YOU CAN’T MISS RIGHT HERE — BREAKING NEWS, INDUSTRY TRENDS,
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW AT THE 2023 NAB SHOW.
CENTENNIAL MILESTONE EXPECTING SHOW GROWTH
Tools, Immersive Content and Data Power the Future of the Industry
NAB’s Brown expects more attendees this year as event celebrates 100th anniversary
By Mark J. Pescatore SYSTEM CONTRACTOR NEWSAs the National Association of Broadcasters celebrates the show’s 100th anniversary, it is hoping to build on last year’s momentum with nearly 1,200 exhibitors on the show floor. Chris Brown, executive vice president and managing director of NAB Global Connections and Events, shared his thoughts on last year’s return and what attendees can expect next week.
SCN: NAB Show’s 100th anniversary is quite the milestone. How will you celebrate at the show?
Chris Brown: As we commemorate 100 years since the first NAB Show in 1923, we are offering opportunities for attendees, exhibitors and other stakeholders to share their memories, engage online and onsite, and connect via a range of networking opportunities.
We launched a website that provides an interactive journey through NAB’s history with a timeline detailing landmark achievements, moments in broadcasting and at NAB Show, along with image galleries, broadcasters’ stories and a digital NAB Hall of Fame detailing radio and television legends inducted throughout the years.
We also kicked off “Share Your Story,” a community campaign, encouraging individuals to share
special memories, serendipitous moments, or remarkable stories about broadcasting and NAB Show. Additionally, we are planning registration incentives, contests, special events and activations, and recognitions of exceptional past NAB Show participation.
Above all, we are focused on creating a vibrant marketplace as well as programs and services that deliver substantial direct value to our community. This centennial year more than ever, we are striving to create meaningful connections that educate, spur innovation, facilitate partnerships and drive growth for the industry.
SCN: Like last year, the exhibit hall will open on a Sunday. What has been the reaction from attendees regarding the weekend start?
CB: Last year, we opened the show on Sunday for the first time, versus the traditional Monday opening, and we closed on Wednesday instead of Thursday. This was implemented to make participation easier for those involved in live and other studio production projects, as well as those who may find it difficult to get away during the week or want to minimize time away from work.
The feedback we received on this new schedule was overwhelmingly positive, and we think it will continue to help boost attendance and maximize exhibitors’ time with customers.
SCN: Every NAB Show has its own buzz. What do you expect to be the hot topics on the show floor this year?
CB: There are some unique developments impacting the media and entertainment business. On the broadcast side, for example, NextGen TV in the U.S. (ATSC 3.0) is steadily advancing as there are more stations, more receivers, more viewers and more new opportunities around better picture, sound and interactivity to drive engagement.
5G production techniques, particularly around live events, is another growth area, and when combined with cloud workflows, it borders on revolutionary in terms of how broadcasters can source, produce and publish their content.
And there is no doubt, streaming media — whether it be audio or video, ad supported or subscription, live or on-demand, via handheld remote or voice controlled — is an exciting and growing way broadcasters and media companies are reaching consumers.
On the production and post-production side, virtualiza-
tion and remote production tools continue to drive new dynamics, as do advances in VFX technology via game engine technology and exciting tools like “volume” screens. Another growing trend is the way that tools, traditionally leveraged exclusively for high-end cinema production, are now finding adoption with content creators across broadcast, enterprise, and more creative communities; this is a focus of our new CineCentral area on the show floor
There is a lot of buzz around generative AI, the Metaverse, Web3, AI, and data-driven personalization. Generative Ai appears to be a game-changer and the media space is likely to be one of the industries where it has the greatest impact.
And we certainly see data as a critical driver for the future. Data allows content creators to produce content that the consumer wants, and to serve it up when the consumer wants it. It allows broadcasters and other media players to target and contextualize advertising, so advertising becomes a more seamless part of the content experience. It is powering more efficient production and post-production workflows. Understanding the power of data and how it can be put to use now and in the future is what the Intelligent Content area at NAB Show is all about. l
THE BUSINESS OF BUSINESS
Business, Tech Leaders Converge at Devoncroft Executive Summit
Attendees will gain insight into topics, trends for the media industry
By Deborah D. McAdams NAB SHOW DAILYOnly one of the many confabs scheduled around NAB Show stands out for the way discussion topics are not pre-determined. At the Devoncroft Executive Summit, now in its 13th year and held April 15, the executives lead the conversation with their chief concerns and future perspective of the media business.
“We want to be covering the topics that are going to move the needle commercially for the industry over the next couple of years,” said Joe Zaller, founder of Devoncroft Partners, the San Diego market research firm and summit organizer. “We start with the people and go into the summit talking about what’s important to them.”
Zaller and Devoncroft princi-
pal analyst Josh Stinehour also go into the summit armed with an encyclopedia of market data. Their global Big Broadcast Survey taps 6,000 to 10,000 media executives worldwide for insight into trends, buying behavior, infrastructure plans, budgets and more.
“We use our ongoing industry research to drive the agenda,” Zaller said. “We want to make sure we’re discussing the most important business/commercial issues facing senior industry execs in the market at this time.
“There are no sales pitches. Just candid discussions about the business of the business. We think that people attending our summits expect to hear a different level of dialog compared to other events, and the speakers expect to be asked different, more busi-
ness and commercially focused questions.”
DRIVER’S SEAT
The people who will drive the summit agenda include Phil Wiser, executive vice president and chief technology officer at Paramount Global since 2019; and Rhonda Holt, chief technology officer at PBS, a role she took over two years ago.
Laura Dames, independent consultant and founder of LEDames LLC, is a veteran of Warner Bros. Discovery/Warner Media. She joins the summit along with SMPTE chief and Warner Bros.
Discovery’s Senior Vice President, Production Integration & Creative Technology Services Renard Jenkins. Also on hand are Mike Kralec, chief technology officer and senior vice president for Sinclair Broadcast Group; and Roman Mackiewicz, the chief information officer at Bloomberg Media Group.
Stinehour will kick off Saturday’s summit with the “Devoncroft State of the Industry” presentation. One particular trend that’s emerged is the economics of streaming video and how to make it profitable.
“The economics don’t work,” he said. “We have to rethink that entire model. We’ve seen that with ad-supported streaming.”
On the technology side of the business, many organizations have “focused on virtualizing,” Stinehour continued. “We’re at a point where we can look at what comes next. Several speakers are focused on the data coming out of those virtualized systems. We can start to automate, bring in AI, etc.”
Data available via virtualization also allows more informed interactions outside of the traditional media pipeline, with finance departments, for example. It helps pinpoint where to invest in the organization. Decision-makers have more information to solve problems.
“We’re in a world where you have to get back to organic investment,” Stinehour said. “I think most of the answers will
come back to the tech side of the industry. It’s a better investment than the content itself. The heroes are on the stage. It’s the tech people.” l
WORLDWIDE ANTICIPATION
The M&E Industry From Around the World Gathers in Vegas
International attendees and pavilion exhibitors find key advantages to attending NAB Show
By Terry Scutt NAB SHOW DAILYEach year members of the media and entertainment community from around the world make their way to Las Vegas for NAB Show, with 155 countries represented this year. More than 50 delegation groups, the most registered delegations NAB Show has every hosted, are scheduled to attend.
They join like-minded attendees to take advantage of the educational opportunities, to see and exhibit new industry technologies and products and to network with others.
“It’s really amazing to have all these wonderful brands in one place,” an attendee commented during last year’s show. “I’m from Columbia and we don’t have any-
thing like this in our country. We have to come here to buy.”
Another attendee said, “The most important thing for me is the learning and the [opportunity] to learn [about] new tools.”
International pavilions have always been an important component of the show. This year, attendees will find pavilions in three halls of the convention center. Great Britain will be in the North Hall; Korean Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and Wallonia Export and Investment Office from Belgium will be set up in Central Hall; and Business France, the Korea ICT Association (KICTA) and Bavarian Pavilion can be found in the West Hall.
A few of the international pavilion planners shared their thoughts and plans on the upcoming show.
GREAT BRITAIN
Great Britain Pavilion organizer Mark Birchall said, “Tradefair has been organizing the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Pavilion at NAB Show since 2002.”
When asked what brings them to the show, Birchall said, “[It] offers the perfect platform for the U.K.,’s media tech companies to meet prospective new customers, launch new products, raise brand awareness, meet existing clients, network and see the latest industry trends.”
Birchall said the exhibitors in the Great Britain Pavilion will feature workflow software and solutions, AI-enabled video production, live video production in the cloud, intelligent-linking batteries for broadcast cameras and accessories. Attendees will also find cloud-native production and distribution, FM
transmitters with DDS modulation technology, lip sync and latency technology and a virtual production studio.
WALLONIA EXPORT AND INVESTMENT OFFICE
“Belgium’s first exhibition at the NAB Show dates from 2006, and we’ve participated in each edition since,” said Eric Dauchy, public relations manager for the Belgium Pavilion.
Dauchy said they have two main objectives for the pavilion: “To give European technology companies a platform to connect with the U.S. market … and to promote Belgium as a part of Europe where high-tech is in our DNA — where our companies work with the best and the brightest in the U.S. industry.”
Convention-goers will find a variety of offerings that include IT security applications, consulting and operational services for major events such as the World Cup, collaboration platforms for editorial and production teams, image processing technologies, a 2D/3D animation studio, M&E staffing platforms and broadcast and cinema camera systems.
KOTRA
The KOTRA Pavilion celebrates its 20th year as a show participant.
“Korean broadcast technology has gained a reputation for being highly innovative, reliable and of excellent quality,” pavilion planner Alex Kim said. “NAB Show offers great show experiences, and the opportunity to generate new leads, establish partnerships and network.”
Kim said technologies and products being shown in the KOTRA Pavilion include “deep learning video, image processing technologies, streaming, transmitters, batteries, displays, lightings, etc.”
Visit the exhibitor floor overview map and select the hall from the drop-down menu. There is much to see at the international pavilions at the show. l

The Field Tracking tool allows any graphic to be placed and positioned under the players, in real time, and remain in that position during camera pans, tilts and zooms.
Fingerworks’ masking technology, which is also part of the Computer Vision software, eliminates all logos, markers, etc. and makes them a “virtual” part of the imagery under the players. Fingerworks Computer Vision also automatically detects scene changes such as fast camera moves and camera switches and clears the tools.

The NAB Show Daily Through the Years
Just as NAB Show has changed over 100 years, so, too, has the NAB Show Daily. Although the official show publication hasn’t been around quite as long as the show.
The NAB Show Daily began as a daily issue, followed by a few years where there were both morning and afternoon dailies. Then along came a digital preshow edition and a post-show highlights issue.
The issue covers have changed, too. In earlier years one article started on the cover, which changed to three articles, to the current version, which has no articles on the cover at all.
With a redesign in 2020 during the pandemic, the NAB Show Daily was resized to its current magazine size with shorter, quick-read articles covering industry trends, show happenings and, of course, the exhibitors on the show floor.
Make sure to pick up your official NAB Show Daily each day, Sunday through Tuesday, on the hotel shuttle busses, or at the convention center from the magazine bins or our NAB Show Daily distribution team sponsored by Dejero. l
