From The Editor's Desk Astrology and Rains Rains are very much essential for human life. It is much more important for a country like India whose economy depends on agriculture and agriculture depends on rain. Billions and billions are spent to know the quantity of rain fall in advance to plan the future. It may be very useful for a farmer to decide when and which crop to sow to get the best yields. Animals, birds and insects are believed to have much better instinct to know the nature. They come to know about the weather much in advance which even the sophisticated instruments tail to perceive. They build up their home and make arrangements for their food accordingly. In Astrology also there are various algorithms suggested to know the rain fall. A detailed method is listed inside. There are various limitations of the traditional method of rain forecasting: 1. Many techniques are provided. We do not know which is more appropriate in application. A single technique fails completely if applied over the years. 2. These techniques can not describe the quantum of result eg. rain in cms. in an area. 3. Techniques fail if we apply it on a day to day basis, though it may give tend over a long period. Even the trend provided does not guarantee accuracy. 4. Most of the planetary effects are common to any place in the world, some are common to one zone. Thus it is not possible to forecast the weather for specific areas by ancient methods. To overcome the above problems, modern mathematical techniques are applied to understand the effect of Planets on rains/weather. It is the gravitational effect of planets which is causing the movement of earth around its axis and around the sun. The entire solar system or every member of the galaxy follows the gravitational law sincerely. To know the impact of planets on rains mathematically, the procedure can be followed as follows : 1. Take daily data of rain for the last few years and preferably 60 years, if possible. More data will give wider accuracy. 2. Relate it to the planetary movement. 3. Also relate the rainfall to angles between the planets to consider aspects. 4. Shodash varga considerations can also be considered. In fact, these give good result. After knowing the above effects these can be applied to planet degrees in future to give the final results. AIFAS Research Journal of Astrology l Jul-Sep 2005

The main problem remains how to relate data to planet degrees & find the relation. The procedure is as follows : 1. In statistics correlation coefficients are defined to know if there is any correlation between the two data. Correlation between planet degree and rain confirms that particular planet has an impact on rain. 2. There is the method of Regression analyses to find any polynomial relationship. 3. Fourier method is best suited to correlate harmonic motions. Planets move in harmonic motions and can be best expressed by trigonometric functions Sine or Cos. Their correlations with rain or any other planetary phenomenon can be best determined using Fourier transforms or any other method using harmonic motion as base. Knowing the factor of multiplication to the sine or cosine of the planet degree, values can be computed for any date in future. There are various advantages of the Astro-mathematics applied to planetary movement to forecast any event like rain or share market. Major advantages are : 1. Astro-mathematics can be applied and propagated to any thing which depends upon planetary effects. The values can be computed in numbers relevant to that problem. 2. The results can be transformed into statements like : -

Sun/Moon have maximum impact on rain.

-

Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu do not have direct impact on rains much.

-

Retrogression of planets does not have any impact on rains.

3. For different stations, different formulas can be generated to give accurate predictions. This thing had been totally missing in traditional astrology. 4. Data is required for every station separately. However graphs can be drawn to understand which planet is affecting which area to what extent. 5. With good mathematical models predictions can be made quite accurately for a very long future. However, mathematical models do not tally with the astrological formulas given in texts. To sum up the planets have a lot of information hidden in themselves. This can definitely be unearthed for long term planning. This information can be used for the benefit of mankind. The science of planetary movement and their impact on this earth called Astrology- should be given a more serious attention than merely knowing a good muhurtha for marriage or match making. It can be utilized to predict the events with greater accuracy in a long future with No Data Capturing. Because earthquakes are due to gravitation's push & pulls, astrology can also definitely be used to predict earthquakes which is yet a mystery for modern science. Astrology should be given a due seat in the process of learning at universities & should be made useful to mankind by modern researches so that India i once again a proud leader of its ancient science-Astrology.

From The Desk of Managing Editor Mundane astrology We have discussed about Solar and Lunar Eclipses in our last issue and started about different houses in the mundane map. Starting with the first house, we shall discuss about the specific planets placed there. Sun : Sun in the first house, well aspected denotes a prosperous time of the country, many benefits to the people, improvement in all the affairs, and success in general. If afflicted it may create disturbances between matter and men and afflicts the health of people. Moon : The moon in the first house well aspected denotes activity and changes among the people, some improvements to women and children, and slight benefits to public. If afflicted will cause illness, unrest and discontent. Mars : This planet is generally evil, brings discontent among the people, strikes, riots, fires, Crime and ill health among people are generally noticed. If well aspected, it shows military activity, a war like tone among the people, and generally a forceful and aggressive tendency. Mercury : The planet when well aspected produces much activity, Increase of trade and new enterprises among the people, general inclination to study and intellectual activity in the community are noticed. If afflicted it shows much discontent, personal attacks, libel actions and recrimination in the popular press. Jupiter : Jupiter in first house is one of the most favourable significations. It brings prosperity and success in the land, plenty of work, good for trade, and brings numerous benefits to the community at large. If afflicted, it will affect the interests of the people according to the position of the afflicting planet or planets. Thus if the affliction came from the seventh house, it would disturb the peace of the country, if from tenth house through the government etc. Venus : If well aspected, denotes a peaceful time, satisfaction and success in the country, improvement of work connected with female sex. If badly aspected or afflicted, it shows misery and trouble to the feminine part of the community and indicates crime against women and children. Saturn : Placement of Saturn in first house should be considered as very evil, until and unless this planet is favourably aspected, it produces much distress, discontent, want of work, loss of trade, poverty, and general ill health. If well aspected, it will produce a steady progressive attitude among the people, more earnestness and perseverance but it rarely produces good. After understanding about the first house and the placement of planets there in, we shall now look in to second house. AIFAS Research Journal of Astrology l Jul-Sep 2005

The second house of the mundane chart has special reference to the financial condition of the nation, the revenue, national exchequer, stock exchange, banks, commerce and trade. At the time of Sun's entry into Aries, it affects the budget in parliament. Any planet that may be in the hose or the planet which rules the sign on the cusp of the house, whether a malefic or benefic is the significator of the national wealth for the period of time ruled by the planet. If the ruler of the second house be there in exalted or in the own sign, well placed and aspected, then the period will be favourable for the nation's wealth. If a malefic be there in, then the period will be unsatisfactory. The lunation falling in the second house depends upon the aspects, there too it will produce changes in financial affairs. If well aspected, shows increased revenue, improvement in the national exchequer, and a more prosperous time for stocks and shares specially for securities, if badly aspected it will cause heavy national expenditure, financial and bank failures and losses on the stock exchange. Let us now look in to the effects of various planets placed in second house. Sun : Sun in second house, well aspected is favourable for the revenue, denoting increase of receipts and a brighter outlook generally for the money market. If afflicted, it denotes great waste of public revenue, increase of taxation and heavy expenditure. Moon : Moon in the second house shows great fluctuation in the revenue and on the money market, in stocks and shares, but if well aspected shows an increase of receipts in the exchequer and improvement in the financial condition of the country. Mars : Mars in the second house shows losses on the stock exchange, panics, bank failures, and reduction in national revenue, denotes enormous expenditure and waste of public money. Military affairs will require large amounts of money and the revenue will be seriously affected in all ways. Mercury : Mercury in the second house denotes changes in financial affairs and if well placed and aspected, gains in trade and commerce, benefits to the revenue etc are likely. If badly aspected, it shows losses through fraud and theft and a good deal of black money in the money market. Jupiter : Jupiter i the second house is considered to be very much favourable. He will have best influence on national finances. Denotes a large increase of receipts, success in banking and commercial operations, may denote lessening of taxation. If afflicted, it shows heavy expenditure, bank failures and panics on the sock exchange. One of the worst aspects to Jupiter is a square or opposition of mars especially in financial affairs. Venus : Venus in the second house shows increase in receipts and if well aspected, will denote many benefits to the nation, regarding finances. If badly aspected, it denotes heavy losses, waste of national finances and is bad for banks and commercial affairs. Saturn : Saturn in the second house always gives bad results, like poor revenue, decrease of receipts, financial stagnation, depression in securities and financial affairs, and in general there will be a want in all financial activities and money matters. If afflicted, it will make the evil much greater and cause heavy depreciation of securities, but by any means Saturn gets benefic aspects or benefic relation, then it gives a steady tone to the money market. We shall look in to the matters of Third and Fourth houses in our next issue.

Astrology and Rains in 2005 Arun Kumar Bansal

T

o predict rains in astrology we consider the following points :

1. Samvatsar 2. King of Samvatsar 3. Meghesh - Minister of Rains of the Samvatsar 4. Entry of Sun in Ardra constellation 5. Megh (Cloud) of the year 6. Rohini Vas 7. Stambh 8. Naag 9. Trinadi Chakra 10. Saptanadi Chakra 11. Koorma Chakra 12. Nakshatra Sankhya Bodhak Chakra 13. Varsha Avarodhak Chakra 14. Planetary Transits 1. Samvatsar : Every year is assigned a name and a lord. For the year 2005-06 that is samvat 2062, the name of samvatsar is Vilamb whose lord is Sun. This gives lesser rains in Jyeshtha/ Aashad and more rains in Shravana, i.e. rains are delayed. It also gives excessive rains in Bhadrapad, giving rise in prices in the months of Aashvin and Kartik. Note : Samvatsar is valid for the entire world. 2. King of Samvatsar : The day lord when the samvatsar starts becomes the King of samvatsar. The king of samvatsar 2062 is Saturn. This gives excessive rains at some places and scanty rains at other places. Note : Most of the world has one king of the samvatsar & hence the above results are same.

The day lord when Sun enters into Ardra is called Meghesh, the lord of rains. This year the lord is Mars who by nature gives uneven distribution of rains and a low average. Note :Meghesh is same for the most parts of the world. 4. Entry of Sun in Ardra : The most important event to determine the rains is Sun's entry time in Ardra constellation. This year Sun enters into Ardra on 22nd June in the morning at 03.19 a.m. in India. At this time the horoscope is as shown: Ardra Pravesh Horoscope 22.6.2005, 03:19 hrs. Su Me Ve Sa 4

The ascendant is rising in Taurus which is basically an Earthy sign containing 50% water. The day is Tuesday, Full Moon, Mool nakshatra, Shukla yog and Sagittarius sign. In nutshell, the horoscope is not much favourable for rains this year. It indicates delays and a little less than normal rains. Note :The ardra pravesh horoscope is different for different parts of the world but GMT time of Sun’s entry into Ardra and planetary AIFAS Research Journal of Astrology l Jul-Sep 2005

a configuration remain the same for the entire world. 5. Megh (Cloud) of the Year : There are 9 kinds of clouds - Aavart, Sanvart, Pushkar, Drona, Kaal, Neel, Varun, Vayu and Vega. For every samvatsar one megh is assigned. This year megh is Vayu indicating scanty rains. There will be winds taking away the clouds. Note :Megh is common for the entire world. 6. Rohini Vas : Nakshatra at the time of Sun's entry into Aries are sequentially placed with 2 at sea, 2 at the shore, 1 at mountains and 2 at junctions. The placement of Rohini nakshatra out of the 4 places determines the rains during the considered year. This year Rohini falls at the junction point indicating uneven distribution of rains. Note :Rohini Vas is common for the entire world.

Sunughna, Nandsari, Karkotak, Prithushrav, Vasuki, Takshak, Kambal, Ashvatar, Hemmali, Narendra, Vajradranshtra, Vrish. This year ruling naag is Hemmali which gives enough rains throughout the year. Note :Naag is same for the entire world. 9. Trinadi Chakra : Trinadi chakra contains 3 nadis - called 1. Heaven (Swarg) 2. Earth (Prithvi) 3. Hell (Pataal) Planets move from one nadi to other nadi depending upon the nakshatra they are placed in. More planets in Swarg nadi give more rains. Malefic planets in Swarg nadi give heavy rains. Malefic planets in Pataal nadi give scanty rains. This year nadi chakra indicates enough rains for the world. Note :Trinadi chakra is same for the entire world.

7. Stambh : There are 4 stambhas. This year Jal stambh is 37%. Trin stambh is 21%. Vayu stambh is 92%, and Anna stambh is 97%. The % of Jal stambh (37%) is less which may give less rains.

10. Saptanadi Chakra : There are 7 nadis called Chanda, Vayu, Dahan, Saumya, Neera, Jala and Amrita. The planets are placed in one of the nadis according to the nakshatra they are residing. This year the saptanadi chakra indicates good rainfall.

Note :The % of stambhas varies depending on the place of consideration.

Note : Saptanadi chakra is same for entire world.

8. Naag : There are 12 kinds of Naags.

12. Nakshatra Sankhya Bodhak Chakra

Summary

The 27 nakshatras are divided into Sun and Moon nakshatras. Similarly they are divided into male, female and neutral nakshatras. Placement of planets in Sun and Moon nakshatras both give rains and similarly planets placed in Male and Female nakshatras give good rains. This year Saturn will be in Pushya which belongs to Moon and is a female nakshatra. Jupiter will be in Chitra which belongs to Sun and is female. Rahu is in Revati which belongs to Moon and is male. Ketu will also be in Chitra (Sun, Female), Mars will remain in a male nakshatra. Overall there is good mixing of Sun and Moon, male and female nakshatras that indicates good rains.

•

All the above considerations give indications that there will be normal to below normal rainfall in most of the states of India, whereas there may be floods in some Eastern and Southern parts. Rains will not be equally distributed and total average in total country will be less than normal.

•

Most (12 out of 14) of the considerations are valid for the entire world. Hence the above predictions remain valid for the world. Since it is not possible that the rainfall is similar in all locations, it is difficult to predict the rains areawise exactly using astrological formulae. r

Note :This is common for the entire world. 13. Varsha Avarodhak Chakra Sun remains in Rohini for 13 days. Rains during one of these 13 days deny further rains for a specified number of days. This year in India the rains were not there during these days and this indicates rains without any delay. Wherever the rains occurred on the above such dates, there may be a delay in rains. Note :The results are dependent upon the happening of rains at various places during Sun’s transit on Rohini 14. Planetary Transits The major transits which should be considered for rains are of Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Mars. This year Saturn is in Cancer in Pushya nakshatra, Jupiter shall be in Hast and Chitra in Virgo/Libra signs, Rahu is in Revati in Pisces, Mars shall pass through Revati, Ashwani, Bharani, Krithika and remains in Aries for over 5 months. The above transits indicate medium rainfall. Note :Transits are valid for the entire world. AIFAS Research Journal of Astrology l Jul-Sep 2005

Mundane Astrology

a

Astro-Meteorology Dr. Amar Aggarwal, Chandigarh Chapter

O

ne of the most important branches of Astrology is Mundane Astrology and AstroMeteorology is one of the most important and integral part of Mundane Astrology. Our Sages and Seers have indicated that rains are the veins of the harvest and the harvest is the basis of the economy of the country, hence predicting rains on the basis of Astrology is Astro-Meteorology. The basis of most essential rules / aphorisms of Vedic Astrology relevant to Astro- Meteorology are dealt here.

1. Similarly in the same month, Jyeshtha, observe the days when the Moon transits through Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha and Jyeshtha Nakshatras:

Most sensitive point is to pinpoint or locate the region of showers and this is very tough to assess due to non-availability of charts of each and every region. Hence this paper is in general considering New Delhi, the capital of India, as a whole.

• A wet Jyeshtha is an indication of a rainless Kartika.

1. In the month of Jyeshtha Shukla the tithis 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th hold a very important key in assessing the rain fall. One has to watch these four tithis very carefully for making any prediction regarding future rainfalls. In the year 2005 these tithis fall on 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th of June respectively. On these tithis smooth and cozy winds and the sky with clouds is a favourable indication of rains in the coming months. On the other hand if there is little showers during these days of the month, it will deprive the coming months from a good quantity of rains. Varahamihira endorses the above said view as under:

• A little shower on Vishakha days will render Bhadrapad without rain. • Wet Anuradha days are indicative of no rain during Asauj.

The Moon during this month will transit through these stars approximately around 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th of June 2005. • These four Nakshatras without showers during Jyeshtha ensure a good amount of rains during the coming months. Sage Kashyap says in this regard:

LokrkS rq Jko.ka gU;kn~ o`"Vs;s·nzkfXunSorsA Hkknzins Roo`f"V% L;kUeS=s pkjo;ts Le`rkAA ,sUnzs rq dkfrZds Rosoa o`"Vs o`f"Va fugfUr pA ,rs"kq ;fn uks o`f"VLrnk lkSfHk{ky{k.ke~AA

e`nq’kqHkiouk% 'kLrk% fLuX/k/kuLFkxfr xxuk’kpA

Means : During the Moon in Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha and Jyeshtha in the solar month of Jyeshtha having a wet sky during these days will render the months from Sharvana to Kartika dry and without rain in case these days remain dry and without any rain confirm heavy rains in the above said months.

Means: Smooth, soft and cozy winds giving relief to human body and the sky full of clouds is an indication of sufficient rains in the coming months.

2. At the end of Poornima in the month of Jyeshtha, around 22 June, 2005 if there are heavy clouds in the sky during the night time and these clouds disperse without raining is an AIFAS Research Journal of Astrology l Jul-Sep 2005

before the rains start. In this context it is said:

Note: In case Rule number 2 applies, it will revoke all the rules stated in Rule number 1.

;s"kq Hks"ofHko`"Va Hkw;Lrs"oso o"kkZfr izk;%A

3. In this case the following things have to be observed very carefully: During the Ashadh Krishna find out the day when the Moon transits through Poorvashada Nakshatra and keep an eye on the sky from that day onwards till a week at least. In the course of this particular observation from Poorvashada to Uttrashada day onwards any day with good showers is an indication of rains in the coming season. Showers on that particular day and leaving the earth wet will clearly indicate the rains in the forthcoming season even if it were not confirmed in Step number 1. In this context Sage Gara says:

izo`"Vs'kksHkua o"kZ o"kkZdkys fofufnZ'ksr~A Means :Shower / rains in the months of Poorvashada onwards definitely is an indication of sufficient rains during the coming season. Showers in the 5th Nakshatra when counted from Poorvashada indicate rains during the coming months, perhaps from Kartika onwards. • The total quantity of rainfall in the season will be further decided by the particular Nakshatra as tabulated below. • It is also helpful to decide about the rainy days in future. Rains are likely to make a repeated rather than a prominent show in the same Nakshatra which has been wet during the month of Ashadha. Thus a fundamental idea about the day and locality of rains could be determined much

4. This is one of the most important tool in deciding the rains and known as “ARDRA PRAVESHA “ i.e. time when the Sun enters Ardra Nakshatra. In the year 2005 Sun will enter Ardra Nakshatra on 22nd June, 2005 at 3:19 AM IST at Delhi. The Ardra pravesha chart thus erected is as under: • One should always use and give importance to the lagna rising at the time of casting of Ardra Pravesha Kundali. • Lagna is Taurus with the Sun, Venus and Mercury in the 2nd house, Saturn is in 3rd house, Jupiter & Ketu in 5th house, the Moon in 8th house, Mars & Rahu in the 11th house of Ardra Pravesh chart. • In the fixation of rainy day with the help of Ardra Pravesha kundali, the classics in this regard have assigned some of the zodiacal signs as watery and others as dry signs and out of these Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces are termed as watery signs while rest of the signs are dry. These are the views of ”Vanamala” which are as under:

dqEHkddZVdkS ehuedjkf'krqykèkjk%A ltykjk'k;% izksDrk futZyk% 'ks"kjk'k;%AA • Apart from this there are many yogas stated in “Mayura Chitraka”, “Vanamala” and Krishi Prashna”. Important: Whenever these rules are applied aptly in an “Ardra Pravesha” kundali it yields comprehensive and positive results pertaining to the forecasting of rainfall.

Mundane Astrology “ Ardra Pravesha” kundali for the year 2005 and prospects of rainfall are thus unhealthy. As mentioned above a dry sign, Taurus, is rising in Lagna of ‘ Ardra Pravesha’ kundali and most of the planets are posited in the dry signs. Saturn ( The Year Lord of Samvatsara) is posited in a ‘ watery sign but being himself a dry planet further under the influence of Rahu from the 11th house is again a negative factor. Interestingly this Rahu along with Mars is posited in a watery sign. Rahu is a planet of uncertainties and Mars is a fiery planet thus the chances of required amount of rainfall are remote. North-Eastern as well as Southern parts -of the country will have rains but that too in patches and much less than re-

quired.

Given below are some statements from the classics mentioned above: Jupiter and Mercury turn watery when these planets are placed in watery signs, while Venus and Moon are watery all the times:

Notes on Jaimini Astrology Lesson No. 2 Dr. Amar Aggarwal, Chandigarh Chapter

Argala : Before explaining argala here is a relevant sutra from Jaimini

nkjHkkX; 'kwyLFkkxZyk fu/;krq% Last word in Sutra i.e. fu/;krq means "From

aspecting planet", thus this is very much clear that argala is caused from the aspecting planet. Before defining the aspecting planet, it should be borne in mind that argala is a changed point which is most important for the judgment of financial as well as professional status of the native. A planet who aspects the janama lagna (ascendant) is known as an aspecting planet. The word 'dar' in sutra means 4th house/sign, 'shool' means 11th house/sign and 'bhagya' stands for 2nd house/sign. Thus planet/planets in the 2nd house, 4th house and /or 11th house from the aspecting planet give rise to shubhargala yoga. The planet/planets in these houses can be benefic or malefic, the shubhargala yoga retains its identity. But in case shubhargala yoga is caused as stated above, the corresponding 12th house, 10th house and 3rd house respectively should be vacant i.e. without any planet /planets, otherwise shubhargala yoga caused by the corresponding houses stands cancelled or in other words it can be said that a planet in 12th house counteracts the argala caused by a planet in 2nd house. In the same way planet/planets in 10th house counteracts the argala caused by 4th house and planet/planets in 3rd house counteracts the argala caused by 11th house. Before moving on to live examples on argalas, here is an imaginary illustration to make argala exposition clear:

This is a x x 5 horoscope with 4 6 Ve Su Leo lagna 3 Me 7 hence planets 8 from Libra, 2 A Sa Capricorn & x Aries will 1 11 9 aspect the 10 12 Ma janma lagna. Suppose a planet is placed in Libra and second house contains a planet and 12th house from Libra lies vacant, thus a shubhargala is caused. In case 4th house i.e. Capricorn has a planet while 10th house from Libra i.e. Cancer lies vacant again shubhargala yoga in caused. Lastly if 11th house from aspecting planet contains planet/planets at the same time 3rd house (marked x) from the aspecting is vacant, again shubhargala is caused. Note : An aspect is an influence. Thus an aspecting planet is influencing the janma lagna. Sage had not mentioned anywhere about the planet placed in janma lagna. Since a planet placed in janma lagna is influencing the janma lagna hence it should also be treated as an aspecting planet and referred argala causing positions should be studied in this case also. Cancellation of Shubhargala : In case 2nd house from the aspecting planet is having a planet and simultaneously there is a planet in 12th house from the aspecting planet thus the Shubhargala caused in second house gets cancelled. Sameway a planet in 10th house from the aspecting planet cancels the argala caused

Astro Learning by a planet in 4th house and a planet in 3rd house from the aspecting planet is capable of cancelling the argala caused by a planet in the 11th house from the aspecting planet. Example : Male Native, DOB : 23.01.1976, TOB : 22:30 PM IST, POB : Rajpura (Punjab) Janma lagna is Mo Virgo being 5 Ra 4 aspected by 7 6 8 Sa(R) Venus from 4th 9 house. Jupiter A 3 is placed in its Ve own sign Su 2 12 Pisces. From Me(R) Ma Ju 10 1 11 the aspecting Ke planet Venus there are two planets viz. Mercury & Sun in the second house whereas 12th house is vacant thus a shubhargala is caused. 4th house from Venus is occupied by Jupiter while corresponding 10th house is vacant, again Shubhargala is caused. Now 11th house from the aspecting planet Venus is occupied by Moon & Rahu causing a shubhargala and it remains intact since 3rd house from the aspecting planet is vacant. The Argalas caused by planets in 2nd house and 4th house are very powerful but the argala caused by planets has lost it potentials due to the placement of Rahu alongwith Moon in the 11th house. But out of the three argalas two shubhargalas are very powerful since in the 2nd house from the aspecting planet argala is caused by Mercury & Sun, here Mercury is lord of lagna. The argala caused by 4th house is again powerful since the argala causing planet Jupiter is placed in its own sign. The native is very well educated and settled abroad and is earning well. Note : Sage gives some relief while discussing Shubhargalas & its corresponding counteracting /cancelling of these shubhargalas. If the 2nd house, 4th house or the 11th house has more planets than the 12th house, 10th house or the 3rd house, in such a case intensity of Ashubhargala lessens but does not cancel the shubhargala completely. Further if the argala

causing signs contain planets in own house, in their exaltation signs or the shubhargala is caused by benefics only, under such conditions the virodhargala signs are not capable of cancelling the shubhargala thus formed. In the next sutra the sage deals with the argala caused by malefics

dkeLFkk rq Hkw;lk ikikue~A Karma means 3rd sign from the aspecting planet. In case 3rd house/sign is having more than two malefics or three planets out of which two are benefics and one is malefic but condition is that in this case the malefic planet should be longitudinally ahead of benefic this gives rise to a powerful argala and this argala never gets cancelled or doesnot have any Virodhargala sign. This is known as Nirbharasgala. Here sage treats the Sun, Saturn, Mars, weak Moon as malefic planets. There is no mention of Rahu & Ketu. Example : Mahatma Gandhi (Horoscope Courtesy Notable Horoscopes by Dr. B.V. Raman) In the chart of Sa Su M a h a t m a 7 8 6 5 Ve Ma Gandhi, father 9 Mo Me of the nation, 10 Libra sign rises 4 A Ke Ra in lagna. Moon from the 11th 1 3 11 Ju house aspects 2 12 janma lagna. Lagna is occupied by Mercury, Venus & Mars and out of these three, Mars the malefic planet is longitudinally ahead of Venus & Mercury thus giving rise to powerful Nirbhasargala Yoga. Out of the three planets involved in the formation of argala is lord of Lagna i.e. Venus thus making its Nirbhasargala yoga move powerful. (P.S. : Horoscope has been cast as per Raman Ayanamasha)

uU;wukfocyk'pA "Nanyuna vibalascha" is 8th sutra. In this sutra sage opines that in case 2nd, 4th or 11th signs AIFAS Research Journal of Astrology l Jul-Sep 2005

a from the aspecting planet will not be obstructed by the planets in 12th, 10th or 3rd house respectively, but the condition is that argala forming should have more planets with respect to the corresponding virodhargala sign. For example 4th house/sign from the aspecting planet is tenated by three planets and the corresponding virgodhargala house/sign i.e. 10th from the aspecting planet has one planet, in such a case subhargala caused by the planets in 4th house/sign remains intact. Further in case shubhargala causing sign contains its own lord or an exalted planet and at the same time virodhargala house/sign contains an inimical planet or debilitated planet, even under this condition shubhargala remains intact and not obstructed.

izkXor~ f=dks.ksA "Pragwat trikone" is 9th sutra which means if 5th & 9th houses from the aspecting planet are occupied by planet/planets, yet another argala yoga forms. But actually in case 5th house/sign from the aspecting planet contains planet, Shubhargala yoga is caused but at the same time if there are planet/planets in the 9th house from the aspecting planet, the shubhargala caused by the planet/planets in 5th house/sign gets cancelled by the planet/planets in the 9th house from the aspecting planet. Thus there are three categories of shubharagala yogas i.e. Principal argala, Specific argala and Secondary argala as tabulated below : Category

Shubhargala House/Sign

Virodhargala House/Sign

1 Principal

2nd,4th&11th

12th, 10th & 3rd

2. Specific

3rd under specific Not counteracted conditions

3. Secondary 5th, 9th

9th, 5th

Note : Principal, specific or secondary argala has to be counted from the aspecting planet only. Shubhargala stands intact when the corresponding virodhargala sign is vacant. Specific or Virodhargala when caused as per

the norms never gets cancelled. The shubhargala caused by a planet in the 5th house is negated by a planet in 9th house. Same way shubhargala caused by a planet in 9th house from the aspecting planet is negated by a planet in the 5th house from the aspecting planet and this is known as secondary argala.

foijhra dsrks% In Sutra 10, sage refers to the argala caused when Ketu becomes the aspecting planet. Sage stresses that in case Ketu is an aspecting planet the argala signs and the argala cancelling signs /houses should be taken in reverse order i.e. 12th, 10th & 3rd house/sign from the Ketu will be argala causing houses/signs whereas 2nd, 4th & 11th house/sign from Ketu will be argala obstructing houses or signs. It is just opposite to principal argala rules perhaps due to the retrograde motion of Ketu. Sage treats Rahu as the most malefic planet and goes to the extent that in case of principal argala is caused by planets in the referred houses/sign and the corresponding virodhargala houses/signs are vacant but in case these argala forming planets are in conjunction with Rahu, the shubhargala caused gets spoiled. Important : Before moving further, there is a point worth mentioning that in case no planet aspects the janma lagna, under such a condition, how to judge the argala points. In case no planet aspects the janma lagna, then a planet should aspect the 5th house from janma lagna. Further in case there is no planet who aspects janma lagna or the 5th house from janma lagna, in such a case a planet/planets should aspect the 9th house from the janma lagna. From this aspecting planet the respective argala signs/ houses should be considered. To elaborate this point an example is given below : Example : Male Native, DOB : 30.8.1979, TOB : 11:43 PM IST, POB : Chandigarh Sign Taurus rises in lagna. Lagna is vacant and it is not aspected by any planet. Mars from the 2nd house aspects the 5th house from janma

lagna thus qualifies to become an aspecting planet. In the 3rd house from Mars (aspecting planet) there are six planets thus Shubhargala yoga is caused. Since Saturn, a malefic planet is ahead of all the planets hence Specific/ Nirbhasargala is caused. The presence of Rahu is not welcome but as lagna lord i.e Venus and argala causing sign lord Sun are present, thus a powerful shubhargala is caused. Now all these planets are aspecting the 9th house thus all these become the aspecting planets. From these aspecting planets 4th house contains Moon while 10th is vacant, again a shubhargala yoga is caused. From these aspecting planets 11th house contains Mars, who is moon sign lord also, while 3rd house from the aspecting planet is vacant, another shubhargala is caused. Thus the horoscope is strengthened by three argalas. Out of these three, one is Nirbhasargala which remains intact under all circumstances. Argala caused by Mars being in 11th house from the aspecting planets is potential since this Mars happens to be the Moon sign lord. Due to the involvement of 8 planets in the formation of argalas which are not being counteracted under any circumstances, the native will enjoy the fruits of these throughout his life. Results of Shubhargala Yoga 1. Principal Shubhargala yoga as depicted in the table confers wealth and rajayoga. 2. Specific Shubhargala yoga/Nabharsargala confers independent and uninterrupted raja yoga. 3. Secondary shubhargala yoga when formed along with principal shubhargala yoga confers wealth, reputation and rajayoga.

(a) Rahu/Ketu in argala forming house/sign do not contribute to the formation of shubhargala yoga. (b) The argala sign must be reckoned from the aspecting planet only. Superior Shubhargala 1. When aspecting planet happens to occupy its own sign or its exaltation sign. 2. Moon's association with the aspecting planet enhances shubhargala yoga. 3. Aspecting planet when associated or aspected by an exalted planet is capable of enhancing the potential of shubhargala yoga. Inferior Shubhargala 1. Shubhargala potential is reduced to nil in case aspecting planet is associated with Rahu. 2. Subhargala potential is reduced much by the association of Ketu with the aspecting planet. 3. Subhargala potential decreases in case the aspecting planet is debilitated. 4. Rahu when occupies the 5th or 9th house from the aspecting planet, the shubhargala potential reduces. 5. Rahu in the 8th or 12th house from the

Major Role of the Moon in any Dasa, Bhukthi Results G.Sumathi, Hosur Chapter

T

he Vedic Astrology strongly emphasises that “Chandrama Nakshtranamadhipathi” means Moon is the significator or ruler of the stars. “Udu” means the planet Moon. That is why the Vimsotari Dasa system comprising 120 years is also called as Udu Maha Dasa. In this method 9 planets are allotted with their respective Number of years on the basis of a group of 3 stars assigned to them , in which moon is posited at the time of birth. As the mind is ruled by the planet moon Varaha mihira in his valuable “Brihat Jataka” chapter VIII stanza 11 reiterates

be a Dasa or bhukthi of any planet that runs in a nativity , it is very important to note down the position of the Moon on the date of such commencement of dasa and bhukthi.

The general meaning of the above sloka (not in the sense of verbatim) indicates that whatever

Hereinafter the position of such moon gives clue to interpret the entire dasa and bhukthi. This is a justified truth that any amount of reaping the good or bad result is suppose to affect directly the mind only, the ruler of which becomes the moon alone. This apart Varahamihira in his very first sloka itself pray the Sun God as Moorthithvey Parikalpathaha means Lord Shiva’s Ashtamoorthis viz., The Sun, Water,Earth, Air, Fire, Sky , Yayajuka (sacrifice performer) and the Moon are the primary agencies for the Creation , Protection and Destruction of the Universe. Mihira’s exemplory knowledge in having given greater importance to the Moon is also a reason that while all the planets are having debilitated Navamsa in their exalted sign, the planet moon alone is not having debilitated Navamsa in her exaltation sign Taurus.

Vedic Biological Mode in Cosmological Modelling Brijendra Shrivastava, Gwalior

The idea that the cosmos is a living being is generated by the hymns of Vedic Purush Sookta, which visualizes physical universe as an eternal being: "Sahastra sheersha purushah sahastrakshah sahastra paat, Sa bhoomim vishvato vratvati atishthit dash angulam.” That eternal Being has millions heads, legs and eyes; He encompasses entire universe from all directions; He subsists in everyone’s heart at 10 fingers distance away from naval region This is the Viraat Purush which Lord Krishna shows to mother Yashoda and warrior Arjuna. This Viraat Purush has been declared as greatest of great-purusham mahantam. It pervades universe and everything is contained in It-Sarvam sarvatmam. This situation is well defined by Astronomer Harlow Shapely when he asserts that man is after all made-up of dust of stars, all the minerals found in living organism are also found in earth's crust and distant stars. On this point of man-star relationship Indian cosmology is far more comprehensive. It declares: "yat pinde tat brahmande and yat brahmande tat pinde", meaning whatever exists in cosmos that also subsists in a microbe. And whatever exists in a microbe equally subsists in cosmos. The one million cow winning contest in King Janaka’s Sabha held between Gargi and Yagyavalakya also declares this fact. Time also modelled in bio-mode : The incomprehensible vastness of time and its relativity has also been modelled organically at macro molecular level as Brahma.100 years of

Brahma are equivalent to one Kalpa when evolution takes one full swing. But the events in the next Kalpa do not retrieve the deterministic old pattern but these recur with some variation which has been beautifully formulated in the term ‘Kalp bhed hari charit suhaaye. Space-time continuum in bio-mode : Indian cosmology has further visualized both space and time and even beyond in bio-mode in Nata Raaj Shiva, which embodies trinity of Time-past, present and future. However, Shiva is not confined to physical time whose existence is dependent on matter. German Physicist. Mach had postulated that time disappears with the disappearance of matter. This interrelatedness gives rise to a specific type of space called Bhoot-Aakash or matter wrapped space in Indian cosmology. Then there is another space created by our psyche or chitta which is called Chitta -Aakash. And finally we have Chit-Aakash, space which is Brahma itself. Goswami Tulsi Das has praised Lord Shiva whose abode is Chidaakaash- Chidaakaashmaakash vaasam bhajehaam. Such perception of Indian cosmology requires a paradigm shift in theoretical physics for mathematical modelling of Nata Raj Shiva. Earth history in bio-mode of Manu : The geological time division which traces tectonic history of earth perhaps can better be understood if manu is also perceived as biomodels of history of nature and quality of matter and life on earth. There are 14 manus. Each manu spans 306.72 million revolutions of earth around the sun and each manu has been given a specific nomenclature called manvantara according to stage of evolution of matter and

Concept quality of life. To cite a few: the first manvantara -Svyambhu Manu, signifies self originating matter the early Archean, the third uttam manu is late Archaen or early Proterozoic, the sixth chaakshusha manu or visible life or beginning of Cambrian, the seventh or current vaivasvata manu or life relating to the sun when mammals emerged with neurons activated by sun, the eleventh Surya Saavarni or body less mental state of life. According to this time division space walking and deathless life will emerge in fourteenth vishnu saavarni manu. Characteristics of biological evolution: Biological evolution is a shared field of physics, chemistry, biochemistry genetics ecosystem, and biomathematics and fussy mathematics where most laws are in a fluid state. However, major characteristics of organic evolution are said to be these: 1. Conservation of successful structures and functions, 2. Evolution of qualitatively new structures and functions to interact with new situations. 3. Dynamics of variation and selection. Viewed on this matrix of evolutionary biology the entire universes resembles and makes us feel that it is a living organism Viraat Purush where some uncertainty exists due to free will on his part. The orbiting planets, fissionfusion reaction in Sun generating and sustaining life on earth, the solar system moving in galactic plane, all suggest conservation of functions in a time frame, structures of galaxies emerging from cloud clusters along with stars, supernova dashing for a burst, matter counterbalancing antimatter all this exhibit constant interplay of all assumed four fundamental forces of nature. Application of Fuzzy mathematics: In Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle there is ‘fuzziness’ at atomic level. Based on such fuzziness the fuzzy school of mathematics developed recently is being tried in certain areas of bio-mathematics. In this system the variable does necessarily lie either at zero or at one but may lie in between an attempt to optimise the uncertainty element. However such variables at present often projects inconsistent reference

frames and require improvement. Therefore in quantifying biological universe with uncertainty principle, is it an individual being or the entire discernible cosmos, a new kind of mathematics with variable structure will have to be evolved to generate a truer picture of universe. Three-tier system of universe But the universe is not merely physical. There can exist and they do exist in substance, some other kinds of universes, independent of each other yet interrelated and one emanating from the other. This was postulated by Julian Huxley, co-worker of Darwin, in his ‘Evolution in Action’ that the universe is a three tier system1.The cosmological or physical universe, 2.The biological universe, and 3.The psychological universe. Various Indian and Western schools of philosophy of science have given different treatment to these universes; glimpse of Indian thinking is offered here: i.

That the physical universe came into existence first -hiranyagarbh janyamaas poorvah is held by Shwetashwatar upanishad But the physical universe is not the ultimate reality. On the contrary it is a veil or maya which conceals Truth. The face of truth stands covered by this ‘Hiran mayen paatra’, luminous vessel of physical universe -Hiran mayen paatren satyasva api hitam mukham.

ii. Then there is the biological universe consisting of living organism and plants etc. iii. The neural system of our body creates a new universe-the psychological universe. This is the platform on which we visualize the structures of physical and biological universes. Sir Arthur Eddington, a great physicist has categorically observed that the world stuff is nothing but mind stuff and that the universe is a structure of thought only. Indian cosmology scattered in various Upanishadas, holds that the river of universe originates out of five physical senses-panch AIFAS Research Journal of Astrology l Jul-Sep 2005

Pitfalls in Astrology N C Singal, Chandigarh

I

n predictive astrology, there are certain known parameters which when applied to a chart yield results. Such results depend upon the multiple yogas being formed in the chart. Other things which influence the results/delineations as taught by the Gurus are factors like operating dashas/antardashas -their Lords planetary avasthas, shadbalas, ashtakvarga strength, transit of major planets etc. The scope of this article is limited to share with persons whose heart throbs for astrology few simple but effective rules which possess the capacity to hijack the delineation of a given chart. Every astrologer would have faced heartache in his interpretations going awry. Such a situation is particularly petrifying for a budding astrologer. The pitfalls which we ignore to our peril may be numerous and would need dozens of pages to be counted and recounted, but we have come across a simple looking phenomenon which must not be lost sight of at the time of delineating a horoscope. It is the “Muhurta” at the time of the birth which needs an incisive peep by an astrologer. The muhurta factors are:

Sarpa Sheersh In order to limit the size of this article, we propose to deal with the “sarpa-sheersha” factor with the promise to revert in the next issues throwing light on the remaining factors. In literal translation, the sarpa-sheersha would mean the cobra head. No doubt, the most dreaded part of a cobra is its head where it deposits its venom and this venom has the invincible power to extinguish the lamp of a life. If we apply this parallel in astrology, it would bring us to understand that any such formation in a chart which qualifies to be known as the sarpasheersha has the capacity to extinguish all seemingly good things which otherwise bestow grace and happiness

• Gulika Kaala

The sarpa-sheersha affliction is created if Sun and Moon at the time of birth are in Scorpio and at the same time are in Anuradha Nakshatra. The span of Anuradha is from 213 degrees 20 minutes to 226 degrees and 40 minutes in the zodiac. It is stated in the ancient texts that the two luminaries in the above formation obtain to themselves such lethality that the native’s life becomes a living hell. The situation worsens if this formation should fall in the second half of Anuradha Nakshatra. The native suffers from incurable diseases and is generally short-lived. His destiny never flourishes. An example chart is discussed in this context. The details are:

• Gandanta

• Sarpa-sheersha • Samkranti • Vainashika Nakshatra • Yama-ghanta

For the seeker of the deep truth of astrology, the horoscope contains the affliction of the sarpasheersha factor which has swindled the chart of all its beauty. The native is an ordinary person in life, having graduate-level qualifications and working as a salesman with private company with no obvious hope lurking for him to raise the level of his living. The native was born with Sun and Moon in Scorpio in the first part of Anuradha Nakshatra. Perhaps being in the first half does not augur so evil as being in the second half does.

Mars - The Kinetic Force K. Santhanam, New Delhi

M

ars is the nearest planet to the Earth outside its own orbit. It’s diameter is approximately half of the earth around 4215 miles Mars is about 140 million miles away from the Sun and its radiations have great influence on the dynamism of all earthly beings. Mars is similar to Earth in many respects. Its axis is approximately tilted over from the perpendicular by about 23½ degrees and the time taken to spin once on this axis is only a trifle more than that of the earth. Its distance from the earth varies vastly at different times from 230 million miles when on the other side to about 50 million miles when in opposition and therefore harvesting this source of energy requires special skill. The other side of Mars is yet to be explored. Mars itself is full of white storm clouds, though the refracted rays from this planet to earth are reddish in colour. However, its presence in the Navagrahas helps greatly in generating the kinetic force within oneself for fulfilling all endeavours successfully. Mars was deemed to be born out of coagulation between the Lord and the Prithvi when the latter regretted that her Bhoomi was dull I and lust less. With the birth of the Mars, dynamism entered the Earth. It reigns the first effective day of the working week- Tuesday-as Sunday and Monday representing the Sun and Moon are physically the body and mind of the human being. The lord of the first Rasi of Kala purusha i.e Mesha is Mars. The Tamil month also starts with Mesha.. Mars is signified by the Number 9. Any number multiplied by 9 and added will return to

Mars defines the flow of blood within the human system. It governs the throat, thyroid glands, activation of sexual organs and blood transfusion as well as that of mensus in women - so much necessary for creation of progeny. Mars stands upright facing the South i.e. the Agni Kon, in the configuration of icons in the concord of Navagrahas. This placement defines the resources for creative thinking and constructive implementation i.e. Yam and Niyama of the dynamic beings of the Mother Earth. The Mars icon absorbs the varying martian power, modulates it and transfers it to the one who stands in front of it. At least three pradhakshinas to this Graha is necessary after absorbing its power, to avoid clotting of the enormous internal energy it supplies. The following sloka adeptly describes the importance and value of the MARTIAN rays: Dharani garbha sambhotham, Vidhyut kanthi samaprabham Kumaram shakthi hastham, Tham Mangalam pranamamyaham I bow to Lord Mars, the giver of constructive force, ability to absorb the Divine Blessings of the Mother and the sustenance of continued dynamism. 9. It falls outside the scope of 1 to 8, which defines the start of life and its end, respectively. Mars is therefore the Eternal Athma embedded in the precious human structure. This has also led to its importance for the purpose of smooth progeny and thereby evolved the Mars or Mangal dosa. The rays emanating from this graha fall in the high wavelength radiations of 900 nanometers and above.

a The above is the inner meaning of the sloka where vidhyut kanthi is the generation of constructive powers, Kumaram i.e.Ka -UMARam meaning the ability to absorb the Blessings of the ever-giving Mother and Shakthi hastham the giver of sustainable dynamism. It is advised that all adolescent women especially those prone to regular abortions should do at least eleven pradhakshinas daily of this Graha immediately after pregnancy is known and up to the end of the second month, to ensure the hardening of the embryo within and subsequent normal delivery of child. Its presiding deity is Lord Karthikeyan. The need for Mars compatibility in the male and female horoscopes becomes essential due to the following constitutional requirements: (i) The inter-sexual activation between the male and the female leads to high evolution of dynamic energy, which could cause breakdown of the participating glands if the partner is unable to sustain it, leading to unwanted abortions or to difficulties during delivery.

can lead to unwanted discord in marital happiness mentioned above. It would be like synchronizing a 50c/s frequency electrical supply to a 60c/s frequency electrical line. Having said this, it may be stated that Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio and the Chara Rasis have an inherent ability to cater to intense Martian forces and could therefore be safely excluded from the post effects of Mars dosha. In all other cases the strength of the mutual Mars of the couple should be always studied in depth before accepting or rejecting the alliance. It may be mentioned that only when Mars is in an unupachaya position from the lagna of a female aspects the Moon on the 5th day after the stoppage of regular mensus can there be any possibility of fertilization of her Ovum i.e. termination of mensus of a fertile woman and fructification of progeny. It would be appreciated how necessary it is to possess a congenial environment-both internal and external, between the couple for effective and healthy progeny to occur.

The so called Mars Dosha in a horoscope of the male or the female arises when Mars is positioned in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th houses from mainly the Lagna as also from the Moon or Venus in the Lagna Kundali or the Navamsa. It could be seen that the effect of Mars Dosha is upon the 7th or 8th houses i.e. that of the partner or in him/her ability to create a home8th being the Kutumbha sthana of the partner.

It is seen that where there is a slight incompatibility between the two-martian forces of the couple, progeny do occur but do cause problems during delivery. In such cases the use of the radiations from a lamp lighted with ghee and projected on the naval of the female daily for the first three months of impregnation can lead to successful progeny. She should also avoid the use of any fast moving vehicle during this period. It is a known fact, that Mars is a vital tool for enunciation of passionate feelings in an individual, especially when in conjunction with Venus in a fiery sign and could lead to legal or illegal wedlock, which are invariably short lived. As this aspect is not considered in Western countries with necessary importance, it leaves nearly 50% of the children without one or the other of their parents. Clearly it goes to substantiate the fact how useful Astrology has been, to create happy and harmonious homes.

It would therefore be seen that non-equality in the ability of either of the partner to absorb and sustain the dynamic Martian force of the other

Mars- Saturn combination in a mutual Kendra or if the former is in a fiery sign does give a tendency towards epileptic disorders or

(ii) To avoid disharmony in the ejaculation of the partners, leading to loss of satisfaction of this divine function, which in turn creates high internal stress that may not be expressed vocally or lead to seeking divorces. It may be mentioned that this is the basic cause for 90% of divorces prevalent today though other reasons are given externally. This also is one of the main causes for the various diseases leading to poor sustainability of the modem human beings.

susceptibility towards throat cancer especially when placed in a non congenial position from the Lagna. If detected early by an efficient astrologer these deficiencies could be removed by use of proficient and disciplined breathing resources and Mantras. A weak Saturn in such cases especially in the Mesha/Thula axis indicates weak pancreas and consequent diabetic disorders. The joining of Mars with a congenial and strong Jupiter, leads one to possess high investigative and creative abilities while the combined influence of Mars and Saturn on a strong Lagna / Lagna Lord leads one to stimulate kinetic power from own resources. The power of Mars is just like a car, when driven rashly it injures oneself while if driven with discipline and proper mode it can take one pleasantly a long way in life. The modulation of Martian forces of one who possess the former deficiencies can easily be achieved by natural means that would enable him to tread the journey

of life with alacrity and dynamism. It can be seen that a benign Mars influencing the 5th or 10th houses of an individual, makes him a highly proficient electrical/ electronics engineer or an expert in the traction or automobile fields. Coral is the ideal gemstone for modulating the Martian forces to enable optimal utilization of both external and internal resources. It should be worn only in silver ring with the bottom open. Its abode is the Vaithyeswarn temple in Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu. Mars is the essential tool for ensuring proper functioning of the Vishuddi Chakra, which enables the smooth flow of the Prana to the Ajna Chakra. The use of the 16 Beeja Aksharas for this Chakra would stimulate the Maritian forces in the appropriate direction to generate optimum energy for efficient functioning of the thought and implementation process of human r beings .

Exaltation of Planets Sita Ram Singh, New Delhi

T

he fundamentals of Indian Astrology are the twelve signs and twenty-seven Nakshatras spread along the 360° Zodiac, seven planets and two Chayagrahas (Nodes). Except the Sun and Moon, the other five planets own two signs each. Being mathematical points, the Chayagrahas have no mass and hence no physical existence like other Grahas (planets). However, due to their profound effect on human affairs, these have been assigned the status of planets, though there is difference of opinion among the ancient Rishis about the ownership and exaltation signs of Rahu and Ketu. These nine planets own three Nakshatras each. The traditional Indian astrologers regard only these nine planets quite sufficient for making correct prediction and consider reference to trans-Saturnine planets Herschel, Neptune and Pluto not necessary. The quality and quantity of the result produced by the planets depends on their location in a sign and house of the horoscope whether in own, mooltrikona, exaltation, friendly or enemy sign and whether in a benefic or evil house. The nine planets have their Ucchasthan (exaltation sign) and the exact opposite sign is their Neechasthan (debilitation sign). An exalted planet produces highly favourable results in its dasa and bhukti. The exaltation of the Sun, Moon and Jupiter improves their benefic qualities, while the exaltation of Mars, Rahu and Ketu mellows down their evil propensities. The exalted planets, however, fail to fulfil the expectations if these are aspected by or associated with, strong malefics, or are debilitated in Navamsa chart. The experience shows that if the horoscope on the whole lacks strength, an exalted planet may

not produce the expected result. Moreover, the native should run the dasa of the exalted planet at an appropriate age to enjoy the effect. The rationale behind the exaltation of different planets is as follows : Sun : The Vedic name of the Sun is ‘Aditya’ that is, the son of ‘aditi’, which means ‘of unchangeable nature’. Accordingly the Sun symbolises (immortal soul) and heart. Whenever Sun, its sign Leo, the 5th house and its lord are afflicted by malefic planets, particularly by Rahu, one is prone to heart problem. Another name of the Sun is ‘Bhaskara’, which means “The source of light”. Since human eyes are the instruments for seeing light, there is an intimate connection between the Sun and the eyes. Whenever the second house, its lord and the Sun are afflicted by malefics, one suffers from eye trouble. Yet another name of the Sun is ‘Savitri’ meaning ‘The inspirer’. Astrologically the Sun inspires spirituality (Love of God ). The location of Sun in the 6th house destroys enemies and in the 10th house the Sun gives power, authority, name and fame. Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac, owned by Mars, is assigned the exaltation sign for the Sun. In the natural Zodiac Aries is the 10th house from Leo and the Sun gets sthan bala (positional strength) in the 10th house. Further, Aries is a male, moveable, positive and fiery sign. The Sun is a fixed luminary with fiery element. Mars, the owner of Aries is Sun’s friend, whose qualities of courage and dynamism go well with the Sun’s love of authority and supremacy. Aries is also a male and positive sign which allows Sun a free play. The Sun in exaltation gets dazzling power

Review which adversely affects the eyesight of the native or causes early demise of father for whom the Sun is Karaka (significator). The native also becomes over-bearing and pompous. The highest exaltation point of the Sun is 10° in Aries, which falls in Aswini Nakshatra, whose lord Ketu is significator for ‘Moksha’. Aries represents active surroundings. The Sun in Aswini Nakshatra inclines to spirituality. In spite of active life, the native remains conscious of the goal of his life, that is, liberation or realization of God. The Sun is in deepest debilitation at 10° in Libra sign owned by Venus, in Swati Nakshatra owned by Rahu. Both the house lord and Nakshatra lord are inimical to the nature of the Sun. The Sun is fiery whereas Venus is a watery planet and Rahu causes grahana (eclipse) of the Sun. In such adverse surrounding the Sun is not able to express its qualities which get toned down. Hence the Sun is considered debilitated in Libra. Moon : The Moon is called ‘Soma’ in the Vedas. ‘Soma’ means ‘A gentle refreshing drink’. The other name ‘Chandra’ conveys the sense of pleasure. Hence happiness and pleasure (experienced through mind) and gentle feelings and compassion (found in mother) are astrologically related to the Moon. Whenever the fourth house, its lord and the Moon are associated with, or afflicted by malefics, or otherwise ill placed in the horoscope, the health of mother suffers and the individual lacks peace of mind and may even suffer from psychological and emotional problems. While the Sun is the ring of the solar system, Moon is regarded the queen. The Sun represents soul and the Moon symbolises mind. As the Moon is Queen of the King Sun, adjacent second sign of Zodiac is assigned to the Moon as its exaltation sign. In the natural Zodiac from Cancer (the sign of Moon) Taurus is the 11th sign signifying fulfilment of desires. The highest exaltation point of Moon is 3° in Taurus, in Kritika Nakshatra, whose lord is Sun. The Sun, as stated earlier is Atma or the soul. The Moon representing the mind is in its best state when it

is in harmony with the soul. Taurus is governed by Venus, the planet of luxuries. In the fixed and earthy sign Taurus, the fickleness of the Moon is not much tempted by the Venusian surroundings as fixed and earthy sign Taurus controls Moon’s flight of imagination and makes the native worldly wise and practical. The tender nature of Moon finds an easy expression in the feminine Venusian sign of Taurus. The watery nature of the Moon also finds a fertile ground in the earthy sign Taurus. A strong Moon and strong Ascendant make the native rich, famous and contented. One seldom finds a poor or unhappy individual with Moon in Taurus. The Moon is in deep debilitation at 3° in Scorpio, a watery, negative and fixed sign owned by Mars, a fiery planet. Water and fire are inimical in nature. In the selfish sign of Scorpio the sensitivity of Moon acts tainted with selfishness. The Martian influence makes it excited and reckless. The Moon is considered weak within 72° on either side of the Sun. The Moon also represents lungs (4th house). A weak and afflicted Moon in the 8th house makes the native susceptible to dropsy and T.B., and indicates a sickly childhood. An afflicted Moon in 12th house adversely affects the left eye. Mars : The Vedic name of Mars is ‘Angaraka’, meaning ‘burning coal’. The name amply describes the fiery nature of Mars and its red colour. Red colour represents energy, blood, muscles, ambition, enterprise, adventure, the army (who is after the blood of the enemy), accidents (causing loss of blood) and mechanical workshops using furnaces. A Martian native acts in haste without thought. An afflicted or ill placed Mars causes quarrels, accidents and injury commensurate with its affliction. Mars gets the highest exaltation at 28° in Capricorn, in own Nakshatra Dhanishta. The lord of Capricorn, Saturn is bitter enemy of Mars. Mars, as a true soldier, is at its best in enemy’s camp when well guarded in own Nakshatra, always alert and cautious. It is no more rash AIFAS Research Journal of Astrology l Jul-Sep 2005

a and develops a sense of caution, reflection and restraint. The earthy sign of Capricorn suits Mars who is Bhumiputra (The son of earth). In the sign of cool and calculative Saturn, Mars gets the virtue of reflection before action. In the natural Zodiac, from Aries (the positive sign of Mars) Capricorn is the 10th house and Mars gets sthanbala (positional strength) in the 10 house. Mars gets deeply debilitated at 28° in Cancer , a watery sign, in the Nakshatra of Ashlesha ruled by inimical Mercury. Such a setting is detrimental to the energy and drive of Mars. In Cancer, the house of imaginative Moon and inimical Mercurian Nakshatra, the Martian characteristic of aggression gets accentuated into recklessness. It is like applying brake to a vehicle running full speed, which results in loss of balance. Hence Cancer is not congenial to Mars and is regarded its debilitation sign. Mercury : ‘Buddha’is the Vedic name of Mercury. ‘Buddha’ means ‘related to Buddhi (intellect)’. Astrological works mention Mercury as significator of education, speech and intellect. Because of the relationship with knowledge, Mercury is known as ‘the knower’. Mercury is a changeable planet, of dual nature, and also owns two dual signs, namely, Gemini and Virgo. Mercury is also the second quickest moving planet after the Moon. By virtue of changeability, it lacks steadiness. In Indian astrology, Mercury is called ‘Kumara’(young boy) who needs support. The Mercurians, like creepers, require a strong support to bloom brilliantly. Mercurians are very good advisers but seldom succeed independently. Out of the four dual signs of the Zodiac, the fiery sign of Sagittarius does not suit Mercurial nature. The watery and mystic sign of Pisces is also not suitable. Both Sagittarius and Pisces are opposite to Mercury’s own signs of Gemini and Virgo. Among the rest, Gemini is its own positive sign, an intellectual sign, and helps in improving Mercurial imagination. Mercury finds a better ground in its earthy and negative sign of Virgo where it becomes practical and pragmatic.

The highest point of exaltation of Mercury at 15° Virgo, is in the Nakshatra of Hasta, owned by Moon. Mercury represents intellect, while Moon represents feelings and imagination. When intellect retains its logic and yet is considerate to others, nothing could be more sublime than that. The rationale of Mercury’s exaltation in Virgo is therefore in consonance with moral, spiritual and psychological principles. As stated above, Pisces is not congenial to Mercury where it is regarded debilitated. Its deepest debilitation point is 15°. Although it is a common belief that Mercury is enemy of Jupiter, yet when Mercury is in association with Jupiter, the intellect is definitely elevated. The intuition of Mercury combined with wisdom of Jupiter produces learned scholars and successful astrologers. Venus : The Vedic name of Venus is ‘Shukra’, which has a variety of meanings, such as ‘refined’, ‘sensual’ and ‘seminal’. Venus represents everything that is refined, fine arts, ornaments, luxury items, vehicles and all worldly comforts (Iha-Loka-Sukha). A Venusian is handsome, graceful, full of joy, happiness, love and sympathy, sociable and a person of aesthetic tastes, who completely remains engrossed in enjoyment, which leaves him no time for religion. Venus is also called Kalatra karaka, significator for marriage. A Venusian generally marries early and leads a happy married life. If ever unmarried, his private life will not be above board. When Venus and 7th house are afflicted by malefics, the native becomes a reckless profligate who satisfies his physical passions somehow or the other and also suffers due to over indulgence. According to Hindu mythology, Shukra (Acharya of Asuras) was blinded in one eye by Lord Vishnu during Vaman Avtar. If Venus is not well posited and is afflicted, the eyes are affected. Venus when afflicted by Saturn and Ketu causes skin trouble, being significator for beauty of the skin. The highest exaltation point of Venus is at 27° in Pisces, owned by Jupiter, in Revati Nakshatra, owned by Mercury. Pisces is the last sign of the

Review Zodiac and represents detachment from the worldly pleasures after tasting them, and leads to Moksha. In Pisces the sensuality of Venus gets disciplined, restrained and chastened under the Satvik (Virtuous) influence of Jupiter and discrimination of Mercury. This setting keeps sensual enjoyment within limit and the humanitarian qualities of love, sympathy and compassion become prominent. Venus becomes deeply debilitated at 27° in the opposite sign of Virgo, which is the negative house of Mercury, in Chitra Nakshatra owned by Mars. As Mercury and Venus are natural friends and Virgo is an earthy and moveable sign. Apparently Venus should not give bad results in Virgo. But on deeper insight we notice that its location in Chitra Nakshatra ruled by Mars provides energy to excite the Venusian sensuous character. The changeable nature of Virgo and its imaginative lord Mercury also give a fillip to Venusian indulgence. Hence the debilitation of Venus in Virgo is logical. Jupiter : The Vedic name of Jupiter is ‘Brihaspati’. ‘Brihat’ means large and ‘Pati’ means protector. Jupiter is the most benefic planet. It protects and boosts the affairs of the houses it aspects. In mythology, Jupiter is called Deva Guru or preceptor of devatas. As Guru, Jupiter confers the qualities of wisdom, learning and intellectual achievements. In the horoscope of females, Jupiter is significator for husband. According to the dictum .’Sthan hani karoti Jivah’, Jupiter does not augment the affairs of the house where it is posited, but the houses aspected by it prosper. As significator of progeny it represents the son in particular. The highest exaltation point of Jupiter is 5° in Cancer Sign, which is 5th from Jupiterian sign Pisces. The 5th house denotes intelligence, success, fame and purva punya. The highest exaltation point of Jupiter in Cancer falls in Pushya Nakshatra. In Cancer, owned by Moon, the emotional and imaginative quality of Jupiter gets a boost and makes an idealist philosopher. Pushya’s lord Saturn denotes samadhi. The fickleness of Moon is not able to disturb the

spirituality of Jupiter in Pushya Nakshatra. Hence assigning Cancer as the exaltation sign of Jupiter is quite appropriate for blossoming the pious qualities of Jupiter. However, Jupiter’s increased ethical and philosophical nature proves a handicap for material progress. Such a person becomes averse to material gains either for self or for his near and dear ones. This characteristic is pronounced when exalted Jupiter is located in Kendra or Kona in the horoscope. An exalted Jupiter in the 7th house generally inclines a person to celibacy, because he considers marriage and family a burden. Moon, lord of Cancer, is a weak dispositor for exalted Jupiter. For Sagittarius Lagna, Jupiter’s claim to exaltation becomes blemished with location in the 8th house. Pisces lagna in that way is better, as Jupiter occupies the 5th house from it. However, it suffers from the dicta ‘karko bhava nasya’. Despite, all this, it is considered advantageous to have an exalted Jupiter irrespective of its placement, because then it unfolds humanitarian qualities of the individual. Jupiter’s deepest debilitation point is 5° in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn and in Uttarashada Nakshatra ruled by the Sun. While Saturn is cold, self-centered and miserly, Jupiter is warmhearted, kind and charitable. Capricorn is the 10th sign of natural Zodiac governing profession, position, prestige and status in life. Nakshatra lord Sun also represents power and authority. Jupiter’s nature does not fit in this worldly and materialistic sign. Jupiter’s placement in Capricorn does accentuate materialistic tendencies, but only through honest means and hard work. As Jupiter loses much of its inherent philosophical and philanthropic qualities in this sign, it is considered debilitated in Capricorn. Saturn : Saturn is the fartherest planet from the Sun in the solar system. In Indian mythology he has been assigned the role of the judge of our karmas (actions) and dispenses reward or punishment. Saturn’s distant location affects its movement. Due to slow motion it is also called mandah (slow). Saturn (Shani) is described as ‘Shaneh Shaneh charatri iti AIFAS Research Journal of Astrology l Jul-Sep 2005

a Shaneshcharah’. Due to its slow motion Saturn is karaka (significator) for longevity. In the 8th house it increases longevity as an exception to the dictum ‘Karako bhava nasya’. As per another dictum ‘Sthan Vriddhi karoti Mandah’, Saturn gradually augments through hard work the affairs of the house it occupies in a horoscope, and harms the houses aspected therefrom. Being away from the Sun (heat and light), Saturn is cold, dark in complexion, lean, miser, introvert, melancholic, lacking in warmth and happiness. If Saturn is afflicted in the horoscope, the native becomes avaricious, deceitful and conspirator. Thus Saturn stands for paucity, restriction, poverty and turns one to religious pursuits. The effect of Saturn is experienced late in life, generally after 36 year. Being cold, contracting and karaka for 6th, 8th and 12th houses, Saturn causes lingering chronic diseases like paralysis, rheumatism, asthma, neurosis, constipation, tuberculosis, etc. Saturn is exalted in Libra. In the natural zodiac, Libra happens to be the 10th sign from Capricorn and 9th sign from Aquarius, the two houses owned by Saturn. The 10th and 9th houses are the most powerful Kendra and Kona houses in a horoscope. Saturn’s highest exaltation point is 20° in Libra, the positive sign of V enus, in Swati Nakshatra owned by Rahu. Venus the lord of Libra, and Rahu the Nakshatra lord, are Saturn’s friends’ (‘Shani vat Rahu’). Rahu is as much a factor for adversity as Saturn. The miser, selfish and dry Saturn becomes considerably liberal in warm-hearted, sympathetic and benevolent Venusian sign. The caution and prudence of Saturn gains width of vision, expansiveness and becomes charitable and benevolent. In the Nakshatra of Rahu, its friend, Saturn does not forget its essential nature. When a poor man does not get intoxicated on getting wealth, it becomes a rare virtue. An exalted Saturn in Lagna (Libra) gives one high position and comforts in life. Saturn is in deep debilitation at 20° in Aries, the positive and fiery sign of Mars, his bitter enemy. Saturn becomes cynical and foolhardy in Aries.

Saturn’s association with Mars produces sinful nature. Hence, debilitation of Saturn in Aries is quite justified. Rahu and Ketu : During its movement around the earth, the orbit of Moon intersects the path of the Sun (Ecliptic) at two points which are exactly 180° apart. When the intersection occurs during the Moon’s motion from South to North, it is called ascending or North Node (Rahu) and when the Moon’s motion is from North to South, the intersection point is called the descending or Southern Node ( Ketu). When the New Moon (on Amavasya) is within 5° from the Nodal point, it intercepts the light of the Sun from reaching the Earth and the phenomenon is called Solar Eclipse. The degree of proximity of the Moon to the Node determines the extent of the eclipse. When the Full Moon (on Purnima) crosses the Nodal point, the shadow of the earth falls on the Moon and a Lunar Eclipse is the result. As the only apparent phenomenon that can be connected with Rahu and Ketu are the eclipses, when shadow (chaya) obscures the Sun or the Moon, the savants of Indian astrology gave them the name of ‘chayagraha’ or shadowy planets. The Western astrologers have named Rahu and Ketu as Dragon’s Head and Dragon’s Tail respectively, thereby revealing their origin from the Hindu mythology. They consider Rahu as benefic and Ketu as malefic, while Indian authorities regard both Rahu and Ketu as tamsik (malefic) in nature. Rahu is often described as giving the results akin to Saturn according to the dictum ‘Shani vat Rahu’. However, while Saturn is cool, clandestine and secretive, Rahu is ambitious, practical and confrontist and believes in achieving the goal by hook or crook. Ketu is said to give results similar to Mars -’Kuja vat Ketu. However, while Mars is active and argumentative, Ketu is psychic and mystical. Rahu has rajsik relationship with Venus, friendly relationship with Saturn and spoils Mercury and Jupiter. Sun, Moon and Mars are Rahu’s enemies. Ketu has satvik relationship with Jupiter and is friendly to the Sun, Moon and Mars. It is neutral

Review to Mercury, while Venus and Saturn are its enemies. Some astrological works assign 5th, 7th, 9th and 12th house full aspect to Rahu and Ketu from their location, while others deny this on the ground that the Nodes are only mathematical point without any mass, volume and light. As malefics, Rahu and Ketu give good result when posited in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses of the horoscope. When well situated in the horoscope, associated with or aspected by benefic and Yogakarka planets, they give good results in the matter of finance and prosperity in their ruling period. Rahu (like Saturn) gives chronic diseases depending on its location, aspect and association of malefics, and Ketu (like Mars)causes injury and even death. The majority of Indian authorities have assigned Virgo as own sign to Rahu, Aquarius as its Mooltrikona sign, Gemini as its sign of exaltation and Sagittarius as the debilitation sign of Rahu. Pisces is considered as own sign of Ketu, Leo as its Mooltrikona sign, Sagittarius as its exaltation sign, and Gemini as its house of debilitation. Some authorities consider Taurus as the exaltation sign of Rahu and Scorpio as the exaltation sign of Ketu. The opposite sign Scorpio becomes the sign of debilitation of Rahu and Taurus becomes the sign of debilitation of Ketu.

a In the light of the foregoing the own, mooltrikona and exaltation signs allotted to Ketu, just opposite to Rahu, also hold good. According to Hindu Karma Theory, Rahu denotes the culmination of past sins committed within the family, that give results in this life of the individual, whose destiny is linked with the family. On the other hand, Ketu is the means through which this family curse or destiny can be altered by intelligent and constructive efforts directed into wholesome channels for attaining liberation, after the prarabdha ( results of past Karma) has been worked out in the pattern of destiny. Ketu is, therefore, called Mokshakaraka. To conclude, exaltation sign of the planets have been allotted on the basis of valid rationale and logic. The result produced by an exalted planet is commensurate with the nearness of the planet to its highest exaltation point and are experienced during its dasa-bhukti, provided it is not afflicted by malefics or debilitated in Navamsa Chart. r

Assigning Gemini as exaltation sign to Rahu appears more logical. Rahu is sensitive in nature and acts as a catalyst in fructification of good or bad events in human life. Gemini is an airy sign owned by intelligent and volatile Mercury. Moreover, Gemini contains the full Nakshatra Aridra owned by Rahu and three Padas of Punarvasu owned by Jupiter. Rahu does not have inimical relationship with Mercury. Rahu is scientific and practical and is quite comfortable in Gemini. It gives the best results when posited in own Nakshatra Aridra from 6°40’ to 20° in Gemini. Similarly Aquarius, the Mooltrikona sign, is also an airy and intellectual sign owned by Rahu’s friend Saturn, and contains its full Nakshatra Satabisha, and three-fourth of Purvabhadrapada Nakshatra owned by Jupiter. Ayurdaya or Longevity SVLN Sarma, Pithapuram Chapter AIFAS

Ayurdaya or Longevity : In Astrology the prediction of longevity of an individual is a very difficult and tough problem and a complicated one. However great the astrologer may be, still the result of prediction is never 100% accurate. It becomes approximate only. While predicting or analyzing a chart it is best suggested that first of all the longevity of the native must be noticed since our ancient sages aptly sum up the theory in the following sloka : purna mayuhu parikshaiv paschallakshna muchate, ayurvina naranamtu lakshanaiah kim prayojanam “. It means if there is no longevity in the native's chart, there is no use of having other yogas. In such circumstances hats off to the greatest astrologer Varahamihara, who could predict the death of the son of his king. This is the greatest proof of the greatness of our ancient Vedic Astrology.

Balarista (Infant Mortality) Balarishta is one of the four divisions of Span of human life. It is otherwise known as infant mortality. The child dies before the age of 8 years due to peculiar combinations of planets in different bhavas. Some factors are mentioned below : “Chandrastamancha dharanisuta saptamancha Rahur navamancha Sani janma Guru struteeye, Arkastu pancha Brughu shatka Budha Chaturdhe Ketur vyayetu janitor maranaya sadyaha." i.e., Moon in 8th, Mars in 7th, Rahu in 9th, Saturn in lagna, Guru in 3rd, Sun in 5th, Venus in 6th, Budha in 4th, & Ketu in 12 th house cause Balarishta to the native. Following combinations may also be considered :

1. Balarishta (Infant mortality) : It means the death before 8 years. 2. Alpayu (Short life) : It means the death between 8 to 32 years. 3. Madhyayu ( Middle life) : The span of life between 33 to 75 years. 4. Purnayu ( Full life ) It is from 75 to 120 years.

1. Weak Moon in the ascendant or in the 8th house. 2. Malefics in quadrants. 3. Malefics in the last navamsa of the rasi. 4. Malefics in 2nd,6th,8th, and 12th houses. 5. Lord of dasa at birth in conjunction with evil planets. 6. Rahu in 7th house aspected by Sun and Moon. 7. Saturn + Mars in lagna or 8th house or 7th house. 8. Balarista stars and padas:

Some authors are of the opinion that Madhyayu extends from 32 to 70 years. Purnayu extends from 70 to 100 years. In accordance of Vimshottari dasa Purnayu extends upto limit of 120 years i.e., Deerghayu.

Aswani 2,4. Bharani 2, Krithika 3, Rohini 1,2, & 4, Mrigasira 1, .Pushyami 1, Makha 2, Uttara 2, Hasta 3,& 4, Chitra 2, Visakha 4, Anuradha 3, Jyesta 3, Moola 2,3; Uttarashada 1, Dhanishta 2, Satabhisha 1, and Uttara-bhadra 4th pada.

Longevity (Human life span) can be classified under four important types :

If strong malefics occupy Kendras 4th, 7th, & 10th bhavas. 7. Rahu and Moon occupy 7th & 8th houses and Jupiter is in the lagna. 8. If the lord of 8th bhava is in the ascendant and the lagnathipathi is weak. Madhyayu Combination or configuration of planets to give madhyayu : 1. If the lord of 3rd or 6th bhava is in a Kendra sthan. 2. Mercury, Jupiter, & Venus in 2nd, 3rd &11th houses. 3. Lords of 1,8,10,11 are powerful. 4. Birth lord in 6th or 8th house with malefics. 5. If Saturn dasa is at birth time and Moon is in 8th or 12th bhava and other planets in 11.

6. For Scorpio lagna, Jupiter in lagna, Mars and Rahu are placed in 11th house. 7. Mars & Mercury are in quadrants, Venus is in ascendant & exalted planets in the 3rd and 11th houses. 8. Mars in 5th, Sun in 7th and Saturn is debilitated. Purnayu The planetary combinations for purnayu are as below : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Lagna is aspected by the lagna lord. 8th house aspected by the 8th lord Jupiter in Kendra sthanas. If Jupiter is in a quadrant from the lord of the birth with no malefics in the quadrants. Jupiter in lagna, Venus in 4th & Saturn & Moon in 10th. Jupiter in lagna, Venus in 4th, Mercury in 5th & Sun in 6th give long life i.e., purnayu. Benefic planets in quadrants & trines, malefics in 3, 6,10, & 11 bhavas, life is upto 98 years. If all planets are in quadrants, the person lives 100 years.

It is further to state that in Indian astrology the longevity is not beyond human control. The lives of anti-social elements are lost by mix of violence, hate, anger, jealousy, greed and by arrogance etc., On the other hand there are countless examples where a life of spirituality, piety, peace and piousness has given a span of ninety years and more. In Jataka parijata the philosophy of longevity is explored in some of following Slokas : “Ye dharma kharma nirata dwijatevabhakta ‘. ye padhya bhojanarata vijitendriyascha. ye manavaa dadhati satkula seelamaa steshamldam kadhita mayu rudardhibhihi’ This Ayus has been declared by wise men in respect of those who are engaged In the practice of virtuous actions, who are devoted to the pious and to God, who eat wholesome food, who keep their senses under control and who preserve the noble traditions of character and conduct of their families. fopkj xks"Bh Review

a “Ye papa lubdhachowraa ye deva brahmana nimdakaha bavha sinascha ye teshamakaala maranam nrunaam” V -36. Premature death overtakes those who are sinful, covetous, thievish, who revile God and the virtuous and who are addicted to gluttony. Apamrutyu hetuvs “Dhanne vikalpa budhinam dhuseelanam cha vidwishaam brahmananam cha devanaam para dravyapa hannaam” -V.37 "Bhayam karaanaam sarveshaam Murkhanaam pisunasya cha swa dharmachara hinanam papa karmopajeevinaam.” V- 38. "Sastreshwa niyutaanaam cha mudhanamapa mrutyuvaha anyeshaa muthamayuhu swadithi sastra vido vidhilhu.” V- 39.

Sudden death seizes those who are sceptical of the force of moral law, who are vicious and hateful of God and the pious, who steal others’ goods, who are a source of dread to all, who are foolish and indulge in calumny, who have abandoned their duties and observances, who live by sinful sources, and those who would not wholly abide by the tenets of the sacred scriptures. Those who excel ( in astrology) regard the rules of Ayus as applying only to people other than those declared as liable to untimely death. Astrologers should make a careful study of the horoscope, first of all the category of longevity should be fixed and then by study of maraka dasas should predict with 100% caution. r

Determination of Directions Prashant Manda, Ahmednagar Chapter AIFAS

Solar System and the Earth in Solar System: Before studying and researching on Vastu Shastra it is very important to know about our Planetary System where we are living and all things around us. We live on Earth. Please see the Figure 1.1.

The axis of rotation is tilted at an angle 66째.60' to the plane of the elliptic path of the Earth around the Sun. When extended it should meet the surface of a fictitious Earth Globe, since the Polaris (Dhruv) appears to be fixed in the Sky. A star revolves around it. The True North is well defined. Please see the Figure 1.2 & 1.3. Magnetic North Geographical North Vertical Axis

Figure 1.1 Our Solar System and the Earth

The above figure shows that Sun is at the Center and planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto move around the Sun, at the moving time they also rotate around their axis. Our planet Earth is third from the Sun. We are living on Northern Hemisphere of the Earth.

Geographic North

Before entering the subject we must see what are the North Pole and South Pole, what are Magnetic North Pole and Magnetic South Pole. The Earth is like a globe. In Vastu Shastra it is very important to know the directions.

Magnetic meridian

What is True North: The Earth is rotating about an axis that cuts the globe at two points, we shall call these two points as the True North Pole and True South Pole.

a True North and South Poles are defined as the point where the axis cuts the Earth. Today this axis of rotation of the Earth is pointed towards polaris, in 3000 BCE it pointed to Tuban, in 14000 CE it will point towards Vega, in 22800 CE it will be pointed again towards Tuban. Please see the Tuban 3000 B.C

effect like Electric Motor and this effect generates Magnetic Fields. Scientists call this as Hydro Magnetic Dynamo Effect. These invisible geomagnetic lines stretch from one pole and out into space, then come back to the opposite pole. This lines appears like a wire frame. Please see the Figure 1.5, 1.6 & 1.7.

Figure 1.4 Earth Axis Towards Polaris, Tuban and Vega

Figure 1.4 From this we can see that there is actually no such thing as the True North, it changes with time. For this reason we shall take Astronomical North instead of True North.

Figure 1.5 The Earth Consists of the Solid Inner Hot Core

The question is that while measuring the directions in Vastu Shastra, should the Astronomical North or True North be taken as reference? We know that the Astronomical North is not fixed but keeps changing from time to time. In map we use what is known as Grid North. The difference between Astronomical North and Grid North is about half a degree but this changes slowly with time. For surveying purpose Grid North is used. How the Magnetic Field is Created: The Earth consists of a solid inner hot core. This solid core is as hot as the surface of Sun and its size is about 80% of the moon. It is completely surrounded by a fluid outer core consisting of melting iron. The speed of rotation is 0.2 % faster than Earth. This friction creates the dynamo

a However the magnetic needle doesn’t measures the Sun's Pattern, it measures Earth's Magnetic Force. The magnetic needle is further more not used in Vastu Shastra to measure apparent seasons or any climatic features. Now the Magnetic North is near the Canada as shown in Figure 1.8.

Figure 1.7 Waves of Magnetic Field

What is Magnetic North: Planet Earth produces Magnetic Field. We need first distinguish between Geographical North and Magnetic North Pole. We need also distinguish between Geographical South Pole and the Magnetic South Pole. Magnetic North Pole is near the Geographical South Pole, Magnetic South Pole is near the Geographical North Pole. Please see the Figure 1.3. Whether I am on North Pole or South Pole it will not affect my compass. The Earth's magnetism is caused by the flow of Electrons In its fluid metallic core, the fluid comes in perpetual motion that’s why the earth magnetism varies with time. The move is quite gradual. Thus the Earth may be visualized as a huge magnet. Magnetic poles moving, the change in the location of the Magnetic North is known as Secular Variation. It is important to note that, the location of Magnetic North Pole is affected also by Astronomical Factors. This affects the magnetic compass reading. We measure our planet's magnetic field (North) by means of magnetic needle. The source of this magnetic field is at the Magnetic South Pole produced by the planet Earth near the Geographical North. All our studies are based on longitude rather that latitude. Planet Earth produces several poles, the most important being near the Geographical South Pole and North Pole. Before the magnetic needle came into use, the Sun and the Pole Star were used to determine the directions.

If in Vastu Shastra we were to measure True North we would not be measuring any source of Magnetic Energy. Also if we were to measure True North, rather than Magnetic North, we would Figure 1.8 separate the magnetic field of our human bodies from the magnetic effects of Magnetic North. In Vastu Shastra studies we do not bother about the Solar Storm, what is happening on the other planets, birth and death of the stars. The most important energies of the Earth are 1) Gravity 2) Magnetism 3) Solar Energy. Gravity is directed towards the center of the Earth. This property is the most important character of the Earth Planet. While taking directions and drawing it on a plane, we have to consider the center of the house called as Centriod. Stand on this center of this house and we will observe all directions around the house for studies. r

Physical features like Sun’s or Topographical Structures can also be used to determine directions but in Vastu Shastra these do not determine the House Chart, which is always determined by the magnetic orientation.
