INSIGHTS, TOOLS,

CONNECTIONS

NAB Show Welcomes Back a ‘Vibrant, Thriving’ Industry Dear NAB Show Community,

Curtis LeGeyt NAB President and CEO

I am thrilled to welcome you back to Las Vegas for the 2022 NAB Show. After more than three years apart, I know our attendees, exhibitors, speakers and partners are eager to connect in-person, explore the latest innovations and ideas shaping the future of storytelling, and get back to doing business face-to-face. While I’m no stranger to NAB Show, this is my first as president and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters. It is truly an honor to lead this organization as we advocate on behalf of America’s radio and television broadcasters. I share millions of Americans’ deep appreciation for the tremendous service broadcasters provide their communities every day, from trustworthy local journalism about the issues affecting our lives to help for charities serving those in need, support for the small businesses that are the lifeblood of local economies to lifeline news coverage when severe weather strikes. During the pandemic, broadcasters kept us informed about how COVID was affecting our neighborhoods, let us know which struggling restaurants and businesses could use our support, entertained and enlightened us during the darkest days, and educated us about the necessity and efficacy of vaccinations to keep us safe. As the leading voice for broadcasting in Washington, D.C., NAB’s priority is to ensure that broadcasters have the tools, resources, talent and freedom to compete fairly in today’s media marketplace. At a time when newspapers are struggling to stay afloat, subscription platforms have fostered polarization and sown discord, and misinformation and disinformation run rampant on social media, it is more important than ever that we have a vibrant, thriving broadcasting industry. NAB is also helping our broadcast members navigate business challenges and respond to the evolving ways content is created and consumed. We work collaboratively with other stakeholders to develop new innovations, standards and services to better serve and engage audiences. NAB also helps train the next generation of broadcasters and executives who will revolutionize our industry with their imaginations, out-of-the-box thinking and unique perspectives. We are also the producers of NAB Show, the premier destination to explore the rapidly changing world of media, entertainment and technology. From broadcasting to podcasting to filmmaking to esports, this year’s NAB Show is the place to be for anyone looking for the insights, connections and tools needed to keep pace with the evolution in content that is happening at lightspeed. In response to the feedback of our community and in recognition of the shifting nature of content, we have reimagined this year’s NAB Show to provide a more curated experience to guide participants around the convention. Exhibits, sessions and networking events are arranged around three main elements of the content lifecycle – Create, Connect and Capitalize. A fourth element impacting all aspects of content creation and delivery — Intelligent Content — will also be showcased. We believe this realignment will spark captivating conversations about the overlapping nature of content regardless of its medium, lead to interesting collaborations among like-minded professionals, provide for productive learning experiences and better connect buyers and sellers. We are committed to continuing the conversations started this week throughout the year on NAB Amplify, our digital platform connecting and engaging the NAB Show community year-round through networking, discovery and educational opportunities. I am proud of the work of the NAB team to deliver a great live, in-person event that the entire NAB Show community can enjoy. I am looking forward to taking in the sights and sounds of the show floor, greeting old friends and making new ones, learning from creative thought leaders, and gaining an understanding of where we are as an industry and where we go from here. I hope you join me in having a great 2022 NAB Show. Sincerely, Curtis LeGeyt

most exciting areas of expansion. “There are more stations, more receivers, more viewers and more new opportunities around better picture, sound and interactivity to drive engagement,” he said. In-person demonstrations at locations such as NextGen Now in the Experiential Zone will help media companies understand the challenges in implementing the ATSC 3.0 standard in local markets. Attendees can learn more about 5G production techniques, particularly around live events. “And when combined with cloud workflows, which is even bigger, it borders on revolutionary for how broadcasters source, produce and publish their content,” Matheny said. growth: streaming media. A two-day Streaming Summit is returning with a look at the technical and business challenges in packaging, monetizing and distributing online video. “Whether it be audio or video, ad-supported or subscription, live or on-demand, or via handheld remote or voice-controlled, streaming is an exciting and growing way broadcasters and media companies are reaching consumers,” Brown said. With the integration of the Radio Show, NAB Show offers an abundance of specially curated programing focused on the future of audio as well as targeted networking opportunities for radio professionals — more than at any other event previously.

streams,” said Ann Marie Cumming, senior vice president of Communications at NAB. A number of sessions will rewind and reflect lessons learned during the pandemic shutdown, such as sessions on remote work solutions, expanding workflow into more efficient systems and ensuring privacy and security. Additional programming and trainings have also been created in response to feedback from the NAB Show community to better prepare attendees to address current issues affecting the media landscape. NAB Show has partnered with the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) to present two intensive educational workshops, developed in coordi-

On the show floor, exhibitors will be located in the area that they best represent. more closely curated show, said Chris Brown, executive vice president and managing director of Global Connections and Events for NAB. The new Intelligent Content showcase, located in the West Hall, will explore the ways in which data, artificial intelligence and automation are influencing the full content life cycle, from the way content is created and managed to the manner in which it is delivered, consumed and monetized. A series of sessions and pavilions will target key areas of growth. According to Sam Matheny, NAB executive vice president of Technology and the organization’s CTO, NextGen TV is one of the fastest growing and

nation with the newly formed Cine Consortium, covering cinematic techniques in lightning. In addition, a diversity symposium will focus on the recruitment process and helping companies attract a diverse workforce in a hyper-competitive hiring environment, while the #GALSNGEAR Women’s Leadership Summit will provide learning and networking and content to help women in media, entertainment and technology advance their careers. Today, NAB plans to welcome 2022 inductees “The Price Is Right” and Jim Bohannon into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame, as well as 2021 inductees Lester Holt and NPR’s “All Things Considered,” during the Achievement in Broadcasting Awards. Hubbard Radio’s Jeremy Sinon will also receive the 2022 Digital Leadership Award during the ceremony. NAB will also honor engineers Ashruf El-Dinary of Xperi Corp. and Peter Sockett of Capitol Broadcasting Co. today with the presentation of the Engineering Achievement Awards. NAB’s LeGeyt will deliver his inaugural State of the Broadcast Industry keynote during Monday’s NAB Show Welcome event. According to the NAB’s Brown, what makes this NAB Show special is not just that it’s been so long since we’ve seen one another — it’s that there is so much possibility in that reconnection. “There has been a lot made of how businesses have been able to adapt to doing business remotely, and while it is true to a degree, there is nothing that can deliver the same impact as in-person interaction,” Brown said. “At a large event like NAB Show there is an energy, excitement and shared connection that simply can’t be replicated.” l

Merging Reality With Fantasy: Virtual Production & Visual Effects on HBO Max’s “Our Flag Means Death” Today | 2–3 p.m. Over the years, the worlds of visual effects and live action production have lived in two different places on a project’s timeline. But with the application of new techniques in virtual production combined with modern visual effects tools, the lines are becoming increasingly blurred. Sam Nicholson, ASC, the virtual production designer from Stargate Studios, and David Van Dyke, visual effects supervisor, breakdown how they combined forces to bring the pirate world of HBO Max’s “Our Flag Means Death” to life. See how modern virtual tools and massive, high-resolution imagery brought the open ocean to life, and merged with visual effects techniques to create the exciting ships, worlds and battles on screen. The session, a Post|Production World keynote, is produced in partnership with Blackmagic Design and is open to all registered attendees. l

Virtual Production’s Future Is Here Today ‘Low-budget movies up until now looked low budget’ By Bob Kovacs TV TECH

Virtual production is set to change how we think films and TV shows are made. In most production, time and money are paramount — and those are the two factors that virtual production impacts the most. For example, budget constraints prevent shooting at the most appropriate locations, and the effort it takes to move from location to location stretches out production time and drives up costs. Effective virtual production can provide ideal locations for a fraction of the cost (and time) it takes to do traditional production. Why is virtual production so significant? “Low-budget movies up until now looked low budget — films like ‘Clerks’ and ‘My Dinner With

01-64_NAB22_DAY1.indd 12

Andre’ had one or two locations because of their limited budgets,” said Peter Hyoguchi, CEO of Roninfilm Virtual Production. “Today with virtual production, we can shoot a low-budget feature with a hundred locations for the cost of one practical.” In addition to being the CEO of Roninfilm, Hyoguchi is also a director, writer, producer and a virtual production VFX supervisor. His introduction to virtual production happened at an opportune moment. “I’d been hired to direct a feature sci-fi called ‘Gods of Mars’ and intended to shoot it conventionally with green screen and old-fashioned CGI,” he said. “Just as we mounted the production, my producing partner, Joan Webb, introduced me to virtual production by encouraging me to check out a demo at an LED volume that was

coincidentally walking distance from my house in Burbank, Calif.” An “LED volume” is a fully enclosed space where motion capture and real-time compositing take place so that virtual environments for TV and film can be easily produced in-camera. Hyoguchi was an instant convert. “This was before “The Mandolorian” came out, so there was no press about it and nobody in Hollywood was talking about this technique,” he said. “But it was clear that this was a tectonic shift for cinema on the scale of talkies or color film. It was clear it would change the way we make media forever.” Roninfilms used the Unreal Engine to create the photorealistic backgrounds seen in “Gods of Mars.” However, figuring it all out was not easy.

TO LEARN MORE There are a number of exhibitors here with products for virtual production. A quick search turned up 48 vendors including: Brainstorm Brompton Technology Calrec Eartec FOR-A Fujifilm/Fujinon Mo-Sys MRMC NEP Group PTZOptics Sony Electronics Thinklogical

“After receiving our first Epic Games/Unreal Engine MegaGrant, we realized we were technically challenged by being underpowered,” said Joan Webb, president of Roninfilms and one of the company’s producers. “We had to get crafty, and [quickly worked out] partnerships with NVidia,

virtual production producer Joan Bevan Webb, CG supervisor Dan Lauer and editor Robert Dias. (An NAB Show Conference Pass is required to attend. Today’s “Connecting Virtual Production” session will focus on the connectivity necessary to make a photorealistic possible. The IT networks needed to support virtual reality production are well

beyond the typical office LAN and will require levels of speed and reliability not seen in the familiar COTS networking catalogs. The session is presented by PacketFabric CEO Dave Ward and Lisa Gerber, the company’s director of media and entertainment. The session is open to all attendees in the CM|IP Presentation Theater on the show floor in the West Hall. Several years ago, the concept of using virtual actors in films caused great concern in the film community. After all, well-paid actors could potentially lose work to a computer-generated phantom that worked long days for free — and didn’t expect a trailer or first-class airfare. There has not yet been any great impact of virtual talent in major films or TV shows. However, the scenery and background action that can be created in virtual production is a different matter. Whether you need to shoot at the base of the Eiffel Tower, see a herd of mastodons in a prehistoric tropical swamp or battle intruders on Saturn’s moon Titan, you can now create the sets and scenes using virtual production. And it doesn’t have to be a big-budget blockbuster. l

Creative Camera Conversations: ‘Nightmare Alley’ Today | 1:55–2:55 p.m. N255-N257 The Society of Camera Operators is presenting an in-depth discussion on the creative decisions made during production of “Nightmare Alley.” “Nightmare Alley,” with four Academy Award nominations, brings the viewer into Guillermo del Toro’s surreal world through the emersion of his visual storytelling. Gilles Corbeil, SOC, camera operator, will discuss working Gilles with director, Guillermo del Toro, and the unique artistic Corbeil, SOC collaboration that is created on his sets. Watch clips from “Nightmare Alley” and hear Corbeil discuss the challenges and creative solutions in making this cinematic thriller. NIghtmare Alley has been nominated for the 2022 Academy Awards for: Best Picture, Cinematography, Costume Design and Production Design. The session is presented in partnership with Createaspere and Society of Camera Operators and requires an NAB Show Conference pass. l

Networking Needs for Virtual Production The connectivity needs of virtual production are far beyond what’s historically been available. Productions and studio facilities have been getting by on sneaker-net and office-grade internet, but virtual production demands a networking infrastructure revolution as well as a creative one. We predict that shooting stages will be adopting production-grade, private and high-bandwidth connectivity and establishing their own on-premise PoPs (points of presence) going forward, to spend significantly less for significantly more bandwidth. Productions will also be able to rely on uniting their off-premise teams, virtual art departments and delivery endpoints far more seamlessly going forward, leaving energies and funds to focus on their creative process. —Lisa Gerber, director of business development for media & entertainment at PacketFabric

Q&A

What is the top business challenge for 2022 facing companies or your customers in the media and entertainment industry? We see the top business challenge for content owners in 2022 as how to properly implement workflows to ensure that content can be created, distributed and monetized efficiently and profitably. The traditional approach of grafting together discrete products doesn’t allow for that. Customers, instead, want vendors to provide them end-to-end remote production solutions that can capture immersive content and stream it immediately across all available distribution channels and platforms. It’s all about building audiences and engagement.

Mickey Miller CEO Vislink

What technology trends will you be following most closely at NAB Show this year? There is growing interest in leveraging AI and machine learning technologies that can be added to REMI workflows to reduce costs, cover additional events and reach new audiences more economically. We believe 5G and AI-driven solutions will be pivotal to achieving the optimum deployment of human and material infrastructure and will increase opportunities to develop new types of differentiated, compelling and profitable content in a variety of formats. HITOMI BROADCAST MATCHBOX LATENCY FEATURE

N2331 | Hitomi Broadcast is showcasing a new latency feature for its MatchBox audio video alignment toolbox. This latest enhancement to MatchBox’s capabilities measures the time of flight of video signals from the front of multiple cameras or at various points through the broadcast chain with milli-second accuracy. With applications in remote and virtual production, this further strengthens Hitomi’s product offering. A measurement is taken by holding an iPhone up in shot running the MatchBox Glass App, which is free to download. A signal is then sent back to the MatchBox Analyser located in an OB truck or MCR. Fast, easy to use and accurate, this solution simplifies the task of measuring latency and gives a lip-sync reading as well. For measuring latency within the broadcast chain, MatchBox Generator can be deployed as a test signal with the Analyser picking up the results downstream.

PERSONALIZED

CONTENT EXPERIENCES

Exhibits Tackle ‘Intelligent Content’ With Media Personalization AWS, MediaKind, Microsoft and Veritone are anchoring the space in the West Hall By Phil Kurz TV TECH

Personalizing media isn’t a new concept, but the how and why behind reaching individuals or groups of media consumers sharing similar tastes with programs and commercials of interest is a relatively new development that’s changing quickly as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning (ML) algorithms running in the cloud make greater inroads into content prep and distribution. A new section of the show floor in the recently opened West Hall is being devoted to Intelligent Content and the tools that make

01-64_NAB22_DAY1.indd 26

it possible, including data-driven, personalized content, AI and ML, Web3, blockchain technology and even the Metaverse. “The new category we are introducing is Intelligent Content, which is all about using data and advanced technology to drive unique and personalized content experiences,” said Chris Brown, NAB’s executive vice president and managing director of Global Connections and Events. INTELLIGENCE AND METADATA

While the storage and processing required to deliver personalized content to audiences is

readily available in the public cloud or private datacenters, it’s a variety of AI/ML-driven tools that enrich media metadata that in many instances are enabling media companies to up their personalization efforts and capitalize on the opportunities doing so presents. “Media organizations have historically not been great at managing metadata or having centralized data repositories. The faster they can bring unification to their data estate and processes, the more intelligent their content will become,” said Simon Crownshaw, director of business strategy, media and entertainment at Microsoft, one of the core Intelligent

Content exhibitors. Noting the company has developed a “powerful and differentiated ecosystem” with the extended capabilities of its “global ISV network,” Crownshaw pointed to Microsoft’s continuing investment in cloud services to combine “just-intime automation, machine learning and data insights” to enable M&E organizations to “bring intelligence into their content delivery.” Veritone, another anchor exhibitor, is taking aim at leveraging AI in the cloud to improve the state of metadata. “Our biggest goal is to ensure we can not only generate valuable metadata through our cognitive processing, but then how we can effectively organize and display it to our users to simplify the process of accessing that media,” said Ben Howell, the company’s director of product management. Leveraging AI algorithms to detect logos, recognize faces, transcribe dialog and read optical characters in the cloud upgrades the quality of metadata associated with video, and is the first step in enabling media companies as well as their customers and viewers to find content they desire thereby personalizing their searches, Howell said. For media companies looking to monetize a content archive, this metadata enables consumers to make granular content searches. For those same companies, it also enhances internal workflows, making it fast and easy for creative talent to find desired content, he said. “Optimized content search and discovery are important for personalization,” said Claire Southey, global tech leader of Media & Entertainment at Amazon Web Services (AWS), another anchor exhibitor in the new area. “By automatically converting audio and video assets into fully searchable archives for highlight generation, compliance monitoring, content consumption analysis and monetization, AWS services are helping make personalization

a data-driven model,” said Baskar Subramanian, co-founder and CEO of Amagi. “It’s part of their DNA. Digital companies have always used analytics as the basis of their decision making.” Long-established media companies are at various stages of adoption, however. Some have hit their stride and deployed their own over-the-top (OTT) FAST channels, AVOD streams and SVOD services that use AI- and ML-driven tools and analytics to make personalized content recommendations and target advertising. “Traditional media organizations like Discovery, Fox and Disney are quite advanced in their cloud journey,” said AWS’s Southey. “We’re also seeing rapid adoption across the board, and further accelerated use in the sports

broadcast sector.” Others, such as local TV broadcasters and station groups, are at the beginning of their journey. “[Capturing data] is still a fairly new concept to them, and they’re slowly realizing its potential,” said Subramanian. Tony Jones, principal technologist at MediaKind, another anchor exhibitor in the Intelligent Content area, agreed. “They definitely are playing catchup. SVOD services, those with content libraries going direct to consumers, and sports companies streaming games in an OTT environment with a lot of interactivity have set the benchmark for broadcasters. They’ve got to do something about it. It’s unsustainable to do otherwise.” Tools like MediaKind’s PRISMA protocol, which enables mani-

fest manipulation and targeting that connects an ad decision server and broadcast and IP delivery chains, may offer broadcasters a path forward as they look to deliver targeted ads and personalized content via NextGen TV with its support for internet connectivity available on smart TVs, Jones said. Personalizing the experiences of audiences with media content, however, is about more than commerce. It’s about giving individuals what they want, said NAB’s Brown. “The consumer continues to be king, demanding content that is not just entertaining but shaped to their interests; and, of course, they want it anytime and anywhere they happen to be. This is no easy expectation to meet, but there are new technologies promising exciting new developments,” Brown said. l

CRAWL, WALK, RUN

Having come out of the digital world, free ad-supported television (FAST), ad-supported and subscription VOD services (AVOD and SVOD), social media and other digital media enterprises were ideally positioned from their outset to leverage AI and ML tools in the cloud to deliver personalized content experiences to the public. “The digital world was born on

What is the top business challenge for 2022 facing companies or your customers in the media and entertainment industry? Lawo is currently tackling several industry challenges, not only business but also technological. The major business challenge currently facing Lawo, but also the wider industry, is the component shortage situation, and how best to meet customer deadlines without product pricing spiraling out of control. PERSONALIZED

CONTENT EXPERIENCES

Upstream of Intelligent Content Distribution Is More Intelligence A rich AI/ML-driven production and post ecosystem has emerged in support By Phil Kurz TV TECH

There’s more to the cloud and artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) when it comes to intelligent content than enriching metadata, analyzing viewer preferences and matching individuals with content and ads via recommendation engines and intelligent ad servers. There’s also what happens before distribution to prepare content using the cloud and other AI/ML algorithms, all of which is being exhibited at the show. In he area of video compres-

real time, which have, until now, been applied to off-line VOD content production only,” said Xavier Ducloux, senior innovation manager at Harmonic. Upstream of encoding, other solutions are taking advantage of the massive number of processors and storage available in the public cloud, virtualized equivalents of traditional production equipment and AI/ML algorithms to prepare content to be intelligent — whether that means localizing content for distribution to non-domestic markets or up- or downconverting it for SD, HD or UHD viewers. For instance, MediaKind is at

sion, encoding and transcoding, vendors are taking advantage of AI and ML to find greater efficiencies to make better use of available bandwidth — whether over the air or the internet — and to optimize compression of content, even when older codecs are in use. “In terms of live compression, AI/ML is pushing the boundaries another step forward and providing an opportunity to implement innovative encoding strategies in

work on an AI/ML-based cloud solution to optimize these sorts of conversions. “Perhaps you have a library of HD content and now wish to serve the growing number of UHD subscribers,” said Tony Jones, principal technologist for the company. “The expectation is to have a cloud-based service with GPUs to process the content because of the type of neural network in use. You just drop a file into a folder and get the UHD

converted file back out again.” Another example is Agami’s Brand Inserter, which makes quick work of inserting a branded product (such as the preserve jar in the picture on the p. 26) into video frames, thereby enhancing creative freedom to personalize content and adding a new monetization opportunity for content owners. Still further upstream are the production solutions that are leveraging the processing, storage and AI/ML tools available in the cloud to put virtualized video and audio production tools into the hands of broadcasters and those at production and post-production facilities. For example, Grass Valley’s AMPP (Agile Media Processing Platform), built on a microservices-based architecture, offers producers an ecosystem of virtualized production solutions, including AI/ ML tools, to assist in creating video with an eye towards supporting intelligent content functions like titling and closed captioning. “We have customers today

leveraging AI services within AMPP, such as speech-to-text [functionality] and text-based editing,” said Larissa Görner, senior director of AMPP PLM at Grass Valley. Sony, too, is offering its cloudbased media platform Ci where a wide variety of AI tools are contributing to intelligent content preparation, said David Rosen, vice president of cloud applications at the company.

“AI-driven transcription, metadata tagging and even highlight creation are making content more accessible and helping to get content in front of audiences faster than ever,” he said. “It has truly expanded beyond media consumption and distribution workflows into production and post production.” Further upstream still are the technologies that enable these cloud-based virtualized production and post processes to happen,

including the transport of huge media files and proxies from shoots and among facilities, such as those from Signiant. “We are a market leader in cloud I/O, moving petabytes of content every month to and from AWS, Azure and GCP,” said Jon Finegold, Signiant’s chief marketing officer. “Signiant’s unique SDCX architecture enables the creation of proxies and metadata extraction locally, which can then be moved to the cloud for processing while maintaining a linkage to the original asset.” These tools are initiating the intelligent content experience far upstream from where it ultimately matters most — with the viewer — for the benefit of both the consumer and media enterprises. “Today’s audiences have an overwhelming number of choices, so personalizing the consumer experience can help broadcasters and content owners differentiate their services,” said Geoff Stedman, chief marketing officer at SDVI. l

REALITY

ADVANCES IN PRODUCTION

AR, VR, XR and MR Create New Realms for Production From sports coverage to the lecture hall, new options abound By Susan Ashworth TV TECH

Over the last 18 months, the boom in virtual production has shaken up the way filmmakers, broadcasters, mobile video designers and more conduct their creative business. Those technologies enabling virtual production include augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), extended reality (XR) and mixed reality (MR).

FOOTBALL’S BIGGEST STAGE: Augmented reality was used on one of the biggest stages in sports when the Super Bowl LVI halftime show created a 360-degree augmented reality experience for fans to view on their mobile devices. For the event the organizers used Insta360 Pro 2 cameras from Insta360. This 360-degree camera with six F2.4 fisheye lenses includes nine-axis gyroscopes and FlowState stabilization that provides stabilization against moving scenes. The Pro 2 cameras were positioned around the stage and footage was streamed via the Verizon 5G network to a halftime show app. Within the app, fans were able to choose any of the eight different cameras around the field and pivot around the stage and field to get a 360-degree view, as if they were there. Insta360 also helped pull off the world’s first 8K live-stitched, live broadcast of an NFL game when it covered the NFL Pro Bowl in Miami in February.

JUDO STATS IN AUGMENTED REALITY: Augmented reality was a big part of the 2022 Judo Grand Prix. Held in Almada, Portugal, in February, the International Judo Federation (IJF) and wTVision joined forces to revamp the use of space, data and broadcast design during this this three-day annual event. First held in Tokyo in 1956, the event pits more than 300 competitors from 41 countries against one another. This year, real-time data and broadcast graphics were created via wTVision’s JudoStats CG alongside the R3 Space Engine rendering system. Augmented reality graphics — created by the JudoStats, R3 Space Engine and a tracking system from Stype — incorporated real-time statistics, players’ information and performance data to create an interactive environment.

38 SUNDAY | APRIL 24, 2022 | www.nabshow.com

VIRTUAL STUDIO AT WIMBLEDON: BBC Sport’s coverage of the annual Wimbledon Championships in 2021 received an upgrade with virtual reality graphics technology from Brainstorm. The BBC, in consultation with the U.K. graphics company MOOV and Brainstorm, created a virtual set studio. The studio used augmented reality graphics using Brainstorm’s InfinitySet XF/AR/VR studio application and integrated with the Epic Games creation system Unreal Engine. Focused on the goal of telling better stories through improved data and graphics, a green screen was used to create a virtual Wimbledon studio. The technology was also used to provide new and alternative camera angles, infographics and Wimbledon branding. During the event, five cameras were used in the studio, each equipped with a Brainstorm InfinitySet system with Unreal Engine. Advanced compositing features were used to create realistic real-time 3D scenes with elements that look and behave like those in the real world. “We managed to create a virtual space that allowed for a dynamic coverage of the tournament, which seamlessly combined real and virtual imagery in a way that significantly enhanced the story and audience engagement,” said Nev Appleton, director and co-founder at MOOV.

GREEN SCREEN COMES TO THE LECTURE HALL: Virtual reality is enlivening the lecture hall. The University of the Netherlands worked with Zero Density to create a massive virtual lecture hall using the company’s Reality Engine real-time broadcast compositing system. Using the virtual space, scientists and professors have access to interactive storytelling techniques and advanced visualization methods — complete with real-time realistic reflections and refractions of physical objects and people inside the green screen. Professors are able to explain complex matters on a large virtual screen or run physical experiments with immersive real-time graphics. The space employs Grass Valley LDX 86N 4K cameras alongside Mo-Sys camera tracking technology while the green screen lecture space itself runs on two Reality Engines.

LONDON WELCOMES VIRTUAL PRODUCTION: When Garden Studios in London finalized its virtual production stage in 2021, the result was a 4,800-square-foot space that could serve as a cost-effective filming option with unique creative opportunities. The new virtual production studio at Garden Studios allows filmmakers to shoot real-time virtual effects on set by using virtual graphics displayed on an LED volume (an enclosed space where motion capture and compositing can take place) to create photo-realistic backdrops. Among the technologies in place are the VP Pro XR server and StarTracker camera and lens tracking systems from Mo-Sys Engineering. Features within the VP Pro XR are an Unreal Engine editor interface and feature known as Cinematic XR Focus that allows a filmmaker to pull focus between talent or objects in the physical studio and virtual objects positioned in the LED volume. According to the company, this means that an LED volume can be used as more than just a backdrop but rather can deliver better interactivity between real and virtual elements. Jillian Sanders, virtual production coordinator for Garden Studios, said the Mo-Sys team came to the studio for a multitude of tests including displaying digital tracking markers on the studio’s LED ceiling. “We’ve also been able to assist with testing and development of their new VP Pro XR,” she said. “This exciting new tool allows for features such as digital set extensions, the ability to focus past the LED wall into the digital world, and near time rendering.”

The release enhances Dalet Flex’s end-to-end functional coverage and continuity for content preparation, packaging and delivery across traditional, digital and social platforms. The underlying poly cloud-native Dalet Flex architecture offers mobility for distributed workgroups and agility to onboard new media formats, emerging technologies and viewing platforms. Its flexible SaaS and subscription-based business models give customers the ability to expand on the fly with greater transparency over costs and budgets. The FlexXTEND for Adobe Premiere Pro features a revamped user experience that makes FlexMAM’s advanced search capabilities available to editors. Using FlexXTEND, users can trigger rendering of their Adobe Premiere Pro sequence on a remote Adobe Media Encoder, minimizing media movements and freeing up their local system for continued use.

FLOWICS DATA CONNECTOR

Connected Media|IP, West Hall | Flowics is showcasing its Flowics Data Connector add-ons for the Flowics Graphics HTML5 cloud-based broadcast graphics engine to incorporate live data integration with broadcast graphics. With data connectors, Flowics eliminates the need for custom development to parse external data and feed it to on-air graphics. That work is done by the data connectors, saving precious time, and reducing costs for broadcasters. Flowics data connectors require no hardware and no local software installation, which simplifies production workflows. What’s more, initial users report easier operation, reduced time and costs for building data-driven graphics, and even the ability to manage graphics remotely with the cloud nature of Flowics Graphics.

mitted to building innovative ways to serve creative professionals and technologists. Along with the ASC, members include equipment manufacturers such as ARRI and Canon, studios HBO and HBO Max, unions and guilds such as Society of Camera Operators and more. “NAB Show has had an ongoing partnership with ASC, and this new alliance signals our renewed commitment to the cinema industry and content creators. We look forward to presenting this unique education opportunity to our community,” said Chris Brown, NAB executive vice president and managing director, Global Connections and Events. “The Cine Consortium members are active in thinking ‘outside the box’ to present new ways

to serve the cinema community through connection, education and career building,” said spokesperson Kristen Petrovich, president of Createasphere. “The Cine Consortium in a year-round committee with subcommittees such as Education, Cine Diversity, Cine Live and others.” Stephen Lighthill, ASC, president, American Society of Cinematographers, commented, “The workshops allow our members to teach and share their expertise to a new group of filmmakers while continuing to advance the craft of the cinematographer.” “It is refreshing to be engaged with an organization like NAB as they work hard to create partnerships with industry, creating multiple high-value opportunities

at the show for delegates,” said Stosh Durbacz, national sales manager, Fujifilm and Cine Consortium member. “Having a show that appeals to multiple verticals is highly valuable to all exhibitors as we return to in-person gatherings in 2022.” The Cine Consortium also has sessions that begin today and run through Wed., 10:30–11:30 am in the Create Inspiration Theater. The topics are focused on the new production style Cine Live. There are many other cinematic panels, sessions and in-booth demonstrations. The Cine Consortium is promoting in-booth sessions that will be noted on the NAB Show site, and through social media and attendee communications. l

The PILOT Innovation Challenge Introduces 2022 Winning Teams Terry Scutt NAB SHOW DAILY

Last month, PILOT, the NAB’s technology innovation initiative, announced the winners of the 2022 PILOT Innovation Challenge. This year’s winners are Blueprint CRM from Townsquare Media, Minutes from Michigan Radio and Virtual Sportscasting Studio from Spalk. “This year’s phenomenal pool of Innovation Challenge applications offered a glimpse into the future of how we develop, consume and monetize content,” said PILOT Executive Director John Clark. “The winning entries distinguished themselves from the field with applicable, ready-to-use products that will enable broadcasters to better serve audiences immediately.” The three Innovation Challenge winners are at NAB Show to demonstrate their product to potential customers, investors and partners in exhibit space on the convention floor. BLUEPRINT CRM — TOWNSQUARE MEDIA

The Blueprint CRM is a next-generation CRM platform for broadcasters that provides a complete customer relationship management system optimized for ease of use with powerful tools for prospecting, managing relationships and garnering unique insights. “The current landscape of CRM tools that are available to broadcasters is based upon an outdated model of customer relationship management,” said

01-64_NAB22_DAY1.indd 52

Sun Sachs, senior vice president, product design & engineering at Townsquare Media, “which is not aligned with the radio business and with features that are overly complex and not relevant for the average account executive and sales manager making adoption and utilization very challenging. “With Blueprint, we took a unique approach with customer feedback creating multiple AE and manager working groups to constantly garner feedback and continually improve. To date, we have launched more than 100 iterations all based on customer feedback,” Sachs said. Sachs and Stephen Alba, Townsquare Media’s director of engineering, will discuss their product during Tuesday’s Innovation Challenge session in the Connect Innovation Zone, 11:30 a.m. to noon. The demonstration

will include a walkthrough of the Blueprint desktop and mobile applications. MINUTES – MICHIGAN RADIO

On Tuesday, Michigan Radio’s Dustin Dwyer, reporter, and Brad Gowland, digital product developer, will present Minutes, a new web-based tool that allows newsrooms to search transcripts of local government meetings, saving time on research and giving reporters the ability to create deeper, more relevant stories for audiences. “We initially built a prototype version, which generated transcripts of meetings for more than 60 cities and counties in Michigan,” said Dwyer. “So far, we’ve transcribed more than 3,000 meetings, all of which are now searchable in our database. Minutes doesn’t replace traditional reporting on local government, but it does allow us to keep up with issues when we can’t assign a reporter to a meeting. “We want to expand Minutes beyond Michigan because we’re

convinced that local government meetings make up one of the largest, and most valuable, sources of public data in the U.S.,” he said. “Minutes isn’t just a new way for journalists to cover local government. It’s a new way of thinking about local government data, to unlock the insights in public meetings and make it searchable for everyone.” Dwyer also will be featured during Tuesday’s Innovation Challenge session in the Connect Innovation Zone, 11:30 a.m. to noon. “We’ll be demoing the latest version of our site at searchminutes.com, and we’re excited to meet with anyone who is interested in using insights from local government meetings to learn more about their communities,” said Dwyer. APANTAC SDM INTERFACES

N5406 | In partnership with Intel, Apantac has built a series of SDM interfaces based on the Intel Smart Display Module (SDM) platform. These modules plug directly into a designated slot on SDM-compatible displays, eliminating the need for external adapter boxes, power supplies and mounting hardware. Apantac SDM interfaces (cards) accept various input formats: 12G SDI, SDVoE, NDI, HDMI 2.0 over HDBaseT and converts them into an HDMI 2.0 signal usable by a monitor equipped with an Intel SDM slot. Simply slot the Apantac interfaces into an SDM-capable display for maximum flexibility in your video wall or display application. Because they draw power from the display and deliver their signals directly via an internal PCI-E connector, these modules eliminate the need for external power or external mounting enclosures.

Is Consolidation Inevitable for Streaming? Survey says 60% of viewers are tired of signing up for multiple OTT services By Addie Morfoot BROADCASTING+CABLE

There is no denying that the OTT market is booming. But the onslaught of new streaming services entering the market has led to consumer fatigue. Viewers are not only overwhelmed by the bevy of content being offered, but they are also tired of paying for multiple services, which begs the question: Will OTT consolidation be the wave of the future? DISCOVERY ACQUIRES WARNERMEDIA

Discovery’s $43 billion acquisition of WarnerMedia from AT&T could be an indication that it is. Under the deal, which will lead

01-64_NAB22_DAY1.indd 54

to the creation of Warner Bros. Discovery, two streaming services — WarnerMedia’s HBO Max and Discovery Plus — will eventually merge into a single direct-to-consumer platform. The merger marks the first time that two top-tier streaming services have consolidated. On March 14 during the Deutsche Bank 30th Annual Media, Internet & Telecom Conference, Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels, who will also serve as CFO of the newly combined Warner Bros. Discovery, explained that the merger of the two platforms was a no-brainer. “We have HBO Max with a more premium male-skewing positioning, and then you’ve got

the female positioning on the Discovery side,” Wiedenfels said. “You’ve got the daily engagement that people enjoy with Discovery content versus the event-driven nature of the HBO Max content. Take that together, I have no doubt that we will be creating one of the most complete four-quadrant old, young, male, female product out there.” While it will take months to meld the two services, it’s a seminal merger that could create the blueprint for future OTT unions. “Consolidation is unequivocally going to happen,” said Scott Schiller, global chief commercial officer of the Engine Group, a global advertising and marketing services firm. “It has

to happen. It is the natural transition of going through the life cycle curve of an industry that’s affected by technology. There were 300 auto companies in the 1920s and only the best survived. When I say ‘the best,’ the ones

that listen to consumers and can pivot quickly.” IS CONSUMER FATIGUE A THING?

In recent years consumers went from having a sole Netflix subscription to having to determine if they also wanted to subscribe to new premium OTT services such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+,

TO LEARN MORE The Show Floor A number of exhibitors are on the show floor with products to help broadcasters, content creators and even educators discover what they need to know about streaming. On the show floor this morning, the session “The Powerhouse of Edutainment — A Conversation With PBS” will take place in the Capitalize Experiential Zone (N5628), 10:30 a.m. This fireside chat with Ira Rubenstein, Chief Digital Officer & CMO for PBS, will look at how PBS has leveraged new models of education as content to become a streaming juggernaut across web, mobile and connected device platforms and generating millions of streams on social channels. During Monday’s session “How to Build a Compact LIVE Streaming Kit,” content creator Joseph Linaschke will help attendees explore low-cost, compact streaming solutions, for those who want to focus on quality without breaking the bank or taking over your entire living room. The session will be held in the Connect Experiential Zone (W6428), 1:45 p.m. There are also several sessions in the CM|IP Theater in the West Hall. The sessions listed here are open to all.

HBO Max, Paramount+ and Peacock. But, according to global survey data from Apester, a digital content platform, more than 60 percent of OTT consumers are tired of signing up for new streaming services. The same survey revealed that only 16.5 percent appreciate the multitude of options when it comes to the streaming video market. “We are watching consumer fatigue very closely,” said Dan Rayburn, principal analyst, Frost & Sullivan. “There are so many choices out there for consumers, which is great, but at the same time, your average consumer can’t afford, or they’re not willing to take so many subscriptions. So that’s why you see consumers start and stop subscriptions all the time.”

Consolidation is unequivocally going to happen.” SCOTT SCHILLER ENGINE GROUP

But Rayburn doesn’t think that consumer fatigue will be cured by the consolidation of major streaming services any time soon. “There can be lots of consolidation,” Rayburn said. “We’re seeing vendors consolidate left and right. That doesn’t mean we’re seeing OTT platforms consolidate because, who can consolidate? Disney’s not going to buy Apple or Microsoft or Google. So, there’s not companies left to consolidate. There are one or two companies (who can merge) at most and that’s it.” While Disney might never consolidate, the global media conglomerate has reimagined their streaming services as outlets to release movies. Pixar’s “Soul” and “Luca” skipped cinemas and were instead released straight to Disney+ in late 2020 and mid-2021 respectively. While the pandemic most likely influenced the release strategy of both animated films, Disney recently put Pixar’s “Turning Red” directly

on Disney+ despite significant COVID-19 restriction lifts. The decision was surprising since Disney recently gave live-action releases like “West Side Story,” Marvel’s “Eternals” and “ShangChi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” extended theatrical-exclusive releases. Placing Pixar movies directly on an OTT platform was a strategic move according to Schiller. It helped build subscribership while also keeping current subscribers happy. Schiller added, “Releasing Pixar films in that fashion also says, ‘Hello, exhibitors. You have to realize that I need this streaming platform and your platform.’ We have to find a happy medium. The employees and the industry want the largest audience but in this phase of the evolution of the revenue model from traditional to more diverse, there’re going to be pain points.” Still in its evolution, pain points related to streaming services are inevitable but one problem the OTT industry is currently facing is how to grow live sports-related content. “Every single major streamer will have live components in a matter of time,” said Schiller. It’s essential because it’s what consumers want.” In March, Apple obtained exclusive rights to telecast two “Friday Night Baseball” games each week via AppleTV+. The streaming service was the latest OTT to get in on the live sports market. Both Hulu and HBO Max stream some live NHL games, while Amazon has rights to stream the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football.” But, according to Rayburn, when it comes to live sports linear broadcasting services still have the upper hand. “The companies that pay the most money (for licensing rights) are the broadcast networks because without live sports, the broadcast networks would struggle because why would you keep your cable TV?” Rayburn said. “You wouldn’t.” l

with faculty and students at the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University to produce high-quality, remote commentary and play-byplay to broadcast live sporting events on their channels. This allows local broadcasters to produce COVID-19 safe, low-cost, high-quality content, leading to expanded local sports coverage and new revenue opportunities. “Spalk’s Virtual Commentary Studio allows broadcasters and sports leagues to remotely produce commentary on their live sports broadcasts” said Ben Reynolds, co-founder and CEO at Spalk. “This helps our customers save as much as 80 percent of their production costs related to commentary — as travel to the stadium or studio is no longer required — as well as opening up new commercial opportunities through alternate or multi-lingual commentary on their live events.” In 2021, Spalk covered more than 7,000 live sports broadcasts for customers like the NFL, Six Nations & MotoGP. “In the case of a customer like the NFL,” said Reynolds, “we produced German, Japanese and Spanish commentary for their NFL Game Pass OTT product to help them grow audience in local markets around the world.” Reynolds will share Virtual Commentary Studio with attendees during today’s Innovation Challenge session in the Connect Innovation Zone, 3–3:30 p.m. “I’m looking forward to sharing more detail about how remote production, especially of sports commentary, can lower production costs and grow audiences for live sports content,” Reynolds said. l

The addition of predictive capability brings greater efficiency to fast-paced and often chaotic environments. Launched earlier this year, FastNAS Generation 2 now delivers a 1000 percent boost in capability, with up to 4 GBps real deliverable network performance. Designed for scenarios that combine on-premise and cloud content, the new Unify Hub data management system is available as a standalone solution or as a software upgrade to existing GB Labs appliances.

W3517 | TAG Video Systems is demonstrating the MCS, the newest layer of the company’s Realtime Media Performance (RMP) Platform. It enables clients to capture the data provided by over 400 distinct error detectors to be aggregated and correlated across the entire media supply chain (from live production to playout, OTT and delivery). Media companies can now manage the entire monitoring stack, end-to-end within one system, that in turn will provide invaluable insights for optimum workflow performance. Using an open-source paradigm, the MCS serves as an aggregation engine capable of exposing the data collected by TAG’s Multi-Channel Monitoring (MCM) to standard third-party analytic and visualization applications such as Elasticsearch, Kibana, Grafana and Prometheus. This solution will enable companies to adapt to the rapid pace of change in technology and enable overall better business operations.

Hiring diverse talent brings new viewpoints, strategies

The media and entertainment industry has taken multiple steps in recent years to diversify its workforce. The first step has been to examine internal procedures even before a single résumé crosses the hiring desk. Words matter and how an advertisement for a broadcast position is written impacts not only who is ultimately hired, but who even considers applying for the posting. Today’s NAB Diversity Symposium, held for the first time

virtually last fall, will provide strategies for those in the media and entertainment industry looking at their diversity, inclusion and equity processes in the workforce. LANDING THE BEST

The symposium’s overarching theme will focus on the topic of recruitment, but sessions and speakers will probe the entire hiring process, not just how to land the best talent, said Michelle Duke, president of the NAB Leadership Foundation and NAB’s chief diversity officer. “We’ll really dig into recruitment and talk about what steps

you might be overlooking and, therefore, not attracting the talent that you are seeking as it relates to diverse talent,” Duke said. Another key element of the symposium will be tapping into the brainwork of some existing organizations that already have their foot in the door with prospective candidates or future prospective candidates, such as college students. These types of organizations include the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the American Association of Colleges and Universities. “What is it that [employers] need to do to build those pipelines so they have a shot at attracting

skirting jobs in management or breaking into what was a seemingly unattainable position have new communities to lean on for support. A representative from #GALSNGEAR, an organization that supports women in the industry

TO LEARN MORE Along with #GALSNGEAR, there are other organizations to reach out to. Women in Film & Video Sara Barger, current president of Women in Film & Video, agrees with the communityaspect to networking and finding opportunities for all women in the media and entertainment industry. “Just getting your foot in the door and knowing that ‘Oh wait, I can sign up for this major in college,’” Barger said. “Representation is really important. If you don’t see any other female sound hacks out there, if you don’t see any other female grips, you’ll never think to yourself, ‘Wow, that’s something I can do.’” People of all genders are welcome to join Women in Film & Video, she said. A new mentoring program started this year has afforded the organization the chance to diversify speakers at these events. Rise Rise is a growing worldwide mentoring organization supporting women in the media technology sector. Their goal is to achieve a diverse and gender-balanced workforce across the broadcast media and entertainment industry, specifically within the areas of engineering, technical operations, sales, marketing and business. through educational opportunities, mentoring, public speaking, technical training and networking events, said more women than ever are seeking positions that were traditionally male-dominated. These include production and post-production jobs such as cinematographer, post producer and unscripted and documentary editors. However, women are still few and far between in visual effects design, narrative editing, sound design and technical director positions. “At #GALSNGEAR we have worked with university programs across the country with simple strategies to be more inclusive around technical training and access to gear and helping them bring in tech-savvy speakers — who happen to be women — and can inspire the next generation of makers,” said Amy DeLouise, chief executive officer of DeLouise Enterprises LLC and founder of #GALSNGEAR. Community helps support not only up-and-coming novices in the media and entertainment industry

but anyone at any point in their career, DeLouise said. #GALSNGEAR is teaming up with NAB Show, Marvel and NVIDIA Omniverse to present today’s 4–6 p.m. session, “Omniverse Meets Multiverse: Remote Workflows, Creative Results with #GALSNGEAR.” The session, held in the Create Inspiration Zone and open to all, will take a hard look at how working remotely has created innovative results. “Storytelling has not just been changed by necessity during the pandemic, but now new creative and collaborative opportunities have emerged,” DeLouise said. The innovation of blockchain technology in the content supply chain will be touched upon, and how customized, enhanced content is something to look for in the future, DeLouise said. Two years ago, #GALSNGEAR launched a leadership program to help companies accelerate women’s leadership skills and networks. The collaboration continues during NAB Show on Tuesday with the one-day #GAL-

SNGEAR Women’s Leadership Summit, which requires prior registration. “We know the pandemic exacerbated the ‘broken rung’ — women in early management jobs missing out on promotions — especially for women of color,” DeLouise said, citing 3.5 million women who dropped out of the workforce during COVID-19. The day will focus on three key areas of leadership style, leadership brand and industry trends that affect leadership decisions, DeLouise said. Highlights of the day will be a discussion by Ellyn McKay, founder of CEO Vision, walking attendees through the “8 Dimensions of Leadership.” “No one style can take you all the way to success, so the workshop will unlock ways to develop cross-style leadership strength,” DeLouise said. During the Women’s Leadership Summit, DeLouise and McKay will be joined by Eva Jannotta, who will lead a thought leadership discussion on building a professional brand. l

Fast and Flexible Post Production

URSA Mini Pro 12K gives you the benefits of shooting with film including amazing detail, wide dynamic range and rich, full RGB color. Incredible definition around objects makes it ideal for working with green screen and VFX including compositing live action and CGI. Super sampling at 12K means you get better color and resolution at 8K as well as smooth antialiased edges.

The URSA Mini Pro 12K sensor has a resolution of 12,288 x 6480, 14 stops of dynamic range and a native ISO of 800. Featuring equal amounts of red, green and blue pixels, the sensor is optimized for images at multiple resolutions. You can shoot 12K at 60 fps or use in-sensor scaling to allow 8K or 4K RAW at up to 120 fps without cropping or changing your field of view.

Blackmagic RAW makes cinema quality 12-bit, 80 megapixel images at up to 60 frames a reality! Constant quality encoding options adapt compression to match the detail of the scene. Constant bitrate gives you the best possible images at a consistent file size. You can record to two cards simultaneously so you can shoot high frame rate 12K or 8K on CFast or UHS-II cards.

Shooting RAW in 12K preserves the deepest control of detail, exposure and color during post. Best of all, Blackmagic RAW is designed to accelerate 12K for post production, so it’s as easy to work with as standard HD or Ultra HD files. Blackmagic RAW stores metadata, lens data, white balance, digital slate information and custom LUTs to ensure consistency of image on set and in post. *Camera shown with optional accessories and lens.
