INTERSTELLAR The McConauhaisance continues with his starring role in Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic‌

W

hen Ăźber-cool director Christopher Nolan, orchestrator of The Dark Knight Trilogy, makes a new film, it's always a big event and one cloaked in the utmost secrecy until the last possible moment. And so it is with Interstellar, Nolan's sure-tobe blockbusting sci-fi epic. Details are scant relating to this right now, but what we do know is that there's enough talent involved to pique the interest of even the most jaded film fan. Nolan stalwarts Caine and

Hathaway are in for a start, plus the ever impressive Casey Affleck, but it's the tantalising prospect of McConaughey that has us most excited. As Cooper, he plays 'an educated man, a trained pilot and an engineer', living on an Earth that's fast running out of food. So Caine convinces Cooper to go into space to travel through a wormhole with a crew of likeminded explorers. Obviously! Who knows where it will all end? But it's sure to be as incredible as it sounds, so go to YouTube/ODEONUK for the latest trailer.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT… HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PT.1 1 This film is the first of two that will make up the finale to the The Hunger Games films, and splits the final installment from the book trilogy, Mockingjay, into two. 2 The story continues following reluctant hero and symbol of hope, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who wakes up in District 13 after the world-changing events of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Lawrence said of Katniss that she, 'has to adjust to a completely different life, one in which she's barely able to keep it together.' 3 Sadly, this was the last film for Philip Seymour Hoffman, who passed away before filming completed. Hoffman had finished all of his work as rebellion leader Plutarch Heavensbee however, and it is sure to be a great turn. 4 Julianne Moore took the part of District 13 president – and ultimate head of the rebellion – as her two children are both huge fans of the novels. 5 Mockingjay Part 1 is slated for release on 20 November this year, and Part 2 is scheduled for exactly the same date in 2015. A long but no doubt exciting wait!

FROM THE CREATORS OF BBC HIT SHOW OUTNUMBERED COMES THIS HEART WARMING BRITISH COMEDY…

W

e can all relate to keeping secrets from other family members and, sometimes, hoping the kids won’t spill the beans can become even more stressful than the secrets themselves! This very funny British take on that family dynamic takes place on a trip to Scotland, to visit Granddad on his birthday… Firstly, the cast is enticing enough on its own here, with David Tennant as Doug McLeod, Rosamund Pike playing his fun-loving wife Abi, and then there's the legendary 'Big Yin' himself, Billy Connolly, who's birthday party they all travel up for. We can never get

enough of Connolly's acting performances, and this looks to be up there with his best outings. But as you'd imagine

with this film coming from the makers of the huge hit TV show Outnumbered, it's actually the breakout young child cast that's particularly strong, and who provide many of the laugh-out-loud moments throughout. Just search for the trailers now to see how it's revealed that the parents are actually quite different behind closed doors… Ah the exquisite uncomfortableness of it all! What We Did On Our Holiday lands in cinemas on September 26, and is a comedic family adventure that will delight as much as the absolutely brilliant Outnumbered did for countless families. Benedict Cumberbatch stars in this World War II Enigma code thriller… Based on the true story of legendary cryptanalyst Alan Turing (Cumberbatch), this film looks not only at the race against time that he and his brilliant team faced in cracking the Enigma code during WWII, but also at his awful subsequent treatment by the British government. Something which Cumberbatch described as, 'a really shameful, disgraceful part of our history.' The Imitation Game hits cinemas on 14 November.

T

om Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Locke, Lawless) has a star very much in the ascension right now, and he's to be applauded for not choosing the straight-up Hollwood blockbuster roles that he's surely being offered. The Drop looks like a proper, gritty,

grown-up drama, with Hardy playing a lonely bartender who finds himself in the middle of a robbery gone awry. This film will also drive home how missed James Gandolfini (The Sopranos) is, putting in a star turn as Hardy's underworld boss. The Drop opens 14 November.

Chances are that you know how this story goes, when a young Peruvian bear with a large passion for all things British – and an admirable weakness for marmalade – travels all the way to London in search of somewhere that he can call home. The Book

The most enchanting animated fantasy of the year takes you to worlds

B

rought to you by Guillermo del Toro, the visionary behind the likes of Hellboy, Pacific Rim and Pan's Labyrinth, The Book of Life is the most visually stunning film in years, with a colourful cast of characters that are voiced by some truly intriguing actors. With the likes of Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, Magic Mike) as Joaquin, Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek) as Maria, Diego Luna (Y tu mamá también, Milk) as Manolo and Christina Applegate (Mars Attacks!, Anchorman) as Mary Beth, plus a host of other greats, you know you're in for a real treat. The story is loosely based around the Mexican Day of the Dead festival, and follows the fantastical journey of Manolo (Luna),

a man torn between pleasing his family or chasing the love of his life. Manolo then attracts the attentions of the spirits La Muerte (Kate del Castillo) and Xibalba (Ron Perlman) who decide to bet on his fate – a fate which is somewhat altered by Xibalba who tries to tip the balance in his own favour by having a snake kill Manolo… But this isn't the end for our hero. It leaves him in a precarious yet incredible situation, as he embarks on a journey that spans three magical worlds and sees him facing his greatest fears. All IN THE ART You'll see from the trailer – and this issue's cover – quite how amazing and vibrant the visual style of this film is. It very deliberately sticks to the pre-production concepts in the ‘Art of ’ book. Keeping to those concepts was something that director Jorge Gutierrez pushed right from the very beginning: “My biggest heartbreak is that I see all this glorious art [for other films], and then the movie doesn't look like that! The mandate of

of Life never before seen. Here's what to expect… this movie was: 'our Art of… book is going to look exactly like the movie. Every artist poured their heart and soul into that.” Tatum found that aspect of the film particularly enticing: “These guys are artists of the highest regard,” he said.

THE DAY OF THE DEAD At the most recent Comic Con event, The Book of Life panel featured most of the big names from this film, where Perlman was passionate about it not only as a visual spectacle but also as way of sharing a big part of Mexican culture: “When I did my first movie with Guillermo (Cronos) I was introduced to the concept of The Day of the Dead. That [idea] is a beautiful relationship between the living and the dead,” he said. “You demystify it and celebrate it in a way where you bring beauty to it. To be able to be part of a film that's going to introduce that to little kids, that's dazzling!” You can go and search on YouTube.com/ ODEONUK now to see The Book of Life trailer – you won't be disappointed!

Kingsman THE SECRET SECRET SERVICE

After shaking up the superhero genre with KickAss and revitalising X-Men, Director Matthew Vaughn has spy movies in sights…

D

irector Matthew Vaughn loves to play with convention. This is the man who persuaded Taxi Driver himself, Robert De Niro, to wear women's underwear in Stardust.. It was Vaughn who, along with comic book legend Mark Millar, turned the superhero genre on its head with Kick-Ass. And now, with Kingsman: The Secret Service – another collaboration with Millar and inspired by his brilliant comic book, The Secret Service – Vaughn is turning his playful, but always respectful, eye on spy films. Y'see, the thing about spy films, is that they have gotten understandably – if a little relentlessly – hard-edged and serious. The humour that once peppered filmgoers' favourite espionage flicks has all but gone. So Vaughn and Millar were chatting about this one day and decided to do something about it. Kingsman: The Secret Service is their spook film wish list made real: a full-fat action 12 ODEON.CO.UK

film first, but with its tongue lodged firmly in its cheek. The premise is an inspired fusion of classic-era Bond, gentleman

espionage and, well, something a little bit more street. Colin Firth plays Harry Hart, codename Galahad – a member of Kingsman, an independent international intelligence agency (think a privatelyfunded MI6) founded after WWI by wealthy gentlemen

tired of seeing their sons sent to war. Believing that they couldn't trust the government to do the right thing they created the Kingsman (named after the tailors where they first met) to protect the nation's interests. Fast forward to the present day and Kingsman's elite membership of ten 'knights' is looking for a new recruit. Alongside the expected monied and privileged young potentials fielded by the other members, Hart introduces a wild card in the form of Eggsy (Taron Egerton), a clever and resourceful but completely off-the-rails delinquent from a rough, London sink estate.

IF THE BURBERRY CAP FITS…

It's the culture shock caused by the rough and initially incredulous Eggy's uneasy immersion in Kingsman's gentleman-spy values during the potential recruits' training that gives the film many of its biggest laughs, but it reveals a big heart underpinning the

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE Special Preview story, too. Hart's unwavering belief in his protégé's potential, even when the rest of Kingsman's members doubt it, is never sugary or overdone – a real testament not only to Firth and Egerton's finely-tuned performances, but also to Vaughn's skill as a director. The result is a cut above your usual big-screen blockbuster – insane amounts of bang for your buck, plus ample reason to care about the characters caught in the middle of all of the massive and impressive pyrotechnics.

Underneath this normal looking suit hides a top super spy…

COLIN ALL HEROES!

Ooooh it'll take ages to get those fingerprints off that mirror.

Watch the trailer

The filmmakers aren't done confounding the audience's expectations with Eggsy's fish-out-of-water story either. While Firth's Hart is the experienced mentor to this unlikely spy in training, he's clearly still at the top of his game as an ass-panning secret agent. A fact underlined by Vaughn's insistence that the actor, more used to action-free roles in the likes of The King's Speech and (ironically) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, undergo six months of intensive physical training with a Thai kick boxing champ, stuntman, Olympic gold medal gymnast and a martial arts tough nut who's previously given Jackie Chan a run for his money. Firth enthusiastically took up the challenge, chipping a tooth during filming, proudly developing what he calls a ‘one pack’, and also getting in tune with his inner action hero. All of this comes across on-screen in spades in a film full of surprises and one that's set to leave the jaded spy genre shaken and very much stirred. Check the trailer now! FANATICAL ABOUT FILM 13

The Rewrite

HUGH GRANT AND MARISA TOMEI REWRITE THE SCRIPT OF THEIR LIVES IN THIS CHARMING, HILARIOUS ROM-COM…

S

creenwriter Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant) had it all. A hit movie, a Golden Globe award, a beautiful wife, a cute son – he was on top of the world. But that was 15 years ago. Now he's divorced, almost 50, hasn't written a hit in years and is close to broke. His life needs a rewrite. Keith flees Hollywood for what he thinks will be a cushy teaching job in New York allowing him to pay the bills and write his next masterpiece on the side. But, as it tends to, life gets in the way. Soon he's surprisingly

attached to his students, bonding with colleagues and inexplicably drawn to a single mom (Marisa Tomei) working two jobs to earn her degree – together they have a second chance to rewrite the next chapter of their lives. Will they take it? Hugh Grant, the reigning king of smash-hit romantic comedies (Four Weddings, Notting Hill, Love Actually, Bridget Jones' Diary to name a few) is joined by Oscar-winning Marisa Tomei and multiple Golden Globe winner Alison Janney to head up a dream rom-com cast.

This is the fourth collaboration between Hugh Grant and director Marc Lawrence following on from the success of Two Weeks Notice, Music and Lyrics and Did You Hear About the Morgans? and looks set to be their funniest and most charming yet. And they're clearly thrilled to be working together again: "I just can't imagine anyone doing this part better," Marc told us. The Rewrite is going to be the perfect Autumn feel good treat and will be released on 10 October. FANATICAL ABOUT FILM 15

ow far would you go to spice up a ten-year marriage that’s got into a bit of a rut? How about creating a deeply private sex tape only for your iPad to automatically sync it to The Cloud and share it with an unwitting bunch of your nearest and dearest? It’s certainly one way to liven things up, and it's the premise of this near-theknuckle, feel-good comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel. With their evening of experimental passion downloaded as gifts for family and friends, the 16 ODEON.CO.UK

pair set off on a hilarious, night-long mission to retrieve all the tablets before personal embarrassment turns into very public humiliation. Diaz, Segel and director Jake Kasden have proven cinematic chemistry, having worked together before on the superb Bad Teacher, which mined a similar vein (no pun intended. Well, maybe…) of gleefully outrageous humour. Ably supported by the likes of Rob Lowe, Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine) and Ellie Kemper (Bridesmaids) Sex Tape is face-plant cringe comedy at its best.

There are two things you can say with absolute certainty about this franchise reboot for the world’s premier quartet of amphibious martial artists: firstly, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been crying out for the current generation of state-of -the-art CGI to bring them to life properly. And secondly, from the looks of it Leo, Donnie, Mike and Raphael must have been guzzling protein shakes along with their pepperoni pizzas to get this bodaciously ripped. But that’s new TMNT for you all over. From William Fichtner’s cyborg samurai Shredder to Megan Fox’s casting as ace reporter April O’Neill, everything about this incarnation of the turtles is harder, tougher, sexier and generally turned all the way up for maximum effect. Not that the TMNTs are getting all po-faced and Taken on us – they’re still the wisecracking, skateboard-loving dudes that they always were. Some things never change.

The latest wildly creative cheese dream of a movie from the guys behind Coraline and ParaNorman is a visually stunning, super-stylised stop-animation/CGI hybrid.

The Boxtrolls are pink-nosed scavengers who live in the shadows of the Victorian-era town of Cheesebridge, hiding in plain sight, and creating marvellous inventions from the humans’ trash. MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT TBC RELEASED 19 SEPTEMBER DIRECTOR Woody Allen STARRING Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Marcia Gay Harden

After the brilliant, bruising, Oscar-decorated Blue Jasmine, Woody Allen returns to out and out comedy with this breezy tale of Stanley, a British master illusionist (Colin Firth) sent to the French Riveria to debunk a fraudulent

spiritualist, Sophie, (Emma Stone in her kooky, charismatic element) who may or may not be preying on a minted family with her unerringly accurate insights and predictions. But as Stanley observes Sophie at work and tries to catch her out, he falls, not only for her story, but for Sophie herself. Could she be the real thing after all, or is Stanley just one more victim of this

charming stranger? Woody Allen has visited the 1920s-1930s before with great success – Bullets Over Broadway, and Sweet And Lowdown. Not only does Magic In The Moonlight ooze spot-on period detail but, soused as it is with quickfire dialogue and Allen’s unique talent for slowburning human folly, this feels like a welcome shot of vintage Allen.

Billy Connolly plus the writers of Outnumbered? Every bit as brilliant as that sounds.

DIRECTORS Andy Hamilton, Guy Jenkin STARRING Rosamund Pike, David Tennant, Billy Connolly

Written and directed by the guys behind brilliantly sharp BBC sitcom Outnumbered, What We Did On Our Holiday does a similarly bang-on job of sending up the bizarre behaviour and tangled relationships in the average modern family. Set during a family summer holiday for Doug (David Tennant), Abi (Rosamund Pike) and their three kids to the Highlands to celebrate grandpa Gordie’s (Billy Connolly) birthday, tensions 24 ODEON.CO.UK

rise as the extended family bicker, kids unintentionally reveal family secrets, and everything goes hilariously and wonderfully awry. With a fantastic cast across the board (including a great

performance by Ben Miller as Doug’s overbearing brother), the real stars are newcomers Bobby Smalldridge, Amelia Bullmore and Emilia Jones as the kids, who deliver some of the best lines in the movie.

DIRECTOR Anton Corbijn STARRING Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, Philip Seymour Hoffman

If there’s ever a pointed reminder of just what an incredible actor we’ve lost in Philip Seymour Hoffman, this tense, intelligent thriller is it.

Based on John Le Carré’s novel, and with a Tinker, Tailor Soldier, Spy meets Bourne vibe, A Most Wanted Man follows a jaded intelligence expert (Hoffman) as he tries to cultivate contacts in Hamburg’s Islamic community that can shed light on a newly-arrived refugee who may or may not be a threat to national security.

BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP TBC RELEASED 5 SEPTEMBER DIRECTOR Rowan Joffe STARRING Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, Mark Strong

We can’t remember how many brilliant thrillers there have been with amnesiac heroes, but Before I Go To Sleep gives us the best Memento flashbacks we’ve had in years. Nicole Kidman

plays a woman whose memory effectively resets every day she awakes. When a psychiatrist (Mark Strong) gets in touch and lets her see a video diary she made in therapy, she starts to realise her memory loss stems from a harrowing event that has her questioning the few certainties and loved ones she has.
