ORIGIN ACOUSTICS, BOOTH 5006 Architectural audio manufacturer Origin Acoustics came to CEDIA Expo this year with the news that it had acquired Ambisonic Systems, manufacturer of performance luxury Pro and Residential loudspeaker systems. Other Origin news includes the launch of the AS51SYS, an Acoustic Landscape 3-channel AS51 system that includes bigger satellite speakers, a more powerful subwoofer and a dedicated DSP amplifier.

CEDIA Keynote: Catering to the Individual

By Grant Morgan “We each have unique experiences of the world. It’s a beautiful part of being human,” said Dr. Poppy Crum in the CEDIA Expo 2021 keynote address on Thursday. “But at the same time, we build one-size-fits-all technology that assumes we’re all the same.

Now there’s a big gap between knowing what someone is experiencing and how we build technology that taps into that and supports every one of us in those ways.”

Technology has been stuck in a legacy pattern for the past 50 years and is delivered on the assumption that we’re all the same, perhaps because of cost efficiencies or the inability to scale production. Thanks to the continuing evolution of technology and the introduction and improvement in AI and machine learning, however, we can now “build technology for individuals, and think about the intent of the technology rather than how a technology works,” she said.

“Are we capturing the right dimensions to preserve and transmit the intent of the creator?” Crum asked. This is the challenge that integrators, installers, creators and designers face with each project, and while the limits of technology have always been a concern or stumbling block, Crum conveyed her

hope that emerging technologies will be able to close the loop between us and the environments where we tell and consume our stories.

“Technology, meaning the amalgamation of sensors in our environment, paired with machine learning and artificial intelligence has rapidly changed how much our technology can know about us, or knows with us. Which also changes how it can support us,” Crum explained when addressing how the rapidly advancing technologies of speech recognition and user biometric data can converge with existing environments.

The evolution of technology is critical to creating environments that not only serve a purpose, but become part of the connected home, office or space.

“Devices will know more about us than we do,” she said in addressing concerns about developing technologies being used in unethical ways.

“Any time you build the plane, you’re also going to have the plane crashes, but there are so many opportunities for us to grow and change as we build that infrastructure,” Crum added. “When convenience, new capability and accessibility are on the table, these things come together and we go with it because we see the future. We see new directions and opportunities.”

“One-size-fits-all technology will be a thing of the past,” said Crum. “Transformations in technology have allowed us to completely rethink what it means for individuals to have a successful experience. And it’s those advancements that are starting to transform how we think about creative intent and the technology capabilities that we bring to everybody in our environments.”

CEDIA Partners on Multinational Market Survey with Ancrage Consulting Launches Integrated Home Market Analysis 2021–Powered by CEDIA

Integrators have been asked to respond to this concise yet in-depth survey, sharing their most frequently provided integrator service types, favored brands, sales volume, and the financial value of the work completed. Respondents will look at their business from the last 12 months and provide projections of the amount they expect to conduct over the course of the next 12 months. Market research also explores multiple categories, brand preferences and

Pros Reunite at the Women in Consumer Technology Luncheon Women in Consumer Technology (WiCT) founder Carol Campbell opened the 13th annual WiCT luncheon at CEDIA Expo on Sept. 2 to a nearly packed ballroom.

“Today is about you sharing your stories and what have you done through this Carol Campbell crazy period—not just in your career but in life,” she said. “We’ll keep the Bellini and bloody mary bar open throughout the luncheon.”

And that’s exactly what the room full of industry women and men gathered to do: network and share stories.

Tammy Fuqua of Control Concepts was attending her first CEDIA Expo. “Residential is becoming a larger market for us, so it’s important for us to get

to know those people in the market and learn more about the manufacturers.” Fuqua is very active in AVIXA’s Women’s Council and attended the WiTC to meet women on the residential side.

Christina Stroh, COO of Pearland, TX-based custom integration firm StroTek, jokes that her husband runs the wires and she runs the business. She is quick to say that as a homeowner, if she wants something changed in their home control system, she is more than capable of doing it herself because she’s a certified Control4 programmer.

‘Very Smooth’: ESS Embraces D-Tools Cloud BOOTH 4653 D-Tools is helping integration businesses thrive, thanks to the availability of several business and design management tools. And when I had to adjust my pricing to my distributor, we did not have to add anything. All the brands and suppliers were already represented. The process is very smooth. I have been really happy with this, relative to using a different AV proposal software where you have to manually enter all the parts and pricing descriptions by hand. This approach kills the whole flow of the process.”
