Digital Health Tech – Hospital to Home Digital health and wellness have long been a category to watch at CES, but nothing puts the importance of health into sharp relief quite like a global pandemic. Over the past year, health tech innovations have empowered consumers, making our personal health data more portable, accessible and affordable. Amid rising demand, health tech companies have expanded virtual care platforms and brought doctors into our homes, helping to overcome barriers to access. As longtime CES exhibitor and CTA member Philips puts it, the home is becoming an extended part of the hospital—and “there’s no better platform…for the sharing of experiences” that lead to innovation and ideas than CES. As the world continues to grapple with the pandemic, we’re excited to welcome Abbott President and CEO Robert Ford for the first keynote from a healthcare executive in CES history. He’ll share how Abbott’s digital health tech is empowering patients to take greater control of their health, with a particular focus on Abbott’s central role in developing easy and affordable COVID-19 testing. On the CES show floor, attendees can explore patient-first healthcare products and innovations to meet an ever-growing range of health needs—enhancing doctor-patient connectivity, data management and 24-7 care connections. Dassault Systèmes’ Medidata, which supported Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccination clinical trials, joins us in Las Vegas. CES 2021 Last Gadget Standing Winner Mojo Lens returns with the latest in its invisible computing, augmented reality contact lens, with a display the size of a single grain of sand. Omron Healthcare is exhibiting its blood pressure monitor and other digital tools to increase patient-physician communication, while OrCam will showcase its wearable visual assistance device, MyEye. And of course, we can’t forget fitness as a critical element of our health. At this evening’s invitation-only Leaders in Technology Dinner, Peloton CEO and Co-founder John Foley will share his thoughts on the explosive growth in at-home fitness, and how tech innovation is reshaping consumer preferences. His company joins dozens of CES exhibitors, including Hydrow—maker of connected rowing machines—WW (formerly Weight Watchers), and Amazon, who are using technology to inspire consumers to prioritize healthy habits. CES 2022 also will highlight the need for products and platforms focused on women’s health. Last year, in partnership with the World Bank Group, we launched the Global Women’s HealthTech Awards. In the months since, we’ve received an outpouring of interest from organizations and companies whose technologies address gaps in women’s healthcare and safety in emerging markets—over 70 applicants from 30 countries. Yesterday, we were thrilled to announce Niramai, Transmural Biotech, Antiva Biosciences, INNAccel and UE Lifesciences as the winners of our inaugural awards. Also at CES 2022: we’ll explore innovation around what fuels our bodies in our newest tech category— food tech. On the show floor, we’ll see technology that’s changing how and where food is grown, transported and prepared from exhibitors like South Korea’s Beyond Honeycomb, demonstrating AI-driven kitchen technology that can learn to make your favorite dish. We’ve partnered with The Spoon to produce today’s food tech conference program, which examines how technology is transforming food prep and storage, creating an e-agriculture movement, and supporting sustainability efforts to reduce food waste. Technology is life changing. Hospital or home care, palliative or preventative, food or fitness—tech innovation is transforming how we live, work, and play. And you’ll see all of the latest innovations here at CES 2022!

Sony Brings Star Power to CES BY JOHN SCIACCA For this year’s press conference, Sony made concessions to Covid by having far less seating, with chairs spaced out, and fewer people in attendance, but there is really nothing like the being-there excitement of hearing and seeing new product announcements and special guests! The event began with Kenichiro Yoshida, chairman, president and CEO of Sony taking the stage. Yoshida reaffirmed the importance of its purpose: to fill the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology. And Sony is looking to use new tools to get closer to people, including content creators and users. Sony established two major funds in 2020— one to support those affected by the global pandemic and another to help combat social injustice. Sony has given $100 million to both funds, and the company is driven to support communities in need, and to align with community partners to advance solutions in civic community engagement, criminal justice reform and access to education. The company is committed to helping communities around the world and that “all voices must be heard.” Sony also understands its technology and social platforms enable people to connect more deeply with those who share the same interests and allows them to form stronger bonds. Part of working on the content creation side during the pandemic meant getting creative, and Yoshida discussed Sony’s Virtual Production system. Part of Sony’s Innovation Studios has evolved to streamline workflow, using the company’s Crystal LED technology to deliver the creator’s intention by projecting bright images with high contrast and vivid colors, and using the company’s Venice 2 cameras for cutting-edge results and its Airpeak drone that enables video creators to explore new frontiers for expression. With these technologies, content creators can seamlessly shift from one place to another—from where they are to where they want to be. Yoshida said that with virtual production, drones, and smartphones, “Creativity has no limits.” Sony is involved in new forms of entertainment from games to movies, leveraging the company’s agility in shifting people to new contexts and new worlds. With that Yoshida introduced Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Tom Holland, star of the upcoming Uncharted film. (And the star energy from Holland filling the room is the reason why a virtual experi-

ence will never replace actually being there!) Holland admitted he is a huge gamer, and he started playing the Uncharted series during production on the first Spider-Man film. He played and fell in love with the game and the character and now he is getting to play Nathan Drake in Uncharted (with a February 18 release). Holland is looking to bring the character of Drake to life in a new and refreshing way, but keep what fans love about the character. He said he wants to give fans and people that love the game something new and refreshing to enjoy, while staying true to it. Holland then introduced a world-premiere clip from Uncharted that he claimed was the hardest action sequence he’s ever been involved with. Rothman said that Uncharted filmmakers worked closely with Sony’s PlayStation gaming division to ensure the film was accurate to the game. He then introduced Neil Druckman, co-president of Naughty Dog, creators of the Uncharted game franchise. Druckman said he is proud Nathan Drake is coming to the big screen to reconnect with existing fans and make new ones, and that Tom Holland honors Nathan Drake’s roots while bringing his own take to the character. Jim Ryan, head of Sony’s PlayStation Group, then took the stage to talk about PlayStation 5, which just passed the one-year mark in its lifecycle. Ryan praised the support of fans, developers, and publishing partners and announced there are now 17 studios in the PS family. They have already added new features to the PS5 such as 3D audio and SharePlay between PS5 and

PS4, and are adding a new tournament play feature. The big upcoming development for PS5 will be nextgen VR. Ryan claims this will provide the ultimate entertainment experience for players, and to support this he announced the new PlayStation VR2 headset and PlayStation VR2 Sense Controllers that will allow for deeper immersion into the game. With VR, Sony will bring the power of technology along with the creativity of developers to evoke a new range of emotions and deliver truly next-generation gaming experiences. With this will come new sensory features, enhanced controls tracking, and upgraded visual fidelity. Yoshida returned to the stage and discussed Sony moving towards the future. At CES 202 the company unveiled its prototype car, the VISIONS, with the goal of contributing to the evolution of mobility. Public excitement from the VISION-S encouraged Sony to “change the experience of moving from one place to another,” and with that a new VISION-S prototype SUV was revealed. Yoshida believes Sony is well positioned as a creative entertainment company to redefine mobility, and in line with that, the company has established Sony Mobility, Inc. to accelerate these efforts. The company is exploring a commercial launch of Sony’s EV, which will harness the potential of mobility utilizing Sony’s AI. While Sony has a slew of new display announcements planned for the show—including an entirely new lineup of flat panels—none of these products were discussed or presented during the event.

Panasonic Moves ‘Forever Forward’ at CES BY JOHN SCIACCA BOOTH N246 Panasonic’s CES theme for 2022 is “Forever Forward” and the company began its press presentation by discussing the impact it has on both people and the planet. Daily, more than 1 billion people around the world use Panasonic products, making Panasonic responsible for 1 percent of the world’s electricity consumption. This usage also contributes 110,000,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year—estimated to be more than 40 times greater than Panasonic’s factories produce when creating these products. The company realizes its impact is huge and so is its potential to contribute to a brighter future. This has led to the company’s Panasonic GREEN IMPACT initiative where it is committed to reducing CO2 emissions generated from its own business operations, as well as from its products being used, to be better for both people and the planet. This is in line

with Panasonic’s founding mission statement over 100 years ago where it was meant to empower people to live better lives and make the world a better place. Yuki Kusumi, Panasonic Group CEO, says the company is taking action to counteract the effects of climate change on the planet, and the company is committed to reducing the CO2 emissions of all operation companies to net zero by 2030. Panasonic will also reduce the environmental impact of its products being used by developing new technologies and solutions to increase their efficiency. Megan Myungwon Lee, chairwoman and CEO, Panasonic North America, interviewed Olympic champion and swimming legend Katie Ledecky on their collaboration with a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education program called STEM Forward. In partnership with Discovery Education, they expect to reach over 400,000 students in the U.S. in the next year alone,

connecting students in grades 3 through 8 to the game-changing power of technology at no cost. Next up was a discussion of Panasonic’s developments in automotive systems headed by Scott Kirchner, president, Panasonic Automotive Systems. Kirchner said driver and passenger safety is paramount and underpins everything Panasonic does. To go with this, the company announced its new Driveable AR HUD 2.0 with patented eyetracking system. The goal is for the car to have a true understanding of its surroundings and present that information to the driver in a simple understandable manner and increase the driver’s situational awareness. An AR camera in the HUD will see and track what the driver is looking at keeping images clear, sharp, and in focus and incorporating safety features like drowsiness detection. Panasonic saved all AV-related announcements until the end, when the company announced two Technics products, including EAH-A800 over-theear noise cancelling wireless headphones and the SA-C600 compact network CD receiver, part of the company’s new “Premium C600” series. This is an all-in-one solution that can connect to virtually any speaker, and features Space Tune to optimize the sound based on room acoustics. Finally, new for 2022 is the LZ2000, Panasonic’s Flagship OLED TV. Available in 55-, 65-, and 77-inch sizes, the display is tuned for superb color accuracy for highest quality film playback. The LZ2000 is also a gaming powerhouse with new game control overlay, Nvidia GPU detection, improved 60 Hz latency and HDMI 2.1 support for next-gen gaming consoles. The displays will also feature improved audio with a row of array speakers capable of delivering Dolby Atmos immersive audio and the ability to tune the sound to optimize playback for a single viewer or a group.

Qualcomm Bows Wider Snapdragon Auto, 5G, ARM PC, Meta Efforts BY STEWART WOLPIN BOOTH 5005 Looking to expand beyond its focus on smartphone SoCs, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon presented a broad Snapdragon “one technology roadmap” during the company’s CES press conference, an effort to diversity the company’s addressable markets. Amon laid out efforts based on the cloud-based “connected intelligent edge” concept with expanded efforts in four categories: “wireless fiber,” or last-mile 5G; next-gen ARM PCs powered by Snapdragon SoCs in partnership with Microsoft that converge PCs and mobile/5G for cloud computing; next-gen computing via the metaverse; and a Snapdragon ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) “digital chassis” platform. “We’re going to go into beyond mobile,” Amon confirmed. “We have an opportunity to serve a market of $700 billion as the connected intelligent edge gets scaled. We are becoming the partner of choice at the edge for digital transformation.” On the PC side, Amon noted the platform’s increasing compatibility with 64-bit ARM computing and announced a greater effort to bring 5G to nextgeneration ARM-based, Snapdragon-powered computers from Acer, Asus, HP, and Lenovo. Amon also announced it is developing a custom augmented reality chip integrating Microsoft Mesh with Snapdragon Space AR platforms that would be used in next-generation lightweight XR/ AR glasses.

CES22_d2_live.indd 14

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon

In “wireless fiber” 5G, Amon also announced a partnership with AT&T to expand 5G’s reach, especially mmWave 5G, beyond mobile to last-mile connectivity and WAN applications for homes and business to supplement or even replace Wi-Fi. Qualcomm’s most extensive Snapdragon expansion seems to be in automotive, to “redefine vehicles for the 21st century,” according to Amon. The company’s focus is to build an open, customizable and scalable Qualcomm Digital Chassis platform to support a wealth of connected and interconnected automotive functions. “Why not create a digital platform that can scale from entry level cars all the way to premium automobiles,” Amon explained.

“It’s about building a chassis with all of those systems being integrated for the digital cloud connected capabilities of the car. Qualcomm’s approach is a horizontal model that will allow every company to innovate and retain their innovation.” Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis ADAS platform includes Snapdragon Ride, a Ride Vision connected camera system, car-to-cloud, cockpit and connectivity components. Amon announced new deals with Volvo, which will be adding Digital Chassis to its upcoming all-electric SUV due later this year, extending its relationship with Honda for models available in H2 2022 in the U.S. and next year globally, and a new partnership with Renault.

GM’s Barra: “Make No Mistake. This is a Movement” BY GRANT MORGAN Joining CES 2022 virtually from Detroit, Michigan, General Motors (GM) CEO Mary Barra’s keynote address showcased the incredible electric vehicle (EV) efforts and innovations GM has made since its last announcements at CES 2021. Headlining the GM announcements for 2022 was the highly anticipated Chevrolet Silverado EV truck, which boasts an impressive estimated range of 400 miles with a full charge. GM plans to release several variants of the Silverado EV, beginning with a work truck (WT) with pricing starting at $39,900, and a higher-end RST model starting at $105,000 in late 2023. “We’ve created a truck that is more than just an electric truck. This is a purpose-built Chevrolet Silverado EV,” Barra said before turning the presentation over to Nichole Kraatz, chief engineer for the Silverado EV, and Ryan Vaughn, Silverado EV design director.

As previously announced, GM plans to have all-new light-duty vehicles to be electric by 2035, and Barra announced in her keynote that GM also plans to have all-electric heavy-duty vehicles on that same timetable. Good news for consumers and company fleets looking to make the switch to allelectric in the coming decades. “We are expanding our position in autonomous driving and electric vehicles, and we intend to lead in both,” said Barra as she announced GM’s continuing investment in its dedicated all-electric vehicle platform, Ultium. The Ultium platform has scale and flexibility and is designed to give GM’s EV customers longer range and faster charging times at lower cost. It also gives GM’s designers and engineers the freedom to create vehicles they previously could only dream about. Ultium’s flexibility extends beyond cars, truck and crossovers, and Barra announced a collaboration to develop and commercialize Ultium bat-

tery technology and Hydrotec fuel cell systems for Wabtech Locomotives, along with an agreement with Liebherr Aerospace in France to explore the potential use of GM and Hydrotec’s technology as auxiliary power for future aircraft. “Why are we doing this?” asked Barra. “For me it comes down to this: Technology driven by purpose can change the world. GM’s Ultium platform means we no longer have to imagine a zero-emissions future, we’re building it. We can, we must, and we are. For everyone.”

TRENDS

What Tech Trends Will ‘Matter’ in 2022? WFH, smart health, food, 5G, AI, and sustainability all will be hot tech trends this year, but what might really matter most is Matter BY STEWART WOLPIN Thanks mostly to a carry-over of market conditions and market forces, most of the hottest tech in 2022 will be advances of the hottest tech of 2021. Thanks to the shift from forced to willing to desired remote work, work-from-home (WFH) tech will continue to expand, and smart health/fitness, bigger screen 4K and even 8K TVs, true wireless earbuds, wearables, food technologies, and software & services all will continue to be hot tech categories. Perhaps more importantly, some fundamental structural technologies will insinuate themselves more and more into new products and services. These include: • 5G: Both the number of 5G phones sold and 5G networks available are likely to top 50 percent in 2022, which will justify development and adoption in additional 5G applications and devices. “5G networks are expected to benefit industries in smart cities, infrastructure, education, and digital health,” notes Rick Kowalski, CTA director of industry analysis and business intelligence. • AI: Nearly every consumer technology product we’ll see in 2022 will be smarter, more intuitive, and perhaps even more conversational. “By adding artificial intelligence and machine learning to devices and attaching services to hardware in homes, companies extend monitoring capabilities to consumers beyond standard access points,” observes Elizabeth Parks, president of Parks Associates. “These new services add benefits of security, convenience, and information for consumers.” • Sustainability: Both governments and business are responding to consumer demand for more environmental responsibility, including how and of what materials devices are made, and how they’re packaged. “Consumer awareness is definitely rising in terms of supporting sustainable businesses,

especially among millennials/Gen Z and the affluent,” asserts Ross Rubin, principal analyst at Reticle Research. But no technology trend is newer for 2022, more anticipated, and more potentially impactful, than Matter.

DOES MATTER MATTER? Matter is a protocol created by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), formerly known the Zigbee Alliance, that would make all smart home devices, regardless of their walled ecosystem, interoperable. The concept is almost impossible to contemplate: Amazon, Apple, Google, and Samsung all deciding to play nice with each other. There is industry agreement that lack of interoperability is stalling consumer uptake of smart home devices. “The only thing that ‘matters’ is ease of use and interoperability,” insists Stephen Baker, NPD VP and industry advisor. “This protocol will make it easier for consumers to mix and match smart home devices and make choices based on the device itself and not feel committed to one platform or another because of what they currently own.” At CES, expect to see the first wave of Mattercompatible products, but many operational questions remain. Will there be a single Matter app? How backward compatible will legacy smart home products be? Will Matter bridges or hubs be nec-

essary? And, perhaps the most pressing question, can these carnivorous tech behemoths really all work together? “Most predominant technology standards have been established through competition, where the most adopted one prevails” observes Kevin Collins, Accenture’s Software & Platform Services industry managing director. “However, it’s clear that the connected home market desperately needs one or two standards to emerge. Matter could have the opportunity to link competing ecosystems together, which would be powerful.” Keeping Amazon’s, Apple’s, Google’s and Samsung’s collective corporate eyes on the interoperability prize is challenging enough. But CSA needs to convince third-party device, service providers, and eventually consumers that Matter matters. All of this will take time. “Apple, Google, Samsung and Amazon all have good reason to see smart home adoption grow far past where it is now, and standardization is the route to that,” insists Jonathan Collins, smart home research director at ABI Research. “The impact of Matter is already underway in the product development and strategies of smart home players across the market. We expect it will be quickly supported with compliance products, applications, and roadmaps. That said, [Matter’s] impact will be more gradual rather than a sudden spike in spending.” Tempering Matter expectations will likely last until the concept is proven in the marketplace. “No one can force or hold anyone to the standard,” says Robert Heiblim, partner and co-founder of Blue Salve Partners and chair of CTA’s Small Business Council. “Unless they harmonize the message and packaging, no one will know or care. Yes, Matter is nice, but I am skeptical it will make much impact, at least in 2022.”

GAMING

Future Pathways for the Gaming Industry BY MAXYM DMYTRIYEV, MARKET ANALYST, FUTURESOURCE CONSULTING Here at Futuresource Consulting, we expect the gaming industry to deliver global sales of $196 billion in 2021, once the final figures are in. It’s a diverse sector, drawing revenues from hardware, software, gaming accessories, XR and Esports. While software commands the lion’s share, accounting for more than 85 percent of the total, Esports is currently bringing up the rear. And although XR continues to gain a foothold in the market, content availability is still limited. Looking at the wider entertainment landscape, gaming consistently captures around one third of global consumer entertainment content spend and is steadily growing. That’s despite the rising popularity of free-to-play (F2P) games, with their convenience, accessibility and inherent affordability.

at just 4% of global revenues. Futuresource expect this small proportion to continue to shrink away further, as F2P exerts its influence as a substantial driving force behind DLC spend. The transition from physical disc to digital content delivery continues apace. Our research shows a current digital to physical revenue split of 61 percent to 39 percent for consoles in favor of digital delivery. Yet there are still strongholds of interest for physical disc purchases, predominantly within the hardcore gamer community. Many of these gamers continue to buy discs for a combination of collectability, nostalgia and trade-in reasons. However, this group is an ever-diminishing minority in an expanding maelstrom of gamers from all walks of life.

GAMING MAINTAINS ITS STRENGTH

PHYSICAL FORMAT STILL SHOWING STRENGTH

Accounting for 37 percent of global home entertainment spend in 2021, gaming has proved to be the most resilient entertainment segment during lockdown. We expect it to average a CAGR of 8% between 2019 and 2022, while music and video will both have to contend with heavier tumbles over the period. Drilling into the gaming ecosystem detail, over half of all spend is on mobile gaming. That’s no surprise, as the global installed base of mobile devices has now surpassed the four billion barrier, with spending heavily skewed towards APAC consumers. Meanwhile, digital software delivery is hitting new highs, accounting for 68% of total console and handheld spend, and rising.

It’s not all going digital’s way. Nintendo handheld games are bucking the wider trend, with physical games acc unting for 56 percent of revenues. That’s partially down to Nintendo’s tendency to maintain prices on their IP releases, with very few price reductions. As a result, physical games and consoles hold their value extremely well when compared to their counterparts. Combined with a strong trade-in and gifting aspect to their games, there’s a raft of compelling motivations that is persuading consumers to stand clear of the rising digital tide.

With its compelling value-for-money proposition for hardcore gamers and the newly initiated alike, Game Pass now has a player base of around 30 million. Plus, with strategic partnerships in place with telcos for exclusive bundle deals and a firm eye on 5G providers, its star continues to rise. Beyond the tech, there’s an increasing drive in the industry to cut out the middleman, with retailers a prime target for the freezeout. Many publishers, including Ubisoft/EA, are offering subscription-based access to play their catalogue of games, delivered through a launcher via the PC.

NO CONVERGENCE FROM THE CONSOLES

INTEROPERABILITY, METAVERSE AND MORE

PlayStation and Xbox are both making strong inroads into digital content, with COVID-19 acting as a further catalyst to an already shifting marketplace. Yet while PlayStation is treading a relatively soft path into digital delivery, Xbox is leaning hard into its strategy, effecting a long-term play with Game Pass.

The increasing interoperability of games across multiple platforms is also becoming a key theme within the sector. Gameplay convergence is a lucrative and pivotal concept for publishers, as it unifies all consumers, bringing them together in one place. This opens up a new world of engagement, as players are released from the constraints of device. They

DLC CASTS A BIG SHADOW Across all platforms, downloadable content (DLC) is a key revenue driver. It already accounts for 90 percent of all mobile and tablet gaming revenues, with paid mobile games fading from the picture,

can select the platform that suits them in the here and now. More importantly, they can choose to play on the go. And the power of networks comes into play as well. Players can connect with friends who may own a competing platform. As a result, publishers are accessing a wider player audience and reaching deep into their wallets. The ecosystem is already here. Games like Fortnite, Rocket League and Minecraft allow users to play across different devices, and these brands are beginning to touch upon the makings of a metaverse. This embryonic metaverse is likely to materialize within the gaming ecosystem first, as gamers have shown to be open and responsive to innovation and change. From there, we expect it to extend to the rest of the internet.

HEADPHONES

Key Features and Technologies Driving the Headphones and Hearables Mega Convergence BY RASIKA D’SOUZA, PRINCIPAL ANALYST, FUTURESOURCE CONSULTING Consumer demand for headphones has evolved significantly over the past few years. Continued technology advancement and lifestyle choices are extending existing use-cases, as well as developing new ones. As a result, such products must become more

ergonomic, allowing for longer wearing times whilst becoming more intuitive to better understand varying environments and applications. This very topic was recently discussed at Futuresource’s Audio Collaborative event which took place last month, the sessions of which can be viewed here.

HEALTHY MARKET GROWTH AND BRAND CHOICE AMONGST CONSUMERS The overall headphones market is set to grow at a healthy 15% through 2025, with use-cases beyond music becoming well-established. Growth in the true wireless (TWS) space remains significant and now represents over 50% of all new headphones sales. Work from home, online education, fitness and gaming emerged as important use cases during the pandemic and are set to retain their relevance in the long term. Apple is the category leader and commands close to a quarter of this segment. According to Futuresource’s Audio Tech Lifestyles consumer research, two thirds of consumers prefer to purchase the same brand of TWS as their smartphones, owing to the seamless user interface and ecosystem experience; a trend also benefitting Samsung and

Xiaomi’s performance in the category.

INDUSTRY MOVES TOWARDS IMPROVED LISTENING A top trend in the headphones and hearables convergence continues to be the pursuit of ever higher quality audio improving the listening experience for consumers. This will entail bringing in better quality audio, not restricted to music listening alone. The rising non-music-based functionality of headphones is sparking increased focus on ‘Zoom fatigue’ reduction and the way in which improved audio quality can aid this. This also becomes imperative as hearables are used for ever longer periods of time throughout the day and night. Sound quality transcends beyond hearables and is perhaps more relevant to hearing aids users. Beyond just helping consumers listen to sounds, users also need to be able to hear better in more challenging environments, such as in a noisy restaurant or on public transport.

WHAT KEY FEATURES WILL START TO DEVELOP? The development of all-in-one SOCs from chipset vendors has already aided in the incorporation of features such as voice assistants and ANC in sub $100 devices. The addition of ANC continues to rise in popularity and accounted close to a third of all TWS shipments from Q1-Q3 2021. The scope to integrate biometric sensors and conversational enhancement technology improves the usability and opportunity presented by the wider hearables segment. However, feature development is a tradeoff between battery consumption and the consumer need that the headset vendor is looking to satisfy, with the ultimate goal to enhance user experience.

CES 2022 DAILY | JANUARY 5-8, 2022 | 33 Hearing health is clearly a space with immense monetization opportunities that ecosystem giants will look to develop with the measurable insights derived from all the tracking data and offering associated health-based services. As this trend towards audio convergence continues to unfold, the next practical step is the production of Bluetooth low energy devices and with it, reduced sized batteries and subsequently smaller devices, in turn enhancing wearer comfort level for longer periods of time.

THE NEXT GENERATION OF PRODUCTS The health advantages that will come from the advancements being made in the headset industries provides a whole host of new opportunities. Headsets that can monitor brain activity and heart rate will enable science fiction to become reality. For these devices to transition from concept to

reality, the increase of computational power will be key. More computational and processing power will mean users have the power to define what good sound and bad sound is, and to personalise their own audio for the optimal listening experience. About Futuresource: Futuresource Consulting is a market research and consulting company, providing its clients with expertise in Professional AV, Consumer Electronics, Education Technology, Content & Entertainment, Professional Broadcast and Automotive. Sky Labs Honored for CART-I Device BOOTH 8063 South Korea’s Sky Labs has been named a CES 2022 Innovation Awards Honoree for CART-I, a ringtype medical device for continuous Atrial Fibrillation monitoring without user intervention. CART-I on the finger Sky Labs’ CART-I device for continuous Atrial Fibrillation collects both ECG and monitoring without user intervention PPG signals and then analyzes the data to obtain information on the pulse rate and Atrial Fibrillation. ECG is more accurate than PPG, but PPG has a higher probability of detecting irregularly occurring episodes. Having both techniques together can significantly increase the chance of detecting AF. Why a ring-type design? The finger is the most ideal measurement site as it provides more accurate and better signal quality; offers an abundant supply of arterial blood, highest amplitude, the smallest pulse peak time and reflection index for PPG, easier to affix sensors and could minimize the motion artifact.

An Energized Future at CES I am thrilled to back in Las Vegas for CES 2022, the global stage for innovation. We are back in-person and digitally so global audiences can visit with major brands and startups, as well as hear from tech leaders and industry advocates. The importance of in-person events has been reinforced during the pandemic. Although technology is valuable in bringing us together while in remote locations, we miss seeing each other and there is nothing quite like the power of meeting in person. CES is about growing business, discovering new opportunities and forging relationships with partners, investors, customers and media. The innovations at CES will shape 2022 and beyond. The entire tech ecosystem is represented on the show floor. See transformative tech including 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality/virtual reality/mixed reality/extended reality (AR, VR, MR, XR), NEXTGEN TV, smart home, smart cities, sports tech, digital health, intelligent robotics, vehicle tech and so much more. Non-traditional companies also use the CES platform to connect with the global tech community and this year we will see advances in food tech, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrencies (digital assets), and even space tech. We’ll also see the foundational technologies that are being used to build the metaverse(s) that will provide immersive experiences that blend the virtual world with the physical world.

Health Tech at CES The pandemic sped the adoption of health and wellness technologies and services. The Health and Wellness category will have a strong presence at CES 2022 with remote patient diagnostics and monitoring, digital therapeutics, mental health, wearables, and telehealth on display in the North Hall. Exhibitors like Abbott, AT&T Business, Omron Healthcare, Sleep Number and Revival Health, will showcase the latest advances.

Innovation Alliance, Humana, Humetrix, Included Health (formerly Doctor On Demand), Kinsa Health, Microsoft, Northwell Health, Philips, ResMed, Roche Diabetes Care, SSM Health, UCHealth and Xealth.

Tech driven home fitness has soared in popularity as people embrace the convenience of working out at home. Roughly 1.5 million units of connected exercise equipment were shipped in 2020, and in 2021 the devices will cross two million (a 43% rise) and earn $3.9 billion (a 40% increase), according to CTA Market Research. Shipments of connected health monitoring devices such as smart thermometers, pulse oximeters and blood pressure monitors will grow to 13 million units (up 23%) and earn $740 million in revenue (a 17% increase). The total revenue of health and fitness tech will reach $13 billion in 2021, a 12% growth over last year. Smartwatches will grow 8% in unit shipments, driven by techsavvy consumers. While the pandemic demonstrated the value of innovative tech during the crisis, it also exposed weaknesses in the health care system including disorganized health data, fragile supply chains, inequitable care and outdated health-related laws. To address these issues, CTA brought together technology companies, health systems, medical device manufacturers, insurance providers, public policy organizations and medical societies to propose policy recommendations to promote technology to better prepare for future health crises and advance health equity.

Public Health Tech Initiative (PHTI)

The Health Equity and Access Leadership Coalition (HEAL) HEAL is a collaboration of nearly 35 organizations spanning the health ecosystem led by CTA and the Connected Health Initiative. The group includes organizations like Anthem, Fitbit (a Google company), Omron Healthcare, Philips, ResMed, the University of Mississippi Medical Center and Validic that analyzed how digital health can play a more significant role in mitigating health disparities. The HEAL Coalition’s white paper, Advancing Health Equity Through Technology, published in November 2021, examines the impact low digital Advancing Health literacy has on health outcomes and Equity Through how lack of broadband access affects Technology digital health adoption. Some of the Coalition’s recommendations include encouraging the development of digital hubs to train, educate, and support patients and providers, and supporting a coherent expansion of broadband coverage to ensure connectivity reaches rural and underserved areas. November 2021

The PHTI examines how health technology can better respond to future public health emergencies – as it relates to resources, strengthening public health systems, capacity, communication and resilience. The PHTI’s white paper, Public Health Tech Initiative: Using Health Technology to Respond to Public Health Emergencies, was published in November 2021. It looks at lessons learned from the pandemic and recommends steps governments and industry can take to improve planning, response, coordination and remediation to deal with future public health crises. 5G Leads Mobile Connectivity From telemedicine to tele-education, smart cities and entertainment, 5G is accelerating innovation. CES 2022 is the global hub for 5G, bringing the connected tech ecosystem together to reshape the digital future.

connected sensors, displays and computing platforms.” Similarly, a factory “could have thousands of sensors on its production lines, monitoring processes in real time, which would also boost safety,” Koenig adds.

With transformative tech pushing toward a connected world dependent on network capacity, mobile carriers are responding with ultra-fast, powerful 5G networks built to improve efficiency and empower user experiences. Enthusiasm around 5G is based on its advanced proficiencies, high speed, increased bandwidth and low latency. These capabilities will inspire the creation of immense internet of things (IoT) devices from smartphones to advances in health care to even more complex solutions such as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) and mixed reality (MR) that require significant computing capabilities on the edge of the network. 5G will allow cars and driverless vehicles to interact with other cars and the infrastructure surrounding them using vehicle-toeverything (V2X) technology to allow each to communicate with the traffic system. To accomplish this, extremely low latencies or time delays are required. The vehicles need to exchange information almost instantly and 5G offers sub-one-millisecond latency. 5G will enable $12 trillion of global economic activity in 2035, generating 22.3 million jobs in the 5G global value chain alone, according to CTA Market Research. CTA expects unit shipments for 5G handsets to reach almost 15 million units this year, which is an 800% increase from 2019. By 2022, 77% of smartphones shipping in the U.S. will be 5G-enabled, according to CTA. The biggest change 5G may bring is in AR and VR. As phones transform into devices meant to be used with VR headsets, the very low latency and high speeds of 5G will deliver an augmented world with an abundance of information coming from the internet. The small cell aspects of 5G may help with in-building coverage, as home routers also become cell sites. “5G will be the connectivity standard,” says Steve Koenig vice president, CTA market research. Although smartphone voice and data services for consumers will be at the vanguard for residential 5G broadband, Koenig envisions “in five years we’ll have a robust landscape of industrial IoT applications across the economy powered by 5G in every conceivable economic sector.” Koenig foresees massive 5G private networks for hospitals, campuses, factories and other institutional users. By 2027, he predicts revenues from business and institutional 5G customers will outstrip the consumer side. He foresees “a myriad of

Highlighting NFTs at C Space Some of the NFT Exhibitors at CES 2022 • Atomic Form: A new exhibitor at CES, this company makes hardware and software for NFTs and Web3 media. At CES 2022, the company will exhibit its 27-inch 4K LCD “Atomic Form Wave” that lets customers control how their crypto art is displayed. As the home for the advertising, entertainment and content community at CES, C Space is where the world’s leading brands, advertisers, media platforms and content creators meet to make deals and showcase tech shaping the industry. At CES 2022, a new category, NFTs (non-fungible tokens), will also be part of C Space. The area will feature the growing digital assets industry, with a focus on NFTs, initial coin offerings (ICOs) and other blockchainbased technologies.

• Autograph: Co-founded by Tom Brady. Autograph is an NFT platform that brings together the most iconic brands and legendary names in sports, entertainment, and culture to create unique digital collections and experiences.

NFTs are a fancy way of saying that something is unique and cannot easily be replaced by another substitute. For instance, one unit of Bitcoin or Ethereum essentially is the same as another. But a non-fungible item such as a unique photo or video is a one-of-akind item. Several popular forms of NFTs include digital art pieces, historical video moments and even history-making social network posts. Now seen as coveted digital collector’s items, some collectibles can even command seven-figure purchase prices. The goal at CES is to bring studios, entertainment companies, networks, blockchain and other technology companies together to explore opportunities with NFTs.

• FTX: A Bahamian-based cryptocurrency exchange platform that allows users to trade cryptocurrencies.

NFTs have ballooned to become a $2.5 billion market. These digital collectibles – which turn intellectutal property assets into virtual forms of memorabilia – effectively pair the monetary concept of fungibility with the shared ledgering of cryptocurrency, allowing collectors to certify high-tech assets as unique. Public interest continues to grow in these virtual keepsakes.

The Smarter Home CTA Market Research • For the fourth straight year, smart speakers lead the smart home category – 41% of homes now own a smart speaker, and 23% plan to buy one in the next year. • Smart appliances and smart doorbells (both at 26%) are the second-most frequently owned smart home tech. With consumers spending more time at home during the pandemic, innovation in smart home technology has soared with surges in smart displays, smart doorbells, smart appliances and smart speakers. Companies like AARP, Kohler, Lutron, Moen, Ooma, Ring, simplehuman and TOTO located in the Venetian Expo, will showcase why CES is the best place to experience the technologies and solutions in the smart home sector. Smart home products such as connected thermostats, networkconnected security cameras, digital assistants and lighting including Wi-Fi-connected light bulbs, allow users control over their homes’ systems and appliances. The ability to control lights or the lock on the front door via a smartphone provides convenience to users but only scratches the surface of what these always-on, always-connected, sensor-laded products can do. The true value of the smart home is not the ability to control devices via a mobile app or voice, but rather how that control is being guided and augmented by data from other connected devices and applications in the home. The connected home enjoys a symbiotic relationship with smart speakers and digital assistants. Digital assistants act as virtual command centers for smart home products. Consumers now want their devices to work with contextual relevance and a degree of independence, thereby alleviating the chore of programming each movement from their devices. More broadly, innovations in product interoperability, device intelligence, and humanmachine interfaces will define the next era of smart home devices. Smart home systems, with their extensive automation, sensing and remote-control capabilities also offer many environmental benefits with healthy home technologies such as air purifiers.

The Intelligent Kitchen While smart kitchen products like lighting, remote timing and control of appliances via Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa-voice activated features exist already – staying-athome during the pandemic increased the focus on how to make kitchens more functional. The key element involves integration. Thanks to technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence and IoT, that can be remotely controlled through an app, the smart kitchen is flourishing. CTA projects that smart home appliance revenue will reach $7 billion in 2021, and $8.4 billion by 2024. And nearly 9.1 million smart appliances will ship in the U.S. this year, expected to jump to 11.4 million by 2024, CTA says. A panoply of smart kitchen devices was introduced at CES last year including: • ColdSnap from Sigma Phase is a smart ice cream maker with prepackaged pods that deliver ice cream and smoothies in seconds. The individual servings are flash frozen and dispensed. ColdSnap, also was a CES 2021 Innovations finalist. • Moley Robotics’ dexterous robot prepares freshly cooked meals with the skill of a master chef. The robot reliably reproduces the movements of human hands and can retrieve ingredients from the smart fridge, adjust oven temperatures, plate up and clean up after itself. • Oliver from Else Labs, a single pot cooking robot dispenses fresh ingredients to automate the cooking process with the help of temperature sensing and machine vision capabilities for unattended stovetop cooking.

The Future of Mobility  The vehicle tech category will be on display in the new West Hall at CES 2022. From self-driving and electric vehicles to Mobility as a Service (MAAS) and C-V2X communications, the ecosystem of manufacturers, suppliers, original equipment manufacturers, aftermarket businesses, and software and chip developers will show the latest advances in vehicle tech. For example, see autonomous vehicles that can relieve traffic congestion, support ridesharing, lower pollution levels and make driving safer. Although it’s hard to predict when mass deployment of self-driving vehicles will occur, many are now being tested on public roads. During the pandemic new applications like deliveries of groceries and medicines to consumers were delivered by selfdriving vehicles. To help educate the public about self-driving cars, CTA is working with Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE), a non-profit organization backed by the automotive and technology industries that was launched at CES 2019. What’s more, electrification of vehicles, represented by plug-in, electric vehicles (EVs) are a big trend demonstrated by GM and Tesla. Globally, many vehicle OEMs have announced plans to produce more EVs in the future. New technologies that sense and analyze data to help solve problems will enable EVs to provide clean transportation for personal vehicles. Building all-electric vehicles with self-driving capabilities integrated from the start, rather than through retrofits, is the safest, most efficient way to unlock the tremendous potential and societal benefits of self-driving cars. But vehicle tech encompasses more than just cars. Anything that moves can integrate tech like autonomous software, internet connectivity and artificial intelligence. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) safety features are now more common on new vehicles through features like collision warning/ avoidance, active lane keeping and adaptive cruise control. Flying cars or eVTOLs (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) look to augment existing MaaS business models by incorporating shortrange flights to address medium-range transportation needs. Uber Elevate (operating between Manhattan and JFK) is one example of this trend.

CES 2022 DAILY ®

The Next Internet – The Metaverse

companies are building metaverse-style platforms like Second Life developer Linden Lab. Proponents of the metaverse say this is a generational shift in everything from business to entertainment to social interactions.

Standards Make it Happen

The metaverse is an immersive, always-on, virtual environment created by billions of people interacting with it and each other. These are shared virtual worlds where avatars—digital versions of us— play, socialize and even work together. Its characteristics include unprecedented interoperability and interactivity — users can take their avatars and goods from one place in the metaverse to another – spurred on by virtual reality (VR) and gaming technology. Many of the building blocks of this virtualized world are already in play with a vast array of devices, systems, services and applications acting in concert. These technologies will be on display at CES 2022. 5G networks will provide the robust connectivity to support the massive MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) requirements of the metaverse. Cloud computing environments are a central component to operating the metaverse as well as edge compute devices including AR/VR hardware, haptic apparel, cameras, and a host of other sensors and input devices. Volumetric video will be a key construct in the metaverse. Volumetric filmmaking combines the artistry of cinema with the interactivity of video games by using advanced algorithms to render interactive threedimensional moving images. The new meta economy is rooted in blockchain technology. Consider the momentum of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) which are blockchain-based digital tokens that provide public proof of ownership of a digital asset like art, music or video. They have become popular as artists and industries like professional sports seek to monetize their craft in the digital realm. This leads to cryptocurrency and the emerging sector of decentralized finance (DEFI), which enables peer to peer transactions using digital coinage, side-stepping traditional centralized financial intermediaries. DEFI models are the new cash and the ultimate expression of the digital wallet.

To achieve a metaverse that is open, like the internet, requires standards for how virtual worlds and avatars are going to interact. CTA is developing standards to support the future of content through its XR Committee and the WAVE Project which aims to improve how internetdelivered commercial video is handled on devices and to make it easier for content creators to distribute video to those devices. Get involved at standards.CTA.tech.

CTA Research CTA’s market research shows shipments of XR eyewear (augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) headsets combined) to the U.S. will more than quadruple from 2021 to 2025. CTA also forecasts that consumer spending on gaming software will grow from $47.6 billion in 2021 to $59 billion in 2025. But the metaverse will be a resource for more than social connections and entertainment. For example, CTA’s XR Enterprise Trends report (October 2021) found companies are using VR initiatives to support training, sales, design, customer engagement and meetings. The research also found that among companies using XR tech in their business, 59% believe it will have a significant impact on their organization over the next five years.

Lucrative Space Tech

To The Stars and Back to CES A host of wealthy entrepreneurs involved in space endeavors include Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, Larry Pages’ Planetary Resources, Mark Cuban’s Relativity Space to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin. Add to that list, Sierra Space, (a subsidiary of Sierra Nevada Corporation), that launched in April 2021 and is partnering with Blue Origin. The independent commercial space company has a “space-as-a-service” business model that will leverage cutting-edge technologies, such as Dream Chaser® spaceplanes and expandable LIFE™ habitats. SNC has participated in over 500 missions to space, including 14 missions to Mars. It also is a first-time exhibitor in the new Space Tech category at CES 2022 and is showcasing its spaceplane in Central Plaza. Following is an excerpt from CTA’s It Is Innovation (i3) magazine with Eren Ozmen chairwoman, president and owner of SNC.

The space economy is expected to grow to almost $1 trillion over the next few decades, from $340 billion in 2019, says the UBS Chief Investment Office, a research arm of the global financial services firm UBS AG. While much excitement is focused on space travel, there are opportunities in addition to tourism including the deployment of more satellite networks needed to satisfy bandwidth demand by automated cars and other internetconnected things. There is also the potential for asteroid mining and space-based manufacturing in the future. The UBS report says, “Over the next decade, launch costs are predicted to decline 10-fold. Part of this decline will be driven by the mainstream adoption of reusable rocket technology.” Both SpaceX and Blue Origin are expected to send medium-to-heavy payloads into geostationary orbit with their Falcon 9 and New Shepard reusable rockets, respectively. Blue Origin’s New Shepard was launched into sub-orbital space in July for a 10-minute flight above Earth, with four passengers aboard. Earlier in the month, Virgin Galactic, and five crew members ventured even higher, to the edge of space, in that company’s own space vessel. Topping those trips, SpaceX in September conducted a mission named Inspiration4 to take a crew of four space tourists higher into actual orbit on its Dragon Capsule spaceship. The space economy is forecast to soar to $1.4 trillion by 2030 with space mining, manufacturing and tourism off-setting costs. Space manufacturing could comprise growing human organs or new types of fiber optic cables; space mining on asteroids and the moon could yield valuable metals and rare earth minerals.

Can you talk about your partnership with Blue Origin? Sierra Space and Blue Origin are principal partners on Orbital Reef and we are very excited to join forces with Jeff Bezos to bring this visionary commercial space station to life. By the end of this decade, Orbital Reef will be the premier space station in lowEarth orbit for commerce, research and tourism. Think of it as a space business park. This orbital destination will be commercially developed, owned and operated. It will bring space within reach for business and travel, creating a new ecosystem. Our Dream Chaser will provide the transportation, and our LIFE modules will provide the destination on Orbital Reef. Sierra Space will also provide a node that will be used for a variety of exploration and logistics functions on the station, including docking ports to connect visiting vehicles and spacecraft. These elements will make the Orbital Reef accessible and flexible so more people, science and businesses can benefit. Sierra Space and Blue Origin are committed to a long-term vision and equal partnership for low-Earth orbit beyond the Orbital Reef.

CTA’s Shapiro: Find Your Next Inspiration at CES 2022 BY GRANT MORGAN CTA president and CEO Gary Shapiro and Karen Chupka, CES executive vice president, welcomed the world back to CES after last year’s virtual-only show with their much-anticipated CTA State of the Industry keynote Wednesday morning, complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a glimpse into what tech has to offer now and in the future. “Just imagine where we would have been without these last two years without modern technology,” Shapiro asked attendees. “Within this pandemic we’ve embraced technology to keep us healthy, safe and connected to our schools, our jobs, our doctors, our families and our friends.” Expounding on the ways technology has changed our way of life and how we’re only scratching the surface of innovation, Shapiro and Chupka introduced new industries joining CES 2022, including Space Tech, Food Tech and Digital Assets (NFTs). Additionally, an emphasis on autonomous vehicles and health tech are noticeable at this year’s CES as these industries have experienced substantial growth and success. Tech is for everyone, and that is what CES is all about. It is difficult to imagine what our lives would have been without the technology that connected us during the pandemic, “but the fact is, surviving is not enough,” Shapiro warned. “We need to thrive, to make connections and discoveries.” Shapiro encouraged CES attendees to look around and reflect as they wander the expo halls and attend the sessions of the show physically, or digitally, “Think about how the technology you see around you is already changing our world for the better,” he said in his closing remarks. “Take some time to introduce yourself to someone from another company, another industry, another country. Because you never know where you will find your next inspiration.”

Jong-Hee (JH) Han, vice chairman, CEO and head of DX (Device eXperience) Division at Samsung

Samsung Keynote Focuses on Working Together To Build a Better Future BY ANTHONY SAVONA The Tuesday night keynote by Jong-Hee ( JH) Han, vice chairman, CEO and head of DX (Device eXperience) Division at Samsung, was devoted not only to the ways that the company is tackling sustainability issues, but also how it is working with the younger generation and strategic partners to a build a future that will make life better for everyone. But he also advised that Samsung cannot reach that future alone, and only by working together—as individuals and as an industry—can we achieve our goals. These concepts are exemplified by Samsung’s “Together for tomorrow” vision, which details the company’s efforts to usher in a new age of togetherness with customizable experiences that reflect consumers’ evolving lifestyles and innovations that mark progress for both society and the planet. As Han explained, Samsung plans to make its vision a reality by introducing a range of sustainability initiatives, purposeful partnerships and customizable and connected technologies. As part of its sustainability initiatives, Han described how Samsung has reduced carbon emissions through its screens and mobile devices by 700,000 tons. Recycled materials are also a big part of the Samsung sustainability journey, with the company promising to use 30 times more recycled materials than it has the past two years. The recycled material also applies to the company’s packaging. He also announced a collaboration with Patagonia to create a solution that will help fight plastic pollution by enabling Samsung washing ma-

chines to minimize microplastics from entering waterways through laundry cycles. Han then pivoted from working with industry leaders to working with the next generation of technology experts that are shaping our world. With that, he introduced several members of Samsung’s Future Generation Lab who walked the audience through some of the innovative new products Samsung is launching at CES, including The Freestyle projector, the Samsung Gaming Hub, the Odyssey Ark gaming monitor and the bespoke-oriented #YouMake project. The final product announcement involved the new Samsung Home Hub, which takes connected home experiences to the next level with a SmartThings service that integrates with AIconnected appliances to simplify home management. The Samsung SmartThings Hub will be a built-in feature in its 2022 TVs, Smart Monitors and Family Hub refrigerators. Samsung has sldo become a founding member of the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA), which brings together various smart home appliance manufacturers. The organization aims to foster greater interoperability between devices across brands to give consumers more choice, and to enhance the security and safety of products and services. “Samsung’s programs to empower the next generation have now reached more than 21 million people,” concluded Han. “This is the better tomorrow we all seek: enabling people to reach beyond their dreams, a planet protected so others can experience its wonders, innovation as the spark for change.”
