hen curating a new installation, there are plenty of options for buying pro AV products, but distribution might be the quickest and easiest way for integration firms to accomplish their goals. SCN chatted with integration firms and a few distributors to understand the advantages of going through distribution.
Making It Easy Building out a new project can be stressful, and distributors are here to make integrators’ lives easier. Small- to medium-sized integration firms may find working with distribution particularly helpful, according to Jeremy Caldera, CTS-D, CTS-I, senior vice president at Pearl Technologies. “Dealing with distributors instead of directly with manufacturers is often much easier. The majority of integration companies are not handling a large enough volume for some manufacturers to care about their specific needs. It is great to have someone to call who will listen to your concerns and assist with design, shipping, or availability issues.” Even larger integration firms, like Conference Technologies Inc. (CTI), can run into issues when they deal directly with manufacturers instead of working through distribution. Distribution can be particularly helpful when it comes to logistics, said Eric Snider, CTO, CTI. “Manufacturers typically make a [large] run of the product, then pause. We only need 10 at a time. Without distribution, we would have to buy large numbers and inventory them to have them available at the right time for our clients.” In these uncertain times, product availability, quantity, and price can make or break a job. “Distributors strategically partner with our organization on product and project registration, best negotiated pricing with the manufacturer, and up-to-date availability information to be better informed on general product selection during these crazy supply chain times,” said Michael Fornander, CEO, Neurilink. “As pricing continues to balloon, the right relationship with a distributor keeps our teams up to date on the latest cost increases or shipping changes that seem to be happening more regularly right now.” “Customers today demand more robust, immersive experiences,” added Sandi Stambaugh, vice
“The worst thing is having to email someone and wait for a price to come back. Having quick access to the best price, along with inventory and availability, is the key to being successful in this business.” —Jeremy Caldera 2 2

DISTRIBUTION INTEGRATION GUIDE
“Integrators know their customers’ business best. By working with a distributor, the integrator can focus on understanding what their customer truly needs and then bring in the distributor to build that comprehensive solution.” — Sandi Stambaugh president, product management, Synnex. “Distributors can provide an additional layer of support, expertise, and value-added resources beyond just the product, which integrators need to provide more comprehensive solutions.” Kris Begnaud, vice president of sales, Data Projections, agreed. “There are many types of projects in AV with multiple manufacturers represented on a bill of materials [BOM],” he said. “A distribution partner can help reduce the number of purchase orders [P.O.s] issued on a project, warehouse and palletize equipment, and provide training opportunities on anything from a specific manufacturer to industry best practices. As an AV integrator, we look to partner with a distributor who not only gives us the best pricing, but also offers the best programs, services, and overall support.” Value-added distributors like Synnex and Almo offer many benefits in addition to providing the right products at the right price. Synnex, for example, offers a free learning management system that allows customers to lean on the company for technology, vertical, and product application training via its Varnex Academy. Almo provides education through its E4 Experience in-person regional events and E4 Evolution (E4v) virtual events, which feature live educational courses worth valuable AVIXA renewal units that are applied toward maintaining CTS certification status.
us be competitive with the larger integration firms.” “Because distributors purchase products in bulk quantities, then store them in warehouses for easy shipping, that savings is often passed on to the integrator,” added Melody Craigmyle, vice president of marketing, Almo Corp. In addition to all of the previously discussed benefits, distribution firms aim to help integrators build and expand their businesses. “Adding additional technologies, expanding into new verticals, and other initiatives to grow your business can take a lot of time and require additional resources,” said Synnex’s Stambaugh. “Instead of building a new practice from scratch, integrators can lean on the distributor to help fill the gaps, whether it’s with a new product, service, or training—saving both time and money. Integrators know their customers’ business best. By working with a distributor, the integrator can focus on understanding what their customer truly needs and then bring in the distributor to build that comprehensive solution.”

Saving Time and Money Oftentimes, manufacturers discourage integration firms and end users from buying direct by offering little (or even no) discount on products, even when buying in large quantities. “In most cases, we save money buying through distribution,” said Pearl Technology’s Caldera. “It is a numbers game, and volume is king. Distributors are able to purchase and allocate so much product that they will often get much better rates from the manufacturers.” Caldera said that a distributor’s shipping and freight programs can also help lower costs. “Flat rates on displays or free freight for purchases over X amount of dollars can equal huge savings, which helps

INTEGRATION GUIDE DISTRIBUTION

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 customer portal. “Many of the distributors have user-friendly websites. This is key for allowing us quick turnaround on quotes and proposals to our clients,” said Caldera. “The worst thing is having to email someone and wait for a price to come back. Having quick access to the best price, along with inventory and availability, is the key to being successful in this business.” Neurilink’s Fornander agreed that having this data is critical to an integrator’s success, in addition to those same portals offering up-to-date tracking services. Many distributors offer additional services that are valuable to integrators including integration tech services, programming, and even digital signage content creation. And it’s not just run-of-the-mill content being offered; it’s quality content that will help engage customers. Almo’s Digital Signage Content Creation Services, for example, won a 2019 APEX Award— presented by the Digital Signage Federation—for its hospitality wayfinding project for The Housing Trust Group. Integrators will also want to take advantage of distributor tools to assist with claiming spiffs and rebate programs. As Data Projection’s Begnaud said, “Working with a good distribution partner can also result in saving money through various rebate programs.” And money saved is money earned.

Future-Forward Distributors have a privileged view of the entire pro AV ecosystem—and they’re more than willing to share that information with customers. Synnex, for example, offers its customers reporting tools that help them recognize business trends and growth opportunities. They also offer future-forward technologies that integrators want and need. “The best distributors are constantly evolving to meet the needs of the industry and the challenges of the world,” said Almo’s Craigmyle. She pointed to one of their emerging technologies as an example: Almo is the distributor of ARHT’s holographic telepresence technology, which enables professionals to beam lifelike images of themselves anywhere in the world for conferences, meetings, and events, which they say reduces the time and cost associated with business travel. With learning and work environments evolving at a rapid pace, it’s critical that distribution partners look into and then offer these new technologies to their customers. While the future is unknown, one thing is certain, according to Data Projection’s Begnaud: “Distributors have transformed into more of a partnership approach, expanding their offering to include much more than just products.”
“Integrators know their customers’ business best. By working with a distributor, the integrator can focus on understanding what their customer truly needs and then bring in the distributor to build that comprehensive solution.” —Sandi Stambaugh 20
