LAST YEAR, the Digital Signage Best Practices Guide explored how increasingly affordable dvLED technology has brought digital signage to organizations of all shapes and sizes. As an extension of that newfound accessibility, end users are now looking to connect with audiences in novel ways while also safeguarding their investments long term. As a result, the digital signage making an impact this year goes beyond the aesthetic; it is both practical and protected.

In the 2024 Guide, we’ve called upon industry experts to discuss key considerations for successful indoor and outdoor digital signage installations, how innovative display mounts can both support and enhance the design of your project, what decision makers should bear in mind when planning for their next purchases, and how digital signage can inject meaning into K-12 communications.

Once again, we’ll then look at the wide array of display, mount, and content management products making waves right now. And finally, a small, yet diverse selection of case studies highlight the understated “unsung heroes” of digital signage—from ceiling-mounted menu boards at a craft coffee roaster, to state-of-the-art weatherproof display cabinets designed to keep the elements out while maintaining touch screen capability; from digital signage software simplifying content creation and management across a college campus, to the securely mounted informational signage keeping travelers moving through a busy airport.

One of our contributors wrote, “Displays will always take center stage as the visual storytellers.” Well, this year, the behind-the-scenes elements of digital signage finally step into the spotlight.

DIGITAL SIGNAGE CONTINUES TO OUTPERFORM PRO AV INDUSTRY

As recently as 2022, industry experts reported that digital signage was slightly underperforming when compared to the overall Pro AV industry. But these days, digital signage is outperforming the field, according to Sean Wargo, AVIXA’s vice president of market insight. As explained in AVIXA’s 2023 Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA), digital signage is currently a $39.7 billion solution area, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.2 percent.

According to a June 2023 report published by MarketsandMarkets, which focuses on B2B research, the global digital signage market should reach $26.1 billion by 2028, up from $18.7 billion in 2023, with a CAGR of 6.9 percent. While North America had the highest market share in 2022, research indicates the Asia Pacific (APAC) market will be the top digital signage market by 2028. Wargo said conferencing and collaboration is the largest Pro AV area of spend globally, but digital signage is in the top three—and is currently tops in APAC.

The International Market Analysis Research and Consulting (IMARC) Group has its own numbers, which are also encouraging. According to IMARC’s most recent report, the global digital signage market hit $26.9 billion last year and is expected to reach $45.5 billion by 2032, with a CAGR of 5.8 percent during that stretch.

OPTIMISM BEYOND THE NUMBERS

IMARC noted the global market is growing because of Digital-Out-OfHome (DOOH) advertising, improved display technology, and increased interest in customized customer interactions and data collection. Its findings show that “the rise of the internet and cloud-based content

management systems has revolutionized the market.” For its research, IMARC divides the digital signage market into three segments—hardware, software, and service—with hardware clearly the dominant segment.

Of course, methodologies vary, so estimates vary, but researchers seem universally convinced that digital signage is a healthy, growing segment of Pro AV. It’s not just the researchers; manufacturers are also bullish on digital signage possibilities.

At ISE 2024 in Barcelona, Steve Durkee, chief executive officer of BrightSign, sensed more optimism in the Pro AV industry, digital signage in particular. His company, known for its digital media players, is now focused on solutions, specifically on “experiences we can create and problems we can solve.”

To that end, BrightSign announced Bright Alliance, a comprehensive

global support effort for its content management system (CMS) partners, at the show. Bright Alliance offers technical assistance, training, and other resources to help integrate and support BrightSign products in digital signage deployments for various vertical markets.

Durkee said he is having a lot more discussions about interactivity and immersion for digital signage installations, with the ultimate goal of delivering personalized experiences. “The sophistication is going to increase,” he added. “You can see that trend for sure.”

TESTING AND EXPANDING BOUNDARIES

Look for increased deployments of digital signage in the industrial sector that can not only improve communication, but safety and productivity, too. According to MarketsandMarkets: “Digital signage

DIGITAL SIGNAGE INDUSTRY SNAPSHOT [8] DIGITAL SIGNAGE BEST PRACTICES GUIDE 2024
According to Wargo, digital signage supports how hospitality and transportation need to interact with their customers, particularly with respect to wayfinding. Quick-serve restaurants will continue to adopt digital menu boards, which allow for easy communication of upsell opportunities, pricing flexibility, and clarity of offerings. Mark J. Pescatore is the content director for Systems Contractor News (SCN).

also improves operational efficiency, reduces errors, and streamlines logistics processes. The growing adoption of digital signage in the industrial sector is expected to create growth opportunities for market players.”

IMARC identified retail as exhibiting a “clear dominance in the market.” While AVIXA doesn’t generally separate data by market, Wargo said it’s safe to say retail will continue to see the lion’s share of digital signage purchases.

“Customers are spending,” he explained, “even in the face of inflation and interest rates. “Shoppers are trying to find the products they are looking for. Digital signage helps them do that.”

digital menu boards are an area poised for big growth. CapEx costs are always challenging, but Wargo said it makes sense to deploy digital menu board systems for upsell opportunities, pricing flexibility, and clarity of offerings. “And the prices are conducive, too,” he added.

That said, Wargo also offered a caveat: Components have to be put together the right way. Doit-yourself digital menu boards could underperform for businesses. The integrator channel can benefit from a managed services offering to help QSRs use digital menu boards more effectively and avoid the pitfalls of poorly designed systems.

Digital signage is also finding success in markets like hospitality and transportation, helping with wayfinding and other information. “It fits and supports the core purposes of those markets and how they need to communicate with their customers,” Wargo added.

For quick-serve restaurants (QSRs),

Speaking of managed services, this potential revenue stream for integrators is growing faster in digital signage than in any other service area, according to Wargo. Customers can benefit from remote monitoring and content updates, as well as potential equipment leasing and maintenance programs.

The digital signage market also continues to test—and expand—its boundaries. For example, Wargo mentioned the “wrap effect,” where the surface of a structure becomes the sign itself. You can see those types of installations on office buildings and even Sphere in Las Vegas, where the entire exterior of the building can be used for digital signage. “Sphere does that in the biggest, most grand way,” he noted. “To me, that is cool and exciting, pushing boundaries and frontiers.”

MARKETS “TAKING A BREATHER”

However, not every digital signage vertical market is thriving equally. While digital signage can be part of improving the work experience and return-to-office efforts, Wargo noted that enterprise and higher education are “taking a breather.” During the pandemic, these markets made significant investments that cut across solution areas, not just conferencing and collaboration technologies. Spending has slowed down in these areas, but Wargo expects increased activity when inflation comes down and recession fears recede.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL DVLED INSTALLATION

Direct-view LED (dvLED) video walls are integral for systems integrators to drive engagement and bring top-notch content to life. As businesses and organizations increasingly turn to dvLED video walls to engage viewers and convey their message, understanding the best practices for installation becomes key.

Achieving impactful first impressions and seamless configurations is crucial, whether the installation is in an airport, hotel lobby, office building, restaurant, museum, or sports venue. These best practices and tips ensure a successful dvLED video wall installation each time.

PRE-INSTALLATION ASSESSMENT

Before diving into the installation process, conduct a thorough site survey to evaluate the space and identify potential challenges. This assessment will help determine the optimal size, configuration, and placement of the dvLED panels. Consider factors such as ambient light conditions, viewing distances and angles, electrical placement, room temperature, and structural integrity of the installation surface.

PRECISE MEASUREMENTS

Precise measurements simplify and

expedite the installation process and are essential to a seamless dvLED video wall installation. When taking these measurements, different factors like wall curvature, alignment, and mounting preferences (e.g., full wall, wall to floor, and ceiling) should all be considered to ensure a correct fit each time.

PREPARATIONS

Thorough preparation is key to a successful installation. Installers should anticipate setbacks, such as construction delays, and maintain open communication with the general contractor. While

no one can expect or plan for certain setbacks, it is important to have the flexibility to think and act quickly to pivot plans to make the deadline, update the installation plan, et cetera.

SAFETY

Adhere to regulations and relevant industry standards for dvLED installations to ensure compliance and safety. Engage with certified installers and follow manufacturer guidelines to mitigate risks and ensure optimal performance.

CONTENT STRATEGY

The content displayed on a video wall should align with its purpose. Whether conveying exhibit information in a museum or serving as a directory in a hotel lobby, the content should be impactful and easy to read. Keep the location, audience, and planned use of the video wall top of mind to ensure you are providing the best recommendations for the installation. Avoid overwhelming viewers with busy screens or excessive information, and ensure that any scrolling content provides ample time for viewers to absorb the information.

PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT

An important piece to the installation is on-site support from professionals, including AV designers and manufacturers. Peerless-AV has an experienced team of highly trained professionals who have overcome a variety of hurdles and can accurately troubleshoot any situation. DIGITAL SIGNAGE INJECTS MEANING INTO K-12 COMMUNICATIONS

The possibilities are endless as to how visual content and thoughtful messaging can create a sense of community inside schools.

Few audio-visual technologies have as broad of an appeal or variety of use cases as digital signage. Once primarily an informational tool for consumer-facing businesses, digital signage has found its way into nearly every public and private vertical. In retail, we now see grandiose video walls and ad-supported, multistore networks that combine visual appeal, marketing strategies, and data analytics to inspire shopping decisions. In corporate environments, businesses strategically deploy screens inside lobbies, meeting spaces, and adjacent to elevators to keep workers informed and reinforce a company’s corporate culture to create a feeling of togetherness.

The education vertical often combines many of the digital signage use cases referenced above to better unify a campus or school district. This is especially true in higher education, where universities deploy interactive wayfinding kiosks in heavy foot traffic areas outdoors; digital menu boards inside food service areas; and traditional displays across departments to share information about classes, curriculum, and events.

K-12 follows a similar blueprint, though with less technological expanse. However, K-12 schools have increasingly embraced digital signage as a way to communicate inspirational content and messages in thoughtful ways that bring out the best of this diverse medium.

Carousel Digital Signage has been working closely with K-12 school districts to implement digital signage since 1999. Along the way, we have learned how to help schools implement strategies that enable contributors of all skill levels, reduce burdens on IT teams, and strengthen a district’s connections with students and teachers. We are thrilled to share five simple and straightforward examples of how K-12 schools can make the most of their digital signage deployments.

SCHOOL SAFETY

There are many reasons why school safety is prioritized in K-12 districts today, from the typical to the unthinkable. A quality digital signage system enables simple connections to third-party data sources, such as emergency alerting and mass notification systems. The Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) is widely deployed today in K-12 and higher education systems to trigger real-time, campus-wide warnings about present or impending dangers. Digital signage is therefore the fastest and most efficient means of alerting entire buildings to seek shelter from severe weather, or enter lockdown mode if a suspicious person or vehicle is spotted on campus.

Additional toolsets exist to help schools reach students and teachers that are not presently nearby a digital signage display. Most digital signage vendors work in at least limited capacity with mobile device management companies (MDMs) that control, monitor, and secure computers, mobile devices, and digital signage displays. The combined capabilities of a compatible digital signage vendor and MDM can deploy Airplay Interrupt to override AirPlay for

important announcements and emergency notifications. Schools can then share accurate, real-time information by deploying digital signage onto iPads, iPhones, and desktop screen savers.

WELLNESS

The wellbeing of staff and students extends beyond school safety and crisis prevention. Using digital signage to promote positive messages will impact academic success, youth behavior, and student and teacher wellness.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has become a key initiative in many K-12 schools. While school safety and crisis prevention are important SEL components, SEL emphasizes the quality of the school experience. That means communicating self-regulation skills, coping strategies, mental health awareness, and support opportunities offered through the school.

Digital signage primarily remains a visual communications tool at its core, no matter the business vertical. In K-12 education, digital signage offers a perfect vehicle to share and reinforce the processes and procedures around teaching resilience, proactively sharing counselor

and hotline information, and creating a positive school climate where everyone feels safe.

Ease of use is also paramount to sending clear, concise messages that resonate in your hallways, offices, and cafeterias. Work with a digital signage system that will help your school get off the ground quickly, whether through customizable templates or working directly with a vendor’s creative services team to assist with content creation.

EQUITY AND INCLUSION

Compassion is essential to fostering a positive school environment, and digital signage offers an opportunity to promote a clear message of acceptance. Every student and teacher, regardless of lifestyle choices, economic status, and impairments, should feel as though they are equal parts of the school community. That means offering an education that creates and nurtures valuable experiences, lifelong friendships, and lasting memories.

Accessibility programs are paramount to ensuring that all students have access to the learning tools they require to succeed. For example, choose a vendor who can convert digital signage channels into alternative browsing experiences for visually impaired students, ensuring that every student can receive important learning content.

QR CODES

QR codes are ubiquitous today, from restaurant menus and retail couponing to self-help kiosks in hotels, healthcare facilities, and in-store environments. While some of us adults may groan at being forced to use them to scan menus, the youth of today have embraced and accepted this technology. Why not integrate QR codes into your digital signage program?

QR code generation is simple and free. When students view a campus directory, menu board, or bus schedule on a school’s digital signage network, they can trust that visible QR codes will allow them to take the information with them as they continue their journeys. For learning benefits, QR codes can provide easier access to videos and other course materials.

Fundraising opportunities are also made simpler, enabling parents and visitors to give without having to navigate

a website or fill out a form, which rarely ends well. There is also the green benefit of ditching paper for QR codes, reducing waste while creating a seamless experience for everyone.

DISTRICT-WIDE COMMUNICATIONS

Public school districts across the country have adopted digital signage for effective and efficient communications across entire districts. We work with large city school districts that have deployed digital signage in 20 or more schools, and we work with suburban and rural school districts that operate two or three schools.

No matter how expansive the operation, digital signage allows school districts or multi-building campuses to target messaging for the audience or age group of each building. Increasingly, districts provide access to many content contributors in each school to publish timely and relevant messaging unique to that building. Digital signage also provides IT and technology managers with the flexibility to prioritize and override local messaging for “global” district-wide messages of varied priority levels.

Many schools use slides to promote messages that ultimately lack brand

consistency or grow stale due to lack of scheduling abilities. Digital signage solves the problem through advanced content management and scheduling capabilities, and “smart” permission workflows based on contributor level.

Whether a single school, multi-building campus, or expansive school district, the power of consistent communications across your digital signage network ensures that everyone collectively sees information vital to their location. Digital signage has evolved as a technology to emphasize ease of use over technical prowess. It is easier than ever to get started, and easier than most anticipate when it comes to evolving your network’s content and capabilities.

As marketing director of Carousel Digital Signage, Amber Ward spends her days dreaming up strategies and telling stories that connect with people beyond the technology. With a background in art, film, and design, she brings her creativity and eye for detail into everything that she does.

BENT METAL BRILLIANCE: THE UNSEEN WONDERS OF AV MOUNTS

While displays themselves may steal the show, mounts involve a careful blend of design, engineering, and quality that collectively contribute to the success of a project.

[18] DIGITAL SIGNAGE BEST PRACTICES GUIDE 2024 THOUGHT LEADERSHIP: MOUNTS

As an audio-visual display mount manufacturer, it’s hard to sell the benefits of “bent metal,” as many like to call it. Last year we wrote a blog called the “Brains Behind the Beauty,” and let’s just put it out there: Displays are the “oh, shiny” most people see when it comes to digital signage. It’s the vibrant quality of the display or the dancing content that offer viewers the experience we seek to create. But while the displays themselves do play a pivotal role, the often-overlooked heroes are the mounts that support and showcase these technological marvels.

From the perspective of an AV mount manufacturer, the considerations for mounting displays go beyond mere functionality; they involve a careful blend of design, engineering, and quality that collectively contribute to the overall aesthetic and functional success of a project.

THE SILENT, UNSUNG HEROES

LED or flat panel displays will always take center stage as the visual storytellers. Take the acclaimed Las Vegas Sphere, where viewers are first awestruck by the architecture, and a close second is the ever-changing content that draws viewers’ attention. But, with the exception of perhaps a mount manufacturer, has anyone ever looked at the Sphere and thought, “That bent metal is beautiful”? Highly unlikely. What’s truly incredible, aside from the architecture and content, is the foundation and infrastructure it takes to create such a marvel. This is where the mounts step in, becoming the unsung heroes that

support and showcase the beauty of the displays.

Audio visual mounting solutions are like the silent architects of the technology world, quietly supporting and enhancing our experiences without ever stepping into the spotlight. It’s not uncommon for mounts to suffer from a lack of recognition—much like the unsung hero of a well-designed zipper, diligently connecting two sides of fabric without drawing attention to itself. We rarely acknowledge its presence, but life would be chaotic without its seamless contribution, holding things together with quiet efficiency. Audio visual mounting solutions, like zippers, deserve recognition for their silent but indispensable role in our daily lives.

FORM AND FUNCTION

Mounts possess unique talents of their own, with multiple layers contributing to their overall appeal. Being behind the scenes is their role, and one they were born to do. The fundamental question arises: Does the mount fulfill its primary function? In other words, does it securely and solidly attach the display to the wall, ceiling, or floor? This foundational aspect is paramount, as any compromise in stability can jeopardize the entire AV setup. Once this basic requirement is met, the mount ascends to the next level by integrating design aesthetics.

The design of a mount plays a crucial role in determining its visual appeal. Whether it needs to be flat, tilt, adjust, or extended, the quality in design is

what distinguishes a great mount from a mediocre one. The true talent lies not just in the functionality, but in how seamlessly the mount complements the overall aesthetics of the space. The sleek lines, innovative articulation, and overall form contribute to the visual allure of the mount, making it an integral part of the AV setup.

QUALITY MATERIALS, EFFICIENT INSTALLATION

Materials used in manufacturing further the talents of the mount. Highquality steel and precision engineering are essential elements that define the durability and reliability of the mount. The machining process must be executed with precision, ensuring seamless functionality. The surface finish, often achieved through powder coating, not only enhances the visual appeal but also contributes to the mount’s longevity, protecting it from environmental factors.

Efficiency in installation is another dimension that is a hidden talent of a mount. For a systems integrator, time is money, and a mount that is designed for quick and hassle-free installation becomes an asset. The ease of installation enhances the overall value proposition, making the mount not just a functional accessory but a time-saving and cost-effective solution.

AV mounts have many talents and serve a distinct purpose. Their success is rooted in the seamless combination of design, manufacturing precision, stringent quality control measures, versatile functionality, ease of installation and use, and competitive pricing. Beyond being “bent metal,” these mere support structures offer many benefits that go beyond the surface. As technology continues to evolve, appreciating the integral role of AV mounts becomes crucial in achieving a visually stunning AV experience.

As technology advances, so does the potential for creating impactful and engaging experiences in public spaces. This article explores the best practices and cutting-edge innovations that are reshaping outdoor digital signage, transforming urban environments into interactive hubs of information and entertainment. Below are current topics in the outdoor TV and outdoor digital signage industry and best practices to keep in mind.

THE RISE OF INTERACTIVITY

Creating engaging outdoor experiences goes beyond traditional static content. Interactivity is key to capturing the attention of passersby. Touchscreen displays, gesture recognition, and mobile integrations enable users to interact with the content, turning outdoor spaces into immersive and participatory environments. This shift toward interactivity enhances user engagement and provides valuable insights into audience behavior. Outdoor TV enclosures and outdoor digital signage enclosures such as The TV Shield PRO Touch are a popular solution for weatherproof interactive digital signage.

AI-POWERED CONTENT ADAPTATION

Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of outdoor digital signage. AI algorithms can analyze real-time data, including weather conditions, foot traffic, and user demographics, to dynamically adapt content. This level of personalization ensures that outdoor displays remain relevant and captivating, delivering content that resonates with the specific audience in a given context.

CONNECTIVITY AND SMART CITIES

The integration of outdoor digital signage into smart city initiatives is a game changer. Connected displays can dis-

seminate real-time information about public transportation, emergency alerts, and community events. This connectivity not only enhances the overall city experience, but also positions outdoor signage as a central component of the smart city infrastructure.

MOBILE INTEGRATION AND THE CONNECTED CONSUMER

The prevalence of smartphones provides a unique opportunity to integrate outdoor signage with mobile devices. QR codes, near-field communication (NFC), and augmented reality (AR) enable seamless interactions between outdoor displays and personal devices. This integration not only enhances user engagement but also opens up new possibilities for targeted marketing and data collection.

ENSURING RELIABILITY

Maintaining the reliability of outdoor digital signage requires remote management and maintenance capabilities. Cloud-based solutions allow for real-time monitoring, content updates, and troubleshooting, minimizing downtime and ensuring a seamless user experience. This level of control is crucial for large-scale deployments in urban environments.

PROTECTING TVS AND DIGITAL SIGNAGE IN HARSH ENVIRONMENTS

From menu boards and wayfinding, to advertising and more, digital signage

meets a variety of needs in indoor and outdoor environments. In most public spaces, these TV and display investments need to be protected. Whatever the threat, affordable indoor and outdoor TV enclosures and digital signage enclosures such as The TV Shield PRO or The Display Shield are popular solutions.

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF URBAN COMMUNICATION

As outdoor digital signage continues to evolve, its impact on urban spaces is becoming increasingly profound. By embracing cutting-edge technologies and best practices, stakeholders can transform public areas into dynamic hubs of information, entertainment, and engagement. As we look to the future, the integration of sustainable practices, advanced display technologies, interactivity, and connectivity will play a pivotal role in shaping the outdoor digital signage landscape and enhancing the overall urban experience.

VIDEO WALL MOUNT SUPPORTS THE WORKPLACE OF THE FUTURE

When AVI-SPL opened a Dallas office in 2022, the new location’s team wanted to create a design that reflected a workplace of the future based on collaboration and hybrid work. The global digital workplace services provider placed AV and UC solutions throughout its space to showcase each device’s versatility to clients.

To cap off their workspace experience with another top-of-the-line digital display that would “wow” clients and employees passing by their showroom, AVI-SPL approached technology partner Nanolumens. The Nanolumens Engage 0.93mm pixel pitch direct-view LED (dvLED) 4K resolution display, donated by the manufacturer, includes thin, stackable, 16:9 display cabinets that are front or rear serviceable, lightweight, energy efficient, and eliminate dangling cables with simple snap-in and snap-out connectors. Together, the screen cabinets create a smooth, bezel-less surface of crisp and clear visuals, with deep contrast, vivid colors, and high brightness.

However, integration would stall when AVI-SPL and Nanolumens discovered the showroom wall could not securely support the dvLED display independently. Both AVI-SPL and Nanolumens began searching for wall mount options following multiple attempts to attach the cabinets directly to the showroom wall.

When AVI-SPL’s Erich Schriefer and team sought help from partner Chief, Legrand | AV proposed using the Chief TiLED video wall mounting system to support the Nanolumens display.

“Nanolumens had recently used the Chief TiLED mount as a prototype for their wall,” Schriefer said. “It was so successful that they collaborated with us to provide this mount when our need for a flexible, clean, and perfectly aligned solution was spotlighted.”

Chief’s TiLED mount enables precise adjustment and control, ensuring perfect display LED positioning and cabinet-tocabinet alignment, and compensates for surface imperfections. “The Chief TiLED mount adjusts the X, Y, and Z axes, enhancing the visual experience with the Nanolumens 0.9mm pitch, which is a very fine pitch with little room for error,” Derek McCluskey, regional brand

sales manager for Legrand | AV said. “If any of those panels are even slightly misaligned, there could be seams or cracks that could degrade the display’s resolution. With the TiLED mount, we can ensure the finest resolution a Nanolumens panel can feature.”

A display of this type usually takes about three days to install. With the Chief TiLED mount in place, Nanolumens installed the dvLED video wall in just nine hours. “Being the first of its kind, the installation process was very smooth, which is representative of the highestquality expectations that Chief and Nanolumens always demonstrate,” AVISPL installation manager Don Clarke said.

The ease of this display’s integration and additional installs led Nanolumens to name the Chief TiLED mount an essential Engage display install component. “Chief mounts are integral due to the tight tolerances of the 0.93 mm display,” Geoffrey Berkeley, Nanolumens regional sales director said.

AVI-SPL Dallas hosts a diverse set of audio visual technologies, and the Nanolumens dvLED video wall is one that AVI-SPL Dallas’ general manager Cory Van Kleeck is proud to feature. “We welcome prospects, clients, architects, consultants, and general contractor partners regularly for technology tours of our Dallas showroom,” Van Kleek said. “The Nanolumens wall is the seventh video wall they see in our space, and it is incredibly well received for its clarity, brightness, and cutting-edge brilliant technology. The unit sells itself.”

The display has also had significant positive impacts on the AVI-SPL Dallas employee work experience. “The addition of the Nanolumens and Chief products beautifully finished out what is now our largest assembly area in the Dallas office. We host quarterly town hall meetings here. Recently, an international team of 100-plus from our Global Strategic Accounts Program gathered in Dallas, using this incredible space for their technology needs.”

And AVI-SPL is not the only organization happy with the results. “It was great working with AVI-SPL and Chief to bring our Engage Series 0.93mm 4K resolution display to life. I am thrilled to have such an amazing display for AVI-SPL to show off to their clients and stakeholders,” Nanolumens’ Geoff Berkeley said.

CRAFTING COFFEE AND A SEAMLESS DISPLAY EXPERIENCE

A convenience store in Oklahoma called Roasters Market offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with craft coffee beverages and smoothies. Roasters is a unique player in the coffee industry, setting itself apart by venturing into building native coffee brands rather than following the franchise model. The company is currently in the process of establishing proof of concepts for its innovative approach. The goal for Roasters is to expand into convenience stores and mid-market chains, providing a seamless coffee experience for customers, whether they are inside the store or going through the drive-thru.

Part of Roasters Coffee’s marketing strategy involves the effective use of digital signage, as the company recognizes the importance of leveraging technology to enhance the customer experience and convey its brand message, while also laying the groundwork for future collaborations with other consumer operators. They worked with the digital signage pros at Coffman Media to create indoor and outdoor digital menu boards to promote their offerings and drive brand awareness at a newly opened location.

Upon arrival at the site, the Coffman Media team discovered discrepancies in the readiness of essential elements, such as cables and power supply. The information relayed to the general contractor regarding the preparedness of these crucial components was not accurate. This unexpected hurdle posed a potential threat to meeting the project’s three-

month turnaround time. Despite the challenges, the team quickly mobilized to address the issues at hand. Clear and transparent communication became paramount in navigating through the complexities of the project.

Quick-service restaurants (QSRs) such as Roasters often opt for commercial LCD displays from brands like LG because they offer durability, reliability, visibility, customization, and the support needed in a commercial restaurant environment. The LG displays selected are engineered for 24/7 operation and use in harsh environments where steam, heat, grease, and airborne particulates are present.

As a Certified Platinum Partner with Signagelive, Coffman Media tapped them to deploy their cloud-based, enter-

prise-level software to showcase their menu offerings. In QSRs, speed and accuracy are paramount. When customers can clearly see bright, well-organized menus and promotional content, along with high-resolution images of the food items, they can more easily make their decisions on the spot. This helps keep lines moving so customers can get their orders quicker, enjoy their meal, and get back to their day. Signagelive also helps in perceived wait time by displaying entertaining content, such as video clips; customers are given something to do while they wait in line or at the table.

Crimson AV provided the ceiling-mounted menu board solutions. Crimson’s CMKIT’s were used to provide an in-line multi-display menu board with a single pipe dropped from the ceiling. These Kits can hold displays up to 75 inches, and can be scaled to hold as many displays as needed. Aligning multiple monitors can be challenging, but the Crimson in-line system features independent vertical and roll adjustments, unlimited lateral shift, and easy tilt adjustment, all of which simplify this process and reduce installation time.

And finally, Palmer Digital Group provided the outdoor drive-thru pedestal mount menu boards. Dine-in, carry-out and drive-thru customers are drawn to compelling visual content, from up-todate calorie counts to dynamic fade transitions between promotional menu items. The displays are enclosed and protected from the elements and integrate seamlessly.

The selected commercial LCD displays are engineered for 24/7 operation and  use in harsh environments where steam, heat, grease, and airborne particulates are present.

CAMPUS DIGITAL SIGNAGE FLIPS THE SCRIPT

Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Western Colorado University’s nearly 3,000 students—and the AV/IT team on campus—had long experienced mixed results with digital signage as a communications and advertising medium. While there was a strong motivation to use digital signage to promote events, news, and other campus information, its success was hindered by a tough learning curve and a high-maintenance, pointbased server infrastructure.

The tide shifted when James Young took charge of the IT team’s AV responsibilities and learned that there was an opportunity to take the initiative in a new direction. “We have 10 buildings on campus that serve different functions, and one of my goals was to help these various departments cross-promote their events,” Young, AV manager for IT Services said. “That’s hard to do when people are just advertising functions in their specific buildings, made more frustrating by the presence of dark TV displays across campus.”

Young discovered the story behind why the TVs remained dark, and discovered it was the classic story of choosing the wrong digital signage software. It wasn’t

long before he was in discussions with Carousel Digital Signage to change the conversation about digital signage on the campus, choosing Carousel Cloud to both streamline the network infrastructure and simplify content creation and management. Western Colorado University has, to date, lit up 15 screens with lively, up-to-date content, and has the intention of doubling that number in time for the Spring 2025 semester. People have already noticed the difference.

“We have received positive feedback from faculty, and we see students regularly watching the screens inside the lounges,” Young said. “What’s perhaps most interesting is that we have integrated Carousel into our Board of Trustees meetings. I bring an Apple TV into the board room and show Carousel content on screen before presentations and discussions commence. We are advertising key events that are generating more traffic through campus-wide promotion. We just finished a promotion for an art gallery exhibit that ran several weeks, and we are seeing more contribution from various departments on campus.”

The flexibility and ease of use of Carousel Cloud software is a clear reason

for the network’s success to this point. Young likes the ease of building playlists and creating schedules, which makes it easy to establish campaign lengths. The network has also become something of a help desk by publishing a QR code for students and faculty to seek assistance from the IT department.

There is also the ability to have fun with the network. For example, Young runs Carousel content in the on-campus movie theater through the projector to promote upcoming events, such as athletics. Students are also encouraged to bring their printed flyers direct to Young, who adds them to the rotation through the duration of each event.

Young added that the rollout has been seamless and the learning curve is almost immediate. The former can be attributed to Carousel’s partner with Jamf, a mobile device management (MDM) firm that works with Carousel to convert Apple TV devices into media players and secure the devices to prevent network intrusions and content disruptions. “Carousel actually crossed our radar through a promotion from Jamf,” he said. “As Jamf manages our Apple products and we already had Apple TV devices, it made perfect sense. And operating our digital signage in the cloud makes it easy to manage the content and network from anywhere. It’s a completely different world from where we were before.”

LARGE-SCALE DVLEDS STREAMLINE AIRPORT TRAVEL

Peerless-AV, working alongside Absen and POP Media Technology (POP MT), has been completing a series of directview LED (dvLED) video wall installations at Monterrey International Airport in Apodaca, Nuevo León, Mexico. The installations are part of a remodeling project, taking place over several years, to transform the airport into a second international connection center alongside Mexico City.

Monterrey Airport terminals were originally renovated and expanded in 2003 and 2007, but have now begun additional renovations to offer an elevated experience for wayfinding and communication throughout the airport halls, terminals, and check-in points. Incorporating large dvLED video walls in various locations would allow for eye-catching, easily adaptable communication for travelers, even in the busiest areas of the airport.

Digital signage integrator POP Media Technology (POP MT), specializing in full integration services, as well as largescale and custom projects, was contracted for the installations. POP MT acted as the central point of contact for all involved parties and handled the design for each unique installation location, and Peerless-AV manufactured and supplied the SEAMLESS Kitted Series dvLED Mounting Systems to support the chosen Absen KL 2.5 LED Displays.

Many of the installations would be

placed high up, which meant fundamental safety plans were put in place, involving meticulously designed and engineered steel ceiling structures onto which the Peerless-AV mounts would be secured.

The installation began in November of 2022, with the first phase now complete and the second still in progress to yearend. The first phase included 18 installations. One 9-by-8 tile video wall (5.76m x 3.84m) was placed in the taxi area, and two back-to-back ceiling-mounted solutions were located at the airport terminal entrance. One 19-by-5 tile video wall

(12.16m x 2.4m) was placed in each main hall. Seven 2-by-2 tile landscape video walls (1.28m x .096m) were installed at the boarding gates and six 2-by-2 tile in portrait were incorporated into kiosks in the main halls to display flight information.

The second phase, still in progress, involves eight phenomenal, ultra-wide dvLED video wall installations at the airport’s check-in desks that will far exceed wow-factor expectations. Namely, two 42-by-4 tile (26.88m x 1.92m), two 45-by-4 tile (28.8m x 1.92m), and four 49-by-4 tile (31.36m x 1.92m). Additionally, three 9-by-8 tile video walls (5.76m x 3.84m) will be installed in the new entrance halls.

The SEAMLESS Kitted Series dvLED Mounting System allowed for a simple and efficient installation, while achieving a perfectly flat finish without seams. The mount’s lightweight frame, display adaptors, and industry-leading adjustment, especially on the Z-axis (depth), allowed for precise alignment of each cabinet without any complications.

“POP Media was very happy with the flexibility of the Peerless-AV team in their response to any last-minute changes,” Gabriel Lopez, POP MT sales director said. “Product availability, easy handling, and expert support really helped us deliver this successful, standout project that is still in progress and will be an exemplary reference point for our business in Mexico for many years to come.”

“Now with the introduction of the new SEAMLESS Kitted Series Universal dvLED Mounting System, stocking and shipping will be even easier as this solution is shipped in one box, facilitating a faster turnaround and shorter lead time to customers,” Carlos Rodriguez, Peerless-AV Latino America said. “The universal design removes the need for dedicated adaptors and also makes it far more reconfigurable to make changes on site, which is a huge help for the ongoing installations at the airport.”

The result is a flawless, seamless look. The Peerless-AV mounting system allowed each video wall to achieve a sleek finish, avoiding any visible lines. All displays in the first phase are operational, with mixed content of flight information and advertising wowing customers passing through the terminals and achieving the desired modernized look throughout the entire Monterrey International Airport.
