamu Training Systems in Papatoetoe. She became a mum at the age of 19 and worked in a Kohanga Reo Kaiawhina at Te Kohanga Reo O Nga Puawai O Wikitoria in Papakura for two years. Driven by a desire to help people, she became a community support worker with Health Vision, caring for people with different disabilities. “As the years went on, I had four beautiful children by 2007. I had such a supportive husband who was there to support me in many ways.” Miriama went on to work for a variety of healthcare agencies and Papakura Private Hospital.

Felicia Fel designed an application to help people spot an online scam, during her Software Development progamme with Future Skills.
Felicia has just completed the first programme in our new suite of Software Development Microcredentials, which allow learners to build apps and gain real-world coding experience.
Felicia came into the qualification with a background in Digital Design. She has worked as a Visual Designer for the past three years. She says she loved the practicality of the programme and the hands-on nature of the lessons.
“The course was very practical, and the lessons are taught in an interactive way. We get to learn by actually making things work instead of just watching lectures.”
As part of her programme, Felicia worked on a web application all about educating people about online scams.
Her app is called Airscammer, and it allows users to browse a fictitious flight booking website and click on things that look suspicious. Felicia hopes to work as a front-end developer in the future and continue expanding on her software development knowledge.

Hairdresser reinvents herself as building consent officer
Tania Leach has switched the hair cutting shears for the Building Code. The former hairdresser has hung up her apron to review building consents at the Thames-Coromandel District Council.
“The building career path is one I never considered an option when I was at high school,” the building consent processing officer says. “Generally when you say building, you typically think of hammers, nails and blokes.” But Tania is on top of the world in her new career which she juggles with studying the NZ Diploma in Building Surveying (In employment) Level 6. “I thoroughly enjoy my job and love the constant learnings associated with the Building Act and Code.” She welcomes the professional development opportunities stretching ahead. “Hopefully that involves Level 7 with Future Skills Academy.”
Tania, 30, hails from a background in hospitality, hairdressing and working as a ground crew team leader for Qantas in Perth, Western Australia. After returning to New Zealand and starting a family, “I realised hairdressing was no longer a passion that would work in with family commitments,” the mother of three says.
Tania went on to become a vetting officer in the building administration team of the Thames Coromandel District Council. This sparked a fascination for the industry. “I developed a thirst for knowledge to understand the legislative requirements and reasons behind the tasks of my role.”
She seized the opportunity for a building consent processor cadetship. Tania then enrolled in our diploma because it aligned with the Regulation 18 and cadetship requirements of the BCA Accreditation Scheme for Building Consent Authorities. A highlight has been sharing the two-year learning journey with cohort colleagues performing similar roles, she says. “They have brought a variety of personal experiences that contribute to learning take-aways and create industry contacts which go beyond the course environment.”

Romance entices Scottish woman to NZ building industry
Falling in love compelled Hazel Thelin to travel 18,390 km across the world to New Zealand. It also led to a career change for the former environmental scientist, now a Building Consent Processor. She studied the two-year NZ Diploma in Building Surveying (In Employment), while working at Tasman District Council.
Scotland-born Hazel settled in Nelson 18 years ago after meeting the love of her life, “a Kiwi bloke” at the London engineering firm where she worked. “I basically got swept off my feet and left half a world behind me - my home, family, friends and career,” she says.
“My first job in Nelson was draughting because I knew how to use draughting software and had a can-do attitude.” Hazel drew a large battleship marine fitout, ships systems, structures and even the engines.
She became a mother of two and launched part time engineering draughting support. She volunteered frequently as a parent helper until two years ago “when the lovely Dawn Rosie and Matt Feely hired me full-time as a Building Consent Processor.” As part of her contract, Hazel agreed to undertake regulation 18 diploma course training. So she turned to Future Skills Academy. “I have learned so much and have been given so much support and encouragement in training subsidised by the government due to the skill shortage.”
The programme has given a good grounding in building laws, regulations and compliance pathways, she says. Hazel relished learning about processing commercial buildings, going on inspections and gaining knowledge about fire compliance pathways. She is thriving in the building industry where she says everyone is down to earth. “I feel sorry for my colleagues as I’m not your typical BTO processor type, and with my accent there aren’t many straight faces listening to me every day!”

Graduate writes new career path
Julie Gu is celebrating a milestone after graduating from the English, Maths and Digital Skills programme. But her academic journey at Royal Oak campus does not stop there.
The solo mother is now forging ahead with the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) (Level 4) with a strand in Mental Health and Addiction Support.
Julie, 43, says she is studying diligently to set a good example for her sons, aged seven and 10. “My boys are the reason and motivation for me to work hard.”
The Chinese student is also driven to give back to those who helped her in New Zealand and to achieve financial independence as soon as possible.
One of Julie’s support workers recommended studying at Future Skills Academy because the programme was free, she says. “Royal Oak campus is a very lovely place, making me feel right at home.”
She opted to study English, Maths and Digital Skills to prepare for a goal to learn about mental health. “In the beginning, I was not sure if I could cope with Level 4, so I entered Pary’s class to test my learning ability. I am very grateful to Pary who affirmed my efforts and believed that I would be able to finish my studies successfully. I was fortunate to have a good start in the class where I strengthened my confidence to take on the challenge of more difficult studies.”
Julie is relishing learning about mental health, a field she yearns to work in. “I respect this profession, their value for society and people.”

Flourishing at Future Skills
Adriana Tuscia admits public speaking makes her feel sick to the stomach. But that hasn’t stopped her from leading the Student Council at Future Skills Academy.
The new chairperson is studying the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Mental Health and Addiction Support Work) Level 4 at Royal Oak. “I am terrified of public speaking, and I quietly thought that maybe becoming a class student representative might be good for me to get in a little practice,” she says. When asked to introduce visitors at events, Adriana was forced to face her fears. “I just had to pretend I was someone else acting on my behalf.” Knowing some of her classmates and being surrounded by nice people also helps to ease the stage fright, she says.
When elected chairperson, “you could have knocked me over,” she says. “I have had staff, but I have never done anything like this.” However she is blossoming in the campus environment. Adriana, a fellow student, and tutor Dushmanta have been contemplating running nutrition workshops to support the academy’s healthy
eating days, she says. “I haven’t ever taught anything but thankfully the lockdown has given us a bit more time to get some stuff together. I was also thinking about finding out what the students thought may be important to learn as we go through our work placements.” The chairperson, who has a personal interest in Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, advocates more teaching about childhood trauma. “A lot of overseas research is pointing to its relevance in catching the early signs in children, how we take it into our adult life, coping with the hidden, often unconscious wounds that can have such negative impacts on our responses and actions.”
Adriana, 59, says she loved the campus as soon as she walked in with its orange walls, traditional decorations, welcoming and warm staff. But the ethnic inclusiveness impressed her the most. “The shared lunches leave us all astounded with the sheer diversity of food, racing to share recipes, learning special dances and generally hanging out for the next one!”

Enrolment terms & conditions
Domestic fee-paying students
FEES
Confirmation of enrolment will be provided in the form of an invoice. If you are paying your fees privately, i.e. not through a student loan, payment is due within 14 days of the date of the invoice and NO LATER than the start date of the courses enrolled. If you are applying for a student loan through StudyLink, we expect you to complete your application as soon as possible and NO LATER than the start date. Any student who wishes to dispute the fees due must do so within seven (7) working days of receiving the invoice. A request to review the fees or account balance must be made within this period, in writing to the Director of Domestic Operations, Future Skills Academy. At the discretion of Future Skills Academy, and with just cause, this period may be extended. Once the request is received, the review will be completed within seven (7) working days. Once the review is completed, any outstanding balance is due immediately. Failure to pay any invoice(s) by the due date means you will then be liable for all costs and expenses (including legal costs, debt collection agent fees, and this may affect your credit rating) which may be incurred in the recovery or attempted recovery of the overdue amount from you. Under these circumstances Future Skills Academy may give to, or obtain from, any relevant third party, information held about your personal or commercial credit arrangements. Academic results for a student will be withheld for any programme where fees or any other debt remains unpaid. A student will be prevented from graduating or receiving their award(s) until their debt has been paid in full. The student will also be prevented from re-enrolling in further courses of study.
TRANSFERS
Transfers are negotiated with the Programme Manager or Director of Domestic Operations. There are no penalties; however, there may be additional fees required or a refund may be due. If you want to leave your programme you must formally withdraw by filling out a Student Withdrawal Request Form FS045b, available from and returnable to Student Services.
