hen the doors of a lift creak open, Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) awakens inside remembering nothing but his name – and that's the least of his worries! Emerging into a walled encampment, Thomas finds 60 other teen boys that are surrounded by a vast stone maze from which no one has ever escaped. 4 odeon.co.uk

The original group have been trapped in 'The Glade' for two years and like Thomas, don't know why or how they came to be there. What they do know is that every morning, the entrance to the maze slides menacingly open and within its walls are The Grievers, nightmarish creatures who will stop at nothing to prevent the boys

escaping. Yet from the moment Thomas turns up, everything starts to change. Based on the bestselling novel by James Dashner, this post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller is edge-of-the-seat stuff and ramps up the action thrills. It looks like it's going to be a truly epic saga. things you need to know about… The Equalizer 1 The Equalizer is a big screen adaptation of the US TV hit that ran from 1985 to 1989, starring Edward Woodward (or Ed3Woods as we like to call him). 2 The plot follows a former black ops commando with a mysterious past (Denzel Washington) who reluctantly comes out of retirement to rescue a young girl who is under the control of brutal Russian gangsters. 3 Russell Crowe was originally attached to the lead role in The Equalizer before Denzel Washington was confirmed as the lead, bringing with him director Antoine Fuqua. The two successfully collaborated on 2001's brilliant Training Day. 4 Eminem chose The Equalizer's trailer to debut his new song as the soundtrack – a second collaboration with Sia. (Search 'ODEONUK' on YouTube.) 5 Even though The Equalizer hasn't been released yet, plans for a sequel have been officially announced and it's being furiously written as we write this, which is always a good sign.

The Equalizer is released on 26 September.

he Expendables are back, with bigger names and bigger weapons than ever before. This time around, Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and the gang find themselves squaring off with an Expendables' founding member, Conrad Stonebanks – played by the legend Mel Gibson – who plans to break up the team. Permanently. Gibson's not the only new face along for the ride, there's a host of others, most notably Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford and Antonio Banderas. But

happily the fan favourites also remain, like Jason Statham's Lee Christmas, Arnold Schwarzenegger's Trench and, of course, Terry Crews as Hale Caesar: “It’s the biggest, most gigantic, action-packed, action-star movie of all time!” the latter exclaims. As excitable about the film as he is, Crews still remains humble when surrounded by such big co-stars. “You see Sly there with a cigar, you see Arnold looking at his biceps (laughs). You realise where you are – these guys are the new royalty!”

Like all of us, there's something about that royalty that Crews really wants to see: “Mel versus Sly. That’s what I wanna see. I wasn’t privy to it on set. People wanna see how bad Mel could be… it’s one of the coolest match-ups ever!” ONE-UPMANSHIP With those names comes a big competitive side too: “It’s always like that! But you’re talking about guys who have gotten older and have faced a lot of humbling in different ways, you know what I mean? The Expendables are all of us

are back! We caught up with Terry Crews for some exclusive inside info… guys with bad credit who somehow got the chance to get another chance. That’s what it is! When you look at what happened with Mel, when people wrote him off in a lot of ways, this is his comeback. This is Wesley’s comeback… It’s a wild thing when you see that you can’t just put these guys out. They always want to come back. You can’t take talent: it’s always there, no matter what the circumstances.” This installment is billed as the last go around, but Crews isn't so sure of that: “It’s a worldwide hit. The world is

ready for this one, and they get bigger and better – I feel four on the horizon!” ONE LAST RIDE As you'll see from the image below, this is a film to be enjoyed: “It shows how fun these movies are. We could all give our badass scowl, but the thing is, it’s really not a dark deal, it’s a celebration! It’s celebrating a bygone era. It’s like watching a great Western. An action movie is part of our culture.” Turn to pg23 for even more Expendables 3, and pg26 for a classic red carpet shot.

Sin City:

A Dame to Kill For Photo: © 2014 The Weinstein Company.

The sequel to Sin City's tour de force has been nine years in the making, and now that it's finally here there is a lot to look forward to… WHAT'S THE STORY?

The follow-up to 2005's Sin City is only a sequel in the loosest sense, as a few of this film's four compartmentalised stories are actually prequels to the first film (are you still with us?). Two of those tales appeared in co-director Frank Miller's original comic books – Just Another Saturday Night and A Dame to Kill For – which he's written into this screenplay, along with the never before published The Long, Bad Night and The Fat Loss.

WHO'S RETURNING?

Quite a few characters are back, only you won't necessarily recognise them! Josh Brolin now plays Dwight McCarthy, with his story explaining what leads up to the facial surgery that results in him looking like Clive Owen for the first film. From what we can tell, this is largely due to his former lover, Eva Green's new femme fatale Ava Lord, who needs Dwight's help. Her intentions, as you'd imagine, turn out to be far less pure than they first appear. Jeremy Mr Selfridge Piven turns up here too, replacing Michael Madsen as Bob.

COME ON, WHAT ABOUT tough guy MARV?

Yes, don't worry, Mickey Rourke is back as Marv, who awakes during events of the first film at the side of the road, surrounded by dead bodies. Bruce Willis returns too, as cool cop John Hartigan – in ghost form this time around – driving Jessica Alba's Nancy Callahan forward to vengeance upon Senator Roark (Powers Boothe). Co-director Robert Rodriguez originally wanted Johnny Depp to star, but he had to decline due to scheduling conflicts, so Joseph Gordon-Levitt now fills those shoes, playing cocky gambler Johnny. He is about to find himself in some serious hot water! You'll also see appearances from Ray Liotta, Christopher Lloyd, Rosario Dawson, and even a certain Lady Gaga. Phew, amazing cast!

I SHOULD SEE THE TRAILER THEN?

Absolutely yes! When you've watched it you'll be champing at the bit to dive back into the comic book noir delights. Head on over to: YouTube.com/ODEONUK  to check it out right now. fanatical about film 17

his action-packed space adventure expands the Marvel cinematic universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself hunted after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. To evade capture, Quill forms an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a 20 odeon.co.uk

Guardians of the Galaxy, which first appeared in Marvel Super-heroes #18 (published January 1969), features a host of big names including Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot and Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket. James Gunn directs, while the legendary Stan Lee – now into his 91st year –

STEP UP: ALL IN TBC released 1 AUGUST

DIRECTOR Trish Sie STARRING Alyson Stoner, Briana Evigan, Ryan Guzman, Izabella Miko

Step Up: All In sees all the stars from the previous four outings of the franchise coming together for one huge, winnertakes-all dance-off in the heady

heights of Las Vegas, which is enough to tempt dancers from all over the Step Up world to form a crew, with a three year Vegas' residency being the prize. This film is aiming to pull out all of the stops, and the set for the competition alone – ominously named 'The Vortex' – looks big enough to fit

everyone from the other films on screen in one go. Think Britain's Got Talent meets The Fast and the Furious – only replace the fast cars with slick dance moves instead (and we're pretty sure that Vin Diesel isn't in this). Step Up: All In looks all set to be a school holiday favourite.

PLANES: FIRE AND RESCUE TBC RELEASED 8 AUGUST

DIRECTOR Roberts Gannaway VOICES OF Ed Harris, Julie Bowen, Stacy Keach, Dane Cook, Wes Studi

The lovable Dusty Crophopper (Dane Cook) returns for the high-flying follow-up to hit animation Planes – a sort-of spin-off from the Disney/Pixar collaboration Cars. This time around, engine damage means the one-time world famous air racer must switch careers, and what better than joining the firefighting squad? A new host of characters including spirited Lil' Dipper (Julie Bowen) and heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter (Wes Studi) star as an unlikely band of heroes battling to save the historic Piston Peak 26 odeon.co.uk

Will Dusty Crophopper's confident swagger be enough to pull him through?

EXPENDABLES 3 TBC RELEASED 14 AUGUST

DIRECTOR Patrick Hughes STARRING Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Wesley Snipes, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terry Crews, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford

Sylvester Stallone and his gang of heavy hitters return for this third instalment of The Expendables franchise – and this time things are set to get intense. We're finally getting to see Arnie fully ensconced in

the group, and he muscles up alongside a who's-who of action stars like Statham, Snipes and Lundgren. This time around, Stallone's Barney Ross and Co. are up against a certain Mel Gibson – who used to be a friend but is now very much a foe – determined to destroy the team. Bring on the weapons! Skip back to p14 for an interview with Terry 'Hale Caesar' Crews on top form.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW TBC released 29 AUGUST

DIRECTORs John Erick Dowdle STARRING Ben Feldman, Edwin Hodge, Perdita Weeks, James Pasierbowicz

We don't know about you, but our collective fear is being trapped underground, and As Above, So Below looks set to play on exactly that. In the catacombs below Paris, the

story centres on two archaeologists in search of a lost treasure, but find a lot more than they bargained for when their group has to face events from their pasts. Employing the kind of firstperson shaky cam stylistics brought to the fore by 1999's The Blair Witch Project, this is billed as a psychological thriller, but honestly it looks terrifying. Hold onto your seats!

We've been waiting a long time to visit this city again.

sin city: a dame to kill for TBC RELEASED 22 AUGUST

DIRECTORs Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez STARRING Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Eva Green, Juno Temple, Josh Brolin, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke

Sit back, open your eyes wide and feast on the film noir visual delights of this sort-of-followup to 2005's Sin City. Returning to the grim underbelly of this fictional city of sin, directors Miller and Rodriguez have thrown away the rule book to making a sequel, creating a hybrid that mixes in three prequel stories to the original, and then a sequel too. It certainly seems like a lot to wrap your head around on paper, but on film it promises to be a riot. A lot of the big guns return, both in actor names and weaponry, along with a stellar cast of new blood, most notably Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eva Green and Josh Brolin. If you loved the first film there's no doubt that you'll be into this one too, so do yourself a favour and head over to odeon.co.uk and pre-book some tickets. DIRECTOR R. J. Cutler STARRING Chloé Grace Moretz, Mireille Enos, Liana Liberato

Men pretending to be policemen - trouble lies ahead!

LET'S BE COPS TBC RELEASED 27 AUGUST

DIRECTOR Luke Greenfield STARRING Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr, Andy Garcia

We've all been in that conundrum, where we're not sure what to wear to a fancy dress party. Johnson and Wayans find themselves in such a situation at the kick-off of this film – only their choice leads them down a somewhat rocky road. It starts out well enough. First, they choose to go to a party as cops, but so convincingly that their neighbourhood think that they're real ones and the pair get a little, er, carried away with their newfound hero status. They even buy an actual cop car in which to drive around. Trouble is inevitable. Their fake badges see them entangle with real life mobsters and dirty detectives, by way of a lot of laughs – think how carried away you might get were you high on life but low on morals. This will be a riot. 28 odeon.co.uk

Moretz's Mia Hall begins this film as a young, gifted musician trying to choose between her musical dreams or the love of her life. But then everything changes in an

instant, when a family drive ends in tragedy, and she's left in a coma. During an out of body experience, Mia spends a day seeing how her life will turn out quite differently than she'd imagine should she wake, and so she has to decide whether to or not. Tip: take a box of tissues, you'll be blubbing.

THE ROVER TBC released 15 AUGUST

DIRECTOR David Michôd STARRING Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy, David Field

The tagline for this is 'Fear the man with nothing left to lose', so you know it's not going to be easy-going. Even the trailer has you on the edge of your seat, so make sure you come with your head switched on! Set against

the backdrop of a postapocalyptic Australian outback, Guy Pearce's mysterious loner Eric attempts to seek revenge on the group of men who stole his one possession, and ends up with Robert 'Twilight' Pattinson as his vulnerable, naïve accomplice. By all accounts, this one will need to be discussed over a strong drink afterwards.
